Becoming a Joiner The Fourth Sunday of Easter May 8, 2022 Ashley Cleveland, Pastoral Associate Church of the Redeemer, Nashville www.Redeemer-Nashville.net
Grammy and Dove award winner, Ashley Cleveland, honestly discusses childhood, life in the margin, and the road to recovery. She shares with us the growth and lessons that come through pain as well as inspires others on their own road toward healing.
By the time she became a GRAMMY winner, singer/songwriter Ashley Cleveland had found the success she learned to prize as a child. But it wasn't until she hit rock-bottom in her alcohol addiction that Ashley realized performing still left her with longing—and that God could give her the love and affirmation she'd craved all along. Quotes “I'm a person who really understands bondage. I've lived in it for so much of my life, so that kind of freedom is so beautiful to me, even if I just taste it and then ping right off of it. That's what I'm looking for.” —Ashley Cleveland “I kind of came up thinking of God as a performance-loving God. And the God, of course, that I met was anything but. And then as I grew closer to Jesus, everything started to make sense, and I realized that it was His life in me that I was offering.” —Ashley Cleveland “Even in the profound disappointments and losses, what I know is that He doesn't give me everything that I longed for, but what He does give me every time is Himself and more and more of it.” —Ashley Cleveland Ashley's LinksAshley's website Ashley's Facebook Ashley's Twitter Ashley's Instagram Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeChurch of the Redeemer: Nashville, TN Ignatian spiritual exercises Connect with Sally Lloyd-JonesJesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

We also present a special medley of songs from the incredible new Stonehill tribute project There's A Rainbow Somewhere, featuring contributions by Amy Grant, Sixpence None the Richer, Ashley Cleveland, Jars of Clay, Andrew Peterson, Phil Keaggy, and many others. Doubt Second Sunday of Easter April 11th Ashley Cleveland, Pastoral Associate Church of the Redeemer, Nashville www.RedeemerNashville.net
Of all the singers I've heard, there are a small handful of people that every time I hear their voice, I stop and just soak in the music… close my eyes and just basque in excellence. Singers like Matthew Ward, Russ Taff, and Ashley Cleveland who could sing the dictionary, and I would buy it. My shortlist of favorite vocalists also includes a pair of siblings, one of whom is my guest today. Lynda Randle is a singer who can SING! And obviously, I'm not alone in that assessment. Billy Graham, Andrae Crouch, and Bill Gaither have all asked to work with Lynda.
On the show today, Tim simply shares a number of Scriptures (and some thoughts) to encourage listeners on Election Day. Every single day I receive multiple emails from listeners saying they are stuck and can't figure out their Enneagram type. Usually, my first recommendation is to dive into the Subtypes of each number to see if that helps narrow things down. But there is something else to consider…something we have not yet talked about on Typology. Just as the Enneagram is broken into Triads, it is also broken into Stances--the Dependent Stance, the Withdrawing Stance, and the Aggressive Stance. So, if you're still conflicted, ask yourself which stance are you? Are you someone who is withdrawing? Are you someone who is assertive? Or are you someone who is dependent and more compliant? Because oftentimes when you're stuck between two or three types they can each feel very different--like they are in conflict with each other. And when those types don't fall into the same stance category then knowing your "default stance" can really help iron things out. On today's episode of Typology, Ashley Cleveland and I delve into the stances, right-sizing the personality and how surrender and acceptance are the gateways to everything. It's a great episode you won't want to miss. Since her debut on Atlantic Records in 1991, Ashley Cleveland has recorded 9 critically acclaimed albums. She has won three Grammys for Best Rock Gospel Album (Lesson of Love, 1995; You Are There, 1998; Before the Daylight's Shot, 2007). She was the first female to be nominated in that category and the only one to win the award three times. She has been nominated for six Dove awards and won twice for compilation records (Songs from the Loft: Praise and Worship