When Liz Ramirez' nieces came to visit her for a week in 1994, they had a nice time. They went to the pool. They played basketball. They ate hot dogs. Liz's roommate, Kristie Mayhugh met the girls. So did Liz and Kristie's friends, Cassandra Rivera and Anna Vasquez. At the end of the week, the girls hugged their aunt goodbye and went back to their dad's house. Later, the girls came forward with a shocking allegation. They said that their aunt and her three friends had gang raped them. There'd been drugs. Weapons. Satanic overtones. The most disturbing part? It was all made up. Then Brandi tells us about Michele Neurauter, whose death inside her upstate New York home was designed to look like a suicide. But something about it seemed off. Michele had an odd rope mark on her chin. Then there was the timing. Michele had recently won a long-fought, bitter custody battle for her youngest daughter. Why would she do this now?  And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Mystery of the San Antonio four,” by Maurice Chammah for the Texas Observer The documentary, “Southwest of Salem” “San Antonio Four to host fundraiser for Innocence Project of Texas,” for Henry Ramos for KENS5 “What it's like to be falsely branded a satanic child molester,” by Chase Madar for Vice “How junk science and anti-lesbian prejudice got four women sent to prison for more than a decade,” by Linda Rodriguez Mcrobbie for Slate “Inside case behind wrongful conviction doc ‘Southwest of Salem'” by Bridgette Dunlap for Rolling Stone “Sex assault case,” Associated Press “Remaining women in abuse case freed,” by Will Weissert for the Associated Press “San Antonio Four exonerated in child rape case,” by Emanuella Grinberg for CNN “Judge clears records of wrongfully convicted San Antonio 4,” by Tim Fitzsimons for NBC News In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Karrie's Choice” episode 48 Hours “Family Values” episode Mastermind of Murder “Man Coerces Daughter To Help Him Kill His Ex-Wife And Stage Crime As A Suicide” by Joe Dziemianowicz “Man pleads guilty to killing ex-wife, conspiring with daughter in Corning murder” by Jeff Murray, Star Gazette “Life without parole: Lloyd Neurauter killed ex-wife with help from their daughter” by Jeff Murray, Star Gazette “Karrie Neurauter, manipulated into helping kill mother, released from prison” by Jeff Smith, Star Gazette YOU'RE STILL READING? Melanie, Bryan, and Chris discuss the Trump administration’s recent struggles to explain its policy toward Iran. What does President Donald Trump hope to achieve? What evidence is there that the policy of “maximum pressure” will succeed? Does the administration have the authority to launch military attacks against Iran, either under the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) or under Article II of the Constitution? Or must they go to Congress for a new AUMF? And to what extent do various personnel decisions explain the frequent misalignment between Trump’s stated objectives and the actual results? This episode also includes praise for a belated effort to reclaim Congress’s war powers, while Harvard earns scorn for its counterproductive ploy to advance gender equality. There’s criticism, too, for short-sighted opponents of another round of military base closures. Links "Oversight of the Trump Administration's Iran Policy," S. In this episode, we discuss the weaponisation of human rights, i.e. are human rights always "good"; or are they at times used for more sinister ends? How has the use of human rights changed from the days in which they paved the way for movements around the globe, from the civil rights movement to the struggle to end apartheid, till today? Helping us delve into these murky waters, we were joined by Journalist, retired Civil Rights Lawyer, and Author of 'The Passion of Chelsea Manning', Chase Madar.

We speak to journalist Ben Adler about what Trump can and can't do to ruin the planet and what states can do to try to save it. Ben and I get into a debate over Chelsea Manning being a litmus test for political orientation, which is funny because Ben doesn't cover that and doesn't know a lot about the case and neither did I, though that didn't stop either of us from arguing about it. To be fair, I'm the host and Ben was admitted upfront this wasn't his area of expertise. So, I then talk to Chase Madar, a lawyer, writer ad author of The Passion of Bradley Manning (written and published before Chelsea had come out as transgender and changed names)about the case, Judith Miller's tweets, and why journalists need to stop treating politicians the way Park Slope parents treat their enabled and coddled children. When it comes to criminal justice reform, "the time for positive reenforcement is past."

Welcome to another Political Podcast from BowlersDesk.com. We have a different sort of show for you today. This time we talk about our country and how it keeps secrets. I sat down with Chase Madar civil rights lawyer, Slate.com blogger, Blogger for the Nation and now author of “The Passion of Bradley Manning”. Chase is an advocate for whistle blowers. He wants everyone to know how our country creates secrets and what it means to be a whistleblower. Chase thinks Manning and Snowden a leaked info they believed important for the country to know. Chase points out that while what Manning leaked amounted to the largest leak of classified documents ever, it still is only 1% of one year of data. Chase isn’t advocating total transparency in my opinion, he does what a change in the way our system of secret works. It was a very interesting hour and well worth the beer and tortas I bribed him with. Agree or not Chase makes some very interesting points. You be the judge. “International law should certainly be an important strand in any debate about going to war, but it should not dominate and crowd out discussions about morality, about prudence, about efficacy, and most of all about consequences.” In the July edition of Le Monde diplomatique, New York-based civil rights lawyer Chase Madar writes about how far we have drifted from the post-war vision of international law as an instrument for regulating and upholding a peaceful world order. In his analysis, international law has in fact become what he calls “a supple instrument for war”, as evinced most recently in the case of international intervention in Libya. In this interview for Le Monde diplomatique he explains his reasoning to George Miller. To listen, click here.
