On this months episode we get to talk with our friends Anthony and Chris Hoisington. We talk with them about their band the Brothers McClurg and the record label they started, Old Bear Records. We talk with them about how to deal with conflict in creative environments and how to come to decisions together in creative environments as well as how the Brothers McClurg and Old Bear Records began.
Roemer is based in Berlin, Germany and came to Old Bear Studios in 2019 to record a 5 song EP produced by Old Bear producer, Chris Hoisington. The project is unlike any project we’ve recorded or released before as its direction and expression finds its bearings as songs of protest and social commentary ranging in topics from firearms, the dark side of grace, staying hopeful when the chips are down, alcoholism, and more. Roemer’s unique, sobering lyrics, and deep faith roots combined with a folk aesthetic and unique layered sounds which include grenade pins hitting the floor and gunfire make for an equally unnerving and hypnotizing listening experience. We simply can’t categorize this guy. Be sure to check out his music here... http://smarturl.it/sf41e3
We're all looking for some inspiration right now so Jason grabbed one of his favorite podcasts to republish. If this doesn't make you want to start experimenting in your home studio, we're not sure what will.

What happens when you mix the experimental production of Old Bear Records producer, Chris Hoisington with the Old Bear Session Squad and an award winning science fiction author? You get “Welcome Up” by Paul Levinson, that’s what! We can honestly say, we’ve never done a project like this and we are really proud of the results of this artistic collaboration with Paul! Chris Hoisington knew of Paul from his 1972 album release “Twice upon a rhyme” that has since been reissued four times (once in Japan and once in South Korea!) Chris felt that Old Bear could make a great album with Paul that combined Paul’s penchant for all things science fiction with Paul’s natural musical bents towards sunshine-pop and psychedelic folk-rock. We believe Chris was right! “Welcome Up” is a collection of eight songs that beam you up into a creative galaxy where you take on the persona of an astronaut exploring sonic spaces that at times are reminiscent of The Beach Boys on tracks like “Welcome Up” and “Tau Ceti;” and at other times can feel like the MC5 being shot out of a ray gun on tracks like “Samantha.“
Old Bear Records is branching out into exciting new territory in 2019 as we begin reissuing some of our favorite retro indie music! Certain bands and artists over the years released some incredible albums that maybe didn't get the promo or attention they deserved, and we want to help more people discover them. Some of these records have a ton of indie credibility but haven't been easy to get your hands on - until now! Plans are in place to re-issue 4 classic albums on vinyl this year by artists like All Saved Freak Band, The Trees Community, Twin Sister (Three words: Star. Wars. Grunge.), and James Duke's All the Bright Lights. Check out this brief episode of the pod for previews and more of the heart behind the reissue endeavor from Chris.
Voices In My Head Podcast Episode #288: Jessica Crawford - Honestly Jessica was born into a family of deep faith and of rich musical history. Every Sunday morning, this great granddaughter of a fiery Pentecostal minister would watch from the pews as her mother would direct the church choir. In addition to church music, she also grew up inspired by her Granddaddy's play-by-ear instrumental talents and his Southern Gospel vocals that echoed the sound of her mother's childhood. On her father's side, her paternal grandmother and great-grandmother were classically trained pianists and vocalists. Despite her family's encouragement, Jessica struggled to see that the musical legacy from both sides of her family was establishing a future for her in music. After a painful relationship left her seeking true purpose, Jessica finally surrendered to what can only be described as a persistent "call" to music. After a year well spent in seminary she stepped out in faith and left the comfort of her small hometown, Bridgewater, VA, in 2011 and hit the road to Nashville. Her years in Music City were formative for both in ministry and in songwriting. A new dependence on God, involvement with an inner city missions base, and growing favor with songwriters and accomplished producers would all help Jessica find her voice as an artist and worship leader. In 2017, Jessica would leave Nashville with a 5 song independently released EP under her belt, multiple regional tours and invaluable industry and ministry experiences to become the Worship Arts Director for Fountain of Life Church in Burlington, NJ where she currently lives and serves. On September 14 Jessica will release "Honestly", a four song EP she describes as “a collection of vulnerable songs that do not shy away from the reality of my hardest life experiences while celebrating the hope I found in Jesus through it all.” The “Honestly” EP was written with the group the Brothers McClurg during a writing retreat in early 2017. It was produced by Chris Hoisington and recorded at Old Bear Studios in Batavia, NY.https://jessicacrawfordmusic.org/ RickLeeJames.com Blessings,Rick Lee Jameswww.RickLeeJames.com This is a public episode. Weston Skaggs is the Voice In My Head this episode. The dramatic birth of his daughter, near loss of his wife in that childbirth, and the adoption of his son all were life altering experiences that fed into the songs on his first full length album: Joy & Sorrow Meet.Produced by Chris Hoisington of Brothers McClurg, Joy & Sorrow Meet marries Weston's vocation as a church worship leader and his penchant for personal storytelling. Raw lyrics set to music that doesn't mind showing off it's “humanness” draws the listener into a journey of the heart. Stylistically, the album combines classic gospel and folk, strung together with alt-country instrumentation, then set in an indie-sonic landscape. Weston Skaggs is many things. A South Carolina boy raised in Ohio. Husband to Amy and daddy to Paisley and Bo. Singer/songwriter. Beard enthusiast. Registered nurse. Star Wars nerd. A no longer suffering Cleveland sports fan. And most importantly: Christian. This causes his music to be painted with the brushes of redemption, faith, hope, and love. "I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that changed me from my blindness and self-centeredness to a life of purpose. I'm passionate to create a fresh and unique musical sound that offers encouragement to the church and hope to lost and hurting people.", Skaggs says. In late February of this year, Joe sat down with Anthony and Chris Hoisington (and bevy of other fine individuals) and enjoyed an extended conversation with the group known as Brothers McClurg. Sadly, when we sat down a week later to edit the interview for a feature episode, tears welled up in our our eyes – after five minutes, the audio flat-lined, rendering most of the interview unusable (unless you like to hear a monotone buzz for 40 minutes…).The thing is, we really like these guys, and their music is great. Therefore, we made the decision to swallow our pride and share the small bit that we do have, because we want to get the word out about Brothers McClurg one way or another. So, although the episode is brief, it is still fun. Listen in, download their latest releases (Home and Around the Mic), and be sure tell a friend about the fresh new music you’ve discovered.
