In 2020, he published Rhythmic Synchronicity, a book for non-drummers inspired by a course of the same name that Prieto developed at the Frost School of Music. In 2025 he released the book "WHAT ARE THE ODDS" the third book in his catalog, and it shows not only his passion for rhythm and drumming but furthermore his commitment to music education at large.

Modern industrial economies were made possible by automation and mass production, but also by something similar going on inside the world of management. Where once all the decisions were made by an identifiable boss, now they are farmed out to rule books, bureaucracies and computer algorithms — and nobody is individually accountable for them. The FT's Andrew Hill speaks to Dan Davies, economist and author of The Unaccountability Machine, who explains how the industrialisation of management decision-making was inevitable in our increasingly complex world but has had unforeseen consequences, such as “accountability sinks” and the rise of populist politicians. Nonetheless, there are solutions, including AI, the 1950s management theory of cybernetics and the return of the much-maligned middle manager.Andrew Hill is senior business writer at the Financial Times and consulting editor at FT Live. Julia Hobsbawm and Stefan Stern are joined by the FT's Andrew Hill to discuss Handy's life and legacy, his extremely sharp predictions about work, the humanism at the heart of his thinking, and his unconventional practices like ‘empty chair' exercises. We have included an interview with Charles Handy from the very first episode of The Nowhere Office. Andrew Hill and Steve Gerras return to the studio with host Tom Spahr to further explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in national defense. This episode delves into the critical question of human oversight in lethal force decisions with AI assistance. Join the debate as they dissect the potential consequences of over-reliance on human intuition and the bottlenecks human intervention can create in the process. They emphasize the need for transparency and open dialogue about AI's role in warfare. Steve and Andrew urge listeners to confront their own assumptions and engage in this crucial conversation. It's a great wrap-up to the topic and companion to their compelling three-part article.
In September 2024, Andrew Hill and Steve Gerras authored a compelling three-part series that explored the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in national defense. They provocatively argued that the conventional wisdom is wrong: human intuition is not indispensable, even though we might all wish it were. Recognizing the significance of this debate, War Room invited the authors to join host Tom Spahr for a deeper dive into their perspective. This episode, the first of a two-part discussion, dissects the complexities of human intuition, examining its inherent limitations and the potential for AI to surpass human capabilities in an increasingly automated battlespace.

Yesterday, I interviewed The Financial Times' Andrew Hill about the FT's best six business books of the year. Today, I talk to Michael Morris, the author of one of those books. In Tribal, Morris explains how the cultural instincts that divide us can also help bring us together. Our tribal instincts are humanity's secret weapon, Morris suggests. Rather than deriding tribal impulses for their irrationality, we should therefore recognize them as powerful levers that elevate performance, heal rifts, and set off shockwaves of cultural change. It's an intriguingly counter-intuitive thesis from the Columbia University behavioral psychologist which offers an escape from our relentless culture wars. Michael Morris works as a cultural psychologist at Columbia University in its graduate Business School and its Department of Psychology. Previously he taught for a decade at Stanford University. Morris received his PhD in psychology from the University of Michigan after earning undergraduate degrees in cognitive science and English literature at Brown University. His research has discovered cultural influences on styles of cognition, communication, and collaboration, as well as situational factors that cue them and social experiences that shift them. Outside of academia, Professor Morris advises corporations, government agencies, NGOs, and political campaigns about culture-related issues. He lives in New York City.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. The Financial Times has just announced their short list of the best six business books of 2024. Authors include KEEN ON regulars like Andrew Scott as well as Michael Morris, who will appear on tomorrow's show. As the competition's manager, Andrew Hill, told me when I visited him at the FT offices in London last week, a business book is a tricky thing to define. Perhaps, like pornography, you know it when you read it. In any case, the list is full of timely texts on the morality of economic growth, the nature of the modern corporation, Silicon Valley's control of the future of warfare, and, of course, how AI is about to change the world. We'll try to get all the short-list authors on the show before the winner is announced in early December. But in meantime, please read the six and let me know which one you think should win the award.Andrew Hill is senior business writer at the FT and consulting editor, FT Live. He is a former management editor, City editor, financial editor and comment and analysis editor. He is the author of ‘Leadership in the Headlines' (2016), a collection of his columns, and ‘Ruskinland' (2019), about the enduring influence of Victorian thinker John Ruskin. He joined the FT in 1988 and has also worked as New York bureau chief, foreign news editor and correspondent in Brussels and Milan. Andrew was named Business Commentator of the Year at the 2016 Comment Awards and Commentator of the Year at the 2009 Business Journalist of the Year Awards, where he also received a Decade of Excellence award.