This episode was unplanned, but when Barbara Ehrenreich died on September 1, 2022, we felt an urge to honor her memory and the profound influence she has had on the American left, socialism, feminism, and our collective thinking about class struggle. From her work in the women's health movement of the 1960s, to her theorizing (with  ex-husband John Ehrenreich) of the "professional-managerial class" in the 1970s, to her explorations of Reagan-era yuppie pathologies, and her renowned exposé of low-wage work in 2001's Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich has been an essential and nuanced guide to the inner-life of American class conflict in the latter half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. To undertake this journey through an extraordinary body of work, we're joined by two brilliant writers who have both — in their own way — taken up  Ehrenreich's profound ethical and intellectual challenge: Alex Press, staff writer at Jacobin magazine (and KYE's favorite labor journalist); and returning guest Gabe Winant, University of Chicago historian and author of The Next Shift: The Fall of Industry and the Rise of Health Care.As Gabe writes in his stunning obituary last week, "Ehrenreich's specialty was to reveal her readers to themselves by showing them the other. Her humor and projection of personal vulnerability were particularly deft techniques for asking the reader to see their own position, often through identification with Ehrenreich: she invites this, beckoning you to follow her into her subject, and then suddenly wheels around on you—and you are caught out." We hope this episode can manage something of that technique for the listener, that you might find yourself "caught out" too, thinking deeply about where you fit into the story Barbara is telling — and what it might call on you to do, fight for, or think harder about. Enjoy.  Further Reading: Barbara & John Ehrenreich, "The Professional-Managerial Class," Radical America, March 1977. — "The New Left and the Professional Managerial Class," Radical America, May 1977.— "Death of a Yuppie Dream," Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, Feb 2013. Barbara Ehrenreich & Deirdre English, Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers, The Feminist Press, 1973.Barbara Ehrenreich, Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class, Pantheon, 1989. Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, Metropolitan, 2001. Barbara Ehrenreich, "Preface to Klaus Theweleit's Male Fantasies Volume 1: Women, Floods, Bodies, History," U of Minnesota Press, 1987. Gabriel Winant, "On Barbara Ehrenreich," n+1, Sept 9, 2022. — "Professional-Managerial Chasm," n+1, Oct 10, 2019. — "The Right Kind of Worker," Know Your Enemy, May 2022. Alex Press, "On the Origins of the Professional-Managerial Class: An Interview with Barbara Ehrenreich." In Nickel and Dimed, author Barbara Ehrenreich lives the life of a low-wage worker and explores how unsustainable poverty is, as well as how easy it can be for one to get stuck in a vicious cycle. In this conversation with John Ydstie from 2001, Ehrenreich, who died earlier this month, discusses the symptoms of a profit-driven society and the issues that echo those today.

Hello from three time zones! This week, Tammy is joined by Debt Collective organizers Ann Larson and Eleni Schirmer to reflect on the movement that won historic relief from student debt. But first, we remember the great Barbara Ehrenreich, who passed last week. Ehrenreich was an author and activist best known for her bestselling book Nickel and Dimed, a hard-hitting yet beautifully written dive into the low-wage economy. She also made incredible contributions to leftist movements, from DSA to domestic workers, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project and In These Times, as well as her often-misunderstood warning about the “professional–managerial class.” And Ann reminds us that Ehrenreich wrote about more than just labor! In our main segment, we celebrate and dissect a rare victory on the left. Ann and Eleni talk about their personal journeys toward calling b******t on all kinds of debt—and trace Biden's recent debt-cancellation announcement to its Occupy Wall Street origins and a decade of painstaking organizing. We reflect on the path forged by the Corinthian debt strikers, the public sector's broader reliance on debt, the “proof of concept” in Biden's nowhere-near-enough cancellation policy, and the way that framing debt as a shared economic condition opens up new organizing opportunities. (A real-life case study in solidarity on the basis of class!) Plus: how all of us can get involved to make the debt announcement a reality. Thanks for listening. oday I talked to Rabbi Wayne Allen about his book Thinking about Good and Evil: Jewish Views from Antiquity to Modernity (U Nebraska Press, 2021). Starting with the Bible and Apocrypha, Rabbi Allen takes us through the Talmud; medieval Jewish philosophers and Jewish mystical sources; the Ba'al Shem Tov and his disciples; early modern thinkers such as Spinoza, Mendelssohn, and Luzzatto; and, finally, modern thinkers such as Cohen, Buber, Kaplan, and Plaskow. Each chapter analyzes individual thinkers' arguments and synthesizes their collective ideas on the nature of good and evil and questions of justice. Allen also exposes vastly divergent Jewish thinking about the Holocaust: traditionalist (e.g., Ehrenreich), revisionist (e.g., Rubenstein, Jonas), and deflective (e.g., Soloveitchik, Wiesel). Rabbi Allen's engaging, accessible volume illuminates well-known, obscure, and novel Jewish solutions to the problem of good and evil. Matthew Miller is a graduate of Yeshivat Yesodei HaTorah.

