Through her “archaeology of the future” design approach, the Lebanese-born, Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh has firmly established herself as a humanist who brings a profound awareness of past, present, and presence to all that she does. In the two decades since winning her breakthrough commission—the Estonian National Museum in Tartu—her practice has taken off, with Ghotmeh swiftly becoming one today's fastest-rising architectural stars. Just a week after we recorded this episode of Time Sensitive, she was named the winner of a competition to design the British Museum's Western Range and, shortly after that, she was announced as the architect of the new Qatar Pavilion in the historic Giardini of Venice; she is also the designer of the Bahrain Pavilion at the just-opened 2025 Osaka Expo. Across her high-touch, high-craft projects, whether a brick-clad Hermès leather-goods workshop in Normandy, France, completed in 2023; the timber-framed 2023 Serpentine Pavilion in London; or the concrete-walled Stone Garden apartment tower (2020) in Beirut, Ghotmeh celebrates the hand.On the episode, Ghotmeh reflects on the long-view, across-time qualities of her work and outlines what she believes is architecture's role in shaping a better world ahead.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Lina Ghotmeh[5:01] “The Shape of Time: Remarks on the History of Things”[5:01] George Kubler[5:01] Trevor Paglen[8:41] “The Long View: Why We Need to Transform How the World Sees Time”[8:41] Tim Ingold[11:15] “Windows of Light”[11:15] “Lecture: Lina Ghotmeh”[12:06] Beatriz Colomina[12:06] “Are We Human?”[19:58] Gaston Bachelard[24:04] Olga de Amaral[24:04] Cartier Foundation[24:04] Juhani Pallasmaa[24:04] “The Eyes of the Skin”[26:39] Luis Barragán[31:09] Stone Garden (2020)[31:09] Hermès Workshops (2023)[36:36] Peter Zumthor[36:36] “Atmospheres”[41:53] Khalil Khouri[44:51] Jean Nouvel[44:51] Norman Foster[44:51] Estonian National Museum (2016)[46:41] Renzo Piano[46:41] Richard Rogers[46:41] Maya Lin[46:41] Dan Dorell[46:41] Tsuyoshi Tane[50:45] “The Poetic, Humanistic Architecture of Lina Ghotmeh”[51:40] Rimbaud Museum[54:48] “Light in Water” (2015)[54:48] The Okura Tokyo[59:22] Les Grands Verres, Palais de Tokyo (2017)[59:44] Zero-Carbon Hotel Concept (2019)[59:42] Serpentine Pavilion (2023)[1:04:11] Osaka Expo Bahrain Pavilion (2025)
From 2023 May 10 to August 7, the Centre Pompidou (or "Beaubourg" for those who know him well ;-) ) is dedicating an exhibition to a major world figure in architecture: Sir Norman Foster, PRITZKER Prize. This world-renowned architect is at the head of one of the world's largest architectural firms, Foster + Partners, which designed, for example, the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, and the Millau Viaduct. His rise has been meteoric. He himself says Architect's of the world (...) don't take yourselves so seriously. In addition to this flagship exhibition, this event is an opportunity for us to question the figure of the architect! We dive into his latest landmark project, The One, poised to redefine the Toronto skyline as Canada's tallest skyscraper at an impressive 85 stories. Sam's journey began at just 16 when he jumped into entrepreneurship and explored various industries before finding his true calling in real estate. He shares his innovative approach to bridging the gap between custom homes and luxury condos, aiming to create not just buildings but unique living experiences. With The One, he's forging a new standard in luxury, treating every unit as a bespoke creation rather than a cookie-cutter product. We discuss his collaboration with renowned architect Norman Foster and how they've designed The One to be an engineering marvel, complete with an eye-catching hybrid exoskeleton that elevates the surrounding community. Sam also emphasizes his commitment to quality craftsmanship, ensuring his projects' elegance and functionality meet seamlessly. Beyond the architecture, Sam's philosophy centers on community impact and philanthropy. In some families, the parents' DNA instructs so clearly the way their children think and work that it's impossible to deny the familial impact. Jason Bruges is the product of just this. His dad was a software and computer engineer, and his mother a trained artist. Both influenced where and how he came to be a multidisciplinary artist and designer. His eponymous Jason Bruges Studio is internationally renowned for creating interactive spaces and surfaces that sit between the world of architecture, site specific installation art and interaction design. Considered a pioneer of this hybrid in-between space, Jason has subsequently paved the way for a new genre of design studios, artists and designer-makers. After graduating from Oxford Brookes University in London, Jason borrowed £1,000 from his dad for an airline ticket and flew to Hong Kong to meet his grandfather at the airport. He'd only met him a handful of times before. Within weeks he had a job offer from the famed architect Norman Foster. This later led to his role at the groundbreaking brand experience agency, Imagination back in London, where his work on the Millenium Dome was considered an early example of interaction design. It was soon after, in 2002, that Jason created his own studio. Listen in as Vince and Jason discuss how being noticed by Tom Dixon helped him start his studio, the influence of Jean Nouvel's animated façades, and designing a hotel lobby in 2002 that changed colour based on the clothes of guests passing through. https://www.jasonbruges.com/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Here at the Country Life Podcast, we like to think we deliver a useful and necessary service. We want to discuss the important issues. We want to talk to Norman Foster about why architecture matters. We want to speak to farmers about how they can help tackle the climate crisis. We strive to compress the beauty of nature into an audio format so we can learn to cherish and appreciate the world around us.Sometimes, however, we have to ask important questions such as: ‘How can you sneak onto a yacht party at the Monaco Grand Prix?'