The Old Bear joins the show in the season finale! John sits down with Kevin Martin for an hour-long conversation. As always, they kick things off with the Top 4 lightning round…which quickly dissolves into stories from Kevin's career (3:10). John asks Kevin about playing with 'fiery thirds' throughout his career (14:15), doing PR and building the Martin brand the old school way (17:50), and Kevin recalls getting chirped by the Sedins after going on a 5 game losing streak against Swedish legend, Peja Lindholm. In Dirty Laundry, Kevin talks about blowing his back out mid-game and having to be carried off the ice in Saskatoon (24:45), calling a fellow curler by the wrong name for a decade, his worst losses (27:35) and the lessons learned from them. They discuss some of Kevin's battles with Curling Canada that ultimately led to a boycott (30:10), the lineup that many consider the Greatest Team of All Time (30:50), Kevin recalls talking to Ben Hebert about making some adjustments if he wanted to play on Team Martin (41:00) and John asks Kevin what legacy he wants to leave behind (48:40).We get some shocking results and even more amazing stories in Extremely Difficult Own Career Trivia (50:00) and learn about an alternate universe where Kevin is an NHL center, in the Extra End, as Kevin answers a question from Reid Caruthers. This podcast is produced by Mike Rogerson & John Cullen, recorded and mixed by Mike Rogerson, and hosted by John Cullen. Hallo there, friends. This is Mr. Edward Bear, or Winnie-the-Pooh, or Pooh Bear, or sometimes only Pooh, here with a Very Important Message for you. The world is a great, big, wide place, full of beautiful things like honey and balloons and all your friends and relations. As you go along your way in this great, big, wide place, you will have all sorts of marvelous expeditions and see many extraordinary things. But sometimes, because it is such a great, big, wide place, it also has things in it that are rather frightening, and terribly sad. Sometimes that can make it a bit difficult to think about all of the good and lovely things. I would like you to remember that if you should ever need a place to go where you are safe and sound, you may always call on me - or Christopher Robin, or Piglet, or Owl, or Eeyore, or Rabbit, or Kanga, or even baby Roo. We're always here in the Hundred Acre Wood, ready with tea and cake for you anytime you should like to visit. We all love you very much, you know, and always will. Your friend always, Your Silly Old Bear

The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Night's Watch - The men who guard the Seven Kingdoms against threats from beyond the Wall. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Ser Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Maester Aemon - One hundred-year-old maester of the Night's Watch. Ghost - Jon Snow's direwolf. Mance Rayder - Leader of the Wildlings, self-styled King-Beyond-The-Wall. Thoren Smallwood - Acting first ranger of the Night's Watch. Eddison Tollett (Dolorous Edd) - Unhappy member of the Night's Watch. Benjen Stark - Brother of Ned Stark, uncle to Jon Snow. First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Has been missing north of the Wall for many months. Qhorin Halfhand - Ranger of the Night's Watch at the Shadow Tower. Synopsis Today we celebrate the birthday of one of Dvorak's composition pupils: one Julius Fucik, who was born in Prague on today's date in 1872. Fucik studied with Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, where he also took lessons in violin and bassoon – and perhaps only a bassoonist could have conceived of a work with a prominent bassoon part entitled “The Old Bear with a Sore Head.” In 1897 he was appointed bandmaster of the 86th Austro-Hungarian Regiment and started writing works for wind band. Fucik's first appointment with the Regiment took him to Sarajevo, and in 1910 he became bandmaster of the 92nd Regiment stationed at Theresienstadt, or Terezin as the town is now called. Now, in the years before World War I, “Sarajevo” and “Theresienstadt” did not have the ominous connotations of political assassination, concentration camps, and ethnic cleansing that they do for us today.Fucik retired from the military in 1913 and died in Berlin in 1916. But speaking of connotations, even if you've never heard of Julius Fuick, chances are you've heard his “Entry of the Gladiators,”, since it was taken up by American circus bands as the unofficial anthem of life under the big top. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. Old Bear Records reissued the self titled debut album by atmospheric instrumental rock band, All The Bright Lights on vinyl to commemorate the ten year anniversary of its original release. All The Bright Lights was a North Carolina based trio that quickly made a name for themselves with alt rock and indie fans due to their unique brand of melodic swirling guitars, brooding arrangements, sonic patchwork, and a masterful approach to writing and performing instrumental music that cuts right to the heart. Members James Duke, Jon Duke, and Jacob Arnold’s musical chemistry is still ear candy for the music lover and we simply couldn’t be more excited to add this release to our growing instrumental Old Bear catalog. All the Bright Lights’ debut album will be a delight for fans of the Cure, the Smiths, Radiohead, Swervedriver, and Arcade Fire.