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Get 50% off your Brain Map at Peak Brain with code ANGELA at www.peakbraininstitute.com In the first of a two-part conversation, Angela talks to Dr Andrew Hill, a brain mapping expert, to explore the intricacies of brain mapping and its implications for optimising mental performance and overall well-being. They discuss the science behind brain waves, the importance of sleep quality, and how various lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise timing, can influence cognitive function. Andrew shares insights on the significance of deep sleep, the role of nutrition in brain health, and the effectiveness of sleep trackers, while debunking common myths about circadian rhythms and light exposure. KEY TAKEAWAYS Brain mapping involves measuring the brain's resting resources using EEG to analyse brainwave patterns. It helps identify tendencies related to attention, stress, sleep, and cognitive processing, rather than specific thoughts or feelings. Quality of sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall health. Poor sleep can lead to issues like memory difficulties and cognitive decline, but improvements in sleep quality can lead to quick recovery in brain function. Eating patterns significantly influence circadian rhythms. Fasting before bed and timing meals appropriately can enhance sleep quality and metabolic health. Morning activity in a fasted state is also beneficial for regulating circadian rhythms. While sleep trackers can provide insights into sleep duration and patterns, they may not accurately measure the quality of deep sleep or REM sleep. Self-reporting on sleep quality can be just as effective as using these devices. BEST MOMENTS "Brain mapping is measuring the patterns, the resting resources in your brain... it's mostly picking up how you tend to be. The resources in terms of their general way of being." "If you have a habit of eating before bed, you're going to chronically be under-rested because you're not getting into deep sleep." "I think humans are ultimately quite adaptable... people that think they're night owls are people that have dysregulated circadian rhythms." "The most sophisticated sleep trackers are no more accurate than self-report after a month of self-report." In the expansive realm of mental health and cognitive enhancement, neurofeedback emerges as a particularly promising approach to brain training. It offers exciting possibilities for optimizing brain function and mental well-being. But what is neurofeedback, and how does it work? Join us on a journey through the brain's intricate pathways, guided by insights from Andrew Hill, a pioneer in the field. Introduction to Neurofeedback Neurofeedback's origins trace back to the early 20th century with the discovery of the EEG (Electroencephalogram), which laid the groundwork for understanding brain waves. By the mid-1960s, the foundations of modern neurofeedback were established. This technique trains the brain's electrical activity through operant conditioning, similar to how a baby learns through exploration and feedback. To fully understand neurofeedback, one must first grasp the basics of EEG and the brain's complex structure. EEG measures the brain's electrical activity, providing insights into its function. The cortex, with its six layers of tissue, serves as the command center for processing information. Different brainwave frequencies, from Delta to Beta, reflect various states and functions of the brain, revealing its inner workings. Exploring Brainwave Frequencies Each brainwave frequency has its significance. Delta waves, linked to deep sleep, facilitate memory consolidation. Theta waves promote insight and creativity, although excessive Theta can cause distractibility. Beta waves are associated with focused attention but can become intrusive in excess, leading to OCD-like behaviors. Neurofeedback sessions are personalized experiences, tailored to individual goals and brainwave patterns. Through Quantitative EEG (QEEG), individuals can compare their brainwave patterns to those of age-matched peers, identifying unique traits. These sessions, typically lasting 20-30 minutes, gradually train the brain to regulate its activity, enhancing executive function, creativity, and emotional regulation. Despite its potential, neurofeedback faces skepticism from traditional medical and pharmaceutical industries, due to historical controversies. However, advancements in technology have made neurofeedback more accessible and effective in treating various conditions, facilitating broader acceptance. Dr. Barry Sterman's groundbreaking research inadvertently discovered neurofeedback's potential in reducing seizures. Despite early successes, funding challenges and skepticism slowed its widespread adoption. Andrew Hill's pioneering efforts have sought to unravel the mechanisms behind neurofeedback's effectiveness, pushing the field forward. The Future of Neurofeedback As research progresses, the future of neurofeedback looks promising. Current efforts aim to deepen our understanding of its mechanisms and enhance efficacy. Remote neurofeedback programs offer tailored brain training from home, supported by coaches and personalized protocols. Future advancements may include longitudinal brain data tracking and intelligent avatars for testing interventions, heralding a new era of personalized brain optimization. In essence, neurofeedback holds the key to unlocking the mind's potential, offering a pathway to enhanced cognitive function and mental well-being. As we delve deeper into the brain's mysteries, the possibilities appear limitless, ushering in a brighter future for humanity's most complex organ. In this podcast you will learn about: Neurofeedback: Harnessing brain waves for optimal mental well-being. EEG Insights: Understanding the brain's electrical activity for personalized training.
