Nine years with no evidence of disease—yet Megan-Claire Chase's cancer journey isn't over. As she once fought cancer alongside her mother, she now faces something even harder: losing her. In this episode, Megan-Claire shares a deeply vulnerable side—a daughter losing her mother. Facing your own mortality is one thing, but facing the mortality of your loved ones—friends, family, fellow cancer patients, and survivors—and the hole they leave behind is something entirely different. Key Highlights: Witnessing her mother's cancer progression brings anticipatory grief, yet despite that grief, Megan strives to learn as much about her mother as possible, including fond memories from her childhood. Despite the anticipatory grief, Megan and her mother engage in a bonding exercise using question cards, and she records their conversations. One of the most meaningful things she learned was that her mother reflects on her life with joy—ultimately, the greatest goal is to leave this world happy. Facing your own mortality can unearth many emotions: the need to be confident and not tolerate disrespect, the desire to live life on your own terms and to the fullest, yet also a deep sense of loneliness and isolation. About our guest: Check out the first episode Megan-Claire Chase appeared in here.  Megan-Claire Chase, also known as Warrior Megsie, is the Breast Cancer Program Director and host of the Our BC Life podcast at SHARE Cancer Support. This week we are sharing a favorite episode from the archives as we take a little fall break from our regular podcast schedule to enjoy some Halloween fun. Production assistant Monica Haro selected this episode from January 2022 to reshare. Enjoy!Megan-Claire Chase was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer at 39 after watching her mother go through her own cancer. Her mom was still very much in need of caregiving when Megan was diagnosed and this led to some hard truths about being a daughter and a caregiver to a parent. What do you do when you need love and nurturing while at the same time being that for a parent? And so I, as I'm talking to you right now, I am in pain. And I often have people say, ‘you don't look like you're in pain.' And I'm like, look, it's not Halloween yet. I don't want to scare you. If I looked how I truly, truly felt on the daily, you would think you're in a scary movie. And so, dealing with multiple types of pain, chronic pain, is something I never, ever thought would be part of my cancer experience." Halloooooo, fellow book clubbers! This month, we are looking at best-selling author Luanne Rice's pacey thriller, The Shadow Box. This book jumps before and after the day artist Claire Chase was brutally attacked, to explain just what happened to her. Claire survives before going into hiding and has her suspicions on who her attacker likely was - her admired husband and state attorney, Griffin Chase, who is also running for governor. On the day of Claire's attack, she was about to launch a shadow box at her art exhibition, inspired by an unforgivable act she was convinced her husband was responsible for years ago. On that same day, one of Claire's neighbours was also killed. Throughout this novel, as both investigations unfold, we learn exactly how both incidents overlap, and the extent of Griffin Chase's power over the circle that surrounds him. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle ask allllll ze questions: Did Rice's thriller keep us on our toes? What did we love about the book? And finally, were we satisfied with the ending? Yet, each experience has something to add to your life in some way. Claire Chase, the Creator of the Resilience Thinking Method™ and Founder of Resilience By Design Consulting, LLC teaches people resiliency thinking, which is very similar to the way that she views success; as a constant process of transformation. Growing up Claire believed her set path would be to grow up to be a lawyer. It wasn't until she stepped foot into that career, that she realized she much rather enjoyed the research side of things, deciding to change her direction. Claire now specializes in helping people and teams make better decisions, cultivating easier pathways of innovation and creativity. On this episode of Success is Subjective, Claire joins Joanna to share her journey as she navigated her career path throughout college and came to find her passion in research. Halloooooo, fellow book clubbers! This month, we are looking at best-selling author Luanne Rice’s pacey thriller, The Shadow Box. Claire survives before going into hiding and has her suspicions on who her attacker likely was - her admired husband and state attorney, Griffin Chase, who is also running for governor. Doch Ensembles, Komponistinnen und Festivals haben den Kopf nicht in den Sand gesteckt: Sie haben das Leben auf Distanz künstlerisch fruchtbar gemacht, kreativ auf die Krise reagiert und neue Formate geschaffen. Overview Megan-Claire Chase loves to talk. But after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Megs found that her anxiety made it hard to speak up. So what'd she do? She started a blog. Today Megs - also known as "Warrior Megsie" in the cancer world - is a voice for change and hope, writing about chronic pain, infertility, anger, race, and much more. In this conversation, I speak with Megs about why she started writing, what keeps her going, why she doesn't want to be labeled as a black cancer survivor, and what she's found most rewarding. Highlights 7:15 - "It's all for me. I think that's what's so authentic because I don't write for clicks or likes or retweets." 