The jazz standard "All The Things You Are" has been performed countless times by master jazz vocalists, 30s big bands, bebop small groups, hard-bop combos, modern deconstructionists, and even soon-to-be Kings of Pop. On this episode, Kirk takes listeners through the history of the now-famous tune, from its humble Broadway origins all the way to his recording studio in Portland, where he and some friends recorded an all-new arrangement just for Strong Songs.Music/Lyrics: Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein IIVersions Featured:Broadway Original Cast Recording of "Very Warm for May," - 1939Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, feat. Título: A Ferro!

Tonight's Jazz Feature had one of the most widely recorded trumpeters from the 50's and 60's who eventually went into other fields after being a big part of Jazz for so many years. Donald Byrd was one of the many young trumpeters who reflected in their own way the influence of the late Clifford Brown, who died at age 25 in a car crash. Byrd along with Lee Morgan were the young heralds of the trumpet in the 50's and in the 60's Freddie Hubbard was added to that list. Byrd recorded a lot and this is from his period just before he left Jazz for other musical pursuits. This band was one he worked with frequently during the mid-60's. The Jazz Feature album is called "Blackjack" . It spotlights a sextet with Byrd leading alto saxophonist Sonny Red (aka Sylvester Kyner), tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, Walter Booker on bass and the always smiling Billy Higgins on drums. The tunes are mostly original creations by Sonny Red and Donald Byrd. Byrd wrote the title track "Blackjack", a hip funky tune. Enjoy this fine date from Blue Note Records.

Virtuoso trumpeter Lee Morgan (born July 10, 1938) first rose to fame as a teenage member of Dizzy Gillespie's band. He played as a sideman with John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, Art Blakey in addition to producing a series of recordings as a leader, one of which “The Sidewinder” became a surprise commercial hit in 1964. He died tragically in 1972, shot at a club in NYC during a gig.
Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley (born July 7, 1930) was described as the “Middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone” by critic Leonard Feather, but most musicians think he punched well above that weight class. His career included stints with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Max Roach and Miles Davis as well as over thirty recordings as a bandleader in his own right. Many of his compositions have become jazz standards, and his soulful and lyrical solos stood out every time he played his horn.

Miles Davis (May 26, 1926 - Sept 28, 1991) unabashedly said that he revolutionized jazz music several times over his career. While an argument could be made for that statement, it is undeniable that the many musicians who passed through his bands over the years have definitely revolutionized the music. The list is long, virtually every musician who passed through Miles' many bands has had a lasting impact on the music, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul and the list goes on! Throughout his long career Miles retained his lyrical, introspective approach to soloing, regardless of the musicians he surrounded himself with.

Miles Davis is one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, and his album "Kind of Blue" is widely regarded as a masterpiece. Released in 1959, the album features some of the most iconic and recognizable jazz tunes ever recorded. The album was recorded over two days in March of 1959 and was composed of five tracks, each one a masterpiece in its own right. The album was released by Columbia Records and was an instant success, going on to become the best-selling jazz album of all time. The album is widely regarded as a landmark in the history of jazz, and is often cited as the definitive example of modal jazz. Modal jazz is a style of jazz that focuses on a particular musical mode or scale, rather than traditional chord changes. The first track on the album, "So What," is perhaps the most famous. The tune is based on a simple modal scale and features solos by Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane. The tune is a masterpiece of understated elegance, and showcases Davis' masterful use of space and restraint. The second track, "Freddie Freeloader," features a bluesy solo by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. The tune is named after a friend of Davis' who would always show up at gigs without any money. The third track, "Blue in Green," is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that features a muted trumpet solo by Davis. The tune was actually composed by pianist Bill Evans, who also played on the album. The fourth track, "All Blues," is another modal masterpiece that features a memorable bass line by Paul Chambers. The tune is notable for its use of a 6/8 time signature, which was unusual for jazz at the time. The final track, "Flamenco Sketches," is a series of improvisations based on a simple set of chords. The tune features solos by Davis and Coltrane, and is perhaps the most experimental track on the album. "Kind of Blue" is an album that rewards repeated listening, as there is always something new to discover in the intricate interplay between the musicians. It is a timeless masterpiece that continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Chicago born John Arnold Griffin 111 is better known as simply Johnny or in some cases "The Little Giant." Griffin was and is one of the major voices of the tenor saxophone. He emigrated to New York in late 1956 and was soon causing musical excitement in the Big Apple. He recorded his first Blue Note album and it was getting lots of play and in early 1957 he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He was doing sideman record dates as well. Tonight's Jazz Feature is his second Blue Note date and it's basically a jam type date with long tunes and plenty of solo time for all. Griffin requested this and it was agreed upon by Blue Note boss Alfred Lion. Griffin picked the young trumpet sensation still in his teens, Lee Morgan. Hank Mobley and John Coltrane were his other tenor saxophone partners. The rhythm section was powerful with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Griffin's boss, Art Blakey on drums. Two standard tunes were played and two Griffin originals comprised the date and everyone had a chance on all of these tunes to show their stuff. Unlike many blowing jam type sessions, the level was top notch on this one. This is Jazz at it's best.....in other words: the real deal! A Blowin' Session, tonight's Jazz Feature.

Milestones: Deep Dive Analyses of Landmark Albums with Angélika Beener
Acclaimed saxophonist, composer, producer, and educator Greg Osby joins host Angélika Beener to discuss Miles Davis's Someday My Prince Will Come at 60. One of the most originative musicians of his generation, Osby delves into what it means to be an artist in transition, as Miles Davis was in 1961; why Hank Mobley deserves much more love; and how expanding beyond the “Top 5” mentality will make for a better musician and scene, while Angélika speaks on the cultural significance of this now iconic album cover. This and so much more!
Greg Mottola's new CONFESS, FLETCH has so far flown under the radar in a modern-day moviegoing landscape to which it is not particularly suited, but we were won over by Jon Hamm's take on the character first portrayed by Chevy Chase, who here takes on a slacker-detective persona more reminiscent of the protagonist of Robert Altman's THE LONG GOODBYE. We're joined once again by longtime friend of the show and longer-time FLETCH quoter Noel Murray to dissect what makes this new iteration tick, before bringing Altman's film back into the picture to consider what these protagonists share, and what distinguishes them, in their ability to enter spaces uninvited, their propensity for comedic asides meant for an audience of themselves, and the supporting cast of quirky characters who surround them. Plus, Keith offers some follow-up viewing with his Your Next Picture Show pick, Robert Benton's THE LATE SHOW. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE LONG GOODBYE, CONFESS, FLETCH, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more.
