Most entrepreneurs think their biggest challenge is marketing. Or sales. Or cash flow. Or finding more customers. But one of the biggest challenges business owners face is something that rarely gets talked about: Loneliness. In this episode of the New Jersey Business Podcast, Paul and Vanessa Valverde have an honest conversation about the hidden emotional side of entrepreneurship and why so many business owners feel isolated while building their businesses. Entrepreneurship often looks exciting from the outside. Freedom. Flexibility. Growth. Opportunity. But behind the scenes, many entrepreneurs carry responsibilities, pressures, decisions, and uncertainties that few people truly understand. Friends and family may support you. Employees may appreciate you. Customers may value your work. But that does not always mean they understand what it feels like to be responsible for building and sustaining a business. This episode explores why entrepreneurship can feel so lonely, the hidden costs of isolation, why traditional networking often fails to solve the problem, and why meaningful community may be one of the most overlooked success tools available to entrepreneurs. Paul and Vanessa also share personal experiences from building New Jersey Business Media, launching the New Jersey Business Podcast, creating entrepreneurial communities, and observing the common struggles business owners face regardless of industry. This conversation is not about business tactics. It's about the human side of entrepreneurship. Because sometimes the biggest breakthrough is not another strategy. It's finding the right people to walk the journey with you.

Have you ever walked around a street, mall, or airport and noticed two or three of the same franchise restaurant within walking distance? Why might one Starbucks or McDonald's or Wetzel's Pretzels sometimes be built so close to another? Are they friends or competitors? And how can that possibly be profitable?Today's show is one such example. Our pals at Hyperfixed got a knotty question we just had to help them untangle: Why are there so many Wetzel's Pretzels so close to one another at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center Station? To find out, Alexi Horowitz-Ghazi followed the dough all the way to the top. Jeff Dudan's free digital copy of his book What does it take to turn business chaos into a repeatable formula for success? In this episode, Jeff Dudan sits down with Troy Hazard - global keynote speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, TV host, and former Global President of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) - for a wide-ranging conversation on peer networks, business acquisitions, and the mindset shifts that separate good entrepreneurs from great ones. Troy shares the hilarious story of how three bottles of wine at a lunch in Brisbane launched a 15-year journey that took him to the top of EO's global leadership. He breaks down why he deliberately looks for 'unsexy' businesses most investors ignore, why he makes himself redundant as fast as possible after acquiring a company, and why leaving money on the table for the buyer is actually the strategy that creates premium exits. You'll also hear a powerful framework for evaluating distressed businesses - one that starts not with spreadsheets, but with candid conversations over coffee. Plus, Troy and Jeff explore the transformative power of EO, YPO, Vistage, and peer mastermind groups for entrepreneurs who didn't follow the traditional MBA path. Key topics covered: • How EO and YPO create life-changing peer networks for entrepreneurs • Why the best advice comes from people with nothing to gain from you • The 'unsexy business' acquisition strategy that creates outsized returns • How to evaluate a distressed business when the P&L tells you nothing • Why making yourself redundant is the fastest path to a profitable exit • The psychology of selling a business at a premium price • Vulnerability as a leadership superpower • Why confidentiality inside peer groups unlocks radical honesty  Guest: TROY HAZARD Guest YouTube: https://vimeo.com/troyhazard  Guest Business YouTube: Guest Website: https://troyhazard.com/  Guest Socials: https://www.linkedin.com/in/troyhazard/  #entrepreneurship #businessgrowth #TroyHazard #JeffDudan #EO #YPO #businessacquisition #peerlearning #leadershipmindset Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Send us Fan MailMost leaders in the agricultural industry know AI is coming. Far fewer have actually figured out how to use it in a way that makes their day-to-day leadership better — not someday, but this week.In this solo episode, Brandon Mulnix shares what happened when he stopped treating AI like a search engine and started using it as a thinking partner. Over the last quarter, he used AI to prepare for a difficult performance conversation, build documents he had no formal training to write, automate a weekly reporting process he'd been doing by hand for years, and finally get his best ideas out of his head and into finished work.He also responds to something a team member said that stopped him cold: "You didn't do this. AI did this." His answer — the Michelangelo and the chisel — is the most important thing in this episode.Brandon walks through the Three Doors Framework — Thinking, Drafting, and Research — and gives you one specific action to take before Monday. He covers the tools he actually uses (Gemini and Claude, both free to start), addresses every fear that's keeping leaders on the sideline, and