Catalyst is an international programme for young people and their teachers that addresses the War on Drugs in the Americas. It combines several months of online collaboration with an intense summer camp and thereby tries to really enable the participants to return to their communities, make a difference and develop their own voice in shaping drug policy. In this conversation, I speak with Theo di Castri, Catalyst's co-founder and with Diana Rodriguez Gomez, their director of education, to understand their programme and the reasons for this unique design. As always, if you have any comments, questions or suggestions for guests, I'd be happy to hear from you. Email me at lukas.wallrich@empower-training.de Further reading Theo and Diana suggested quite a few resources for anyone who wants to learn more about the War on Drugs and the many problems that come with it. For starters, this brief and free History of Drug Policy by David Courtwright is revealing, while the following books go further: The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander emphasizes the links between racism and the war on drugs in the US Plan Colombia by John Lindsay-Poland offers a stark example of the impact of the War on Drugs in South America Drug War Capitalism by Dawn Paley highlights the financial flows and economic incentives that fuel the War on Drugs and much violence beyond it Theme music from https://filmmusic.io: "Zigzag" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) Licence: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

Podcast 315: Zosha Di Castri

In this final 'episode' of interviews curated by Seth Cluett, we get to meet Zosha Di Castri - a composer that seems to enjoy it all! Whether it is working with orchestra, string ensemble or small groups - or dance, or installation or architectural performance - Zosha seems to have a voice for it. She seamlessly mixes notated performance with improv, classical instruments with electronics, and a smattering of fixed media and voice throughout. She also embraces dynamic surprise - something we dive into during our discussion. This was an interesting discussion because we spent a fair amount of time talking about how she 'imagined' her pieces into existence, and how she takes these imaginings and turns them into performable pieces. Part of her practice is solitary, but another part of it is deeply collaborative, and the work ends up being an extension of the performers that engage with it. I hope that you'll take the opportunity to engage with it yourself; you can find a lot about her work at her website (http://www.zoshadicastri.com/), and by touring your favorite music streaming site. I found the music to be constantly surprising; the amount of drama that is wrapped in her work - along with that blending of technologies and techniques - make for a unique flavor of New Music. Enjoy!

La Jolla Symphony & Chorus begins their 64th season with questions about lineage: Where do we come from? How does the music of our past inform our understanding of the future? "Lineage," a piece by young Canadian composer Zosha de Castri, recalls how her grandmother's tales shaped her own sense of being Canadian. Igor Stravinsky's Petrushka was inspired by his memories of Russian Shrovetide fairs, in all their color and excitement. Finally, everything on the planet began with water, and in celebration, Music Director Steven Schick gives up his baton to solo in Tan Duns "Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra," with Michael Gerdes conducting. In this episode, we continued our ongoing series on fintech in Asia by interviewing Simone di Castri, the Managing Director of the RegTech for Regulators Accelerator (R²A).  The mission of R²A is to enhance the capacity of financial authorities by harnessing innovative technologies and accelerating promising RegTech (regulatory technology) solutions. Simone guided us through some of the biggest challenges facing financial authorities, and what technological solutions R²A has been developing to help regulators in emerging markets. R²A has so far been focused on enhancing the capabilities of financial authorities in Mexico and the Philippines to better understand markets and customer needs in data-rich environments. Some of our key takeaways include: A critical challenge in banking supervision is the time and resources required to manage and validate data collected from financial institutions; R²A is solving this using APIs that connect the central bank to financial institutions. In the Philippines, R²A is prototyping a smartphone chat bot powered by machine learning that will enable any citizen to escalate a problem with their financial provider to the consumer protection team at the central bank. Emerging and frontier markets are a natural fit for these new tools and techniques given the importance they place on financial inclusion and resource constraints that encourage innovation. Fast-moving fintech actors have helped spur financial authorities to be more proactive in adopting new technologies in oversight and regulation. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco or of the Federal Reserve System.
