Kristen Ghodsee reads the fourth section of Alexandra Kollontai's 1915 essay about World War I–"Who Needs the War?"–and looks for lessons applicable to the present day. This translation is from a 1984 collection of Kollontai's writing published by Progress Publishers in the Soviet Union, which claims that the essay was written while Kollontai was in exile in Norway. She sent it to Vladimir Lenin (then in exile in Switzerland) who also edited it before publication. The final pamphlet was first published in 1916. It went into multiple editions and was distributed widely across Europe and Russia.Mentioned in this episode:"How to do escapism in the Trump era," The New Republic"The Other Great Depression," Le Monde Diplomatique in English, French, Spanish, Farsi, Bulgarian, and EsperantoAnachoresis - withdrawal into the desertSend us a textThanks so much for listening. In recent EU parliamentary elections, Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party won 31.4% of the vote, while the coalition representing President Emmanuel Macron's Renaissance party garnered an embarrassing 14%. Renaud Lambert, journalist at Le Monde Diplomatique, contextualizes the rise of the far-right, and how President Macron's decision to call snap legislative elections on June 30 and July 7 has prompted the left to form the New Popular Front, an unlikely coalition of four left-wing parties. Will this left alliance garner enough support to torpedo a far-right victory in the French parliament?

Bogi Ágústsson ræddi við hann um þingkosningar sem hefjast á Indlandi í næstu viku og standa fram í maí. Jón Ormur segir það mikið verk að halda kosningar þar sem milljarður manna er á kjörskrá. Lítill vafi leikur á að Narendra Modi forsætisráðherra og flokkur hans BJP vinni sigur í kosningunum. Modi hefur á tíu ára valdatíð sinni þrengt mjög að dómstólum og fjölmiðlum, komið stuðningsmönnum sínum fyrir í lykilembættum og ofsótt pólitíska andstæðinga. Er svo komið að margir efast um að hægt sé að telja Indland lengur í hópi lýðræðisríkja. Þannig spyr franska tímaritið Le Monde Diplomatique á forsíðu aprílheftisins hvort Indland sé nú aðeins lýðræðisríki að nafninu til.

What explains Germany's steadfast support for Israel? Even as Israel's response to the October 7th Hamas attacks has drawn increasing international condemnation, Germany has doubled down on support, proclaiming that Israel's security is its Staatsräson and cracking down on speech deemed insufficiently supportive of Israel. To answer this question from a historical perspective, Ted speaks with Daniel Marwecki, a lecturer at Hong Kong University, about his book Germany and Israel: Whitewashing and Statebuilding. He argues that German support for Israel did not always stem from guilt and the need to atone for historical crimes, but instead from clear-eyed Realpolitik. Escuchar audio

Hindutva is theocratic Hindu nationalism. It is a powerful force in what is now the world's most populous country. Narendra Modi, India's prime minister, is a lifelong member of the RSS, an openly Hindu supremacist organization. Le Monde Diplomatique reports: Hindutva “followers regard India as a Hindu country. Non-Hindus are at best guests, at worst invaders, and must be identified, watched, deprived of certain rights, and in some cases expelled or even eliminated. The main victims of Hindutva are India's large Muslim minority. Hindutva adherents oppose mixed Hindu-Muslim marriages, calling them a ‘love jihad' that aims to convert Hindu women so that their offspring will be raised as Muslims. This paranoid fantasy has encouraged violence and widespread denigration of Indian Muslims.” Recorded at the Swedish Academy at the Thought and Truth Under Pressure conference.

ABOUT BENJAMIN CUNNINGHAM AND THE LIARThe Cold War meets Mad Men in the form of Karel Koecher, a double agent whose shifting loyalties and over-the-top hedonism reverberated from New York to Moscow. In the mid-1970s, the CIA and KGB watched Karel Koecher closely-they were both convinced he was working for the enemy. And they were both right. Traveling with his wife, Hana, Koecher posed as a Czechoslovak asylum seeker and arrived in the US as a Communist sleeper agent. After parlaying a doctorate from Columbia into a job at the CIA, Koecher proceeded to operate as a double agent at the height of the Cold War.Shunning a low profile, the Koechers embraced Manhattan's high life-with cocaine, swinging, and parties emblematic of the times and their penchant for risk. Hana, who was no more than a shy teenager when she arrived, grew into a sophisticated international diamond dealer who relayed messages to Karel's handlers. Riding a wave of euphoria, the Koechers felt unstoppable. But it was too good to last.Using newly declassified documents, interrogation tapes, and extraordinary firsthand accounts from the Koechers themselves, Cunningham reconstructs their double lives and the fading Cold War, where a strange moral fog made it hard to know what truth was being fought for, and to what end.Trailer for The Liarhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-Um1o1lCgkBENJAMIN CUNNINGHAM BIOBenjamin Cunningham is a journalist, writer and PhD candidate at the Universitat de Barcelona.
