That's why the Lost Shore surf shop works so well.Run by Kim Travers and Keir Smith, the shop blends global surf brands with independent local labels, creating a retail space that feels authentic without losing broad appeal. We start off by revisiting the Artemis II mission and some ideas of future space expansion. We then move to the main topic: a recap of some of the new places we visited in Egypt, such as KV5(a "tomb" complex in the Valley of Kings) and Tell Al-Roba, a massive 200 acre site in Egypt that holds the buried remnants of a temple complex and features an absolutely enormous single-piece granite shrine. We also talk about some new obvservations regarding the floor of the "Queen's Chamber" in the Great Pyramid, as well as some interesting aspects of the Grand Gallery. We then move on to our travels in the Faiyum and out into the desert, looking for traces of paleo and neo lithic people. This week on The Conversation, Nadine Matheson dives deep with author Stig Abell to discuss his gripping new novel, A Twist in the River. In this episode, Stig shares his journey from journalism to fiction writing, revealing how his experiences have shaped his storytelling and the themes he explores in his work.Stig tells the story of how he accidentally became a crime novelist, writing for pure pleasure during COVID lockdown, emailing chapters to his wife each evening so she could read them in the bath. He never planned to publish. Then someone bought it.We talk about what it's actually like inside the writing process: why Stig loves the first draft most (when no one is judging you), what it took to delete 40,000 words on his editor's advice, and why imposter syndrome never fully goes away even when you're on your fifth book. The conversation takes a darker turn when we get into AI. Stig makes a compelling and unsettling case for why white-collar jobs — law, accountancy, publishing — face serious disruption within years, and raises the question: will publishers eventually use AI to cut out writers altogether? Are books heading the way of vinyl? We also explore how the rise of true crime YouTube and social media is changing crime fiction, the law, and community grief and how both of us are weaving these shifts into our work.Stig closes with the best piece of advice he'd give his younger self: "Don't worry so much. It's going to happen anyway."Buy 'A Twist in the River' Follow Stig Abell
Some people date weekly. I date annually. Maybe biannually if the universe feels generous. In this episode, I'm talking about a man I've known for almost two years and how we've only managed one actual date, which has turned into its own kind of romantic mystery. The pacing is strange, the timing is stranger, and I'm over here trying to stop using the word “and” like it's emotional punctuation.Somewhere in the middle of all this, I'm sorting through what “my type” even means anymore. Not the old version. The current one. (They might resemble one another.) The version shaped by real connection, steady energy, and the qualities I genuinely appreciate in the man I'm dating.Meanwhile, in a fantastical dream state, my friend in Japan is living his best life, sending me voice notes about cherry blossoms and telling me to stop overthinking everything. He might be right. If you want to see my witty comments added in post‑production, watch on YouTube. Thanks for listening.Produced by Rebel Sage Perspectives IG: @intricaciesofmichelle @rebelsageperspectives#intricaciesofmichelle #rebelsageperspectives #romanticmystery #thatsmytype #cutthathair #safeplacetoland #alongwith #notinsteadof #notaboomer #creator #callme #influencer #KoreanDrama #kdramafan #meanpeoplesuck #ghostfreezone #notopposed #bringonbigbiceps #ilikebigbiceps #notdiscounting #freshhaircut #magicman #Japan #ashburnvirginia #Aquariuslife #boyfriendapplication #protectyourpeace #untilnextweek #toomuch #overthinkingitSend us Fan Mail

How This Is Building Me, hosted by world-renowned oncologist D. Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, is a podcast focused on the highs and lows, ups and downs of all those involved with cancer, cancer medicine, and cancer science across the full spectrum of life's experiences. In this episode, Dr Camidge sat down with Tim Clackson, PhD. Dr Clackson is a biotechnology executive at Kesmalea Therapeutics.Drs Camidge and Clackson discussed Dr Clackson's career journey through the biotechnology field, which began when his innate curiosity about biology and evolution led him to study biochemistry. He then pursued his PhD and was part of the small team that developed antibody phage display libraries, a breakthrough technology that allows scientists to mimic the immune system in a test tube to find specific antibodies. This work was foundational to the discovery of major drugs and contributed to the awarding of a Nobel Prize in 2018.In 1991, Dr Clackson moved to the US to pursue a postdoc at Genentec, where he was inspired by the company's vibrant and optimistic research environment. He then joined Ariad Pharmaceuticals, where he stayed for more than 20 years, evolving from a bench scientist to president of R&D. A major highlight of his tenure was the development of ponatinib (Iclusig) for the treatment of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. He also navigated significant challenges, including ponatinib's temporary market withdrawal due to safety concerns, which the company eventually resolved by narrowing the drug's clinical application. In the following years, Dr Clackson transitioned into chief executive officer roles at other biotech firms, such as IDRx. He noted that although acquisitions often result in leadership changes—humorously stating, "the higher you are, the quicker you go"—he enjoyed the storytelling aspect of pitching scientific strategies to investors. In the present day, Dr Clackson remains active in the biotechnology industry through board service and entrepreneurship.

