This show was first broadcast in June 2023, as Janey faced a terminal cancer diagnosis.Last week, Janey revealed she is now receiving end-of-life care. This is another chance to hear Janey's powerful personal story of strength and survival, all told in her brutally honest, brutally funny signature style. In this episode, Janey does what she's always done: turning her own dark and difficult experiences into laugher, as she paints a vivid picture of life in the East End of Glasgow in the 60s, and recounts a childhood steeped in poverty and abuse. As she faces her own mortality, she and daughter Ashley Storrie talk, laugh and cry as they unpick some of the experiences she shares onstage.Relentlessly authentic, she's also had to face up to her own mistakes - taking responsibility and apologising both publicly and onstage, as well as sharing the shame of being ‘cancelled' and the very dark place that took her to.Then, just months later…. the hand grenade of a cancer diagnosis forced her to start fighting for her life. Now, after finally admitting that after everything she's been through in life, maybe she‘s not “fine”, and with a terminal diagnosis, she's submitted to the ultimate ‘C bomb' for many men and women of her generation - counselling. And as a result of this insight, she's more hilarious and compelling onstage than ever.Janey's experienced a life of extremes but has come out the other side with rare insight, still able to make light of all its trials and tribulations in her signature dark and uncompromising style.Recorded live in front of an audience in her hometown, Glasgow.A Dabster production for BBC Radio 4
This interview episode with Autistic writer/actress/comedian, Ashely Storrie, originally aired on May 7, 2024, under the title “Dinosaur is Autistic.”“I'm Ashley Storrie. I'm in Glasgow currently in my bedroom surrounded by pictures of space and my Lego.”“Everything that Nina feels and thinks autistically, are things I've felt and feel autistically. I didn't want to take any things out of other people's autism experience to put into Nina that I didn't have full understanding of.” “Having somebody else neurodiverse in my life has always been a really good thing.”“I tried to pretend I wasn't autistic, and it wasn't fun.”“I worked as a various catering and factory work, and I would have a different personality for every job. And that was how I got through the day was by pretending to be a completely different person because that was easier than being me.”“I didn't want autism to be the thing that held her back, or the thing that was her foil, or the thing she had to overcome. That's just a thing that exists in this world, and she's never having to, like, “overcome” autism. She's overcoming people and maybe their relationship to autism, and she's overcoming other people's things, but never autism itself.”“You're going to love it. Your brain's going to just stim on that all day. I've got to do a little audio stimming. That's how I roll.”Do you relate to Nina? What's your favorite part about Ashely's show, Dinosaur? This episode:Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP chat with Ashley Storrie—the autistic writer and star of the new series, “Dinosaur” (available on Hulu in the U.S.). Discussed:* The unconventional way that Ashely was brought on as a writer and the importance of Autistic writers shaping autistic characters.* How Ashley came to discover her autistic identity.* Autistic linguistics and the “shape” of words.* How production accommodated Ashely (and everyone else!). Plus, how Ashley avoided being triggered while authentically portraying overwhelm and overstimulation.* Why casting autistic actors in autistic roles is not only good representation—it's good business!* An autistic brain love fest.* The behind-the-scenes process of deciding on the exact sexual history of Ashley's character, Nina.* Same foods, sensory seeking tastes, and stimming with food!* Ashley's complex history with The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.Quotes from this episode:“And she was like, you know, ‘You spend your life accommodating people. How about for this, we'll accommodate you?'”“So good, so clever, but also understood the assignment because it's a lived experience. And that's like you're saying: if you live it and you know it, it's not hard.”“It was more going right into myself and saying, ‘Who would you be if you didn't have all of that burden of pretending?'”“She's overcoming people, and maybe their relationship to autism, and she's overcoming other people's things, but never autism itself. That's a part of her and she loves it.”“So I've licked the Great Wall of China. I've licked Jimi Hendrix's guitar…It was such a compulsion of tasting history that I had to do it.”“And I have like a crunchy food, a soft food, a wet food and a dry food. And that's how I roll.”