8:15 - "A lot of times people see as one way. I have a very big personality... but I'm actually really, really serious at times. And I hurt a lot but I don't always show that. I tell people I'm winning Oscars every day because you never really know how I'm feeling until I write it out." 9:15 - "I've unfortunately dealt with so much that's been difficult that the only way I can really release that stress and that negativity or that worry and frustration is through writing it." 10:30 - "I think as I've gotten older I don't care, really, what other people think. I'm not worried someone's going to be like 'Oh my god, this is horrible!' I'm not writing for that. It's literally just to release these emotions. Whether it's happy, whether it's sad, who knows what I'm going to come up with. But it's me at the end of the day." 12:30 - "I had to do what I had to do so I wouldn't go crazy, and it just happened to be writing." 14:15 - "I just feel it's so unfair to have that pressure to be positive in front of everyone, so when I wrote those particular pieces I was helping another person make space for that." 16:15 - "What a lot of people don't realize within the cancer world is a lot of times it can cause chronic pain." 19:30 - "Yeah I'm angry because this body is alien to me. I don't know it." 26:15 - "Just because you survived doesn't mean you're totally okay, and I felt it was important that people could see that." 28:30 - "When I look in the mirror, I see all the other stuff that's mixed in with me... so I get really upset when people see me as one thing. I feel like in the cancer world I do not want to be labeled the black cancer survivor." 31:30 - "Stop making all these assumptions and just ask the question." 32:15 - "I just don't like the idea of a lot of organizations trying to make me a token." Claire, a Social Capital enthusiast, is a Resilience Thinker, public speaker, and design strategist. She is always thinking about how we can enact resilience thinking to be more productive in our daily lives. Claire grew up in a southern Illinois and her small town, community experience stuck with her even as she moved to Chicago. She began asking herself, “How do we cultivate that sense of community as we move on in our lives?”. While getting her Ph.D., Claire researched resilience thinking, specifically studying how we can better process information and find common values in order to create collective actions that can make the world a better place. Resilience Thinkingsays that we have these things we do, an interaction or conversation, these moments where we are met with conflict or things we don’t understand. Often, we want to walk away or bulldoze over those things we don’t agree with, but Claire encourages us to go deeper. How we feel is important, but if we want to move forward and have a productive conversation then we need to take a step back and reflect on our own role in what is happening. Instead of shutting the other side/person down, what happens when we seek out the values of what they are saying or what is embedded in what they are experiencing? Most often, trust is the component that is missing. Though we may not have the same experiences, we likely hold the same values and if we can find those commonalities, we can learn from them and it will help us figure out a resilient solution that transforms the problem. Studies show that we, as humans, largely share the same values even though we might have different experiences. Social Capital, finding commonality and building trust become the bridge between us. Claire has recently launched a podcast of her own called “Meet the Moment'' a show where she and her co-host ask big, sometimes tough, questions and have candid conversations about how we can look at this thing that’s happening for all of us in different ways to create change. Claire facilitates the Resilience Collective group and has created a series of courses called “Resilience Thinking & You” that will launch next month. Claire believes that everyone has the power to shift their mindset to see themselves as students and designers of the worlds we seek. Listen to this episode to hear how Claire builds Social Capital and how she believes Resilience Thinking put into action can change the world around us.    Name: Claire Chase, Ph.D.Company: Resilience By Design ConsultingInstagram: @resilience.by.design & @meetthemomentpodcastCompany Website: www.resiliencebydesign.netLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/claire-chase-ph-d-0a39556/  Email Sarah at sarah@sarahfrancesmcdaniel.comLearn more at www.socialcapitalexpert.com and www.sarahfrancesmcdaniel.com

