In this first installment of our four-part conversation with two-time major champion Jane Geddes, FORE the Good of the Game co-hosts Mike Gonzalez and Bruce Devlin take listeners on a journey back to Jane's unlikely beginnings in golf—and what a story it is.Born and raised on Long Island, Jane Geddes never set foot on a golf course until the age of 15. A move to Summerville, South Carolina left her feeling like an outsider—until a chance introduction to the game changed her life forever. With no prior experience, no clubs of her own, and no country club pedigree, Jane's golf journey began with a single seven-iron and a generous teaching pro, Derek Hardy, who saw something special in her swing from day one.Jane reflects with honesty and humor on the cultural shock of moving to the South, the loneliness of high school, and how golf became her unexpected refuge. From shag bags and Walmart clubs to developing her game on a neighborhood driving range, this is a raw and inspiring look at how talent, curiosity, and a bit of fate launched one of the great careers in women's golf. You'll hear how she went from a complete unknown to walking onto the Florida State team, and how pivotal influences—including Derek Hardy, Dave Pelz, Jim McLean, and Dr. Bob Rotella—shaped her game and mindset. This episode offers a rare glimpse into the humble and heartfelt beginnings of a future major champion. This Week on Next on the Tee, I'm joined by three incredible guests. In Part 1, I start with one of the game's all-time great instructors—Tom Patri. Not only is Tom a phenomenal teacher, he's also a fantastic player. Tom is sharpening his game for the Senior Florida Open, happening April 22–24 at Aberdeen Golf & Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida. You'll hear how he dominated the course during his practice round for the qualifier, plus his thoughts on Rory McIlroy's win at The Players, J.J. Spaun's valiant effort and willingness to face the media after falling short, perhaps something Collin Morikawa could take a lesson from. Next up is a longtime friend from our Thursday Night Tailgate football show, former NFL defensive back Vencie Glenn. Vencie played for the Patriots, Chargers, Saints, Vikings, and Giants—and he's just as popular in golf circles as he was on the football field. I share one of my favorite stories about walking Augusta National with him and how he introduced me to Phil Knight and Tiger's mom. The golf world knows and loves this guy, and for good reason. We chat about former NFL players who excel at golf, and how Vencie honed his skills to become a ball hawk in the league, racking up 35 career interceptions. Please come back for Part 2 of this week's show featuring the Next on the Tee debut of another Top Instructor in our game, Taylor Crosby. Taylor is a disciple of Jim McLean and is now teaching at The Kingdom at Reynold Lake Oconee. He's fantastic! You're going to really enjoy his stories plus the playing lessons he shared. Thank you for pressing play on this week's show. I appreciate you!

We get into those questions and much more with my guests: Hall of Fame Instructor Jim McLean, former Tour Player and all-time great Analyst Frank Nobilo, the Starter at 23 US Opens Ron Read, and PGA Tour Advance Rules Official Stephen Cox. Jim McLean has been inducted into 4 Hall of Fames. His list of awards and accolades as an Instructor are too numerous to list. I get Jim's thoughts on how we can build confidence in ourselves and our game's, how to raise our play to tournament level, and the one thing we can do today to lower our scores this weekend. Frank Nobilo won 14 times around the world, he finished in the Top 10 of all 4 majors, and is now an all-time great Analyst. We discuss why PGA Tour players are overpaid, what could happen if the PIF/PGA Tour partnership doesn't go through plus, we go back to his T4 finish in the 1994 US Open at Oakmont, and what it was like being on the course at Augusta National as Greg Norman was collapsing in 1996. Ron Reed worked for the USGA for over two decades and was the Starter at the US Open from 1986 to 2010. We hear his memories of announcing Arnold Palmer in Arnie's final US Open at Oakmont in 1994, who Ron thought was the most nervous player he ever saw standing on the first tee (his answer will surprise you), being there for Payne Stewart's triumph in 1999 and Phil's heartbreak in 2006. You'll also hear the heartwarming story of presenting Tom Watson's caddie Bruce Edwards with the flag from the 17th green from the 1982 US Open. We also get the story of the beaver who halted the 1990 US Amateur Public Links tournament. Follow Ron on Twitter @golfdinosaurrr and get his book, Starting the US Open, Shinnecock to Pebble Beach online at www.ronread.com or on Amazon. Stephen Cox has been a PGA Tour Rules Official since 1997. We hear about some of the unpopular rulings he's had to give out over the years and the players who didn't agree with him. We learn about the job the Rules Officials do which goes way beyond riding around in a golf cart handing out penalties. They are responsible for course setup and playing conditions and sometimes they are working on those things a year in advance of the tournament. We also discuss the rule he thinks the USGA & R&A need to take another look at. You can follow Stephen and his peers plus send them your rules questions on Twitter @pgatourrules.

