It is a privilege to welcome Taskmaster presenters Greg Davies and Alex Horne to a special edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Taskmaster is a BAFTA-winning and International Emmy-nominated comedy entertainment show initially created by Alex Horne. Greg Davies stars as the all-powerful “Taskmaster” who, with the help of his loyal assistant Horne, sets out to test the wiles, wit, and wisdom of five comedians through a series of strange and surreal challenges in what is the most hard-fought and ridiculous comedy entertainment format on TV. So far, 170 episodes have been produced in the UK as part of a landmark six-season deal with Channel 4 in 2020. The broadcaster recently renewed the agreement for six more series following nine record-breaking series on UKTV's Dave. Taskmaster has triumphed as one of Channel 4's most popular programs in recent years, coming in as the channel's third most streamed title of 2023 with 2.3 billion viewing minutes recorded across all series watched in the year. The launch episode of the latest series [S17] averaged an audience of 3.2m, with 40% of viewing coming from streaming [0-28 days, all platforms].Watched by a broad multi-generational audience, Taskmaster was Channel 4's youngest skewing series last year, and in terms of audience share of young viewers (16-34) across last year's series on the channel, it was second only to Gogglebox in the coveted 9 pm slot. Taskmaster was recently crowned Best Comedy Entertainment at the Rose d'Or Awards 2024 and has previously won Best Comedy Entertainment Show at the National Comedy Awards 2022 and 2023, Best Comedy Entertainment at the BAFTAs 2020, and Best Entertainment Programme at the Broadcast Awards 2018, having previously received two more nominations for the Broadcast Awards and recently picking up its fourth BAFTA nomination for the 2023 ceremony. It has also been nominated for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award at the NTA's 2021 and 2022, Best Comedy Entertainment at Rose d'Or 2023, Studio Entertainment at Rose d'Or 2021, Best Entertainment Programme at the RTS Awards, Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, the Broadcast Digital Awards, Edinburgh TV Award, the TV Choice Awards, and Best Returning Format in the International Format Awards 2020. The original Taskmaster program can now be seen in 120 countries. Over 92 seasons and 921 episodes have been commissioned outside the UK, with local versions now in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Portugal, where it ranked first for most-watched entertainment programs on its channel RTP 1. The Taskmaster YouTube channel has been hugely successful internationally, reaching over 10.9 billion impressions since its first launch in October 2019. It has just over 870 million views and over 1.6 million subscribers, of which over a third are from North America. The channel has had over 196 million hours of content viewed, with 56% of those hours from North America (108 million hours watched). The show has grown significantly in popularity with American audiences, and over the last year, there have been 123 million views. On this special edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Greg Davies and Alex Horne spoke about Taskmaster's tenth anniversary on television, previewed the Series 19 opener, and why they brought the series to the United States.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