“Yeah, so much of what's magical about this show is just feeling so seen. And it's just such a gift.”More on Ashley:Comedian, writer and actress Ashley Storrie can be heard hosting her BBC Radio Scotland show live every Friday night from 10pm-1am. She is also the co-host of the new Midsomer Murders Podcast. Ashley is also known for her Harry Potter parody #tanyapotter, which has now had over 22 million views. Janey Godley doesn't know how long she's got left, so she's telling ALL the jokes! This is her extraordinary story. Fearless and unflinching, yet life affirming stand-up at its very best. In this episode, we hear how Janey became an unlikely teen bride for a shy autistic 16 year-old who dressed like insurance salesman, and how a mixed marriage that seemed doomed before it even began, has lasted for over 43 years. Oh, and there's that time they met Prince. With added insight from Janey's daughter Ashley Storrie, who helps her mum remember the stories of their life together with humour and love. Relentlessly authentic, she's also had to face up to her own mistakes - taking responsibility and apologising both publicly and onstage, as well as sharing the shame of being ‘cancelled' and the very dark place that took her to. Then, just months later, the hand grenade of a cancer diagnosis forced her to start fighting for her life. Now, after finally admitting that after everything she's been through in life, maybe she‘s not “fine”, and with a terminal diagnosis, she's submitted to the ultimate ‘C bomb' for many men and women of her generation - counselling. And as a result of this insight, she's more hilarious and compelling onstage than ever. Janey's experienced a life of extremes but has come out the other side with rare insight, still able to make light of all its trials and tribulations in her signature dark and uncompromising style. Growing up surrounded by gangsters and a dysfunctional family, this is the story of Ashley - a tall comedian who loves William Shatner and hates textured fabrics. Glasgow's nightlife in the early 1980's was still flying the flag for disco, bell bottoms and oversized lapels, and it was outside the local club in Shettleston where Ashley's parents met for the first time, starting the story that led to an unexpected marriage and a family feud that was never resolved. Hi, I'm Kev F and I'm here to tell you about Comic Cuts The Panel Show, your new favourite podcast about comics.Every week I get two guests to bring a panel from a comic into the show. We try and guess where it's from, then we talk comics. Sometimes we get nerdy and knowledgable, and you learn a lot about comics you've probably never heard of, and more often we get inspired by what we see and the conversation goes off at wild tangents. My guests so far have included comic creators like Brian Bolland, Rachel Smith of Quarantine Comix, Metaphrog, Jessica Martin, Julius Zebra's Gary Northfield, The Beano's Nigel Auchterlounie, Laura Howell, Rianne Rowlands & Nigel Parkinson, manga artists like Sonia Leong & Laura Watton, Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, Psycho Gran's David Leach, Resident Alien creator Peter Hogan, and loads of comedians including Bethany Black, Will Hodgson, Paul Kerensa, Iszi Lawrence, Doug Segal, Ashley Storrie, Juliet Burton, Juliette Myers, Susan Murray, Bennett Arron. I've had The Secret History of Hollywood's Adam Roche, and legendary singer songwriter Dean Friedman - and the guest list grows every week. And the comics they've brought in have ranged from Marvel and DC to The Bunty and The Eagle, from Robert Crumb to Viz, from brand new webcomics to obscure manga, indy to classic, and all points in-between. There are so many comics out there, and so much love for them.So listen in, have fun guessing what comics we're looking at, and enjoy the conversation with this stellar cast of guests, in a show that - did I mention - is only half an hour long?Subscribe to Comic Cuts The Panel Show, wherever you get your podcasts, and we'll see you every Friday. Expect the unexpected.
Comedians and podcasters Louise Leigh and Ashley Storrie bring in panels from an exciting new Scottish Indie comic, and a nostalgic treat from the sixties. From bondage gear to doll hospitals, psychopathic clowns to the innocence of youth, it's all here.See the images from all episodes here at kevfcomicartist.com (they're also in the episode artwork).Every episode, the guests reveal a panel from a comic, we try and guess where it's from, then we chat about it. Half an hour later hopefully we've learned something, or just shown off and had fun along the way.If you've enjoyed this, why not buy us a virtual coffee Kev F's Ko-Fi page.Your host, and series creator, is Kev F Sutherland, writer and artist for Beano, Marvel, Oink, Viz, and most recently author and artist of graphic novels based on Shakespeare. kevfcomicartist.com
