Kia ora e te whānau. Jasmin Paris was rocketed into the wider consciousness when she became the first woman to finish Barkley Marathons, with 99 seconds to spare. Ironically, for a race that eschewed publicity for so long, the photos of Paris sending the final 100 metres or so to the yellow gate are arguably more famous than the Barkley itself.  Whilst this may be Jasmin's best known achievement, it's far from her only one. Spine winner, Bob Graham Round holder, fell running champion, senior lecturer in veterinary science, Mother and partner. Jasmin's life is full. Ali and Matt spoke to Jasmin about all this, and Green Runners, the organisation she co-founded with Damian Hall to advocate for, and address climate issues related to the sport of running and the wider world. In this week's episode, we're absolutely thrilled to be joined by the legendary Jasmin Paris, MBE - a British ultrarunner, fell running champion, and all-around inspiration. Jasmin's achievements are the stuff of legend, from smashing records in some of the world's most grueling races to becoming the first woman ever to complete the Barkley Marathons in 2024.   Jasmin shares her fascinating journey, from growing up in the Peak District and discovering her love of the outdoors to becoming one of the most accomplished ultrarunners of all time.   Jasmin also opens up about life beyond running - balancing her career as a small-animal vet and senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh with being a mother of two. She shares how she manages the challenges of parenting while pursuing an elite athletic career, proving that resilience and passion aren't just reserved for the trails but are woven into every aspect of her life.   And when all is said and done, perhaps the best prize isn't the trophies or the records but… the wooden chopping board. Do our early years inform what kind of decision maker we are and why are some people decisive and others procrastinate? Also our right to vote is a fundamental aspect of freedom and the foundation of a democratic society. Professor Thomas Gift has led extensive studies analysing US politics and America's role in the world, he joins Audrey to discuss what factors affect our decision making and whether we vote differently if we fear our freedom might be compromised. By Davy Crockett New book on Barkley history The Barkley Marathons course (thought to be roughly 130 miles and about 63,000 feet of elevation gain) at Frozen Head State Park was the brain child of Gary Cantrell (Lazarus Lake) and Karl Henn (Rawdawg). The idea for the race was inspired upon hearing about the 1977 escape of James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., from nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. The first year of the Barkley was 1986. Prior to 2024, only 17 men had finished the entire rugged course within 60 miles, and no women had ever finished. That would change this year. Let's let Jared Beasley tell the story in his article: Barkley 2024: A Bit Traumatic and Wonderful in Ultrarunning Magazine. Subscribe or renew your subscription to Ultrarunning Magazine with a 25% discount which support Ultrarunning History. Use this form. The Barkley 2024 was predictable: after three finishers last year, no one was expected to make it to the fifth loop. The course would be toughened up. But what unfolded was something altogether different and soon we were dealing with a rash of firsts, tattoos, a Rusty Spoon, a photo gone round the world and an Italian painting from 1603. By 4 a.m. on Friday morning, almost 48 hours after the race began, Jasmin Paris was sitting in a camping chair in a small pool of light near a metal gate attached to a stone pillar. This gate has come to embody the most challenging test in ultrarunning. It's a test that Paris has been battling for years. Items litter the ground in front of her: an empty Coke bottle, a half-full Coke bottle, a gallon of Minute Maid and a pint of oat milk.