closes with the servant leadership question that changed how he thinks about all of it.If you manage people, walk houses, run reports, or lead a team in the poultry or egg industry — this episode was built for you.Mentioned in this episode: Gemini — gemini.google.com (free), Claude — claude.ai (free to start)Want to talk to a human about getting started with AI? From defying her mother's wishes to leave university and pursue government work to building a thriving feminine hygiene business that ships to the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Nigeria, and why the brutal truth about starting a business when you have nothing is that you don't need perfection, you don't need a physical shop, you don't need everything figured out because the young woman who started with no business name and bathed with AC water during her toughest days now runs an international brand that doctors recommend to their patients, the painful reality of being the child nobody listened to or understood growing up in a home where your voice didn't matter and being bullied without anyone sitting you down to hear your problems, the university years of feeling invisible and unheard that shaped a determination to create something meaningful on her own terms, the national service period searching for jobs that never came and the five to six years that could have been miserable if she had kept waiting for someone else to create opportunities for her, the moment after service when she moved in with friends and life got so tough they were bathing with water collected from the AC unit because they couldn't afford to fill their tanks in a house with illegal electrical connection, the realization that she hates discomfort so much it became the driving force that pushed her to build something of her own at her own pace, the mother who didn't want her working in shops or informal businesses because she wanted her daughter to wear suits and work the 9 to 5 government job that represented respectability when that path felt like suffocation, the father who understood and supported her vision even when her mother couldn't see it, the business that started without even a name because she was so focused on solving problems for women and creating freedom through feminine hygiene education that Africans are never taught at home, the first three weeks of selling 500 products and then hitting a wall where orders stopped coming but instead of quitting she sat down and asked how can I do this better, the decision to invest everything she made back into the business by reaching out to influencer Dorsey who charged 2,500 cedis for promotional posts, the 24 hours after Dorsey's first post that generated 25,000 cedis in sales proving the product and message resonated, the bold move of taking that same money and paying Dorsey for an entire month of promotion and then another month because she wasn't motivated by short term gains but by the vision of building an international brand, the thousands of sales that came through recommendations because she focused her first year not on making money but on getting her products in the minds and on the lips of people, the biggest problem being FDA approvals that prevent her from adding certain products even though pharmacies stock her items and doctors actively recommend patients come to her, the 2,000 orders in just three days during a sales period proving that online presence and trust can generate massive results without a physical shop, the reviews flooding in that make her so happy because she's fulfilling a purpose of educating women about feminine hygiene and seeing them get real results, the trip to China that finally allowed her to create the packaging she envisioned because she couldn't get what she wanted in Ghana and she wanted something that would entice eyes and not be thrown away when it arrived in people's homes, the wisdom that you don't need to get everything at once and she likes going through the process without rushing on anyone else's timeline, the refusal to compare herself to competitors opening big shops because her path is different and her business can do well without a shop if she shows up consistently and authentically. What does it actually take to build a business that lasts 25 years in Nigeria — through recessions, exchange rate crashes, COVID, counterfeit competitors, and a rapidly changing economy? Mrs. Temilola Adepetun has the answer, and it is not what most people expect. This episode of Founders Connect is one of the most layered and honest conversations about what entrepreneurship really looks like over the long term. Temilola breaks down exactly how she validated a business idea in her head before there was internet, how she dragged inventory through the streets of New York in winter with stiff hands and no nails left just to keep the business stocked, and how she survived two major competitors rising up to take her market — not by going to war with them, but by refusing to compromise on quality until her customers came back to her on their own.She talks about the real cost of growing too fast, the discipline of growing organically, and why staying focused on your lane in the early years is one of the most underrated business decisions a founder can make. She walks through what it took to go from being the sole operator of a seasonal business to building a head office, hiring a COO thirteen years in, doubling revenue within two years of that hire, and then using that momentum to attract private equity. She explains what