This week on the Anglotopia Podcast, we interview author and podcaster Tom Salinsky and explore his new book Red Dwarf: Discovering the TV Series, a deep dive into the beloved British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. Tom discusses his inspiration for the book, covering every episode, and how the BBC's skepticism of sci-fi made Red Dwarf an underdog that grew into a cult classic. The interview touches on the show's humor, its influence on British TV, and the challenges of chronicling decades of content, from broadcast to remastered versions. Join us for a fun discussion about British TV comedy and science fiction. Links Red Dwarf: Discovering the TV Series: Volume I: 1988-1993 Red Dwarf on BritBox Tom Salinsky The Best Pick Movie Podcast Takeaways Origins of Red Dwarf: The BBC was hesitant about a sci-fi sitcom, but Red Dwarf emerged due to a quirk in budget allocation, allowing it to become a cult hit despite early obstacles. Unique Format: The series capitalized on the British sitcom format, combining science fiction with the traditional "two men who hate each other but can't leave" dynamic, popular in shows like Porridge. Character Chemistry: The show's enduring appeal lies in the chemistry between the characters, especially Lister and Rimmer, whose opposing personalities anchor the narrative. Cultural Legacy: Red Dwarf influenced later sci-fi comedies, despite the BBC's general disdain for the genre. Its longevity and ability to adapt over decades have cemented its place in British television history. Behind-the-Scenes Insights: Tom's research uncovered original ratings, unbroadcast scenes, and unused scripts that reveal new aspects of the show's creation. Sound Bites On Red Dwarf's Origins: “Red Dwarf almost didn't happen—it snuck past the BBC's deep suspicion of science fiction, thanks to a bizarre quirk in their accounting.” On the Show's Characters: “You've got two losers—one content with his lot, one frustrated and hating himself—and that dynamic has kept the show fresh through 70 episodes.” On Revisiting Every Episode: “For the first episode, I watched the broadcast version, remastered version, DVD extras, and multiple commentaries… I think I know that episode pretty well by now.” On the Show's Longevity: “The consistency of the cast is one of the things that's kept Red Dwarf going. It's amazing to see how stable the chemistry has been after all these years.” On British vs. American Comedy: “In America, sitcoms tend to start with a problem and end with a resolution. In Britain, sitcoms often begin with an aspiration and end with dashed hopes.” Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Red Dwarf and Its Cultural Impact 02:45 The Journey of Writing the Book 05:48 The Backstory of Red Dwarf's Creation 08:48 The Evolution of Red Dwarf's Popularity 11:32 Behind the Scenes: Fun Facts and Mishaps 14:27 Challenges in Analyzing Red Dwarf 17:29 The Cult Following of Red Dwarf 20:36 Red Dwarf's Longevity and Comparison to Other Sitcoms 23:32 Character Dynamics: Rimmer and Lister 26:17 Humor and Storytelling in Red Dwarf vs. Star Trek 29:14 Expectations for Future Red Dwarf Episodes 32:16 Tom Salinsky's Future Projects 35:03 The International Appeal of British TV 38:06 The American Remake of Red Dwarf 41:04 Recommendations for Other British Comedies Video Version https://youtu.be/_-_AZ7CEnAI

In this episode, we delve into the quintessential British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, created and written by Roy Clarke. Airing on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995, this beloved show captivated audiences with its witty portrayal of suburban snobbery and eccentricity. We explore the origins of the series, the inspirations behind its characters, and its impact on British comedy. From Hyacinth Bucket's infamous pronunciation of her surname as "Bouquet" to the hilarious antics of her dysfunctional family, we examine what made this show a timeless classic. Hyacinth Bucket, brilliantly portrayed by Dame Patricia Routledge, is the heart of the series. Her relentless pursuit of social status and her comically disastrous attempts to impress her neighbors form the core of the show's humor. We discuss Routledge's illustrious career and how she brought Hyacinth to life, making her one of the most memorable characters in British television history. We also touch upon the other key characters, including Hyacinth's long-suffering husband Richard, her sisters Daisy and Rose, and their quirky father. The show's success wasn't limited to the UK. Keeping Up Appearances found a dedicated fan base in the US, Canada, Australia, and several European countries. We explore its international appeal and how it became BBC Worldwide's most exported television program by 2016. Through interviews with cast members, fans, and television critics, we gain insight into why this show resonated with viewers across the globe and how it continues to be beloved by audiences today. We also examine some of the show's most iconic episodes and moments. From Hyacinth's disastrous candlelight suppers to her encounters with the nervous postman and the bemused vicar, we relive the scenes that had audiences in stitches. With its sharp writing, memorable characters, and timeless humor, Keeping Up Appearances remains a shining example of British sitcom excellence. Join us as we celebrate this iconic series and its enduring charm. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Ryan felt we needed to lighten things up and dive back into some digestible fluff that he could get into his snarling teeth. But kinda what we found was that he's been tamed slightly. No longer has the pretentiousness of cinema's past enveloped his dark soul now that he's found the work of Nick Hurran. Yes. Nick. Oh, sweet Nick. This man knows what he's doing with this (one of his many "body swap" films in his filmography). This happens to be one of the better examples. Now, it's no BIG. It's no FREAKY FRIDAY. It's VIRTUAL SEXUALITY: the spunky British comedy with plenty of that late 90's style and lack of taste that the early 00's also brought. But hey, it's nostalgia. You kinda had to be there. (Also, Ryan remains unchanged.)