. Thankfully, we know just such an expert. Adam Hay Nicholls has spent decades travelling the world, driving fast cars, reviewing fancy hotels and writing about Formula One. His answer? Confidence, good socks, and knowing the name of the owner of said yacht. Either that, or pretend you're from pest control. Even fancy yachts have rats, apparently. To complement this week's Horsepower Issue, Adam joined me for a chat about all things cars, travel and F1. What are some of his favourite cars that he's driven? What's it like owning a vintage Bentley? Why was he at the opening of a hotel in Dubai with Beyonce? Why is he currently trapped in a log cabin in Northumberland? All very important questions as I'm sure you'd agree. We also spoke at length about his trip around England, Scotland and Wales to complete the Three Peaks challenge. If that doesn't sound very luxurious, don't worry, we sent him off to do it in an Aston Martin. We're not yet sure whether CountryLife.co.uk will be able to hire an ‘Editor of having a jolly good time', but if we do, Adam certainly has the resumé for the role. We think you'll enjoy listening to what he's been up to.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Adam Hay-NichollsProducer and Editor: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When THERESA HARRIS appears on screen, you cannot take your eyes off of her. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS. To jeden z najbardziej wstrząsających utworów w historii muzyki. Norman Foster is unarguably one of the greatest architects of the last half century. We're delighted that he joins Country Life magazine for a very special episode of the podcast. Speaking to Country Life's Carla Passino, Lord Foster describes how he left school in Manchester at 16 before eventually working his way through university in order to forge a career as an architect, a role in which he has reshaped countless cities — not least London. He shares his view on what makes London the city that it is, how it is a city that 'is essentially organic', and how its informality, copious green spaces and thriving neighbourhoods model can help popularise the concept of the 15-minute city across the world, and what he has to say to those who criticise how he, and his imitators, have reshaped the skyline of the British capital. The architect also talks about his other key passion in life: flying. The 89-year-old has flown 75 different types of aircraft, including helicopters and jets. Lord Foster also talks about the work of the Norman Foster Foundation, and how he is trying to help tomorrow's architects to plan and create cities which are as sustainable as they are vibrant and liveable. Norman Foster is the world's principal architect of airports - from Beijing to Mexico City, from Hong Kong to Kuwait, his buildings are remarkable theatres of aviation. Foster's passion for flying extends to him piloting himself around the world. But what is the future of flying and its related infrastructure amid the current climate crisis? Jonathan Glancey considers some options. He reports on the development in Britain of hydrogen/electric engines that may soon power smaller aircraft, how airports can achieve net zero and the part that drones might play in the future of freight transport. And, interestingly, he discovers new thinking about the airport as a hub for all kinds of activity and transport - but where less, not more, flying takes place. Presented by Jonathan Glancey Produced by Susan Marling A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4
Because, between yesterday when the reign of the star architect was rampant and today when everything is smoothed out and values are stupidly annihilated, where are we?Anne-Charlotte DepondtImage teaser © photo by Agata Kadar ; London, UK: details of modern white structure of the British Museum by Foster + Partners architectsSound engineering : Julien Rebours___If you like the podcast do not hesitate:. to subscribe so you don't miss the next episodes,. to leave us stars and a comment :-),. to follow us on Instagram @comdarchipodcast to find beautiful images, always chosen with care, so as to enrich your view on the subject.Nice week to all of you ! Summer Islam is a founding director of Material Cultures, a not-for-profit organisation that in its own words ‘challenges the systems, technologies, processes, supply chains, regulations and materials that make up the construction industry with the aim of transforming the way we build'.Currently, Summer has an installation in London's Building Centre, along with her partners, Paloma Gormley and George Massoud. Homegrown: Building a Post-Carbon Future is notable for the large straw and timber structure at its heart. The trio has also published a new pocket-sized book, Material Reform, that attempts to set out the way we should build in the future, examining the ‘technification' of architecture, our reliance on extractive processes, and investigating how we should build with biomaterials. It's a fascinating, far reaching, read. In this episode we talk about: the philosophy behind Material Cultures; the problems with the construction industry and why it needs to change; being a ‘reformist' rather than a ‘revolutionary'; disagreeing with Norman Foster on concrete; how biomaterials can simplify the way we build; factories as places of experimentation; the importance of repair; architects' ‘arrogant' use of timber; why straw is vital to our future; and putting Material Cultures' ideas into practice. In this episode I fact