In this week episode I interview my good friend legendary golf instructor Jim McLean, who is one of the most prolific golf instructors of the last 30 years. He is known for coining the phrase “X-Factor”, observing that the greater the differential between the hips and shoulders at the top of the swing, the more power the golfer can create. He pioneered the use of video for golf instruction and was one of the first adopters of radar technology used in swing analysis tools like TrackMan. He is also authored and sold over 15 different books and videos, and taught some of the greatest golfers of our generation. Including, Sergio Garcia, Curtis Strange, Gary Player, Bernard Langer, Al Geiberger, US Open champions Liselotte Neumann, Jane Geddes, Lauri Merten, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Webb Simpson, and Hal Sutton to just name a few. Ever found yourself frozen over the golf ball, your mind buzzing with so many thoughts that your swing becomes stiff and your shot goes wayward? That's what Jim McLean calls a “death move”, and there are 21 of these moves that can completely wreck your game if you don't pay attention! In the third of this 3-part series, Justin Klemballa, who was mentored by McLean himself, discusses the last 7 of these 21 death moves in golf. We start off with our 15th death move: moving the head well ahead of the ball during the driver swing. This shift is identified as a significant obstacle to hitting the ball farther and making solid contact. Justin also talks about the mistake of letting your right foot spin-out in the downswing, resulting in what he calls a “fake finish”. Another death move, casting from the top is attributed to a premature throw from the top of the swing. This is often caused by the golfer not realizing that the start of the downswing begins with the lower body. The next two death moves both relate to “chicken winging” the club. Justin offers tips on minimizing this common tendency and on delofting the club at impact to improve accuracy and distance. Then there's hitting low hooks due to swinging too much inside out. Justin's solution is simple, yet game-changing: Just let the club do its job rather than trying to force it up into the air. Finally, Justin explains how to avoid letting the club go vertical in the follow-through, and teaches a powerful drill which involves imagining a pane of glass atop your shoulders as you swing. Ever found yourself frozen over the golf ball, your mind buzzing with so many thoughts that your swing becomes stiff and your shot goes wayward? That's what Jim McLean calls a “death move”, and there are 21 of these moves that can completely wreck your game if you don't pay attention! In the second of this 3-part series, Justin Klemballa, who was mentored by McLean himself, discusses the next 7 of these 21 death moves in golf. We kick things off explaining how folding of the right elbow can result in a narrow backswing, and its opposite yet equally deadly mistake: dropping the club below the right elbow in the downswing. We talk about the importance of flexibility and mobility in golf, likening a good swing to holding a pizza pie. We go on to discuss the club shaft tip-over in your swing, a death move that typically leads in pulls and slices, improving your balance to avoid sliding past the ball on the downswing, and how to stop yourself from putting your weight on your toes in the backswing. Another common death move comes about as a result of constantly being told to “keep your head down on the ball” in the backswing: excessively dipping your body. Justin's goofy drill to keep this from happening is to dangle a glove from your mouth, and try to swing while keeping the glove from moving. Finally, Justin teaches us how to avoid regripping the club during the swing by imagining the club to be a paintbrush. To watch this episode on YouTube, click here. Ever found yourself frozen over the golf ball, your mind buzzing with so many thoughts that your swing becomes stiff, and your shot goes wayward? That's what Jim McLean calls a “Death Move”, and there are 21 of these moves that can completely wreck your golf swing! Jim writes about all 21 Death Moves in his book, "The 8-Step Swing". In the first of this 3-part series, Justin Klemballa, who was mentored by McLean himself, discusses the first 7 of these 21 death moves in golf, starting with the paralysis of overthinking. Make sure you tune in, since we don't just call out these mistakes, but provide actionable tips and strategies to ensure you avoid making them going forward. We've all seen it, maybe even done it — moving our head towards the target as we swing. It's a rather common misstep that can lead to what's known as a reverse pivot in the downswing. Justin and I delve into the reasons behind this prevalent error and provide a handy shadow drill for rectifying it. But it's not just about the head movement; overextending your backswing, failing to engage your hips, or having too “armsy” or "handsy" a backswing can throw off your entire game. We explore how rotating the hands in a clockwise position can open the clubface too much, prompting a state of recovery in your swing. On the other hand, we also go through the pitfalls of having the clubface being too closed. To wrap up, we tackle the seventh death move — an open club face at the top of the swing. It's a common error among slicers, often resulting in a low left hook. We'll walk you through