As Johnny Vegas once said - “Who's ready for ice cream?” After nearly 200 episodes, we're finally getting round to Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, kicking off with the absolute belter that is 2004's “Shaun of the Dead”. A film which features more dead celebrities than Austin Powers' address book; more cameos than a karaoke machine stuck on “Word Up”; and dares to ask the eternal question about whether or not dogs can look up. Having honed their cinematic flair with the essential turn-of-the-century sitcom “Spaced”; Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg took their love of Romero's Living Dead Trilogy (as it was then); melded it with British RomCom mundanity and created probably the best horror comedy hybrid since “An American Werewolf in London”; with scares, gore and laughs in equal measure, plus an absolute genuine heart. Twenty years on, this film remains a high watermark of British Horror and British Comedy, its status as a classic was never in doubt from day one. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

Richard Sparks from "Merry ol' England" has experienced tremendous success in the entertainment business, having worked with such luminaries as Placido Domingo, Rowan Atkinson and the inimitable John Cleese of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers fame. Richard got his big break as a writer on "Not The Nine O'clock News", an irreverent take on the days affairs that featured anchors broadcasting from bed and the unique talents of Rowan Atkinson. One of Richard's biggest claims to fame is as the author of Atkinson's famous "Schoolmaster" routine, in which the future Mr. Beane puts a hilarious spin on attendance taking and dsicipline. As satisfying as his career was, Richard always had an itch to scratch as a fantasy fiction writer. Buoyed by his night time hobby of online gaming, his latest novel "New Rock New Role" hits the market later this year, just in time for the holidays. It's a tour through the gallery of some of the greatest British comedians of all time, many of whom our guest had the pleasure of knowing! #newrocknewrole #rowanatkinson #johncleese #notthenineoclocknews #theschoomaster #fantasyfiction #sciencefiction #montypython #fawltytowers YUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3 https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobriety-Blues-David-Mojo3/dp/B091N8BJNB Richard Sparks Official Website, where New Rock New Role can be ordered: https://richardsparks.com/ Rowan Atkinson "The Schoolmaster" https://youtu.be/FiWJWLCoH2M?si=Ggj76TZAetUIDBOc Yeah Uh Huh Social Stuff: Yeah Uh Huh on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Facebook https://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Twitter https://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPod Yeah Uh Huh on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aa Yeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yeah-uh-huh/message

This week on On Story, we're joined by the comedic genius Stephen Merchant for a conversation on his impressive career in television. Perhaps best known for co-creating (with Ricky Gervais) BBC's The Office, Merchant's work writing and directing the critically acclaimed show attributed to the series earning multiple comedy awards, including three BAFTA awards, two British Comedy awards, two Golden Globe awards, a Primetime Emmy, and a Peabody Award, all before Merchant served as the executive producer on the immensely successful adaptation. The US series was a long-running hit, receiving five Primetime Emmy awards and forty-two nominations of its own during its run on NBC. Other pillars in Merchant's career include starring, co-creating, co-writing and directing the HBO series Hello Ladies, a sitcom based on Merchant's stand-up show of the same name. Currently, Merchant serves as the co-creator, executive producer, writer, director and star of his newest series, The Outlaws. Co-created with Elgin James, the crime thriller and comedic television show follows seven very different strangers who are sentenced to community service as payback for their various crimes. Yet things certainly take a turn when the group discovers a bag full of money, unaware of its dangerous owners, in this hit co-production from BBC One and Amazon Studios. A pivotal creative in the world of comedy, AFF was delighted to honor Merchant as the recipient of AFF's Outstanding Television Writer Award, a distinction awarded annually to recognize excellence in the television industry. Merchant certainly demonstrates excellence, not only from his impressive collection of awards and accolades, but also through his various titles, roles, and hats, including actor, stand-up comedian, writer, director, and producer, thereby cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile talents in TV and film. Barbara Morgan sat down with Merchant during the 2022 Austin Film Festival for an in-depth conversation on both his creative process and career, eager to hear more on Merchant's practice of crafting relatable characters, how he found comedic inspiration from drama, and most of all, how he established himself as one of television's leading comedic voices. So sit back and have a laugh as we talk all things comedy with Stephen Merchant. Clips of The Outlaws courtesy of Amazon Studios. Clips of Hello Ladies courtesy of Home Box Office, Inc.
