The Future of Employment in Africa: Demography, Labor Markets and Welfare explores the major trends that will define the face of the sub-Saharan continent in the next three decades. The near doubling of Africa's population by 2050 will lead to more than twenty million new job seekers entering the African labor market every year until then. Right now, Africa doesn't seem able to offer jobs to this many people, resulting in possible unrest and intra-African or intercontinental migration flows, including to Europe. Climate change creates additional migratory pressure as it threatens the future of agriculture and livestock. The author explores the opportunities for increased job creation in Africa. Fortunately, Africa has some major strengths. Africans excel in market-creating innovation: the ability to see market opportunities and innovations that others do not. Many Africans create their own jobs through micro and small enterprises. A young well-trained middle class, familiar with digital technologies, is emerging. Africa's abundant natural resources attract global powers like China aspiring to secure access to critical raw materials. The author challenges pessimistic message about the continent and provides an optimistic view of Africa's future. Learn more about your ad choices. Meet Loïc Estimbre, a Parisian entrepreneur who is behind four different eateries on just one street in the 12th arrondissement. That street: rue Emilio Castelar. In this podcast episode, we talk food in Paris, the 12th district in general, and the challenges of funding four separate spots. As for Loic, I met him when he was behind the counter at the Magic Carpet cafe and was surprised to see him literally building a new eatery down the road. Imagine my surprise to learn that he leading a team that was behind half the places on this little street. His spots: The restaurant: Le Singe à Paris The café: Magic Carpet For beer and whisky: Chinaski The sandwich spot: Johnny Dwich The music in this episode is from Pres Maxson. *********** The Earful Tower exists thanks to support from its members. Forget top-down mandates. How do you foster organic AI adoption on a skeptical, high-performing engineering team? Loic Houssier, Head of Engineering at Superhuman, joins us to share how he did just that. He explains his strategy for overcoming cynicism, which involved leveraging a highly respected internal champion, the Chief Architect, to re-evaluate the tools and prove their potential was no longer just buzz.Discover his team's biggest, unexpected productivity gains: dramatically faster ramp-up times on new codebases and the rapid creation of valuable internal tools, rather than just raw code generation speed. Loic details Superhuman's pragmatic, high-trust approach to measurement, blending qualitative feedback with simple signals like PR labels. He explains how they fostered this adoption with a bottom-up "AI Guild," empowering engineers of all seniorities without a heavy-handed mandate. He also reveals a stunning real-world example where AI turned a potentially days-long compliance task into a 90-minute win. With avian flu and bluetongue continuing to pose challenges, plus the re-emergence of foot and mouth disease in mainland Europe, 2025 has so far been a year of growing unease at the threat from animal diseases. As politicians and industry groups voice their concerns about present and future challenges, Allister Webb asks what should vets really be concerned about and how ready are we to respond to the next major disease outbreak? Loic Jégou, Ceva Animal Health's vice-president for Europe, joins Allister to share his thoughts on the current situation and what needs to be done to prevent a future crisis. We dig into what actually scales a business: a crisp 80/20 strategy, the right “engine” (your core team), and smart use of AI that goes way beyond meeting notes and automation. Loic breaks down YPO's value (it's growth, not “networking”), how psychometrics (Map & Match) surface your real strengths, why many founders should stop “running the machine,” and his three levels of AI—especially Strategic AI, which he uses in 90-minute workshops to unlock new markets, products, and business models without the old-school strategy-consulting price tag. Locking down a date and time to record podcasts with Dakotah Norton could be one of the most challenging endeavors Vital has taken on. He's a busy man, and we love him for it. The time crunch between the La Thuile and Andorra World Cups was tough on everyone, so we decided to wait until Dak returned to Tennessee to discuss how his first four World Cups went and what his plans are for the rest of the season. It'd been a few weeks since the crew caught up, so the first 40 minutes of this podcast cover plenty of non-racing topics, like the wall of responsibilities that hit Dak when he returns from Europe, how fun flying with bikes can be, and some insight into a rad bike packing trip Tanner just did up in Canada. Navigating the CEO Journey: Expert Insights from Loic Potjes of Disruptive LeapIn this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge speaks with Loic Potjes, Founder and Managing Partner of Disruptive Leap. Loic brings decades of executive experience and coaching insight to the conversation, sharing what it really takes to lead effectively in today's high-pressure business environment. From managing overwhelm and isolation to enhancing team engagement and time mastery, this episode offers a powerful roadmap for CEOs and founders who want to lead with greater clarity, balance, and impact. The CEO's Challenge: Moving from Reactive to Intentional LeadershipLoic opens the conversation with a personal note—his love of wine and community, especially as part of a wine club in Johannesburg. For Loic, passion outside of work fosters connection and personal renewal—qualities that matter just as much in leadership. But when the topic turns to the realities of being a CEO, the tone gets deeper: leadership is often lonely, reactive, and draining. He explains how many CEOs find themselves