The Swiss Indoors in Basel featured a wild draw, with the top seeds exiting early and opening the door for an underdog champion. Antes da reunião, Trump foi questionado se a negociação incluiria o ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro. Respondeu apenas que “sempre gostou dele” e se entristeceu com sua condenação. Na reunião, o Brasil se propôs a mediar a crise com a Venezeula – os EUA tem afundado barcos que relaciona ao narcotráfico. O chanceler brasileiro, Mauro Vieira, descreveu o encontro como “descontraído” e “até alegre”. O secretário de Estado americano, Marco Rubio, lembrou que há divergência com o Brasil sobre “como alguns de seus juízes têm tratado o setor digital dos EUA”, mas também adotou tom otimista. “Teremos que lidar com isso também”. Community voices are often an underrepresented aspect of our historical and cultural knowledge of the U.S. Southwest. In this episode, we sit down with Vanessa Fonseca-Chávez and Anita Huízar-Hernández, editors of meXicana Roots and Routes: Listening to People, Places, and Pasts (U Arizona Press, 2025). In this collection, established and emerging scholars draw upon their rootedness in the U.S. Southwest and U.S.-Mexico borderlands. The meXicana contributors use personal and scholarly inquiry to discuss what it means to cultivate spaces of belonging, navigate language policies, and explore and excavate silences in various spaces, among other important themes.From the recruitment of Latinas for the U.S. Benito Juárez Squadron in World War II, to the early twentieth-century development of bilingual education in Arizona, to new and insightful analyses of Bracero Program participants and their families, the book details little-known oral histories and archival material to present a rich account of lives along the border with emphasis on women and the working class.As the inaugural publication of the Arizona Crossroads series, readers will find Arizona featured as a central node of borderlands roots and routes. Each section of the book intentionally centers Arizona within broader comparative and cross-state dialogues. Novelist Jessica Francis Kane joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss her new novel Fonseca, which fictionalizes writer Penelope Fitzgerald's 1952 trip to Mexico. Kane talks about imagining Fitzgerald in her mid-thirties, before she had become a novelist, when she was living a financially precarious life and editing a journal with her husband Desmond. Kane reflects on Fitzgerald's decision to travel to Mexico with her son Valpy, a prospective heir for sisters there who are distantly connected to their family. Kane explains how she came to correspond with Fitzgerald's children and the choice to use those letters as part of the book; her belief that the trip had a formative effect on Fitzgerald; “following the plot” based on the available facts; and introducing historical speculation, like an acquaintance with painter Edward Hopper, into the storyline.
