In this episode, I am sharing the concept of alignment and how it can sometimes feel boring or uncomfortable, especially if you're used to living in chaos. We are conditioned to gravitate towards what feels familiar, even if it's not what we truly want. Our subconscious minds often choose chaos over peace because it's what we know. I emphasize that if you find yourself repeatedly returning to unhealthy relationships or stressful situations, it's likely because they feel normal to you. Imagine what it would feel like to train and reprogram your subconscious mind to become familiar with peace instead of chaos.  You can create a whole new baseline. We explore why big-name hires from large enterprises often flop in scrappy startups, the power of hiring gritty operators over shiny resumes, and how to create a strategic, stage-appropriate hiring roadmap. If you're looking to scale without bloating your team or burning your cash, this episode is packed with insights on founder-led sales, hiring for impact, and building elite go-to-market teams that actually work in real-world startup conditions.Key Takeaways00:00 – Don't hire a VP of Sales yet? Most execs don't." – Uddhav Mehra"Marketing isn't a person. It's a function made of 10 roles. Know what you actually need." – Jeff MainsSaaS Leadership LessonsDon't hire too senior too soon – Early-stage startups often mistake brand-name experience for startup grit. Hire for stage fit, not prestige.Enterprise sales ≠ enterprise strategy – A better early move: founder-led sales + 1 top enterprise rep who's hungry to win.Start with goals, not job titles – Instead of saying “we need a VP of Sales,” define what outcomes you need and build a strategy around that.Hiring evolves with your growth stage – What works at Series A won't work at Series C. Update your hiring playbook accordingly.Avoid "Frankenstein job descriptions" – Roles like “Marketing Person” often disguise unrealistic expectations across 5–6 different functions.Great hiring is strategy, not speed – A structured, multi-step hiring process reduces misfires and builds long-term alignment.Guest ResourcesEmail - harry@theinflectiongroup.comWebsite - https://www.theinflectiongroup.com/Harry's Linkedin

186. Why a Relationship-Based Coaching Business is the Key to Long-Term Success with Caryn Gillen

The Masterful Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 29:13

Today, we're diving deep into something I have discussed many times from a slightly different perspective. Almost every coach faces challenges when we realize that in addition to doing the work we love, we also have to run a business. The idea and practice of having a coaching business can be overwhelming, but it certainly doesn't have to be. If you want to build a coaching business that reflects your values—where deep relationships, service, and long-term sustainability are front and center—this blog is for you. It's so common to hear about the goals and strategies of other business owners and coaches and think you need to do everything they are doing. BUT, that's not true. Not even close. Everyone has different values, different gifts, and different desires. The key to the real success you are craving, is a unique business that comes out of your natural abilities and human connection. I interviewed Caryn Gillen on the podcast - she is a powerhouse. Caryn helps coaches create businesses they “don't have to recover from.” Wow, if that's not a statement, I don't know what is. She shows coaches that their businesses can work for who they are as a person and the life that they have. Your coaching business can serve your clients, you, your family, and the community you live in–and that's what you'll hear about in this blog.Caryn and I are aligned in our mission in this regard. In fact, this is exactly what called me to reach out to her for an interview. We both believe that a business built with authenticity is one that puts our clients' best interests at the forefront of what we do. I can't wait for you to read more about this here. You'll realize that you're not just building any business, you are building your business–and there are so many ways to help you make your business work for you so you can do what you love without the overwhelm. Why your coaching skills are also your sales skillsI want to highlight one beneficial idea for us to consider as coaches building our business. There are activities in our business that are quick-win activities, and then there are activities that are more for long-term growth. There's not an exact line that is differentiated, but one example is the goal of growing your email list–that will promote long-term growth. But if you're focusing all your energy on growing your list, that will probably not bring in a new client immediately. The connections you make and the discussions you engage in will be the key activities that attract your clients. When it comes to these meaningful relationships, I like to remind my Master Coaches that they are people who want to help and make a difference. We don't become coaches because we are simply “looking for a way to make money.” We begin because we love coaching and connecting with people. Since this is our focus, it's easy to think that we're just not good at sales or marketing. But caring about people–genuinely caring about them–is selling. You can build a consistent and sustainable coaching businessCaryn has been in business and been a business coach for many years. She has excellent insight into some of the best things she did when first starting and some shifts she made in order to create more sustainability in her coaching business. When Caryn became a coach 15 years ago, she charged $20 a session. She is still in touch with one of her clients who paid that price, and he has referred people to her who have paid full price now. This story emphasizes the importance of a relationship-based coaching business. Initially, Caryn was willing to say yes to anything that got her working with clients, getting a dollar through the door, and getting her...

The Smartest Entrepreneurs Know When to Pivot—Here's How to Spot and Fix a Strategy That's Holding You Back What if the reason your business growth has stalled isn't due to a lack of strategy—but rather the wrong strategy? You might be unknowingly following an anti-strategy, a sneaky business misalignment that costs time, money, and momentum. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on my own anti-strategies—the costly decisions I thought were game-changers but turned out to be massive missteps. From a coaching program that almost derailed my core business to a CRM migration nightmare that drained time and resources, I'm sharing the hard-earned lessons that will help you avoid making the same mistakes. If you've ever felt stuck despite implementing all the "right" strategies, this episode is for you. I'll walk you through exactly how to identify and course-correct an anti-strategy before it costs you big time. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ An Anti-Strategy Is a Strategy That Works Against You – Sometimes, a plan seems smart on paper but lacks alignment with your core business goals. If a new project pulls you away from your primary revenue drivers, it could be an anti-strategy in disguise. 2️⃣ Misalignment Costs More Than You Think – Whether it's wasted time, lost revenue, or team frustration, making decisions in a silo (without the right input) leads to costly detours. The key is bringing the right people into the conversation early. 3️⃣ The Fix? Strategic Check-Ins & Gut Instincts – Regularly review your business goals and ask, “Is this truly moving us forward?” If your gut tells you something is off, trust it. Pausing and pivoting sooner rather than later can save you from a painful misstep. Get Organized for Good with Corinne Morahan: Maximize Your Productivity, Cultivate Purposeful Habits and Have More Fun!

Your next level of success may have less to do with strategy and more to do with who's sitting next to you.   This week, Corinne Morahan unpacks what happens when you intentionally build relationships that stretch your thinking, raise your standards, and hold you to the version of yourself you're working toward. Could the fastest path to growth be as simple as being in the right room?   Corinne breaks down the three kinds of relationships that can move the needle the most—peers, mentors, and intimate connections—and shares how each one plays a role in both your business and your personal fulfillment. You'll hear how proximity to high-caliber women sparked more growth for Corinne in five weeks than she had in the entire year before.   This episode doesn't shy away from the tougher side of the conversation either. Corinne offers a thoughtful take on setting boundaries with relationships that no longer align and gives permission to shift those dynamics with grace. If you've been feeling ready for a stronger, more aligned circle, this is your invitation to stop waiting and start curating.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Why Proximity Shapes Success 02:51 Harvard and the Concept of Peer Effects 07:54 The Three Types of Relationships: Peers, Mentors, and Intimate Connections 13:03 How to Attract and Build High-Level Connections 15:10 The Power of Contribution in High-Caliber Circles 18:11 Setting Boundaries with Draining Relationships 21:32 The Role of Relationships in Long-Term Success and Fulfillment   Links JOIN THE VIBE MEMBERSHIP: Ready for more impact, freedom and success?
