    Political Podcast Tijuana Journalism

San Diego Political Podcast BowlersDesk.com 4-15-14: Tijuana Tuesday | Political Podcast with Vicente Calderon from TijuanaPress.com Tijuana is the elephant in the room for San Diego news. Tijuana is an ignored city in San Diego news circles. Only stories that are sensational make even the back pages here in the states. And they almost always seem to be about violence. I don’t think it because of a systemic racism. No it’s just about the dollars. The rating companies don’t give San Diego media the viewer numbers for their news product in Tijuana. So there is no way to monetize covering news just across the boarder. If the Nielsen rating company would give Tijuana number with San Diego numbers I’m sure we’d cover the city and people of Tijuana a lot more in San Diego. However what that has done is opened the door to smaller news producers like the one i talked to for this BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast. Journalist Vicente Calderon and I have known each other for years. He was an anchor in Los Angeles and left that to start a Tijuana based news website TijuanaPress.com He and his team follow all the top stories in Tijuana. He is also the go-to-guy for Tijuana news. He often field produces for American and other international media when they need someone. He’s covered all of what we think about as stereotypical Tijuana stories … prison riots, drug murders and cartel battles. However he and his team cover the stories that don’t get coverage in American media like political debates and even the odd art opening. We talk about media freedom and making a living as a journalist in Tijuana. In the middle of the interview small drone started flying over our heads, file that under weird. But it shows how similar our two countries approaches to gathering news are. I know the TV station I work is defiantly looking at using a drone to gather news, not using it yet but I’m sure its coming. I think this is a fascinating podcast and I hope you enjoy it. BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with Brad Kierkegaard, religious studies professor from San Diego State University. And no he’s not a relation of the famous 19th century philosopher. We talked about the Pope. The Pope is making waves inside and outside the church. His views on what the Catholic Church should be focused on. The poor over birth control. His criticisms of global capitalism. He’s even come out in favor of breastfeeding, though we don’t talk about that. I waited as long as I did after Pope Francis came into power because I wanted him to have to time to do stuff before I started to judge him. Brad has some great points about this new Pope. I particularly like his comparison to Pope Emeritus Benedict. We sat in the little chapel behind the alter at Saint Joseph’s, San Diego’s Cathedral. Brad has this great way of couching his criticisms in positivity. It’s a fascinating and interesting chat. BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast Barrio Logan Zoned Out