Album of the year; The Jesus Record: Album of the Year). She received her fourth Grammy nomination in 2010 for her disc, God Don't Never Change, a collection of spirituals in the Best Traditional Gospel Album category. Three of her albums have been on Billboard's year-end best list (Big Town, Bus Named Desire, Men and Angels Say) and she has been nominated twice for a Nashville Music Award (Lesson Of Love, God Don't Never Change) winning for Lesson Of Love. She was named Female Vocalist of the year in 2007 by Christianity Today.net and, in addition to her own recordings, has contributed background vocals on over 300 records over the course of her career. Her 10th album, One More Song, is due for release late in 2017. Ashley is currently the subject of a new documentary from Big Branch productions expected to release in early 2018. The working title is: Who's The Girl?. Ashley is a writer/essayist and has written a memoir entitled “Little Black Sheep” which was released September 2013 by David C Cook Publishing and she is currently working on two new memoirs. Ashley is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, and lives in Franklin, Tennessee with her husband Kenny Greenberg. She has three adult children, Rebecca, Henry and Lily. Buddy Greene: Virtuoso Harmonica, Gaither Sideman, and Co-Writer of “Mary, Did You Know” Over the last 30 years, Buddy Greene has performed across America, made numerous trips abroad, and established himself as a predominantly independent recording artist. In 1991 he won the Gospel Music Association’s Dove award for Best Country Album, and has received 9 other Dove award nominations. Through his long association with the Gaithers, he has become a favorite gospel performer, often appearing on the Gaither’s popular Homecoming video series, and recently featured in a Best of Buddy Greene DVD retrospective. Buddy has also made his mark as a songwriter. Besides the many self-penned songs of his own recordings, he co-wrote (along with Mark Lowry) the modern Christmas classic “Mary, Did You Know,” recorded by a host of major artists, including Kathy Mattea, Kenny Rogers and Wynonna, Natalie Cole, Clay Aiken, CeeLo Green, Rascal Flatts, Mary J Blige, and Pentatonix. Other songs of Buddy’s covered by major artists include “Recovering Pharisee” by Del McCoury, “Fall Down, Children” by The Whites, and “He Is”, a number one for gospel artist Ashley Cleveland. Throughout his career, Buddy has steadily advanced as a harmonica player. He has played on the recordings of many outstanding artists, including Jerry Reed, the Gaithers, Riders in the Sky, Charlie Peacock, Bela Fleck, The Ojays, Sara Groves, Keith and Kristyn Getty, Sandi Patty, and Larnelle Harris, just to name a few. After hearing Buddy’s 2002 release “RUFUS”, legendary folk icon Doc Watson invited Buddy to join him onstage at the prestigious MerleFest roots music festival in 2003 and subsequent years. In 2009 he joined an auspicious lineup of Nashville virtuosos to help jazz bass legend Charlie Haden celebrate his country roots in the Grammy nominated recording and video project Rambling Boy. Other milestones in Buddy’s career include performing at numerous Billy Graham crusades, especially the 1992 New York Crusade before a crowd of 250,000 in Central Park, and his performance of the “William Tell Overture” at Carnegie Hall, captured live on a Bill Gaither Homecoming video and subsequently posted on YouTube, has been viewed by millions. In this episode, John Chisum sits down with his long-time friend to reminisce, talk about songwriting as part of Buddy’s amazing career, and to share some of the songs from Buddy’s newest recording “Looking Back” available now at buddygreene.com and soon at all major music outlets. This week on MCR our cup runs over with stories and soul as the mood turns to the holidays and an attitude of gratitude. We open with the sincerity and show stopping voice of country star John Berry who offers an acoustic band set. The show closes with a songwriting legend from Texas who's a newly minted author of a short story collection. It's a dual release book and album by Radney Foster. In between, two volcanic vocalists with deep roots in southern music and an impeccable way with a song. Ashley Cleveland conjures a spirit and an atmosphere of grace in her gospel rock. Jimmy Hall, of Wet Willie fame and collaborator with Jeff Beck, takes his harmonica and blows the roof off the place.