Roemer is based in Berlin, Germany and came to Old Bear Studios in 2019 to record a 5 song EP produced by Old Bear producer, Chris Hoisington. The project is unlike any project we’ve recorded or released before as its direction and expression finds its bearings as songs of protest and social commentary ranging in topics from firearms, the dark side of grace, staying hopeful when the chips are down, alcoholism, and more. Roemer’s unique, sobering lyrics, and deep faith roots combined with a folk aesthetic and unique layered sounds which include grenade pins hitting the floor and gunfire make for an equally unnerving and hypnotizing listening experience. We simply can’t categorize this guy. Be sure to check out his music here... http://smarturl.it/sf41e3
What happens when you mix the experimental production of Old Bear Records producer, Chris Hoisington with the Old Bear Session Squad and an award winning science fiction author? You get “Welcome Up” by Paul Levinson, that’s what! We can honestly say, we’ve never done a project like this and we are really proud of the results of this artistic collaboration with Paul! Chris Hoisington knew of Paul from his 1972 album release “Twice upon a rhyme” that has since been reissued four times (once in Japan and once in South Korea!) Chris felt that Old Bear could make a great album with Paul that combined Paul’s penchant for all things science fiction with Paul’s natural musical bents towards sunshine-pop and psychedelic folk-rock. We believe Chris was right! “Welcome Up” is a collection of eight songs that beam you up into a creative galaxy where you take on the persona of an astronaut exploring sonic spaces that at times are reminiscent of The Beach Boys on tracks like “Welcome Up” and “Tau Ceti;” and at other times can feel like the MC5 being shot out of a ray gun on tracks like “Samantha.“
My voice is BACK...kinda. On today's part 5 of Clash of Kings I fend off the last of the sniffles while also meeting Brienne (wow!), Asha (Brilliant!), Gilly (Yay!), Quaithe (Cool?) and.... Craster (Oh.) because today's chapters include some absolute gems such as: - Catelyn II - Jon III - Theon II - Tyrion VI - Arya VI - Daenerys II So come and step on the Isle, especially if you like Jeor-bashing because I go OFF on the Old Bear while also bowing down to the brilliance that is Asha Greyjoy and piecing together what I call Balon's Bonkers Plan. The Night's Watch have a ranging up North with Sam and Jon in attendance. Samwell proves why he deserves his spot among the other men of the Night's Watch. Jon is the last to receive the news that his father has been imprisoned for being a traitor. While spending the night in a cell for attacking Alliser Thorne, Jon finds himself face to face with a wight in the Old Bear's chambers. As always we give our chapter inductees, and we have some wonderful correspondence from you the listeners! In this latest episode of the Bear Tone Podcast we do a deep dive on Old Bear's latest reissue: Star Wars tribute band Twin Sister. A long time ago in a garage far away... Some friends from different bands started trading punk and funk riffs back and forth and somebody told Todd Fadel to step up to the mic and sing something over it. And all he could think of where Boba Fett lines! This 'rebel scum' explosion of fun gave kids at their shows permission to not take themselves so seriously and Twin Sister soon became the hottest act in Portland's mid-90s Alt Christian scene. Frontman Todd Fadel is here to tell the story as well as Bradley Swanson, who is a curator for that particular music scene (check out the BandCamp page 'The Corral On Spin Cycle' to explore a really cool era). As always, our Bear Tone hosts Anthony Hoisington and Lukas Iverson are the 'scruffy looking nerf herders' at the helm of the pod.
The first temptation: with Ned Stark dead, Jon Snow must choose between family and vengeance or his vows. Neville Longbottom helps show Jon the way, and through a talk with the Old Bear, Jon finally makes his choice. Talkin' the greatest movie of all time and the worst decision of all time.