Tony digs into why all the most successful camera companies, including Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, and Fujifilm, are Japanese. SPONSOR: Go to http://squarespace.com/chelsea & save 10% off your first website or domain with code “chelsea”  The answer is complex, with 4 major turning points: 1) In the 1940s, WWII's divided occupation of Germany set it back, while the United States' occupation of Japan seems to have helped the Japanese camera companies 2) In the 1950s, the Korean war brought many photojournalists to the US-occupied Japan, and David Douglas Duncan, in particular, had great success with Japanese lenses on their Leica cameras. In the US, Joe Erinreich promoted Nikon heavily. 3) In the 1990s and 2000s, US digital camera companies (such as Kodak and Polaroid) failed to transition to the digital era. 4) In the 2010s, the transition from conventional cameras to smartphones saw non-Japanese camera companies (such as Samsung) exit the market. Japanese camera companies didn't have the freedom to easily exit the industry because of the legal challenges around layoffs.   Perhaps no term has caught the imagination of political circles on both the right and the left as the term “Professional Managerial Class” (PMC). The term was first coined by John and Barbara Ehrenreich to describe a caste of middle-class professional elites who increasingly controlled production through their specialist training and educational credentials. While the work of the Ehrenreich's was certainly significant, their hypothesis was not an entirely new one. In the 1940s, the Trotskyist-turn-conservative James Burnham penned the “Managerial Revolution” which hypothesized that society was increasingly falling under the domination of a managerial elite with specialist knowledge.   In recent times, especially in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis and the 2020 COVID pandemic, such analysis and criticism has gain popularity on both the right and left. However, how useful is the term PMC? Are the PMC a coherent social class? And in what ways does the convergence of discourse between both right and left on the “PMC thesis” obfuscate more than it elucidates?   About Ben Burgis: Ben Burgis is a philosophy professor and the author of Give Them An Argument: Logic for the Left. Hello, you wonderful witches and lovely listeners. Let's start with a content warning right off the top with this one: in the latter half of this episode, we discuss horrific violence against innocent people in myriad forms. Because the Witch Hunts of the Early Modern Period in Europe culminated in just that - the unthinkable torture and death of innocent humans, mostly women, for merely existing. Reed is back to continue the saga of examination of all that led to and resulted from these 200 plus years of hysteria and misogyny in the form of witch-hunting and trials. We get into the Malleus Maleficarum ('The Hammer of the Witch') - a text that instructed the public and clergy on how to discover, torture, and destroy 'witches' - and consider what seeds of misogyny in the Bible may have sown these thoughts and words. I still cannot believe I didn't learn about any of this in school. Episode Resources: Chauhan, R. S. (2005). T., Ruhwedel, T., Sadowski, B., Rizzoli, S., Werner, H. B., Ehrenreich, H., Nave, K.-A., Möbius, W. Abstract: Myelin, the electrically insulating axonal sheath, is composed of lipids and proteins with exceptionally long lifetime. This raises the question how myelin function is affected by myelin turnover. We have studied the integrity of myelinated tracts after experimentally preventing the formation of new myelin in the CNS of adult mice, using an inducible Mbp null allele. Oligodendrocytes survived recombination, continued expressing myelin genes, but failed to maintain compacted myelin sheaths. Using 3D electron microscopy and mass spectrometry imaging we visualized myelin-like membranes that failed to incorporate adaxonally, most prominently at juxta-paranodes. Myelinoid body formation indicated degradation of existing myelin at the abaxonal side and at the inner tongue of the sheath. Compacted myelin thinning and shortening of internodes, with about 50% myelin lost after 20 weeks (=5 months), ultimately led to axonal pathology and neurological disease. These data reveal that functional axon-myelin units require the continuous incorporation of new myelin membranes. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

National Magazine Award winner and The Nation columnist Ben Ehrenreich layers climate science, mythologies, nature writing, and personal experiences into a stunning reckoning with our current moment and with the literal and figurative end of time. Desert Notebooks examines how the unprecedented pace of destruction to our environment and an increasingly unstable geopolitical landscape have led us to the brink of a calamity greater than any humankind has confronted before. As inhabitants of the Anthropocene, what might some of our own histories tell us about how to confront apocalypse? And how might the geologies and ecologies of desert spaces inform how we see and act toward time—the pasts we have erased and paved over, this anxious present, the future we have no choice but to build? Ehrenreich draws on the stark grandeur of the desert to ask how we might reckon with the uncertainty that surrounds us and fight off the crises that have already begun. In the canyons and oases of the Mojave and in Las Vegas’s neon apocalypse, Ehrenreich finds beauty, and even hope, surging up in the most unlikely places, from the most barren rocks, and the apparent emptiness of the sky. Desert Notebooks is a vital and necessary chronicle of our past and our present—unflinching, urgent—and yet timeless and profound. Ehrenreich is in conversation with Anthony McCann, author of four collections of poetry. _______________________________________________   Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski   Theme: "I Love All My Friends," a new, unreleased demo by Fragile Gang.   Visit https://www.skylightbooks.com/event for future offerings from the Skylight Books Events team.

They choose a popular streamer, one that would attract a sizable audience and have sponsors capable of providing giveaways. Then they register a Twitch account with a name that is as close to theirs as you can possibly claim. Next, they copy their avatar, details from their profile page, and then download footage of one of their streams using a program like Twitch Leecher. They then create an overlay that says you can get free prizes, typically skins, as part of one of their sponsors' giveaways and that you just follow the link to an external site. The article is interesting because it goes on to bash detractors on both sides, making fun of corporate shills who will defend twitch for doing nothing  and also trashing “reddit edgelords” for defending the attempts saying if you are too stupid to realize you are being scammed too bad. That is, until new rumors rumbled to life earlier this month, suggesting Disney was planning a secret Solo revival.
