This week I sit down with Adam Goldin, Head of UK at CC Land, the Hong Kong-listed real estate powerhouse. Adam oversees some of London's most iconic real estate, including the Leadenhall Building (famously known as the Cheesegrater) and the Whiteley. Adam brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles, including Head of UK Investment at Resolution Property and eight years at Delancey, where he played a key role in transforming projects like East Village and the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre redevelopment. I sat down with Adam to discuss a broad range of subjects which covered some of the following topics: * Early Career Foundations – The pivotal experiences and key lessons that shaped his journey in real estate. * Transitioning from Advisor to Principal – Overcoming the challenges of shifting from advisory roles to principal investment positions. * The Whiteley Redevelopment – Insights into one of London's most iconic building transformations. * Leadenhall Building (Cheesegrater) – managing customer relationships and improving the rental profile of this landmark London skyscraper. * Gut Feel vs. Spreadsheet – The balance between intuition and data-driven decisions in real estate investments. * Leveraging Social Media – Harnessing the power of digital platforms to build brand awareness and engage stakeholders. * Embracing Opportunism – Identifying and capitalising on real estate & career opportunities   Oh and one last question - who are the People, what Property, and in which Place Adam would invest should he have £500m of capital at his disposal. The entire 38th floor of the City's ‘Cheesegrater' skyscraper is set to be turned into an escape room game for stressed office workers to blow off steam. The building's owner, CC Land, says the idea is for co-workers to better collaborate and “have fun” together as they compete to win Crystal Maze-style tasks. Meanwhile at 22 Bishopsgate, the Square Mile's newest tower, bosses are offering “puppy yoga” - stretches plus dog cuddles - to try and boost colleagues' serotonin between IRL meetings and crunching spreadsheets. They are among strategies to try and tempt working-from-home staff back to the Covid-era physical office. That's on top of street food stalls, ice cream deliveries, craft classes and massages in what's the Times reports is the “hotelification” of workplaces, or “office 2.0”.It's no longer tech giants bringing high-end freebies to blur the lines between nine to five - now, many of traditional City firms are spending big on renting space with wellbeing extras. But does these techniques actually improve productivity or job satisfaction, and does anyone really want boss-approved good times in a “vertical village”?To find out more about stress-busting ideas being designed into offices of the near future, The Leader's joined by workplace wellbeing consultant Emma James, chief operating officer at Kamwell, an employee wellbeing company. Often considered to be the world’s first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building was completed on 1 March 1885, on the corner of Adams and LaSalle Street in Chicago. At 138 feet (42m) high, it wasn’t the tallest building in Chicago at the time – but its historical significance stems not from its height, but its engineering. Made possible by several technological breakthroughs at the time, the Home Insurance Building differed from traditional construction methods by using a structure made from iron and, more importantly, steel. This gave it a unique architecture and weight-bearing frame. Compared to previous building designs – which had reached a practical height limit to avoid their weight-bearing masonry walls getting too thick and heavy – this new design proved lighter, stronger, and a more practical way to increase height. Though there is debate over whether the Home Insurance Building was “the first skyscraper”, or indeed the first to use a steel frame, a combination of other factors helped it to popularize the idea. It provided a template for the second and third generation skyscrapers surrounding us today; it enabled, over a century later, the myriad of unique city skylines we now see around the world. London’s skyline, in particular, has seen immense change over the centuries. Today, you need only turn your head to see yet another iconic structure towering above you: the “Walkie-Talkie”, “Gherkin”, or “Cheesegrater” for example. But with the number of skyscrapers continuing to grow, how do we future proof them to account for people’s needs decades or centuries into the future? How do we ensure that they complement their surroundings while still encouraging innovation? On what metrics do we define a good or successful structure? We answer these questions in this episode of Create the Future with Roma Agrawal, a structural engineer who spent six years working on one of London’s most recent and distinctive additions: the Shard. We also speak to Roma about her work promoting engineering as a career, why female representation in engineering varies so significantly around the world, and what it was like to be photographed by Annie Leibovitz alongside Emma Thompson and Rita Ora.