Andrew and Manu finally complete their long journey through the first season of "Game of Thrones." Scenes discussed include Yoren explaining the plan for "orphan Arry" to Arya, her first encounters with Hot Pie, Lommy, and Gendry, and the Old Bear revealing to Jon that he knows about his attempted escape. With a stirring speech, he urges Jon to stay loyal to the Night's Watch and join the great ranging beyond The Wall. Oh yeah, also dragons are born through sacrifice in a ridiculously good set of scenes with Dany, Jorah, and the Dothraki. NBD. It was okey dokey. Thank you all for joining us through this trek through season one, and we can't wait to get started on the next one. BryndenBFish tells how diehard ASOIAF fans can come to love Dany's similarly climactic scene with the Dothraki in season 6 George R.R. Martin explains back in a 1999 chat how Targaryen fire resistance is likely a miraculous one-time anomaly in the books Register with the discount code "Manu" for Con of Thrones (Nashville, July 12-14) iTunes link Google Play link
Winter has finally come in the Northern United States, so what better time to revisit HBO’s Game of Thrones with a study of one of the most complex characters hailing from the North. This week, we’re talking about Ser Jorah Mormont, disgraced son of the Old Bear, advisor to the Dragon Queen, and a fascinating model for knightly codes of honor. We’ll go back to the history of chivalry, its imprint on literature through Arthurian Romance, and where this medieval system intersects with Jorah. We’ll also discuss the role of romantic love in the world of Westeros, and unpack the complicated questions of Jorah’s past romances, his desire for Daenerys, and the ultimate impact of his love. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/midnightmyth/support
Old Bear Records recently invited recording artist, Weston Skaggs to join hosts Lukas Iverson and Anthony Hoisington on the newest episode of Bear Tone Podcast. Together, they discuss what it was like to be the first artist to record with Old Bear; who some of the influences that shaped his sound were; how to keep things festive while recording a Christmas album during the summer; how a rare organ found on the side of the road became the main instrument on Weston’s album; and more! Get to know Weston through this new episode of Bear Tone!
Old Bear releases one of our favorite Bear Tone podcast interviews to date with our good friend, Ed Chilungu. Ed talks about his first time meeting Anthony; Pappy McClurg’s influence on his life; how listening to a jazz album led Ed into his first experience in Christian worship; his struggle with mental illness; what he thinks of Thelonious Monk’s musicianship; his inspiration behind some of the songs on his new album “Soundtracks” and much more. As you’ll hear in the interview- we had a lot of fun with Ed and shared some very honest and vulnerable moments together. Don’t miss this episode of Bear Tone Podcast out today!

Andrew and Manu travel to the Wall in "Baelor" through the eyes of Jon Snow. Since he saved Lord Commander Mormont, the Old Bear gifts him the Valyrian sword Longclaw, a Mormont family heirloom. They talk about the sword and Alliser Thorne, and afterward, Jon learns from Sam that Robb Stark is marching south. Conflicted, Jon is summoned by Maester Aemon, who has a heart-to-heart with him in which he explains his Targaryen roots and the similar hardships he faced watching from the Wall as his house fell to ruin during Robert's Rebellion. Every word from the late Peter Vaughan is chilling and moving, so we try to give this moment its due. It's incredible and chalk full of connections to the story writ large. Let's get to it. Jon talks with Jorah about Jeor Mormont and tries to give him Longclaw back in season 7 (which we also touched upon in our podcast recap of that episode) Helpful video with graphics explaining the Targaryen family tree (Note: The show simplifies it by skipping a generation and making the Mad King the son of Maester Aemon's younger brother Aegon the Unlikely, rather than the grandson) Once more: Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" podcast discussing Bran IV Just watch the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon again. It's too perfect. iTunes link Google Play link

This week’s Punwatch, in which one punster loses really, really slowly. It’s like watching someone fall over in slow motion. This episode is titled, “Magpies lose match against 10,000 year old bear at cancelled Phil Collins show.”. That guy from The Block is in there too, but his story sucked so it doesn’t get into the title. That’ll show him. Punsters: Alex Malone, Lisa Dib & James Ferris Host: Andrew Cherry
A single foretold mead-filled weekend has filled this week of GOO with Friday numbering not one, but two. Selina is away hunting Alaskans as Micah, Zack, and Eric keep warm by the fire reserved for Old Bear in his tower, recounting their story of Jon Snow and his burned, bloody bastard sword.