https://www.instagram.com/r.trufanov/ After 6 years of creating sunrise soundtracks from atop the Robot Heart bus, it is a challenge to avoid submitting to a formulaic approach. One of the biggest perks of producing a Robot Heart sunrise is that you can take risks; explore soundscapes and dynamics, knowing that the mystical Deep Playa setting allows for pauses and quiet moments that don’t translate in loud clubs or multi-stage festivals. This year, the set was a journey starting with robots and ending with humans. I wanted the sun to come up to the sound of arguing AI robots. What you heard was a transcript from the actual negotiation between two AI bots at Facebook earlier that summer; thenextweb.com/artificial-intell…its-own-language/ Other than it creating a surreal environment as the sun came up, it also proved a perfect palette cleanser to transition from night into day. The sounds of flutist Claire Chase immediately afterwards set the tone for the 90 minutes to follow. I remembered Robert Miles (we lost him this year) with a beautiful guitar version of his song "Children", and then introduced spiritual emcee and rising star Elliott LaRue. He delivered a chilling live message from the top of the bus about our challenges and responsibilities as humans. And that about summed up the Scumfrog sunrise from 2017. Tonsättaren och performern Du Yun lever numera i New York. Till henne skriver bl a Tristan Murail musik. The year 2012 supplied plenty of headline-making moments in classical music. There was the infamous marimba ring tone at the New York Philharmonic, the opera singer with the controversial tattoos, the composer accused of plagiarism, and cellos booted off airplanes. It was a tough year for American orchestras and a good year for entrepreneurship. In this podcast, three highly opinionated critics give us their reviews of 2012: Anne Midgette, classical music critic of the Washington Post; Steve Smith, a classical music critic for the New York Times and music editor at Time Out New York; and Heidi Waleson, a classical music critic for the Wall Street Journal. Below are excerpts of some of their comments. Surprises Heidi: David Lang's love fail, written for the female vocal quartet Anonymous 4 (right). “It was a beautifully haunting, Medieval-Modern, strange modern take on the Tristan Und Isolde story, which was semi-staged at BAM. It was actually a stunningly beautiful piece.” Anne: “One of my favorite moments was a very local moment...The University of Maryland [orchestra] came out dressed in street clothes with their instruments and began moving around the stage as they played Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun. It was a wonderful example of what could be done with orchestras if they think a little outside the box.” Steve: “The reason I categorized David T. Little’s opera Dog Days as a big surprise is frankly I didn’t know that he had this in him...He was out at Montclair State University’s Peak Performances series with a full evening-length opera based on an apocalyptic story by Judy Budnitz…There were terrifying things about it and absolutely joyous things about it but in the end I thought, here’s a team that has actually moved opera forward.” Listen to the opera on Q2 Music. Trends Heidi: On interesting new operas showing up outside of major producing companies: “I thought, maybe if people from the regular producing opera companies actually see [Dog Days], maybe somebody will get an idea that this is actually the sort of thing that can happen in the opera house.” Anne: “There’s no question that some of the most exciting stuff in opera is going on in smaller spaces – and some of the most innovative thinking." Steve: On entrepreneurship in classical music: “People confronted with a certain stodginess or intractability in major companies are just putting on the shows themselves, or doing the kind of programming they feel ought to exist. I’m thinking about ICE, the International Contemporary Ensemble, whose founder Claire Chase won a MacArthur this year, which was richly deserved.” Disappointments & Low Points Heidi: “It was the Metropolitan Opera Ring – and I’m sure I’ll have a lot of company in that one. It took a lot of hits and for good reason. It was just a very big elaborate backdrop of a set for a not very stimulating concept.” [Right: A scene from Die Walküre (Photo: Ken Howard)] Anne: “The problem with some of the concepts that are applied to operas – and I’m a great defender of innovation in opera direction – but a lot of times you think up this great idea and a lot of times the opera isn’t actually about that there’s only so far you can go with the idea.” Steve: "What perturbed me is you basically still have to go out of town, even if it’s just crossing the river to New Jersey, to hear what’s really happening and what’s really interesting in the operatic sphere period." Anne: On American Orchestras: “While it’s both tragic and deplorable that there have been so many lockouts, strikes, seasons disrupted – the Minnesota Orchestra, really one of the exciting orchestras in the country is still not playing – all of this was foreseeable. The managements seem to be acting as if ‘oh my goodness, all of the sudden we’re having these financial crises.’ All of those difficult moments have come home to roost.” High Points Steve: What many of the year's most exciting productions this year had in common was the producer Beth Morrison, "who is enabling a lot of really exciting work that’s going on right now. Beth Morrison Productions is involved in a lot of these things – in staged concerts, in grassroots opera. She has been a real bolt of vitality and innovation that has been much needed and is having a great impact.” Anne: On the John Cage Centennial: “I’m not a big fan of artist centennials. In classical music they’re rammed down our throats, these anniversaries. But with all of the festivals and activities and concerts, it really allowed a new perspective on Cage...It was a centennial and an anniversary that for me really made a big difference.” Heidi: The Juilliard Historical Performance Program under its new director Robert Mealy (above): "You just don't get a big orchestra of American players playing who can play this in this really stylistically correct and distinct way" (after hearing a concert of excerpts from two Rameau ballets).
