Voices In My Head Podcast Episode #288: Jessica Crawford - Honestly Jessica was born into a family of deep faith and of rich musical history. Every Sunday morning, this great granddaughter of a fiery Pentecostal minister would watch from the pews as her mother would direct the church choir. In addition to church music, she also grew up inspired by her Granddaddy's play-by-ear instrumental talents and his Southern Gospel vocals that echoed the sound of her mother's childhood. On her father's side, her paternal grandmother and great-grandmother were classically trained pianists and vocalists. Despite her family's encouragement, Jessica struggled to see that the musical legacy from both sides of her family was establishing a future for her in music. After a painful relationship left her seeking true purpose, Jessica finally surrendered to what can only be described as a persistent "call" to music. After a year well spent in seminary she stepped out in faith and left the comfort of her small hometown, Bridgewater, VA, in 2011 and hit the road to Nashville. Her years in Music City were formative for both in ministry and in songwriting. A new dependence on God, involvement with an inner city missions base, and growing favor with songwriters and accomplished producers would all help Jessica find her voice as an artist and worship leader. In 2017, Jessica would leave Nashville with a 5 song independently released EP under her belt, multiple regional tours and invaluable industry and ministry experiences to become the Worship Arts Director for Fountain of Life Church in Burlington, NJ where she currently lives and serves. On September 14 Jessica will release "Honestly", a four song EP she describes as “a collection of vulnerable songs that do not shy away from the reality of my hardest life experiences while celebrating the hope I found in Jesus through it all.” The “Honestly” EP was written with the group the Brothers McClurg during a writing retreat in early 2017. It was produced by Chris Hoisington and recorded at Old Bear Studios in Batavia, NY.https://jessicacrawfordmusic.org/ RickLeeJames.com Blessings,Rick Lee Jameswww.RickLeeJames.com This is a public episode. Weston Skaggs is the Voice In My Head this episode. The dramatic birth of his daughter, near loss of his wife in that childbirth, and the adoption of his son all were life altering experiences that fed into the songs on his first full length album: Joy & Sorrow Meet.Produced by Chris Hoisington of Brothers McClurg, Joy & Sorrow Meet marries Weston's vocation as a church worship leader and his penchant for personal storytelling. Raw lyrics set to music that doesn't mind showing off it's “humanness” draws the listener into a journey of the heart. Stylistically, the album combines classic gospel and folk, strung together with alt-country instrumentation, then set in an indie-sonic landscape. Weston Skaggs is many things. A South Carolina boy raised in Ohio. Husband to Amy and daddy to Paisley and Bo. Singer/songwriter. Beard enthusiast. Registered nurse. Star Wars nerd. A no longer suffering Cleveland sports fan. And most importantly: Christian. This causes his music to be painted with the brushes of redemption, faith, hope, and love. "I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that changed me from my blindness and self-centeredness to a life of purpose. I'm passionate to create a fresh and unique musical sound that offers encouragement to the church and hope to lost and hurting people.", Skaggs says. In this episode we talk with Chris from Brothers McClurg about the heart of selecting music for our church. Some topics covered: How every church will have it's own unique needs for worship. The desire to sound just like the recordings of bigger worship ministries and the struggle that can cause. The need for songs in our sets that cause thought for our congregation. How it is ok to do stripped down sets and music. Starting the service with something more contemplative than a big uptempo one. The art and craft of set building. The importance of understanding who will be at the service and what they'll need to sing. How to maintain our spiritual walk with God. Writing for our congregation or writing in emulation of others. The importance of relationship with your senior pastor. Encouragement for new worship leaders. The place of hymns in our sets. The need to connect our congregations to the truth of what they're singing.
In June of this year, we published a humble, five-minute Amp'd episode that featured Brothers McClurg. Those of you who've been following understand that we shared the only remaining usable audio from an otherwise wonderful conversation. Well, because God is good and Brothers McClurg are good guys, we managed to connect again in late Summer for a redo interview. Our great friend, Paul Herman from CCLI, offered to allow us to use one of their conference rooms and host this motley group. We're proud to say that the resulting interview turned out great. Tune into this fun conversation about music, heritage, and their recent releases: Home and Around the Mic. Oh, and just ignore that crunching sound. It's only the guys chowing down on M&Ms provided by CCLI. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
OverviewAlbum: HomeArtist: Brothers McClurgGenre: Gospel, Roots RockLabel: SprigRelease Date: March 31, 2015Standout Tracks: “Still”, “Hem”, “Lord Lord Lord”ReviewIn 2012, a worship band out of Buffalo, NY, released an under-appreciated LP. Join the Sound by Brothers McClurg was released with little fanfare and, as one might expect, performed poorly. Subsequently, they were released by their label, and they retreated back to Buffalo to regroup.Fast forward three years. Chris and Anthony Hoisington, the brothers of Brothers McClurb, return to the scene with Home (and also a fine EP, Around the Mic). It represents a rededication to the legacy of music and their family’s musical heritage tracing back to The McClurg Family Singers (a southern gospel group led by Pastor Bill McClurg, their maternal grandfather). It’s not that the group had abandoned that sound for their prior album – it was just buried in arrangements. With the marketplace seemingly flooded with other acts jumping in on the roots-driven country folk bandwagon made popular by the Civil Wars and Mumford &Sons, it is easy to be dismissive of yet another entry. But Home represents the elements one hopes for in good music: authenticity and familiarity without coming across as derived. Home will call to mind elements of The Eagles (think “Seven Bridges Road”), Counting Crows, Jackson Browne, and Gaither – all depending on the song. The tone is set immediately with “Intro”, a 41-second mono track that emulates a person shuffling through stations on AM radio. It effectively sets you in the correct timespace for Home. This nimbly transitions into “Move Us On”, a gentle, tightly-arranged worship song featuring discerning touches of steel guitar. The pace picks up with “Still” and “Hem”, the stand-out tracks on the album – representative of the breadth of styles present on Home. Your toes will tap, and you quickly find yourself singing along.Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of Brothers McClurg as evidenced on Home is their adept blending of the southern gospel of their heritage with touches of modern worship. It provides a bridge between generations that draws each to find a greater appreciation for the individual styles.Of course, it’s impossible to ignore the quality of their execution. The harmonies are tight, the songs tastefully arranged, with obvious attention given to the overall flow from beginning to end.In fact, the presentation is almost good enough to overcome a weaker second half. Not surprisingly, on a 14-track LP there are bound to highs and lows. Thankfully, the lows are only considered such in comparison with the strong first half of the album.Home by Brothers McClurg is a fine LP of folk-driven worship music – probably one of the best of 2015. If there is justice in the world (and there seldom is in music), it will garner the attention and accolades it deserves. For now, allow us to encourage you to download a copy of your own. If you’re the skeptical kind, at least start out with downloads of “Hem” and “Still”. There’s little doubt you’ll be hooked from that point. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In late February of this year, Joe sat down with Anthony and Chris Hoisington (and bevy of other fine individuals) and enjoyed an extended conversation with the group known as Brothers McClurg. Sadly, when we sat down a week later to edit the interview for a feature episode, tears welled up in our our eyes – after five minutes, the audio flat-lined, rendering most of the interview unusable (unless you like to hear a monotone buzz for 40 minutes…).The thing is, we really like these guys, and their music is great. Therefore, we made the decision to swallow our pride and share the small bit that we do have, because we want to get the word out about Brothers McClurg one way or another. So, although the episode is brief, it is still fun. Listen in, download their latest releases (Home and Around the Mic), and be sure tell a friend about the fresh new music you’ve discovered.