In this conversation, the discussion with C. Thi Nguyen revolves around the nature of metrics, qualitative knowledge, and the duality of scoring systems, particularly in the context of climbing. The speaker shares personal experiences with climbing as a case study to illustrate how scoring systems can both enhance and detract from the experience. The conversation delves into the beauty of climbing, the subtlety of value in metrics, and the importance of savoring moments in games. It also explores the tension between purpose and game mechanics, the role of enjoyment, and the complexities of scoring systems in both games and life. Ultimately, the conversation highlights the challenges of balancing values in decision-making and the risks associated with the gamification of various aspects of life.Takeaways Metrics can miss the subtlety of qualitative knowledge. Scoring systems can enhance or detract from experiences. Climbing serves as a unique case study for scoring systems. The beauty of climbing lies in its scoring system. Values can become obscured when metrics are prioritized. Games allow for exploration of different scoring systems. Achievement play focuses on winning, while striving play values the process. Understanding the Intricacies of Tax Law: A Deep DiveThis conversation provides a comprehensive overview of tax law, focusing on the Internal Revenue Code and its structure. It demystifies the complexities of tax law, emphasizing the logical framework that governs it. The discussion covers the role of the IRS, the differences between tax avoidance and evasion, and the intricacies of real estate taxation. Key strategies for navigating tax disputes and understanding tax classifications are explored, along with mechanisms for measuring gain and loss, tax deferral, and depreciation recapture. The conversation concludes with practical advice for law students and practitioners on how to approach tax law effectively.Tax law often conjures images of complex codes and daunting regulations. However, beneath this seemingly impenetrable surface lies a structured and logical system. In this post, we unravel the intricacies of tax law, focusing on its statutory framework and the pivotal role it plays in shaping economic behavior. The Architecture of Tax Law: Tax law is fundamentally statutory, with the Internal Revenue Code serving as its backbone. Unlike other areas of law, where judicial opinions shape the landscape, tax law is primarily driven by Congress. This statutory nature rewards methodical analysis and precise application, making it a unique field within the legal system. The Dual Purpose of Tax Rules: Every tax rule serves two masters: revenue generation and policy implementation. Congress uses the tax code to influence economic behavior, encouraging investments and penalizing certain activities. Understanding this dual purpose is crucial for navigating the complexities of tax law.The Hierarchy of Authority: Navigating tax law requires an understanding of its hierarchy of authority. At the top are the statutes, followed by Treasury regulations, which carry significant weight. Below these are revenue rulings and procedures, which provide guidance but lack the binding authority of regulations.Real Estate and Tax Classification: In real estate, classification is key. The purpose for which a property is held determines its tax treatment, affecting deductions, depreciation, and the character of gains or losses. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Vincent Pasque from KU Leuven about his work on the reprogramming of cell identity through epigenetic mechanisms, particularly during early development and cellular reprogramming. We begin by tracing Vincent's journey into biology, sparked by early childhood experiences in nature and meaningful encounters with inspiring teachers. His fascination with the complexities of biology crystallized during a pivotal moment while listening to a radio segment on epigenetics in the late '90s, which led him to pursue studies in genetics and biochemistry. This formative path brought him to leading institutions, including the prestigious lab of John Gurdon, where he explored the phenomenon of nuclear reprogramming. Vincent recounts his early experiments that led to the discovery of macro H2A as a barrier to reprogramming, emphasizing the core challenge of erasing somatic cell identity. As the conversation unfolds, Vincent introduces us to critical findings from his research. He shares how the inactive X chromosome serves as a compelling model to investigate epigenetic regulation, revealing that the dynamics of reprogramming and differentiation are far from simple reversals of development. He highlights the significant differences between male and female iPSCs and how X-linked genes influence DNA methylation and differentiation rates in these cells. The implications of these findings extend beyond developmental biology to inform our understanding of diseases, particularly cancer. Transitioning to his current work, Vincent describes pioneering advances in characterizing the chromatin-associated proteome during the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells. The surprising discovery of elevated histone modifications in naïve cells leads to intriguing questions about the barriers to cellular plasticity and the mechanisms by which cells resist alternative fate conversions. The potential applications of this research could reshape our approach to regenerative medicine and therapeutic interventions. References Pasque V, Gillich A, Garrett N, Gurdon JB. According to reports from U.S. adoption agencies, only 5% of domestic infant adoptions in recent years were completely closed, meaning no contact between the adoptee and their birth parents. Research suggests that some level of openness tends to benefit adoptive families, birth parents and adoptees, but navigating those relationships still presents a host of challenges. Author Nicole Chung has documented her experience growing up as a Korean American adoptee in a white family in Southern Oregon in her two memoirs, “All You Can Ever Know” and “A Living Remedy.” Her own adoption was closed, but she recently wrote about the intricacies of open adoption for The Atlantic. She joins us to talk about her reporting.

We're bringing you two, count em TWO, episodes with women and non-binary firefighters and writers who have written books about their experiences working both in fire and on hotshot crews more specifically. The first in this short series is with author Kelly Ramsey, whose book WILDFIRE DAYS was released in June. Kelly and I spoke about some of the emotional toll of fighting fire—including the terrifying feeling of not feeling like you belong, especially in such an intense work environment—as well as the process of writing a book (including the nearly 50,000 words she wrote in her Notes app during her time in fire). A large part of our conversation centered on the many intricacies of hotshot culture that we both witnessed (and which, in some cases, left us both confounded). Many anecdotes, laughs and shared experiences ensued. This was a fun one to record and hopefully it's just as fun to listen to!Here's another link to Kelly's book in case you missed the first one ;) Here's the Life with Fire Patreon, in the event you'd like to support me through the transition to grad school (where I will continue to publish podcast episodes, and will have much more access to lots of smart fire people as I'll be in Missoula!)
