Coming in at #6 is the Quesada 1974 Toro. The Quesada 1974 is a cigar line that pays homage to the year Quesada Cigars opened its own factory. It's a cigar line that made its debut in 2019, which incidentally coincided with the 45th anniversary of the factory opening. In 2021, Quesada Cigars did a line extension in the form of a classic 6 x 52 Toro. But it was the Robusto that would land on the 2021 Countdown. This year the Toro lands a top ten slot at #6. The blend to the Quesada 1974 features a Cameroon seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. There are Dominican tobaccos on the binder and filler, along with some additional Nicaraguan tobacco used in the filler. The Dominican tobaccos were grown directly by the Quesada family. Production comes from TABADEX, the Quesada factory. This is a regular production line for the Quesada's and the Toro size was the fifth one introduced into the 1974 line. The Quesada 1974 Toro delivered a medium strength, medium-bodied smoke from start to finish - making this a very approachable cigar. The Quesada 1974 line has a very unique flavor profile, and the Toro size is no exception. Along the way, this cigar delivered notes of bread, apricot, orange rind, wood, baker's spice, and black pepper. The Toro is the belle of the ball of the Quesada 1974 line. While the Toro size might be one for the contemporary smoker, this cigar smokes every bit like a connoisseur size. The Quesada Toro 1974 is the third cigar from Quesada to land on the 2022 Cigar of the Year Countdown joining the Quesada Oktoberfest 10th Anniversary Bavarian and the Casa Magna Liga F Churchill. It's also the fourth cigar from the Quesada factory to land on the 2022 Countdown. As we have mentioned this is the eighth year a Quesada Cigar places on the Countdown and with three cigars this year, it's one of Quesada's strongest years. It gives the Dominican Republic a sixth cigar on the Countdown with three of them landing in the top ten thus far. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-oqs

Coming in at #14 is the Undercrown 10 Robusto by Drew Estate. The Undercrown 10 line made its debut back in 2021. As the name indicates, it was meant to commemorate ten years of the Undercrown brand. This is actually the second year in a row Undercrown 10 has landed on Countdown. Last year the Toro size of Undercrown 10 landed at #15. Back in 2008, Drew Estate made a significant move into the traditional premium cigar-making space with Liga Privada, but the brand was always intended to be somewhat of a limited production offering. This is where the need for Undercrown came in. Drew Estate needed an offering that was not as constrained as Liga Privada. In any factory, it is common for rollers to smoke the cigar they are making. With Drew Estate's popular Liga Privada, because there was high demand with limited tobacco, it was not possible for the rollers to smoke that cigar. Therefore, the rollers came up with a variation of the Liga Privada blend which would be dubbed Undercrown (now Undercrown Maduro). This basically involved using alternate primings from the same tobaccos that were acquired and used in the Liga Privada blend. In 2011, the Undercrown Maduro was released to the market. Eventually, other Undercrown blends were added, one of which is the all-new Undercrown 10. Like the original the Undercrown Maduro, Undercrown 10 also uses a San Andres wrapper. The difference is the San Andres wrapper for the Undercrown 10 is a higher grade and priming. The remainder of the blend incorporates “the very finest Broadleaf binder from the Connecticut River Valley, and a tripa blend of select and rare Nicaraguan tobaccos.” Production is handled at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. The Robusto measures 5 x 50. Flavor-wise, the Undercrown 10 Robusto delivered notes of coffee, cocoa, baker's spice, red licorice, pepper, and cream. For the most part, this delivered a cigar with medium strength and medium body, but it does kick up to medium to full in the final third. The Robusto is going to be very close to the Toro in terms of a flavor profile, but the flavors seemed to be on the richer side. Drew Estate has been one of the most successful companies in the history of the Countdown. This is the ninth year the company has landed on the Countdown, including five years in a row. Nicaragua continues to dominate the 2022 Countdown as this is the 12th cigar to land on the Countdown from that country. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-on5

Coming in at #15 is the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Corojo Robusto. The Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario series has its roots back in 2013. At the time, the company was known as Casa Fernandez, and it released a limited edition Corojo wrapped cigar to celebrate its 35th anniversary known as the Casa Fernandez Aniversario Series Boheme No. 35. Some follow-up vitolas were released, as well as a Maduro counterpart. Along the way, three Casa Fernandez Aniversario offerings have landed on a Cigar Coop Countdown. Late in 2021, the line was rebranded to the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario. At the same time, a 5 x 54 Box Pressed Robusto offering was added with the Corojo Robusto becoming the fourth of the Aniversario series to place on the Countdown. The blend of the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Corojo remains the same as when this was first released under the Casa Fernandez name. It's not only a 100% Nicaraguan puro, but it features all tobaccos that are grown on the Aganorsa farms. Flavor-wise, the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Corojo Robusto delivered notes of natural tobacco, citrus, earth, cedar, graham cracker, and black pepper. It's a cigar that started out medium in strength and body, but does kick up to medium to full for both attributes in the second half. It's a cigar that has enough complexity to hold one's interest from start to finish. Aganorsa Leaf has been one of the most successful companies in the history of the Countdown. This is the ninth year Aganorsa Leaf has placed on the Countdown - and the company has done this over a ten-year span. Once again, Nicaragua scores another spot on the 2022 Countdown, and of the five countries to land on this year's Countdown, 11 have come from Nicaragua. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-omi

