In September 1994, an 18-year-old musician named Lawrence Perelman sent a letter to William F. Buckley Jr., offering to perform a piano recital for him as a thank you for Buckley's political work. The friendship that ensued lasted until Buckley's final moments, all of which Perelman recounts in his new book, American Impresario: William F. Buckley Jr. and the Elements of American Character. One hundred years after Buckley's birth, Perelman joins “Firing Line with Margaret Hoover” to discuss his friendship with the original host of the program, which became the “centerpiece” of his life as he performed regularly at Buckley's dinner parties. Perelman says Buckley had a “superpower” for friendship, enabling him to develop relationships across the political spectrum and influence the world."If not for William F. Buckley Jr., there would be, I believe, no Ronald Reagan," says Perelman, whose parents were Soviet immigrants. "There would have not been an end to the Soviet Union, and we wouldn't have the freedoms that we had."Perelman also reflects on Buckley's character, the values he represented, and how Buckley might understand what's become of American conservatism since his death. Support for “Firing Line for Margaret Hoover” is provided by Robert Granieri, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, The Fairweather Foundation, Peter and Mark Kalikow, Cliff and Laurel Asness, The Meadowlark Foundation, Charles R. Nous sommes 30 décembre 1893, à Bruxelles. I like Trader Joe's because the clientele is half my age or less and I stand with my cart in a long double line with college kids and mothers of tiny children and I listen to fragments of phone conversations that are fresh and fascinating to me. These people lean toward eagerness and curiosity with a streak of satire; my people tend toward dismay and resignation. The lines move fast at Trader Joe's because the store has 24 checkout cashiers and as I come toward checkout, this being New York, I wonder how many of the cashiers are hoping to be actors, writers, artists, dancers, composers, and I worry about them as I catch sight. I was a dishwasher when I was their age and I hoped to be published in The New Yorker where my heroes Updike, Perelman, Thurber published. For me, the magazine was the Big League and I needed to climb out of the Minors and when I made it, at 27, I bought filet mignon. The Bigs are still around but the young and ambitious have found new roads — podcasting, for example — in which you pitch your own tent and invent your brand and see who stops to look at the goods. I find this sort of astonishing and wonderful. I look at the young and see how their ambition is to make their own good and productive life rather than win the silver trophy or be admitted to the Big Shot Society. This is a public episode. Running for office is a fool's errand if you think you can win and radically change the system from within. But an election campaign can serve other purposes for political organizers. A campaign provides a platform, a megaphone... media attention. The process of campaigning puts you in touch with people in the community. As Steve puts it, an election allows you to “build coalitions and radicalize people.” Jen Perelman's need to run against Debbie Wasserman Schultz was clear: “I knew that we weren't going to win, but we made significant strides in what my bigger mission is. At the end of the day, I just was not going to sit there and let her represent Jewish people and not stand up for Palestine.” Steve has been on Jen's show, JENerational Change, a number of times, where he has successfully convinced her of the validity and value of MMT. In this interview we get her take-aways from her most recent campaign. She and Steve talk about the popularity of programs that would provide jobs and healthcare. Election results represent the needs of capital, not the public. The conversation also touches on the moral implications of violence and how societal structures perpetuate violence against marginalized groups. Jen Perelman is host of the podcast and YouTube show, JENerational Change. She is a native Floridian and has run against Debbie Wasserman Schultz twice. So far, she has not won in the traditional sense. On Jen's Linkedin profile, she explains: “From my earliest days of practicing law, I've fought for those who can't fight for themselves. I've helped the poor & indigent receive proper counsel and helped young women receive a judicial bypass for an onerous process for their reproductive rights.” @JenforFL25 on X