overwhelmed, stuck in the busyness of daily operations, and losing clarity on what truly drives business growth. According to Loic, one of the most effective strategies for reclaiming purpose and focus is to transition from reactive task management to a proactive leadership rhythm. That starts with self-awareness: understanding what energizes you, what drains you, and how to build a team that fills your gaps. By making space for strategic thinking and empowering complementary teams, CEOs can realign with their zone of genius and free themselves from burnout.Loic also discusses the power of consistent communication and engagement. Disengaged teams, he notes, are a global epidemic—with only 8% of French employees reportedly feeling engaged. To counter this, CEOs must not only lead with clarity but also create environments where employees thrive. Engagement starts at the top, and Loic shares practical steps for CEOs to model intentional leadership while nurturing team motivation and accountability.About Loic PotjesLoic Potjes is the founder and managing partner of Disruptive Leap, where he coaches CEOs and executive teams to lead with clarity, resilience, and impact. Loic Le Fouest is a leading expert in Customer Experience (CX) with a strong track record of driving customer-centric transformation across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors. As the head of the CX practice at Clarasys in the UK, Loic helps organisations design customer experiences that drive loyalty, innovation, and sustainable business growth. Clarasys describes itself as The Experience Consultancy — employee-owned, purpose-driven, and dedicated to helping organisations create better experiences for customers, employees, and the planet. Clarasys recognises that circular economy approaches often require fundamentally different relations between providers and users, and it's keen to understand more about that. In 2022, Loic launched a partnership between Clarasys and the University of Exeter's Centre for the Circular Economy to tackle what they saw as one of the biggest challenges in circularity — customer engagement. This collaboration led to a report and toolkit on Creating Customer Experiences in the Circular Economy, providing businesses with practical strategies to make circular models work for their customers. Loic is an experienced transformation consultant with over 10 years of consulting and industry experience, and he combines design thinking with his background in product management, digital transformation, lean 6-sigma and change management. Loic shares insights from Clarasys' collaboration with the Exeter team, which looked at how businesses were dealing with challenges around user adoption and acceptance across the food and beverage and household appliances sectors. The research team looked at the new aspects of roles, behaviour and relationships for consumers/, and Loic explains some of the key findings around that, including ‘consumption work' and ‘key moments that matter' for customers. The study also found that firms were struggling to launch and scale successful circular business models, and Loic talks about two kinds of approaches to that - ‘inside out' versus ‘outside in'.

A track on the circuit that always provides dramatic, legendary race runs, this year at Leogang was fairly uneventful. A business as usual World Cup, you could say. Rain throughout the week provided some of the most changing and challenging conditions hit the #notabikepark track, with the lower woods being the deciding factor on race day. There was exciting racing across each category, highlighted by a dominating victory in both women's fields, an upset in the Junior men's race, and another elite men's podium filled with new and returning names. With a tight turnaround heading into Val di Sole this weekend (link), reigning in our co-host extraordinaire Dakotah Norton took longer than usual. Apparently, getting to the next race, interviews, physio appointments, and dinner all come before our podcast. Up against a tighter time crunch than usual, Tanner and I recorded the post-race show Tuesday, while Dakotah and I chatted after track walk on Wednesday to hear about his mediocre weekend in Austria and gain insight into what could be the gnarliest Val di Sole track we've seen in years. 0:00 - Intro2:08 - Dak Update and Leogang recap33:15 - Val di Sole track walk notes and thoughts51:04 - Debate over braking more with your rear or front brake58:09 - Discussing the live coverage from the weekend1:00:56 - Commentators this season 1:03:18 - 15 World Cups next year?1:05:15 - Privateers at World Cups in 20251:09:23 - Is interest in World Cup downhill less than it was during the Red Bull days?1:11:12 - Another chat about electronic suspension1:20:07 - Will we see electronic suspension systems in VDS?1:22:09 - Loic's cockpit buttons1:23:17 - Why pressing a lockout mid-run isn't that difficult1:26:42 - Podium payout complaints 1:32:34 - Maxxis Make or Brake Track Analysis1:38:50 - Junior Women - race recap1:43:05 - Val di Sole predictions1:46:21 - Junior Men - race recap1:59:36 - Val di Sole predictions2:04:36 - Elite Women - race recap2:14:37 - Val di Sole predictions2:18:18 - Elite Men - race recap2:32:50 - Val di Sole predictions2:35:41 - Burgtec Labour of Love
Loic Bruni has five different electronic buttons on his prototype Specialized Demo downhill bike, and we're not even talking about shift levers. He, his mechanic Jack and Ohlins are all pretty tight-lipped about the functions they serve, but today we got a bit of information from the current World Cup DH leader himself.SuperBruni confirms the buttons are not Skittles, he seemingly teases that they're for playing music, and then says their function should be pretty easy to figure out. When asked if using them is confusing, he admits that keeping track of them is not easy and there are risks associated with hitting the wrong button at the wrong time. Regardless of their function or trickiness in pressing, Loic's in the lead right now, and that's really all that matters.
