Donald Trump is making it explicit. In an angry diatribe to a right-wing podcaster, Trump told his usual lies about vote-cheating by undocumented immigrants, but this time he explicitly called on Republicans to “take over the voting.” He also darkly promised something new out of Georgia, where his FBI is investigating an election center. He singled out supposed fraud in Minnesota, lying that he won it three times. And he said he's not backing down in the state. Taken all together, the threat is clear: Trump may try to use federal forces to interfere in the midterms, in part by using ICE to intimidate voters and foment crisis. Notably, this comes as MAGA media figures are loudly calling on Trump to escalate the ICE crackdowns, as Media Matters documents. We talked to reporter Gillian Brockell, who regularly scrutinizes ICE and has a new piece detailing how ICE is getting more cruel. We discuss what Trump can do to interfere in the elections, how far his threats can really get, and how MAGA conceives of ICE as an instrument of authoritarian state terror. President Trump and the GOP are in a growing panic over ICE. Trump's advisers are sinking into recriminations. Republican officials are publicly admitting that his immigration agenda “seems to be not working” and that the GOP is “losing” the political battle over it. Others are suggesting that Alex Pretti's killing was “murder” and that it's time to “recalibrate.” Yet MAGA figures are pulling in the other direction. Media Matters has a good roundup: Many are urging Trump to escalate, with white supremacist Nick Fuentes labeling Pretti a “race traitor.” MAGA doesn't want to let the GOP even appear to moderate. We talked to Jennifer Rubin, editor-in-chief of The Contrarian, who has a new piece urging Democrats to seize this moment. We discuss how MAGA's white nationalism has landed “moderate” Republicans in a trap, why this provides an opening to divide the Trump coalition, and what Democrats can do to demonstrate that they side with the American people against Trump-MAGA's violent lawlessness. Dave Davis is joined by David Lynch to dissect another deeply worrying Liverpool performance, this time away at Bournemouth. With dominant possession but almost no attacking clarity, Liverpool once again fall short where it matters most. The discussion focuses on a familiar pattern: sterile control, defensive fragility, and a complete lack of structure in the final third. Lynch breaks down the underlying numbers, from chance quality to XG disparity, and explains why the result was not unfortunate, but fully deserved. As Liverpool sink further into poor form, questions begin to mount about tactical direction, player confidence, and whether this side is regressing in plain sight. Learn more about your ad choices. With Liverpool now drifting outside the Champions League places, Dave Davis and David Lynch confront the question many supporters are now asking out loud. Is Arne Slot under real threat? This episode cuts through emotion and focuses on evidence, laying bare Liverpool's alarming run of form across nearly half a Premier League season. Lynch outlines why five wins in eighteen league games cannot be dismissed, why underlying metrics offer no comfort, and why comparisons with rival squads only deepen the concern. As the table tightens and pressure grows, this is a sober, data-led assessment of how precarious Liverpool's position has become, and how quickly it could worsen. Learn more about your ad choices. Dave Davis and David Lynch turn their attention away from the pitch and towards Liverpool's decision-makers. From the stalled January transfer window to uncertainty around key squad players, this episode asks who is truly accountable for the club's current drift. Lynch examines the logic, or lack of it, behind potential exits, contract noise, and a strategy that appears increasingly reactive. The conversation also tackles the silence from above, questioning why sporting leadership remains unseen while pressure lands squarely on the head coach. As Liverpool face a defining stretch of fixtures, this is a forensic look at a club seemingly short on answers when clarity is most needed. Learn more about your ad choices. All the cool kids are doing it! -------------------- Before the end of the year, I had my annual conversation with the always wonderful Evlondo Cooper, senior writer with the climate and energy program at Media Matters. In this conversation, we explore the new challenges of climate reporting that we saw unfold in the politically charged environment of 2025. We looke at the specific changes under the Trump administration and how a continued lack of diverse voices in climate coverage is helping to contribute to the disconnect between climate issues and political discourse. Additionally, Cooper tracks the ongoing missing context in major climate events of recent years, especially around climate solutions and harms. We look at the role of media in holding politicians accountable, the gaps in current coverage, and how climate media problems visible in recent years may actually be getting worse. Original air date: September 5, 2025 At a Senate hearing on Thursday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr. got massacred by harsh questioning from Democrats and Republicans. They called out his anti-vax views and condemned his decapitation of our public health system. But Matt Gertz of Media Matters noticed something funny: Fox News' coverage bent over backward to portray him as pro-vaccine, as someone working to make vaccines available to Americans, not trying to restrict them. We think that reveals just how shaky President Trump's political position has become amid RFK's reign of destruction. Fox accidentally demonstrated just how deeply split Republicans are over this ongoing anti-vax fiasco—and how desperate Trump's propagandists are to cover up the truth about it. In this segment, Gertz relates more of the evasions he saw on Fox, explains how Fox is struggling to navigate many conflicting currents inside MAGA, and predicts RFK's lunacy is hurtling us toward a much bigger reckoning. Dave Davis and David Lynch dissect Liverpool's chaotic draw with Leeds in a game that somehow felt closer to a defeat. They break down the set piece issues that have haunted the season, Ekitike's brace and the debate around Isak being benched, Szoboszlai's standout display, Curtis Jones' impact, Konate's costly moment and another frustrating showing from Cody Gakpo. Dave Davis and David Lynch dive into a defining week that could make or break Liverpool's season. With Arne Slot's position weakening by the game, they unpack the mounting pressure after his pointed comments on Konaté, the leaked Van Dijk clip and the growing feeling that the manager is running out of road. Lynch outlines why Liverpool's struggles are not a blip but the continuation of a rot that began last season. Five points from matches against sides in the bottom half is nowhere near good enough, and even the improved defensive shape is masking a team that no longer creates, no longer controls and no longer convinces. The pair also turn the spotlight on Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, questioning how the sporting leadership has avoided deeper scrutiny as the Salah row, poor recruitment calls and tactical stagnation converge. With Salah's interview tying the club's hands, Slot may now survive longer — but only because Liverpool cannot afford to look like they are bowing to player power. Then comes the football: Inter at the San Siro and Brighton at Anfield. Two opponents in better form, with clearer identities, and with every reason to fancy their chances. Dave and Lynch outline why defeat in both games is entirely plausible and why Slot's compact, low-event football feels like a short-term sticking plaster rather than a solution. Total uncertainty. Total chaos. A club waiting for answers that may not come. This week could reshape everything. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Dave Davis and David Lynch break down the most dramatic off field moment of Liverpool's season as Mohamed Salah detonates a bombshell interview that has sent shockwaves through the club. They analyse why Salah feels scapegoated after being benched for three straight matches, why his limited minutes are being viewed as a statement, and how his ego, status and frustration have collided at the worst possible moment. The discussion digs into every angle: Arne Slot's handling of the situation, the sporting structure's misread of Salah's physical decline, and the complete failure of leadership that has allowed a straightforward selection issue to turn into a civil war. Dave and Lynch explore Salah's “someone wants me gone” claim, the wild conspiracy theories now circling, and why none of them truly stand up. They also examine why Salah going public has made an already unstable dressing room even more combustible and why it now forces Liverpool into a decision that could define the season. A huge day lies ahead with open training, Inter prep and January looming and the truth is no one comes out of this clean. A raw, uncompromising look at a crisis spiralling out of control.