check the article "There are a lot of dangerous myths" about sustainability says Norman Foster, which appeared on dezeen.com on 17th January 2023. The architect made some controversial statements about sustainability and defended Foster & Partner's decision to keep designing airports and leave Architects Declare. This episode is in no way an attack on the fine people who work at Foster & Partners or the work they do to design sustainable buildings. It is just a fact check of some of the controversial statements made by Foster himself, to help people understand the climate science.Relevant episode for further listening: #21: Jake Attwood-Harris (HawkinsBrown) - Whole Life Carbon, Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofitting for SustainabilityRelevant links and further readinghttps://architizer.com/blog/inspiration/stories/foster-partners-zaha-hadid-architects-quit-architects-declare/#:~:text=Foster %2B Partners and Zaha Hadid, climate action can be policed.https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uks-jet-zero-plan-would-allow-demand-for-flying-to-soar-70/https://ourworldindata.org/co2-emissions-from-aviationhttps://cen.acs.org/environment/pollution/nuclear-waste-pilesscientists-seek-best/98/i12https://www.forbes.com/sites/christinero/2019/11/26/the-staggering-timescales-of-nuclear-waste-disposal/?sh=5ba3bc729cf5https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/fuel-seawater-whats-catch-180953623/#:~:text=Now%2C scientists at the U.S.,plane as proof of concept.https://science.howstuffworks.com/transport/flight/modern/question192.htmThanks for listening!Green Urbanist website Contact Form Substack Twitter Instagram Linkedin

This week we're talking to Britain's most revered architect, Lord Foster, and to the design guru and co-founder of the Design Museum, Stephen Bayley, about their quest to put beauty back at the heart of contemporary building. The registered charity, the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust, which Stephen chairs, staged its first ever Building Beauty Awards on Monday 21st November at the Stirling Prize winning Bloomberg building in the City – which Norman Foster designed. We discuss the winners across four categories: building, engineering, public spaces and little gems, the last designed to cheer residents and bring pride to a built neighbourhood. This is a rare chance to hear two such prominent figures from the world of architecture and design discuss what constitutes beauty in new building today. Building beauty reaps rich award – the winners received £10,000, the joint biggest prize in architecture and a Portland stone rhodium-plated trophy created by the jeweller Theo Fennell – who was also one of the judges. Tune in to find out who the winners of the prize were and to hear about the first Royal Fine Art Commission Trust International Building Beauty Prize at World Architecture Festival in Lisbon next week.
Norman Foster discusses the key cultural influences and experiences that led him to become one of the world's most important living architects. Baron Foster of Thames Bank founded Foster and Partners in 1967, a practise which specialises in urban master-planning, civic, cultural, office and airport developments. His most famous designs include the Great Court of the British Museum, the Reichstag in Berlin, Millau Viaduct in France, the Apple headquarters in California, Wembley Stadium, Beijing Airport, and the London tower known as ‘the Gherkin'. At 87 years old, and still working as executive chairman of his company, Norman Foster looks back to his working class childhood in Manchester when he first became fascinated with the built environment in the post-war years. He recalls taking two books from the local library - on the architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier - which helped focus his early fascination with architecture. After studying at Manchester University's school of architecture, Norman Foster won a scholarship to study at Yale University in Connecticut. It was there he met Richard Rogers, with whom he became firm friends and started taking long road trip across America to seek out landmark buildings. On return to the UK, Foster and Rogers set up their first architectural practise Team Four, along with their wives Wendy Cheeseman and Su Brumwell. Foster tells This Cultural Life about his continuing fascination with the design process, after a five decade career that has seen him win the most prestigious architecture prizes, including the Pritzker, the Praemium Imperiale Award, and the RIBA Gold Medal. Producer: Edwina Pitman

In today's episode, I discuss the topic of sustainability with my guest Lauren Eckhart Smith, the Head of Design at Alagem Capital Group in Beverly Hills, California. I also speak with her about One Beverly Hills, a mixed-use project that includes residential, retail, hotel and both new construction and renovation components. This project, located at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, is a one-of-a-kind building with the most advanced technologies for health and sustainability. Additionally, I discuss with Lauren how this particular 17.5-acre site is one of the largest projects incorporating sustainable design and architecture in California, far beyond the hand-waving that we see in our industry. She also shares with us her experience working with the City of Beverly Hills as well as her experience working on past jobs, such as designing the IAC Headquarters in New York by Frank Gehry, the Bloomberg LP Headquarters in London by Norman Foster. A new wave of sustainable building designs has emerged - and it's nothing compared to what we have seen in the past. Join us on today's episode if you are interested to learn more as we dive into this topic, including Lauren's personal experience working in the industry.
