One visit down the highway is enough to convince Damo the Cats will be thereabouts at the pointy end of the season once again in 2025. The addition of Bailey Smith to the Cats squad, plus a fully fit Sam De Koning and Max Holmes, there's no reason Geelong can't be a serious contender again under Chris Scott. Martha Kearney visits Whitstable to discover the fascinating and mysterious story behind Guy Maunsell's sea forts at Shivering Sands. Built in the second world war as air defences, these towers can still be seen from the shoreline, although they are now in a state of disrepair. Martha discovers their incredible and strange history. Once home to up to 265 soldiers, these huge metal boxes on stilts later became the base for a broadcasting revolution. In the 1960s, pirate stations such as Radio City, Invicta and the short-lived Radio Sutch (run by the musician and parliamentary candidate Screaming Lord Sutch), broadcast from the sea forts to huge audiences who wanted to hear the latest pop and rock records.Tom Edwards and Bob Leroi are two of the DJs with fond memories of their time aboard the sea forts at Shivering Sands, but there is also a darker history. David Featherbe's father was lost at sea after visiting the Red Sands fort and foul play was suspected. These mysteries and the forts imposing physical architecture fascinate historian Flo McEwan and many artists such as Stephen Turner and Sue Carfrae. Today the forts lie empty and are slowly being lost to the sea, but they remain a source of inspiration to artists and photographers, as Martha discovers.Produced by Helen Lennard

Susannah Begbie grew up in rural New South Wales on a sheep farm and is now a GP who has worked all over Australia. She is the winner of Hachette's Richell Prize for 2022. The Deed is her first novel. Tom Edwards has spent most of his life running the farm by himself. He's not well pleased that his kids never came back to take their place on the land as he wanted. Tom's also dying and so he's come up with a plan. His kids will return to the farm and build him a coffin, in four days no less. They build him a coffin and they'll do it right, or he'll disinherit the lot of them. Jenny is the first back to Ellersly. She never really left the area and is the one to find Tom's body. Christine is reliably prompt, Dave hurries because as the only son he thinks he's getting it all and Sophie gets there, as she always does in her own time. The conditions on Tom's will at first puzzle then infuriate the siblings. Worse, the local lawyer stands to benefit from their disorganization and works to sow confusion in the ranks. The Deed is a tremendous family drama that variously shocks, delights and intrigues the reader with the machinations of the town of Coorong. The novel is told from the varying and contradictory points of view of the four Edwards siblings and their father Tom. Tom's view is hard bitten and uncompromising. He feels he never got any favours and so he's not about to start handing them out himself. As we flit between each of the children we see what this has meant through their lives. Jenny as eldest feels almost invisible and just wants someone who can see her for herself. Dave's role as the only son ultimately drove him away from the pressure. Christine feels noone ever appreciated her work keeping everything together, a role she's continued in her own family. And Sophie as youngest always tried to keep Tom smiling and perhaps never learned that she could be serious. The interplay of the siblings and the obvious tension arising from the reading of the will lights the fuse that plays out in a kind of battle between allies. As readers we are poised to choose sides but ultimately root for the four to come together and overcome. It's an interesting tension and hard to escape that for many people managing wealth transfer following the death of a parent is a macabre journey into bitterness and avarice. The conceit of building the coffin is brilliantly set to allow us to discover something of the landscape around Ellersly. For mine I had no idea about how this might be achieved and still imagine a rough hewn box not unlike the pencil boxes we all made at school writ large. The journey itself is set up to trouble the power dynamics and drive forward the characters. The Deed is a strange journey that is carried by the strength of its characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing and energy of the narrative opening up parts of greater Australian life outside of my day to day. Loved this review? Steve and Bryan Co-founder of Old Caz Beer Bryan Rengel joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras in the studio on Brew Ha Ha today. Bryan was on Brew Ha Ha last August on this episode, and his partner Tom Edwards was a guest on this other episode from March 31, 2022. The first beer tasted today is called Chismosa Clara, their take on a Mexican Lager. There is an amber ale version. This is a lighter one, made to be like Modelo Especial. They are located in Rohnert Park which is growing and gaining popularity. A hazy IPA is the next tasting, called Early Sunset. It's an example of a creative process of starting with a special recipe that they make in kegs only, to see if it becomes popular. If it does, they will make a label and produce it. This is how they select which beers to produce more of. Old Caz is opening a new location in SOCO Village, right in the middle of the square. It is under construction now and their goal is to use the old taproom only for special events and to move the public tasting to the new place. They have a specially designed concrete pad for heavy food trucks to park. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and in Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Herlinda Heras is calling in from Maui. She is sitting at Maui Brewing Company, looking at the ocean. She is there for her birthday and to see breweries that are participating in the Kokua relief beer project. The Kokua Project Kokua is an independently owned restaurant and brewery. The Kokua project is a fund raiser for victims of the Lahaina fire last August. On the other side of the island from where the fires happened, it is still quite beautiful. Bryan Rengel, co-founder of Old Caz Beer, joins Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras in the studio today on Brew Ha Ha. Co-founder Tom Edwards was on California Wine Country on this episode on March 31, 2022. Also in this show we will hear from Herlinda Heras who is just back from a lightning trip to Liverpool, England last weekend. Old Caz celebrated an anniversary last weekend. They shut the parking lot down on Saturday and had a standing room only party. Old Caz Beer is named after Old Cazadero Road. They are actually located in Rhonert Park. He and his partner met at Sonoma State on the rowing team. They were also into cycling and wanted to name a brewery after a road in west Sonoma County. They settled on Old Cazadero Road, because he describes it as a "six-mile death climb" with all kinds of exposure to sun and shade. It has all of west county in one beautiful six-mile hill. From Scuba to Beer After college Bryan worked as an underwater welder in the Gulf of Mexico, later in Africa and then in Alaska. He was the captain of a gold dredging boat in Alaska named the Midas, which is the name of their blonde beer today. After his second summer in Alaska, his friend Tom was working at Bear Republic and they decided to start a brewery together then. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. They have been in business for five years and have had the taproom for four years. "It's been a hell of a ride," says Bryan. Their taproom is open every day of the week, weekdays 3-9, Saturdays noon - 10 and Sunday noon - 7. They have food trucks almost every day. Their goal is to have them seven days a week. Old Caz makes a lot of different varieties and Bryan says they make a beer for everyone. It's a long list. There is one called Orange Crush, an Imperial Kettle Sour. It is an 8% beer that tastes like a mimosa. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. They taste their Bukovany Pivo, a Czech Pilsner. It just won Gold at the US Open. It is a crisp, clean refreshing Pilsner. Bryan says, "We only make crushable beer." It's another term they made up for a good beer that you will want a second and a third of. Herlinda in Liverpool Herlinda has arrived from SFO just today, having returned from England. She had to go to Liverpool for a chance to interview Frieda, the former manager of the Beatles' fan club. She met Pete Best when he played in Sonoma County. He has opened a Beatles Museum in Liverpool and Herlinda made their acquaintance. She hardly did any interviews at the time. She also got a chance to meet other people associated with the band. Herlinda describes a kind of present-day Beatlemania she experienced during the trip. "I'm kind of tired, actually," says Herlinda, without a hint of irony. She also saw Burning Man from the sky flying in. We don't do things normal, we do things 'extra credit.' - Bryan Rengel, Old Caz Beer Bryan describes how Old Caz got a lot of free equipment from Craigslist. His partner Tom also tells that story on his CWC interview back in March, 2022. His new space in SOMA Village is under construction and they hope it is all ready by the end of the year.