On today's show, Alex and Calvin continue to break down the concept of “Manipulation” in rhetoric and political discourse, recapping part one of this series, demonstrating strategies for identifying and critiquing manipulation, and discussing how this kind of large-scale “mind control” is affecting contemporary foreign policy discourse in the US.The term manipulation, as we define it, comes from a school of linguistic and discourse analysis known as Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), which is primarily concerned with the ways language is used to reinforce inequality and power differentials in society. We walk through how the term is defined by CDS scholar Teun van Dijk, from his landmark 2006 article “Discourse and Manipulation.” In it, van Dijk gives us a toolkit for understanding 3 different levels of manipulation: (1) social, which designates the human relationships, power positions, and organizational and political resources required to effect manipulation at scale; (2) cognitive, which designates how manipulative language forms mental models that influence people's thoughts and actions in the world; and (3) discursive, which captures the various linguistic, stylistic, and rhetorical strategies that tend to recur in manipulation. This time, to put this term in context, we analyze an example of discourse manipulation surrounding US foreign policy, specifically as it relates to Israel's ongoing war on Gaza: President Joe Biden's November 18 opinion article in the Washington Post, entitled “The U.S. won't back down from the challenge of Putin and Hamas.” We closely analyze how President Biden uses manipulation strategies straight out of Van Dijk to persuade WaPo-reading liberals to ignore both the US's constant and substantial material support for Israel's war and its own military's history of bloody and destructive imperialism throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and elsewhere in the world. We also note various tactics that the president deploys to naturalize inequality and normalize bigotry, all while touting the US's role as the “essential” peace-loving, freedom-spreading nation. “The U.S. won't back down from the challenge of Putin and Hamas” - Joe BidenLink to Part One of this SeriesWorks and Concepts Cited in this Episode:Azoulay, A., & Ophir, A. One of the most progressive facts about Judaism is that the Torah and the religious texts around our holy scripture encourage sex. That makes Judaism one of the few sex-positive religions in the world! In some religions, sex is purely for procreation. In Judaism, you're commanded to have sex for pleasure on certain occasions AND are required to feel attraction. We're required to have sex and pleasure our partners a certain number of times per month depending on our jobs. We're even required to use birth control at times! How can a religion that is famously regarded as ancient and isolating in nature be so liberal with their intimate acts? Sex therapist Claire Perelman brings this taboo subject to the religious forefront. On this episode of Bad Jew, Claire teaches host Chaz Volk about our requirements and teachings revolving around this devious subject matter. Chaz takes this episode a step further by challenging Claire's personal juxtaposition on this to see what can be gained from traditional lifestyle choices that most don't live by. About Claire Perelman: I have always been extremely passionate about helping people find the most fulfillment, contentment, and pleasure in their lives. I also know that reaching out for support - especially from a therapist - can be incredibly daunting. I strive to create a welcoming, non-judgmental, affirming therapeutic space where you can feel comfortable speaking whatever is on your heart and mind - and I fully embrace utilizing humor and cursing to do so. Therapy isn't always easy, but it should feel like a space where you are listened to, cared for, and respected; in my office, this is my standard. I grew up in Los Angeles, committing my teenage years to going to as many concerts in Hollywood as physically possible. I spent the next eight years soaking in the sun, studying, and working in San Diego. After completing my Masters in Social Work, I moved to the Bay Area and have been here ever since! Personally, relationships (of all kinds!) have always been the source of my greatest pleasure and my greatest heartbreak, which led me to become a Sex Therapist. I believe that life is built on relationships and connection to others, and I want to help you navigate all of the complexities that life offers - because I have been (and continue to be) there, too. I offer couples therapy, individual therapy, and therapy with teens and adolescents both remotely and in person. I can meet for in-person therapy sessions both in San Francisco and in Oakland. One of the most powerful connections we can form is with our therapists, and I am honored to be able to witness the totality of the courage, strength, pain, and complexity that each person brings into my office. You can't talk about physical culture during the Victorian Era without discussing “Muscular Christianity.” I describe how this movement developed in the mid-19th century, ways in which it was practiced within and outside the UK, and how it intersected with phenomena that are still with us today, such as nationalism, imperialism, and eugenics. ***** References Graham, Alex. “Friedrich Ludwig Jahn & German Nationalism.” https://counter-currents.com/2017/11/friedrich-ludwig-jahn-and-german-nationalism/ Heffernan, Conor. “Indian Clubs in Victorian Britain.” https://physicalculturestudy.com/2022/01/19/indian-clubs-in-victorian-britain/ Hughes, Thomas.