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2013 48:52

I asked myself what San Diego political issue is both under talked about and very important to the mayor’s race? The answer for me is Barrio Logan zoning regulations. Now before you yawn think about this … While at first blush zoning regulation don’t seem that exciting, these rules determine what you can do with your land, what business are allowed in a community, even how many people are allowed to live in a neighborhood. So zoning has a direct and very important impact on your life. Barrio Logan is a community created when the 5 freeway was built, bisecting Logan Heights. Under much protest and cries the freeway went through. Then the Coronado Bridge was built and sparking loud protests witch eventually lead to the creation of Chicano Park. Now the community there wants to create some industrial free zones. There is a lot of industry in Barrio Logan, lots of heavy industry. The most notable is the maritime industries. They pay a lot in tax, employ lots of people, and are very important to the city outside of the barrio. This issue is making its way into mayoral election politics is some very interesting ways. The issue has a racial component that could be part of the reason the next mayor wins or why his opponent loses. Barrio Logan was born fighting. And the people from there don’t back down, they are used to long fights. This time on the Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast I sat down with Georgette Gomez from the Environmental Health Coalition. She’s a Barrio Logan native. She has a lot of interesting things to say about her almost decade long fight to make changes to the Barrio Logan zoning rules. Agree or not you’ve got to respect her zeal and commitment. The original was blown up by the French equivalent to the CIA. So Greenpeace just built another one. This time it has a very interesting and avant garde design. The ship has a traditional engine, an electric engine, and two sails. However the sails don’t fly from a traditional mast. Green Pease is hopping the new design they’re using will work as a proof of concept showing cargo ship builders that using sails are viable for cargo vessels. It’s a very cool and interesting design defiantly worth a serious look. For this Bowler’s Desk political podcast I met up with Rory Pendergast. Rory is campaigning hard for the underdog in San Diego’s mayoral special election. We sat in the back of David Alvarez's tiny Encanto campaign office ... Lots of kids, community members, and part activist excited to hit the streets and campaign for the dark horse candidate. No one thought his campaign would gain the momentum it has. Last UT San Diego poll has him neck and neck with Nathan Fletcher. Who is going to show up at the polls? Who can rally their people? Will the traditional San Diego Democrat get votes in San Diego? Who is going to show up? How did Alvarez gain so much ground in such a short time? It’s interesting to me because Alvarez was such an underdog and now he’s a contender. Hello and welcome to this special BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast. This week Ric Epps and I tackled the tough issue of gun control. No matter what side of the gun debate you fall on everyone needs to be at the table on this. Both fervent pro gun activists and anti gun activists. We went out to a pro-second amendment rally in east San Diego County. The Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club hosted the rally. They let anyone that wanted to come out and shoot guns, under the supervision of a club member of course. We sat down with California Stage Assemblyman Brian Jones. Brian is a Republican from the 51st assembly district, that’s east San Diego County from Santee out to the Imperial County line. One of the platforms in his campaign was gun ownership. He is a fervent supporter of it. He opposes any gun registration laws and thinks Americans should be able to buy any kind of gun they want. Sam Paredes the Executive Director of Gun Owners of California also joined us. Sam is as fervently pro-gun as the Assemblyman. Now for the sake of full disclosure you need to know I am not what could be called pro-gun. I do not believe that you should be able to buy a 50-caliber car mounted machine gun. However I think there are responsible gun owners’ out there. And like most Americans I fall in the grey space between this issue. Ric and I hope that this is the beginning of a dialog about the issue. Everyone needs to be at the table in a genuine and sincere way on this issue. We just started with the pro-gun people and hope to bring you a Political Podcast with anti-gun activists soon. This is a hot topic and I’m sure you’ll want to hop on your soapbox over it. Welcome to another edition of the BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast. This time Ric Epps and myself recorded the podcast at Old Trolley Barn Park in University Heights. We were joined by San Diego City Councilman Kevin Faulconer. Kevin talked with me early Sunday morning over the phone before the podcast’s recording. Of course San Diego Mayor Bob Filner’s sexual harassment scandal is top of things he wanted to talk about. However, I did get him to touch on a few things that are being overshadowed by the scandal. Along with the Filner fiascos we talked about the Tourism Marketing District, the prevailing wage vote, and a bit of party politics. But he is pushing, in a very polite way, for Filner to resign, along with nearly everyone on the council, Republican or Democrat. As always if you want to hop on your soapbox … you can by hopping on ours … call us at 619-663-4531 No from the Old Trolley Barn Park in University Heights … The BowlersDesk.com Political Podcast with me Matt Bowler and the Political Professor Ric Epps. … And please remember to post, re-post, and share. This time around Ric Epps and I (Matthew Bowler) talked all about the Bob Filner fiascoe. Filner a former Congressman, City Councilman, and current San Diego Mayor is embroiled in the mother of all sex scandals. At the time I wrote this seven women came forward and levied sexual harassment allegations against the powerful Democrat. These woman says Filner grabbed them, groped them, and in some cases aggressively kissed them. One accuser described Filner slobbering all over the side of her face. This scandal has gripped the nation. No the Mayor is entering a two week intensive behavior therapy, sort of a rehab. We talked to Francine Busby the Chairperson of the San Diego County Democratic Party. She gave Ric and I an inside look at the Democratic party. When they knew what they knew. What they say they did when they say they knew. It was a fascinating chat. If you would like to use part of the interview in your broadcasts please credit www.BowlersDesk.com Sorry only KSWB Fox5 is allowed to use any of this content in any form in the San Diego media market. … And please remember to post, re-post, and share. This Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast is in honor of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Often torture is ignored and oversimplified in main stream media It’s hard to talk about torture and sell ads It’s hard to talk about torture without diminishing to topic It’s hard to talk about torture But we’re going to try and do the hard thing … According to Cornell Law School’s web site torture is defined as http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2340 (1) “torture” means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control; (2) “severe mental pain or suffering” means the prolonged mental harm caused by or resulting from— (3) “United States” means the several States of the United States, the District of Columbia, and the commonwealths, territories, and possessions of the United States. I sat down with two experts in the field of torture. First Arturo Jimenez Bicardi a PhD candidate at University of California at Irvine and he’s doing his dissertation on US torture and targeted killings programs since World War II. Also joining me was Suzanne Bacon the Community Relations Manager for Survivors of Torture, International. They are a San Diego based group that helps people that have survived torture heal. Did you know that there are over 11,000 survivors of politically motivated torture living in San Diego? That’s whom Survivors of Torture, International helps. They also give twice monthly tours of their facility, showing anyone interested the good work they do. Go to the web site www.notorture.org. Give money. Give time. Take the tour. This time to record Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast Ric Epps and I met up over at Roucco Park. It’s a nice park with some very cool modernist/minimalist flair. My only criticism is that the park doesn’t have any shade. While the park was named for a local Architect Lloyd Ruocco. The park is designed to honor Ruocco’s minimalist and modernist style. However it is in desperate need of shade. There are benches that no one sits in unless they want to fry in San Diego’s famous sunshine. Let’s be honest so many parks around San Diego don’t have any shade. That’s bad and seems to be something that many out of town designers forget. While the sun is great we need shade. OK now that’s off my chest. For the podcast Ric and I talked about: How Mayor Filner faced his third veto override in a row. The Tourism Marketing District. Here’s that picture for my idea for the new San Diego ad campaign. Why being aware of local politics is super important. We talked about Republican Carl DeMaio announcing his run for Congress against Democrat Scott Peters. Even though Peters has only been in office 5 months. What kind of affect could an openly gay Congressman from San Diego have on the Republican Party? Nationally? The European Union approved shipping arms to the Syrian opposition. Russia and China are arming and supporting the Assad regime. Is Syria a proxy war for the United States and Europe vs China and Russia? What do the protest in Turkey tell us?
