How Artists Think Biblically: Liturgies, Ritual, and the Weight of Words (Douglas McKelvey) Ep. #203

What gives someone the right to script your prayers? In this powerful conversation, Douglas McKelvey, author of the bestselling Every Moment Holy liturgical series, joins Dru Johnson to unpack the spiritual and theological journey behind his work. From a childhood steeped in neo-charismatic theology to a disillusioning college experience at Oral Roberts University, McKelvey shares how God used a profound unraveling—what many today might call “deconstruction”—to rebuild a biblically coherent faith through unexpected mentors and communities. Listeners learn how McKelvey became part of the Art House Foundation and later the Rabbit Room, drawing from the legacies of Francis Schaeffer, Edith Schaeffer, and Andrew Peterson to create a community of artists grounded in Scripture. Along the way, he opens up about the fear and trembling that should attend writing liturgies—and what it means to write prayers people will carry into their most vulnerable moments. This episode explores beauty, hospitality, ritual, and the theological integrity behind the words we say to God. Whether you're a liturgy lover, creative, or just someone seeking coherent theology after chaos, this is an episode that will stay with you. What does a Shire full of hobbits in Middle-Earth, a county full of farmers in Kentucky, and a wardrobe full of a lion have in common? For Russell Moore and singer/songwriter/author Andrew Peterson, they were all a way to find home.    In this episode—recorded inside Peterson's book-lined Chapter House in Nashville, right down the road from Moore—the two talk about the authors who, by God's grace, helped hold their faith together when it could have come apart. From the wisdom of Wendell Berry to the imagination of C.S. Lewis to the honesty of Frederick Buechner, these authors gave a clarity that helped these two keep the faith.    This isn't just a literary conversation. It's about how God uses stories, sentences, and sometimes even sword-wielding mice to reach people in moments of doubt, disillusionment, or despair. Along the way, they talk about what it means to read widely, to hold onto wonder, and to be the kind of Christian who can still be surprised by joy.   They also somehow end up talking about Moby Dick, Dungeons & Dragons, and how ChatGPT was wrong and right about what books each of them would take to a desert island.    Books and authors mentioned in this episode include: Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry A Room Called Remember and Telling Secrets by Frederick Buechner The Chronicles of Narnia, Till We Have Faces, Mere Christianity, and more by C.S. Lewis Godric by Frederick Buechner David Copperfield by Charles Dickens Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson Moby Dick by Herman Melville Reading Genesis by Marilynne Robinson The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction by Alan Jacobs And selections from Andrew's own works: Adorning the Dark, The God of the Garden, and The Wingfeather Saga Whether you're deep in faith, on the brink of losing it, or just looking for something beautiful to read, this conversation will remind you why the right book at the right moment can do more than explain—it can point to new life. Have any of you watched the movie “The Notebook”?  At the end, one of the characters, who has dementia, experiences an episode of lucidity.  When I watched it, between tears (I'm a complete softie) I remember thinking, “Oh no! This will give people false hope!  That their loved one is ‘in there.' If only they could find the right key to unlock the lock and let them out.” Today we talk about lucid episodes and what they might mean to the person with dementia, their family and loved ones, to philosophers, to clinicians, to neuroscientists. Our guests are Andrea Gilmore-Bykovskyi, a nurse researcher, and Andrew Peterson, a philosopher. We had a wide ranging discussion that touched on (among many things): A consensus definition developed at an NIH conference, organized by the recently retired NIA program officer Basil Eldadah (we will miss you Basil!). Andrew complicates this definition, stating is raises more questions than answers. Hospice nurses know that terminal lucidity “is a thing” and have pretty much all  seen it Family and caregiver stories of lucid episodes and what they meant to them, including early glimpses into a study Andrea is doing using video to capture episodes and show them to family. Potential for experiences to elicit “false hope”, misunderstanding/misinterpreting, and changing say code status from DNR to full code (rare but happens). Sam Parnia's work on brain activity during CPR and near death episodes Ethical issues these lucid episodes raise  Should clinicians treat people with dementia as always lucid? Having some level of awareness?  Parallels between how we treat people with advanced dementia, who may or may not be lucid, and how we treat AI, who may or may not be conscious, or experiencing paradoxical lucidity on their way to full consciousness.  I try to say please and thank you to the AI I interact with other than Alexa, who is obviously way behind. The Age of Aging podcast episode on lucidity, featuring Anne Bastings, Jason Karlawish, Elizabeth Donnarumma, and Justin Clapp Was Andrew's song choice, “I can see clearly now” better than Eric's suggestion “Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche?   Enjoy! -Alex Smith

When Andrew Peterson started the Rabbit Room—this was 2006 or 2007—he didn’t know what to expect. He had no way of knowing that this little group blog written by friends and friends of friends would give rise to annual conferences—Hutchmoot and Hutchmoot UK—to a publishing house, to an event space—North Wind Manor—to The Local Show, to Rabbit Room Theater, to the podcast network of which The Habit Podcast is a part. More to the point, Andrew had no way of knowing what a difference the Rabbit Room would make in the lives of so many people. In this episode, Rabbit Room founder Andrew Peterson and Rabbit Room Executive Director David Bruno tell the story of the Rabbit Room.Support the show: https://therabbitroom.givingfuel.com/memberSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

MinistryWatch Podcast

The music industry has been in something of a mess over the past two decades. Digital platforms have come and gone and come again, completely reshaping – and then reshaping again – the economic model of the music industry. The Christian music industry has had to undergo all these changes plus more: the rise of the worship genre, the growth of such radio juggernauts as K-Love and Salem, and the economic pressures these innovations have placed on the rest of the industry to conform or die. And the worship genre itself has shaped the way the church worships – whether we like it or not. Through all these changes, a small but influential music label in Nashville has not just survived, but it has thrived. That label is Centricity, and it owes much of its success to my guest today, John Mays. John is one of the co-founders of the label, and he has retained the title of Senior VP of A&R. And if you don't know what that means, stay tuned. John will explain. John Mays began his career as a musician, playing bass for some of the early bands in the CCM genre, first as a road dog, then as a session player. He worked for industry leader Word Records early in his career. With Word, Centricity, and others, he has been influential in the careers of artists such as Cindy Morgan, Point of Grace, Phillips, Craig & Dean, Andrew Peterson, and many more. John is currently working with Peterson, Jason Gray, and Lauren Daigle, among the two dozen or so artists currently on the Centricity label. John had this conversation with me from his home near Nashville. A special word before we go. I'm a bit of a music guy. I find music to be nourishing spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. Contemporary Christian Music and Christian radio also have an outsized impact on the evangelical movement. So from time to time, we'll feature musicians on the MinistryWatch podcast. To hear recent interviews I've done with Charlie Peacock, Fernando Ortega, Andrew Peterson, and others, just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the “Podcast” button at the top of the page. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Thanks to PR guy extraordinaire Rick Hoganson for helping me arrange this interview with John Mays. Until next time, may God bless you.

There are two ways to view April Fool's Day. The typical way is to make others look like a fool. The other is to reveal the fool already inside you. One leads us to Happy and Healthy. The other does quite the opposite. The question is, how would you like to spend your April Fool's Day? Listen and find out, then share with someone else who could use some Happy. You'll be Happy you did! Here's a great article from Very Well Mind that supports this concept: https://www.verywellmind.com/the-benefits-of-making-fun-of-yourself-5271389 Here's the link to "Be Kind to Yourself" by Andrew Peterson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYiM-sOC6nE The songs we used in this episode are "Be Kind To Yourself" by Andrew Peterson (see YouTube link above), "Are You Happy" by Primitive Radio Gods and "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante.
