By Adam Turteltaub Neurodiversity tends to be spoken of as an issue to be recognized and, quite often, as a barrier to overcome. Katie Roemer, Vice President, Compliance & Privacy Officer at Alta Hospital Systems see it differently: as an asset to your compliance team. In this podcast she points out that many neurodivergent people excel at pattern recognition and system level thinking, as well as root cause analysis, all of which are of great value to compliance teams. They can also help us to communicate better. Meeting their needs can help with general workforce training. Some examples include: Avoiding densely packed slides with light fonts that are hard to read Breaking the learning up into discreet pieces Previewing what is going to be learned and the length of training Letting the audience know what is the most important part of the training Giving key takeaways and highlighting key points To leverage the neurodiverse fully, she recommends creating a psychologically  safe environment that encourages everyone to speak up without fear of consequences. Each of these films shows a different side of what made him such a singular filmmaker: his empathy, his curiosity, and his ability to sit with people at their most vulnerable without ever forcing sentiment or judgment. This episode is both a reflection and a celebration: an appreciation of a filmmaker whose perspective mattered, and whose films continue to resonate in ways that feel as immediate now as they did when he first made them. Their conversation covers the legal and scientific reasons behind the overrepresentation of veterans on death row. Captain Cody, a retired U.S. Naval officer, currently serves as Director of the Center for Veteran Criminal Advocacy. Dr. Xenakis, a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General and psychiatrist, works extensively with youth and adults and is a leading advocate for improving mental health care for veterans. Both bring extensive experience and a long-standing commitment to reform within the military and civilian justice systems. Ms. Roemer, the lead author of DPI's new report Forgotten Service, Lasting Wounds, describes how the legal system treats veterans sentenced to death and underscores the role of military service, trauma, and inadequate treatment in shaping case outcomes. As part of this report, DPI has produced the first comprehensive list of veterans sentenced to death in the modern era of the death penalty.

Squash demands speed, strength, and control at the edge of human range — but still suffers from a massive stigma around heavy lifting and underuse of strength and conditioning. Brigita Roemer is leading the shift as Director of Strength and Conditioning for U.S. Squash, where she oversees all off-court physical development. After suffering a devastating injury as a track and field athlete, she discovered strength and conditioning when a biomechanics team “put [her] back together,” setting her on a linear path in the profession. Assigned to a sport she had never heard of before, Roemer began by emphasizing injury risk reduction, full range of motion, and “strength at length” to meet squash’s extreme movement and deceleration demands. With frequent connective tissue injuries like sprains and strains, athlete availability remains a top concern. Historically, not many players lifted heavy. There's still like a massive stigma around heavy lifting and squash with making players bulky and slow and all the things that we're a little bit more current on in the field.” 11:00 “Because, physically, it's a brutal sport, man. It really is. I did a ton of research on any sort of studies that have been done in the sport. There aren't a lot, but there's some, and they spend something like, 81 to 95% of the time on court in zone 5. There's six to eight times their body weight going through the kinetic chain when you do a hard lunge to the front. Just the percentage of connective tissue injuries in the sport are wild. I mean, the season is basically all year long, with the exception of June to August.” 12:07 “I always start with injury reduction first. They can't get better at the sport if they can't be on court. So the best ability is availability, as they say. I make sure that whatever programming I do really hones in on a lot of that and the connective tissue stuff.” 17:25

Leah graduated from Berkeley Law in 2023, where she participated in the Death Penalty Clinic and earned a certificate in Public Interest and Social Justice. Leah discusses how some judges, prosecutors, and politicians alter their behavior in capital cases while running for office, creating unpredictability and inconsistent outcomes for people facing death sentences. However, she explains that the “accepted political wisdom” about the death penalty—that an official must take a pro-death stance to win an election—no longer appears to be true based on DPIC's research, as many voters now favor candidates willing to criticize or even oppose capital punishment.
