Our latest Bred a Blue podcast guest is the answer to a great quiz question! Who is the only player to have been a teammate of Paul Gascoigne, Wayne Rooney and Jordan Pickford? Top marks if you went for former Everton reserves centre-half Sean O'Hanlon. Known throughout football as ‘Chief', O'Hanlon never quite made the breakthrough at Everton after joining as a 10-year-old, but he did share a dressing room with Gazza and Rooney along the way. Indeed, he was Rooney's roommate when the 16-year-old ‘Boy Wonder' embarked on his first ever senior pre-season trip in 2002. After gaining some loan experience at Swindon Town, O'Hanlon decided to make the break from Everton in 2004 – realising that it was going to too tough to oust Alan Stubbs, David Weir, Joseph Yobo, David Unsworth or Peter Clarke from the central defensive berths. From Swindon he moved to MK Dons, for whom he scored at Wembley in the EFL Trophy final, then north of the border to Hibernian, before seeing out his playing days with Carlisle United and Stockport County. It was at Carlisle that O'Hanlon played in front of a teenage goalkeeper on-loan from Sunderland. "You could see even then that Jordan [Pickford] was heading for the top," O'Hanlon said. The former Blue hung his boots up in 2016 and then four years later, his young son became an internet sensation when, during the Covid lockdown, he recreated many famous goals in his back garden! The little fellow attracted the attention of the world's media and O'Hanlon senior found himself conducting radio interviews for stations in Brazil, Italy and many more besides!

Summer is finally here, so Andy & Martin are off on their hols to Crete to spend some time at Shepherd's Bar in Agios Nickolaos! Back in 1972 The Lotus Eaters was the flagship new BBC2 drama and the first of Michael J. Bird's quartet of Mediterranean-set serials. Starring Ian Hendry and Wanda Ventham, the series focused on the failing marriage of Erik and Ann Shepherd and the lives and loves of the community meeting at their taverna. What no-one expects, including the viewer, is that Ann is a sleeper agent who is about to be activated, nor that despite this revelation such a development is not always going to be the focus of the show. Instead Bird's serial is about anyone who is running from something, looking for a place to start again and the threat that if you eat the fruit of the lotus you will never leave... As well as Bird, the scripts were written by David Weir, David Fisher and Jack Ronder. The series was directed by Cyril Coke, Douglas Camfield, David Cunliffe and Viktors Ritelis, and produced by Anthony Read and Michael Glynn The Lotus Eaters was a new direction for UK TV drama which helped the package holiday market no end. Notably, it would find itself to be life imitating art, as Ian Hendry, just like Erik Shepherd, continued his battles with drink, love and life. With numerous other excellent regular and guest actors - Stefan Gryff, Sylvia Coleridge, Thorley Walters, Carol Cleveland, Maurice Denham, Susan Engel, Timothy Carlton, Anouska Hempel, Godfrey James, Alethea Charlton, John Savident and Julia Goodman - this Cretan-set series is a fascinating exploration of love, motivation, trust, deceit and spying, with a large side order of raki. So it's time to get you swimsuit on, slap on some lotion and get in the back garden. Put this in your ears for a couple of hours and float back in time to the Seventies. Next Time: Moonbase 3

And we feature a lovely story that Ally McCoist told at Smith's Memorial Service, held in Glasgow Cathedral, when he revealed a ‘special gift' he arranged for the man he called his second father. Although his time at Goodison didn't go as well as he wanted, Smith always retained his affection for Everton Football Club, and he thoroughly deserves his place amongst the British greats for his remarkable achievements in Scotland with Rangers.  This podcast is a reflection on his contribution to football with anecdotes that are insightful, poignant, and amusing in equal measure.

What does America's 44th President have in common with former Hearts, Rangers and Scotland defender David Weir? More than you'd think, if a memorable article from one of Adam's guests is anything to go by.  Neil Cameron has spent 30 years in Scottish sports journalism, and he discusses the lighter side to Jim McLean that he discovered when ghostwriting the Dundee United icon's newspaper column, his belief that Dick Campbell is the best manager in Scotland, the angry man who fixed Hugh Keevins' washing machine, writing about the anniversary of Screamadelica, being the subject of a complaint to UEFA and his Obama/Weir crossover. Author, columnist and documentary presenter Chris McQueer returns to the show in order to set the record straight on those 'anti-English' allegations, unearth some bizarre Celtic mottos, give his verdict on Angeball, recall watching Jim Leishman flirt, explain how he took himself out of his comfort zone as a writer, tell Adam what to expect from his new BBC documentary on Scotland's attitude to England and confirm that, despite what a newspaper front page might have suggested, he's still very much alive. Adam debunks a myth involving Chris Sutton and Neil Lennon, puts questions from Twitter to his guests and counts down a hate-filled, McQueer-themed top 5 featuring a Tory MP and a panda who just loves Fridays. David Weir is one of the Paralympic greats. He won six gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 games as well as an 8 times winner of the London Marathon. His ten Paralympic medals have come at a range of distances in his racing chair...from 200m to marathon. He talks about his career and some of the tough mental battles he's had and his suicidal thoughts. He's outspoken on the way he feels he was treated by the sports rulers at the last Paralympics. Through counselling he discovered he'd been depressed all of his life. He recalls crying as a young boy on a council estate because he wanted to be 'normal' and play football and ride a bike. He never addressed the issues until 2016 and he's now thankful he spoke out and believes he's in the best mental state he's ever been in. David retired after Rio in 2016 but he's back and hungry for action in Tokyo this summer. The "WeirWolf" has also developed a new way of coaching and set up the Weir Archer Academy to pass on knowledge, experience and enjoyment of sport to the next generation of disabled people. David is one of Britain's most decorated Paralympic athletes, becoming a household name in the glorious sporting summer of 2012. He was born with a spinal cord transection, meaning he has no movement in the lower half of his body. His early years were enormously challenging, but through a combination of God-given talent, and an unbending will, he rose through the sporting ranks to experience the joy of an extraordinary eight London Marathon victories, as a wheelchair racer, and no fewer than six Paralympic Gold medals, to go with his two silvers and two bronze. Four of those Gold medals came in a sensational ten days during the London Games, a period which led to untold joy on the track, and a deep satisfaction off it, at the changing perception of Paralympic athletes both in this country and across the globe. .........................................