the differences between a square face and an open face at the top of the swing and explain how a cupped left wrist can prompt the face to open. In this weeks episode I interview Robert Winskowicz, the founder and CEO of Sqairz golf shoes. The vision for SQAIRZ started on a New England driving range, where a pair of square-toed dress shoes spurred a visual realization. This idea continued through years of research into ground force reaction, biomechanics and foot movement. It culminated award-winning shoes, now played on tour, that will help every golfer hit more accurate and powerful shots.Sqairz are worn by some of the most famous and successful instructors and PGA Tour winners in history including Sir Nick Faldo, Sepp Straka, John Daily, Mark Calcavecchia, Rick Smith, Jim McLean, Nick Bradley and more!Support the show

We all remember our first World Cup, and Adam's no different. His was USA 94, and on this episode he's joined by 'USA 94: The World Cup That Changed The Game' author Matt Evans. Matt, who has also written about the likes of Graeme Souness, Jock Stein and Alessandro Del Piero for These Football Times and Nutmeg magazine, discusses that tournament's impact, the hype surrounding Colombia before the finals and tragedy that followed, interviewing the likes of Italy manager Arrigo Sacchi, Roberto Baggio memories, why USA 94 is underrated, writing about Dundee United legend Jim McLean and his favourite football books. If you're one of the 8 million people who've seen it, you'll know theatre, film and TV actor Sandy Batchelor from a viral video in which he recorded a hilarious tour of his flat for the benefit of his letting agency. Dundee United fan Sandy tells Adam about the motivation for and aftermath of that video, Jack Ross' arrival, his delight at Dylan Levitt's Tannadice move, a bone he wants to pick with the writers of Succession regarding their Scottish football storyline, the state of Scotland's theatre scene, helping to tell the story of an important figure in Labour's history, joining BBC drama Shetland's sixth season and the advice he would give any actor. Adam asks his guests to help him debunk a myth involving Euro 2022, puts questions to his guests from social media, reads excerpts from a classic review of a football book and puts Sandy's accent skills to the test with a challenge involving Kris Boyd. When it comes to eccentric, iconic, long-serving and occasionally cranky legendary managers, Scotland has Jim McLean and England has Brian Clough. Both of those names come up as Adam is joined by a Dundee United supporter and a Nottingham Forest fan. Alistair Heather is a documentary host, columnist and Scots language advocate, who's spent the last year co-hosting Dundee United TV. On his second Old Firm Facts podcast appearance, he discusses his 'bromance' with a Tannadice legend, how he put his feelings about Fifers aside to get behind Tam Courts, why United's boss deserves credit for his anti-racism stance against Ross County, phallic referees, his conflicting emotions upon meeting Prince Charles, why he understands Weegies being reluctant to embrace Scots and how Darren Mackie became a 'reading champion' without reading. Author and journalist Daniel Storey is Chief Football Writer for the i newspaper, and won the Football Supporters Federation's Football Writer of the Year award in 2016. He talks about what other clubs can learn from Motherwell, a 'punk rock football club' in Paris, his book on football icons, the moral dilemma facing Newcastle fans, how Messi reignited his mum's love of football, an infamous Andy Cole interview and a heartwarming moment involving Clough. Adam puts questions to Twitter from his guests, debunks a myth involving Ally McCoist, Neil Lennon, Ronaldinho and some allegedly 'hilarious' Scottish football stories, reliving a classic Scottish football Q&A and sharing some in-depth analysis from Scott Brown.  Adam and Ally also discuss a campaign they're involved in addressing male sexual entitlement, and why men need to look in the mirror and address their own behaviour. What does America's 44th President have in common with former Hearts, Rangers and Scotland defender David Weir? More than you'd think, if a memorable article from one of Adam's guests is anything to go by.  Neil Cameron has spent 30 years in Scottish sports journalism, and he discusses the lighter side to Jim McLean that he discovered when ghostwriting the Dundee United icon's newspaper column, his belief that Dick Campbell is the best manager in Scotland, the angry man who fixed Hugh Keevins' washing machine, writing about the anniversary of Screamadelica, being the subject of a complaint to UEFA and his Obama/Weir crossover. Author, columnist and documentary presenter Chris McQueer returns to the show in order to set the record straight on those 'anti-English' allegations, unearth some bizarre Celtic mottos, give his verdict on Angeball, recall watching Jim Leishman flirt, explain how he took himself out of his comfort zone as a writer, tell Adam what to expect from his new BBC documentary on Scotland's attitude to England and confirm that, despite what a newspaper front page might have suggested, he's still very much alive. Adam debunks a myth involving Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon, puts questions from Twitter to his guests and counts down a hate-filled, McQueer-themed top 5 featuring a Tory MP and a panda who just loves Fridays.