due diligence actually looked like for a brick-and-mortar business and why the most powerful thing she ever did was bank every single naira she made and keep audited records from day one.She also shares her mental model for leaving corporate life, the Yoruba philosophy that shaped her decision to take the leap, how she read the market before anyone else saw it, and the specific mindset shift that helped her see a seasonal business not as a limitation but as a puzzle to solve. And she opens up about succession planning, the deliberate decision to pass operational control to a younger leader whose values aligned with hers, and why she believes that letting other people in — truly in — is the most important thing a founder can do to make their business outlast them.If you have ever wondered whether it is too late to start, whether a simple idea can become something serious, whether a non-tech business can scale, attract capital, and compete globally, this episode is the answer. This podcast is so much more than talking to someone new about a race that they conquered. I had never officially met Natasha Castro, but with every picture she would post on Strava or Instagram I felt drawn to her. I can't really explain why that is, but I think her smile made me smile, and you could see the rawness of her emotions with every capture. So when I saw that she had completed the No Business 100, I knew the timing was perfect. Not far into our podcast, Natasha opened up and gave me glimpse into her life story, and I began to quickly see how and why she can dive deep into the pain cave but still find the strength to continue. She had been to much more painful places than these, and she is so much tougher than I could ever dream to be. Nastasha is BEAUTIFUL, like really stunning, but she doesn't even see it. She is so strong, but doesn't seem to realize it. She is such a light, but doesn't realize its' brightness. And for goodness sake, Natasha Castro is a RUNNER who belongs in this sport, and she is finally starting to believe it. Gosh, I feel truly honored to have met her and for her to share pieces of her life with me. Yes, we talk about her crazy No Business adventure and you will get sucked into this journey, But you will see...it is about so much more than completing a 100 mile race, and that's why I treasure the stories on Facing Vert. ...Natasha's Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/99434860Natasha's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ncc04/Natasha's performance coach: Marisa Romeo https://www.marisaromeo.comFacing Vert's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/facingvert/Mountain Running Company: https://mountainrunningcompany

The 49ers were down to backups across the board, yet Mac Jones delivered a masterclass performance that exposed just how much of a system quarterback Brock Purdy might really be. Kendrick Bourne balled out, the defense forced crucial turnovers, and Kyle Shanahan once again proved why he's one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. Meanwhile, Sean McVay's soft defensive game plan and awful fourth-down call cost the Rams a winnable game. JT has a strong take on what this win really says about the 49ers' Super Bowl ceiling—don't miss it.

In “There's No Business Like Hansen's Sno Bliz-ness,” Gravy producer Eve Troeh takes us to New Orleans, home of the sno-ball. In the South you need strategies to beat the summer heat, and ice plays a big role. Street vendors used to shave big blocks of ice by hand and add flavored syrup—a treat that became known as a sno-ball in the Big Easy. In the late 1930s, a local man, Ernest Hansen, invented a machine that changed the tradition. Sharp blades, encased in metal, turned chunks of ice into the most fluffy, fine “snow,” and he eventually patented this creation. While he kept his day job in New Orleans' manufacturing industry, Ernest's wife Mary ran with her husband's invention. She set up shop at home and eventually moved to a brick-and-mortar, dishing up fresh “snow” and dousing them with signature flavored syrups that she made by hand. They called their place Hansen's Sno-Bliz. Remarkably, Ernest's hand-built machines are still in use today, as are many of Mary's syrup recipes, and the business continues to cool off customers with some “air-conditioning for your tummy.” Hansen's Sno-Bliz is now in its 86th year, with Ernest and Mary's granddaughter, Ashley Hansen, at the helm. Ashley's was a long and loving journey to take on the business. She learned alongside her grandparents day by day. In a city that practically worships tradition, she honors her family and her customers by maintaining not just the original 1930s ice-shaving mechanics and syrup recipes, but also by cultivating the warm hospitality her grandparents always extended to anyone who entered. The cinder block corner shop on New Orleans' Tchoupitoulas Street looks humble, but you'll always find a line of customers stretching outside around the corner. The James Beard Foundation even bestowed Hansen's with its prestigious title of American Classic. New Orleanians from every corner of the city—and visitors from all around the world—eagerly line up to experience Hansen's, and form an of-the-moment community with each other as they choose their flavors and chat. In this cool edition of Gravy, Ashley Hansen shares the history, innovation, and spirit of her family's institution, always with Hansen's Sno-Bliz motto in mind: “There are no shortcuts to quality.” Learn more about your ad choices.
