Debut novelists, Roisin O'Donnell and Chris McQueer, go head to head in a war of the words. They discuss their latest books ("Nesting" and "Hermit"), their writing inspirations, the power of short stories and the rise of toxic masculinity. Whilst Andrew Tate doesn't in any way dominate this conversation (nor should he dominate any conversation), the authors discuss how young boys and men are being radicalised through dangerous people on social media and what, if anything, can be done about it. Both books also look at the theme of coercive control, which again is something else that is on the rise. They also recommend us some brilliant books - and have a bit of a love-off about Wendy Erskine. THE BOOK OFF 'Threats' by Amelia GrayVS'Demon Copperhead' by Barbara Kingsolver Hosted on Acast. Chris McQueer is a Scottish writer and spoken art performer. Writing in the Scottish vernacular, he is known for his dark comedy and surreal humour. He is best known for his two published collections of short stories Hings and HWFG. His debut novel, Hermit, is out now.We had a great chat with Chris, hearing about how he first decided to start writing his stories on Twitter, and why becoming a full-time writer wasn't all it is cracked up to be. We hear about why he has moved from short stories to novels, and why he wanted to write the story of a vulnerable young man in Hermit.Links:Buy Chris's books nowFollow Chris on InstagramSupport us on Patreon and get great benefits!: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali caught up with writer Chris McQueer who was last a guest back in 2018. Since then Chris has been working on his debut novel which is now with us in the form of Hermit, published with Wildfire Books on the 27th February.Chris gives a synopsis of Hermit before explaining how the novel has changed in terms of style and story over the years while the central characters of Jamie and Fiona were always there. The two discuss the inspirations behind all the characters, how the structure helped the writing, finding the rhythm of this novel, writing about difficult subjects, and the dark and depressing research Chris undertook to best understand the online subculture of incels.Chris also talks honestly about the challenges in, and expectations of, writing his first novel after the success of his two short story collections HINGS and HWFG, and what he's looking forward to next. Hermit is one of the most eagerly-awaited novels of the year, and it was such a pleasure to be able to discuss it with the author in such an open and insightful manner. For full details, including all the ways to listen, go to scotswhayhae.com

What does America's 44th President have in common with former Hearts, Rangers and Scotland defender David Weir? More than you'd think, if a memorable article from one of Adam's guests is anything to go by. Neil Cameron has spent 30 years in Scottish sports journalism, and he discusses the lighter side to Jim McLean that he discovered when ghostwriting the Dundee United icon's newspaper column, his belief that Dick Campbell is the best manager in Scotland, the angry man who fixed Hugh Keevins' washing machine, writing about the anniversary of Screamadelica, being the subject of a complaint to UEFA and his Obama/Weir crossover. Author, columnist and documentary presenter Chris McQueer returns to the show in order to set the record straight on those 'anti-English' allegations, unearth some bizarre Celtic mottos, give his verdict on Angeball, recall watching Jim Leishman flirt, explain how he took himself out of his comfort zone as a writer, tell Adam what to expect from his new BBC documentary on Scotland's attitude to England and confirm that, despite what a newspaper front page might have suggested, he's still very much alive. Adam debunks a myth involving Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon, puts questions from Twitter to his guests and counts down a hate-filled, McQueer-themed top 5 featuring a Tory MP and a panda who just loves Fridays. AUTHOR and lifelong Celtic fan Chris McQueer found fame through his Glasgow-inspired short story collections, Hings and HWFG. His latest project, a documentary named Noteworthy, available now on BBC iPlayer, sees Chris touring Scotland in a bid to learn more about the faces that feature on our currency. At the end of his journey, Chris crafts his own banknote, and, while we won’t spoil who made the final cut, it did get us thinking – which Celtic legends would the man himself vouch for if he were to create a Hoops-inspired banknote? “On the front of a note, you need to just have one person’s face,” said Chris this week's episode of the official Celtic View podcast. “On the front, I’ll have Jock Stein. We’ll have a nice portrait of him on the front. “On the back, I’ll go for… it’s got to be Billy McNeill. Get a picture of him in there, holding the European Cup up over his head. And then, on either side of him, I think I’ll pick two players from my time watching as a fan, so two of our more recent players. On one side of Billy, it’ll need to be Henrik Larsson, and then I’ll go for Scott Brown on the other side.” In Noteworthy, Chris’ end product takes the form a seven-pound note. With this is mind, his hypothetical Celtic-inspired currency is worth an impressive £67. Chris added: “So, on the front, Jock Stein. On the back, Billy with the Big Cup, Henrik on the left mid-celebration, and then Scott Brown on the other side – probably a picture of him barking his orders. I’ll make it a 67-pound note as well. I think that would be quite good!”

Age hasn't slowed us down one bit. We're back and in top form for Episode 14 of Extreme Polls! Our guest is the excellent Chris McQueer, who was with us on our first episode, getting back in amongst the patter once more, with aplomb, at Brown Towers in Glasgow.Sco Pa Tu Manaa gets it tight, what a heinous phrase that is. Chris and Sean both rant about different issues regarding Celtic, but it's not all moans as Twix Tops are back, and you'll not be surprised to hear how many boxes Stevie's already ate.Polls chat ranges from Megan Rapinoe playing for your club, to never entering the same building twice, which was the ultimate headfuck from Mark. There's also a superb guest appearance from Sean's dad which is worth the download alone, where he discusses forming a partnership with Odsonne Edouard.Follow our twitter page @justvoteimo to take part in Chris's poll to the audience too.You can also follow Chris at : @ChrisMcQueer_ - check his bio and buy his books. We're in one of them. Win Win. Thanks a lot for listening.

"For the latest podcast Ali spoke to the writer Chris McQueer about his latest collection of short stories, 'HWFG'. If you haven't heard of or read Chris' work, where have you been? His previous book, 'Hings' took the world of Scottish writing by storm announcing a fresh and exciting new voice. 'HWFG', ('Here We Fucking Go', if you haven't worked it out yet), sees him build on the success of 'Hings' introducing readers to new characters as well as bringing back fan favourites. It was fascinating to hear what inspired Chris to write, his influences, the difficulty in following a hit, the highs and lows of being reviewed, and his plans to branch out from writing fiction. He also kindly reads one of his stories which gives the uninitiated a great introduction to Chris McQueer and his work.