A team of four students at Christchurch's St Andrew's College have won an international mathematics award for their work modelling the most time-effective way for passengers to board and disembark a plane. The four year 13 students; Toby Harvie, Luke Zhu, Corin Simcock, and Tom Edwards were one of three teams in the world to get an Outstanding Team award at the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge. The team spent five days simulating different boarding and disembarking methods, taking into account variables like people with carry-on luggage and groups boarding together. They found the fastest method for a narrow-body aircraft was for window seats to board first, followed by middle seats and then aisle seats, and for a wide-body aircraft, the fastest boarding was by section - from back to front. Kathryn speaks to one of the students; Toby Harvie, and Phil Adams, the teacher in charge of digital technologies and mathematics at St Andrew's College.

On the day of the event, there are nationally ranked judges who come in, including Herlinda Heras. Herlinda Heras actually ran the vaccine clinic in the same building. It's a nice big space. Tom Edwards tells the story of Old Caz and how he became a brewmaster. He got into brewing through his uncle 10 years ago. He was home brewing with friends and Tom tasted a sample and it was “legitimately good and blew my mind.” After that, he wanted to dive in and learn all he could. He got into home brewing, went to the Beverage People and “went farther and farther down the rabbit hole.” Many home brewers wonder if it is possible to make a go at it and become a business. He realized he needed to know about commercial brewing and operations. So you either need a brewing degree or work experience, to emerge with the knowledge and practice. He didn't want to go back to school and he sent 100 applications. He worked briefly for Budweiser and learned about how the high volume productions work. But he was also accepted by Bear Republic and that is where learned as they expanded. He started in 2012 and was happy to to unglorious work to learn the craft. Speaking of scrubbing tanks, “it was magical, it was awesome.” He made it up to brewer. Now his company has bought equipment from Bear. He started his own brewery with a partner in 2018 and has been on a “total grind” since then. They have a Hazy IPA called Free Craigs which celebrates getting free stuff off Craigslist. They got multiple cold boxes, their grain mill, at least $300,000 worth of free stuff that works! He brought the beers that they will be pouring at Battle of the Brews. The beer is their Midas Blonde. The 20/30 Club provides school supplies to young children in need and Old Caz is one of the breweries that is contributing to it. They also taste the Lavender Radler which has a great story from a friend who made lavender lemonade and they managed to make it blend with a beer. Harry Duke declares that it is one of the most unique flavors he has ever tasted. It tastes more of lemon and sour than lavender, which some people might associate with soap. “It's fascinating. I did not expect that,” says Harry. It's only 4.4% ABV, so very light.