Coming in at #18 is Fonseca by My Father Cigars Robusto. At the end of 2019, one of the more surprising stories that hit the news was the acquisition of the Fonseca brand by My Father Cigars from the Quesada family. The Fonseca brand was established in Cuba by Don Francisco Fonseca in 1892. The Dominican version of the Fonseca brand has been made by the Quesada family since 1974. While under the Quesada stewardship, the brand maintained an important part of the Quesada portfolio. In 2020, the Garcia family would release its own interpretation of the Fonseca Brand with the Fonseca by My Father - which would become a regular production offering in the My Father portfolio. The Fonseca by My Father is produced at the My Father Cigars factory located in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend features 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos grown by the Garcia family. The blend is highlighted by a shade-grown Nicaraguan Corojo '99 wrapper. The Robusto size measures 5 1/4 x 52. The Fonseca by My Father Cigars delivered a mix of natural tobacco, earth, hay, pepper, and baker's spice. This cigar was medium for both strength and body. It's a cigar that I found a little less aggressive than many My Father offerings and a little more aggressive than most of the Quesada-made Fonseca offerings. For My Father Cigars, this marks the sixth year it has landed a cigar on the Cigar Coop Countdown. If you are keeping score at home, Nicaragua has now landed nine of the 13 cigars unveiled thus far on the 2022 Countdown. It's also the 12th different company and 11th different factory to land on this year's countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ol3

The guys have... thoughts... about this year's top cigar. Coming in at #21 is The American Double Robusto by J.C. Newman Cigar Company. At the end of 2020, Cigar Coop named the Toro size of The American as our #1 Cigar of the Year. It's a unique project from J.C. Newman Cigar Company that pays homage to cigar making in the United States. The blend is made in the U.S. featuring 100% American-grown tobacco. In addition, everything about the cigar is American-made, including the boxes, the box hinges, the labels, and even the molds. The Double Robusto size was introduced in 2021, and it's a tweaked and bolder version of the original blend. The American Double Robusto uses a wrapper grown in Florida by Jeff Borysiewicz at his farm in Clearmont, Florida. The remainder of the blend consists of a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and fillers consisting of Pennsylvania and Connecticut Habano tobaccos. The American Double Robusto uses the same tobacco components as the original line, the one major difference is that there is an extra leaf of Pennsylvania ligero that is included in the blend. The Double Robusto measures 5 1/2 x 56, making it the thickest offering in The American line to date. Production comes from J.C. Newman's El Reloj factory in Ybor City. The American Double Robusto delivers a complex smoke consisting of wood, earth, mixed fruit, citrus, black pepper, graham cracker, and metallic notes. While I would categorize it as medium in strength and body, it's still got more in the way of boldness compared to the rest of the line. For J.C. Newman, this marks the third year it has landed a cigar on the Cigar Coop Countdown, and it's the second cigar for The American line to place on a Countdown. This cigar also is the first cigar from the U.S. to land on the 2022 Countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ojC

Coming in at #28 is the Crowned Heads Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2021 LC50. The name “Las Calaveras” translates to “The Skulls” and it's a line that pays homage to those who have passed away over the past year. As opposed to being a mournful symbol, it is intended to be a celebration of those lives and remembrance of those who are no longer with us. In the past, the band of the Las Calaveras was transcribed with the initials of some people Crowned Heads will pay homage to. The line was launched in 2014, and each year has featured a different blend and different sizes. For the 2022 Countdown, it is the Las Calaveras Edición 2021 edition in the LC50 (the 5 x 50 Robusto size) that earns a slot on the list. The Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2021 LC50 features an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. It is the first edition of the Las Calaveras line to incorporate this wrapper. The cigar itself is produced out of My Father Cigars' factory. Flavorwise the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2022 LC50 features notes of natural tobacco, fruit, earth, chocolate, Wood, Pepper. The flavors delivered are medium-bodied and this is countered with medium strength. The flavors complement each other very nicely and at the same time there is a nice amount of complexity on this cigar. Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2022 LC50 has landed Crowned Heads on the Countdown for the 4th time. If you are following the Countdown each day, this is the 3rd Nicaraguan-made cigar to be placed on the Countdown. References Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-oeq
