Why is he a former politician, you ask? Well after running a campaign against Nancy Pelosi and getting buried by racist attacks from liberals, Shahid realized a sad truth about politics: “Politicians, as well as journalists and lawyers,” he told us. “Are all about careerism. People care about their careers more than the principles of their profession.” And so self-proclaimed non-racists like Pelosi use racist attacks against opponents of color, like Shahid and Nina Turner, to keep their claws sunk deep into power, shielding themselves from any review of their own anti-democratic voting records. But Shahid doesn't put all the blame on these power-hungry, corporate vultures for choosing power over human values: “It's impossible not to in a fascist country.” Shahid continues to explain how corporate Democrats cover up their power-hungry policy through distraction, claiming Donald Trump and January 6 are the real threats to democracy — all so that Americans are too beaten down from hearings to realize our government is busy overthrowing democracies around the world and spying on us at home. Plus, watch the full interview to hear how Shahid got arrested for confronting former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper: “Why are you above the law for perjury and mass surveillance while Eric Garner lies dead in the street?” And catch yesterday's Thursday Throwdown: Media Wants No $$ for Workers, More for FBI It's all this, and more, on this week's episode of Useful Idiots. San Francisco has a real bad rep in the national imagination these days. If you follow the news it can feel like this place is melting — nonstop crime, homelessness, hardened villains roaming the streets, Walgreens stores under siege, citizens cowering in fear. It's like there's a big media psyop being run to make it seem like even the tiniest decent left-leaning policy is leading to ruin and destruction. Even New Yorkers are afraid of San Francisco now.Evgenia and I have wanted to focus more on local politics ever since we moved here a year ago. So to kick it off we decided talk with Misha Steier, a SF native who's been involved with the DSA and the left scene. Misha and I first bonded over the Shahid Buttar fiasco, which the left in SF helped prop up and which I helped bring down — to everyone's benefit but Shahid's.We talk about SF's long-gone radical cred, people's ignorance of local politics, ways to combat moneyed interests electorally, and the importance of journalism for democracy. After a week of Afghanistan hot takes, one thing is clear: the left has an isolationism problem. Everyone agrees that imperialism is bad. But disagreement has emerged over what obligation, if any, America has to the country it's occupied for 20 years, and the individuals left behind. On one hand, some folks are arguing that there's no good way to withdraw, and that any discussion about how to improve Biden's actions this month is an expression of imperialist sympathies. On the other hand, leftists shocked by images of men falling from cargo planes and stories about the unique threats faced by women are horrified by the indifference to the human cost of withdrawal. Is there a principled middle ground between isolationism and imperialism? Is it possible to articulate a standard by which "intervention" is justified? Would the left argue against humanitarian intervention in Rwanda? What about WWII? This week, we have a robust conversation about the vacuum created by the fact that the world lacks international institutions with the authority to mediate global disputes, what America should do in lieu of said institutions, and how we got into this mess in the first place. Our guests assess whether we should all be "Biden Bros" on this issue, or if a more nuanced approach would serve the left better. We're joined by Graeme Smith, journalist and author of The Dogs are Eating Them Now: Our War in Afghanistan, Stephen Semler, co-founder of Security Policy Reform Institute -- a think tank developing and promoting ideas to align U.S. foreign policy with working-class interests -- and Shahid Buttar, a former congressional candidate and constitutional lawyer. We discuss Judi Hershman, the former advisor to Whitewater Prosecutor Ken Starr, who writes in Medium that she had a yearlong affair with the married Evangelical Christian. Hershman also writes that Starr arranged a sweetheart deal for convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein even though Starr knew Epstein had raped way too many underaged girls to count. Starr, she also says, covered up a rape when he ran Baylor University in order to protect its football team, kept Brett Kavanaugh's abusive behavior towards women secret, and believes our Founding Fathers got it all wrong on separation of Church and State. Joe and I had the amazing opportunity to speak with progressive leader and Medicare for All supporter Shahid Buttar right before this episode. I know I promised to record the conversation but Joe and I had a much more personal and in-depth conversation with Shahid because we decided to keep it personal and recount our discussion to you. Our discussion about nuclear power plants and weapons was not well researched. Shahid was the first real challenger to Nancy Pelosi's congressional seat in the 12th district of California in 2020. His campaign managed to win the districts wild-card primary (top 2 vote getters move on to general election regardless of party) by beating the republican in the primary race Shahid demonstrated that there is a real appetite for progressive policies like Medicare for All and a 15$ minimum wage but not enough to wake up the moderates that have been bought by the democratic machine. If your interest in exploring the dysfunction around Shahid's first campaign just google "Shahid Buttar campaign manager" and the defamatory medium piece will show up. It's our belief that the charges brought against Shahid by his former staffers were overblown and potentially fabricated because Nancy was threatened by Shahid, essentially telling his staff that they would never be able to work in democratic politics again if they didn't quit the campaign and public drag Shahid's reputation through the mud right after winning the primary. Our conversation with Mel was fun and laid back as usual. We cover racism in schools, and children's natural propensity to segregate. The Japanese aren't letting athletes support BLM at the Olympics. The NBA's playin format is pretty cool, and much much more. Jake Paul has gotta stop takin people stuff. Onlyfans is outta control. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/americandualism/message

Shahid Buttar is running to represent California's 12th congressional district. He is challenging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has not faced a Democratic opponent in 30 years. In March, Buttar came in second in California's nonpartisan blanket primary, winning himself a place on the ballot in November. A graduate of Stanford Law School, Buttar built a national progressive legal network at the American Constitution Society to help correct the conservative bias in federal courts. He also worked for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, advocating digital rights for policy issues such as mass surveillance and encryption. Buttar endorses a Green New Deal, Medicare-for-All, guaranteeing housing to all Americans, and overhauling the military-industrial complex. Last week, we interviewed Buttar to discuss how the pandemic has affected his insurgent campaign and why he believes a change of leadership is required to combat America's socio-economic crises. openDemocracy is a small non-profit journalism outfit, not funded by dark money or lucrative sponsorship, so we depend on regular donations from our listeners.
