The inner voice that drives superstar athletes to the altitude that asphyxiates mere mortals has a dark side. When is enough, enough? Case in point, the phenomenal career of one of tennis' trip of GOATs, Novak Djokovic, and the shuffle away from City Kick Boxing by potential UFC hall of Famer Israel Adesanya. Novak got rolled this morning by one of the new generation of men's players who is scrambling around in the foothills of his grand slam ascent, Jannik Sinner. No surprise of course that he would dispose of Novak with relative ease in the semifinals at Wimbledon. Novak is still a superb player, but in his fixture with Father Time, the tyranny of age is moving him toward game, set, and match. Tantalisingly close to securing a record that will most likely never be touched, a quarter of a century of Grand Slam titles, Novak's ego is in the driver's seat, refusing to let him bow out with dignity, egging him on slam after slam, in hope of snaring his 25th title. His best chance has come and gone, when Sinner and Alcaraz didn't feature in the French Open. The gate was open, but was shut in his face by Fonseca. Ouch. Israel is on a similar course. The once darling of the most ferocious sport the world has known, has a career whose moon is waning, and as much as he can't or won't admit it, Father Time has a rear naked choke hold on him and is unlikely to let go. The Style Bender has walked from the gym that propelled him to superstardom (or did he propel the gym into orbit?) in what can only be seen as a last-ditch attempt to launch him back into title contention again. Self-belief, id, ego, whatever you call it, is an essential arrow in the quiver of the sporting colossus, one that is tempting to nock again, but is best left unshot in the fading light of the setting sun in an athlete's career. Aos 12 anos de idade, ele correu 43 quilômetros. Pouco depois completou sua primeira maratona e, em 1998, fez o primeiro Ironman de Porto Seguro. Depois de mais de uma década dedicada ao triathlon, passou a buscar desafios em ambientes extremos ao redor do mundo. A estreia nas ultramaratonas aconteceu na Antártica. Venceu a Ice Marathon e, no dia seguinte, também ganhou a prova de 100 quilômetros, estabelecendo um recorde. Mais tarde encarou os 250 quilômetros da Marathon des Sables, no deserto do Saara, além de uma ultra no Nepal. Parte dessas experiências acabou registrada em episódios do Planeta Extremo, exibido pela TV Globo. Alguns anos depois ele decidiu se aventurar em expedições de montanha. Subiu o Kilimanjaro, o Aconcágua, o Elbrus, além do Huascarán e do Quitaraju, no Peru e a Pirâmide Cartenz na Indonésia. Em 2018, encarou o Manaslu, no Himalaia. Em 2023 realizou a façanha de escalar o Monte Everest. A expedição aconteceu em uma temporada histórica no Everest, marcada pela letalidade, superlotação e pelas longas filas na chamada zona da morte. A experiência deu origem ao documentário Um Passo a Mais, lançado em 2025, que acompanha uma expedição sustentável ao Everest e propõe uma reflexão sobre o impacto ambiental causado pelo excesso de pessoas na montanha. Em paralelo ao esporte e às aventuras, trabalhou durante alguns anos no mercado financeiro até decidir empreender. Criou então a X3M para organizar o primeiro XTERRA no Brasil, projeto que mais tarde se transformaria em um circuito e incorporaria provas de corrida e mountain bike. De volta conosco hoje, o administrador de empresas que saiu do mercado financeiro para criar a X3M, agência especializada em experiências e eventos esportivos. We talk about the centuries-old forest (planted by monks, over 700 tree species), the extraordinary palace interior, and the shadow of King Carlos I, who was assassinated just a year after it was completed. We also get into the Battle of Buçaco from the Peninsular War and why the old convent on the grounds is worth seeking out. Our honest take: this one is better as an overnight or paired with Coimbra, just 30 minutes away.Grutas de Mira de Aire (~1.5 hours from Lisbon) The largest open caves in Portugal, discovered by accident in 1947 when a local farmer noticed steam rising from the ground on a cold morning. Formed during the Middle Jurassic era (yes, dinosaur times), the caves stretch 11 km but 600 metres are open to visitors. We walk you through what the guided tour is actually like, the app you can use if your tour is in Portuguese, and that final room with the fountain show — a little kitsch, absolutely wonderful. A car is needed if you are doing it yourselves, but you can get a tour through Get Your Guide from Lisbon, and it pairs beautifully with Fátima for a full central Portugal day.Buddha Eden & Quinta das Cerejeiras (~1 hour from Lisbon, near Bombarral) This one needs to be seen to be believed.
