With the album's reduced commercial clout and declining role in music consumption, a dilemma crops up for all long-established bands involved in the endeavour of making a new LP record. Put simply, why bother? Why toil for four years on a body of work that distils 100 song ideas into ten tracks, spending a fortune in the process, only to see it flash across the charts and then evaporate into the mesh of 100 million songs? It's an existential question for Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue, who told me:“It's sort of madness really, when all the good songs and books have already been written. Who wants to hear what's in my head or what we've created as a band? Does anyone even sit down and listen to an album now? But I think of it in the same way as poets, novelists and filmmakers. It's still worth doing if you feel you can do it well”. Arguably, new albums have been especially challenging for Deacon Blue in part because the band made one of the most accomplished debuts ever, 1987's Raintown. With its themes of growing up in Glasgow, work, money, expectations and dreams, Raintown is as universal a concept as any record and yet it is fundamentally a musical tribute to Glasgow that most Scots are really proud of. It set a high bar for Deacon Blue, and yet the band went on to have acute commercial success with the four albums that followed between 1989 and 1994, rounding the period off with a Greatest Hits compilation (remember them!) Our Town, in 1994. The band then split, and you can't say they didn't quit while they were ahead. They each went on to have their own multi-media career ventures, acting, writing and presenting, effectively avoiding the inevitable mid-career slump of many of their contemporaries. Alas, they came back together in 1999 and the second act has been a classic post limelight affair. A string of lower key albums placed them firmly in the ‘for fans only' vortex of music careers - perfectly sustainable and yet largely forgotten by the mainstream. It hasn't stopped the band hitting creative highs with albums though, notably 2014's A New House and the outstanding City of Love in 2020. But when the journey continues, where do you go next? The answer seems to be ‘full circle, then forward'. New album The Great Western Road arrives on a momentous anniversary for Deacon Blue, it is 40 years since songwriter and frontman Ricky Ross and drummer Dougie Vipond created the group's first incarnation. With the opening title track set in Glasgow, it's more than a nod to their debut (indeed, the title track echoes Raintown's opener Born In A Storm, a ‘Gershwin meets Glasgow' classic). The band reunited with Raintown recording engineer Matt Butler and so were clearly ready to revisit their origins. But as the new album unfolds, so does the metaphor of the band stretching out further and further. The result is a bunch of songs that reflect the sense of expectation of their early work with reflection, perspective and a contented resignation. Classic country songs How We Remember It and Curve of the Line are particular highlights of a mature, grown up pop record. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

It's time to floss like the OG LA boss! He lives by the freeway at incredible costs. From humble beginnings to wheels that was spinning. He showed us all how to hold mass from a quaint overpass. This average looking Joe spread more snow on the streets of LA than Castro could blow. We'll unravel the tale of a down home dude with destiny that dwarfed his decline into darkness. He slid into celebrity status on snow covered streets and sowed the seeds of a societal scourge of rocks for rabbles. All while keeping a profile so low his own mama didn't know. And then up came the prison guard with name so hard, he ruled the billboards with musical awards. Hustlin everyday for that millionaire pay. So hang on chimps as we introduce the real pope of the slopes who outsmarted the dopes. The first memoir by Deacon Blue singer and music icon Ricky Ross. In 1986, Ricky Ross started a full-time career in music, which has lasted for over 35 years. His earlier working life was spent in youth work and teaching in his home city of Dundee, and his adopted home of Glasgow. It was in these two cities where he spent his formative years learning how to write and play songs. Having always written about the people and places who've made an impact on his life, it's no surprise that this is how he has approached Walking Back Home, his first-ever memoir, which takes the listener on a journey from Ricky's childhood to the roller coaster of leading his band Deacon Blue to top of the charts and the band's eventual break-up and his solo career. "I started to write about the years I spent putting the band together, on the first time we ever played in America, and about some of the musical characters I've met along the way. I gave some thought to growing up in suburban Dundee in a family with no record player and no sense that someone like me could, one day, make a record. That's one part of the story. However, I still want to talk about the smell of Born to Run when I first got it home and how I saw the Buzzcocks looking at a Cliff Richard album sleeve in a Dundee Record Shop window. I still want to tell the stories of my grandparents and parents and the woman whose voice was so vulnerable when she got up to sing at our church. For all these years I've told stories. Sometimes these days I also tell them on the radio. I've met some amazing people and their stories need told, too. The first time Deacon Blue ever played Wembley Arena I started to introduce a song only to hear, 'Get on with it' shouted from Row Z. We proceeded with the song, but I often thought I'd quite like to finish that story."

Seven million record sales, twelve UK top 40 singles, two number one albums; the music of Deacon Blue - and that group's singer Ricky Ross - defined much of my childhood. And so it's a total thrill to speak to the Dundee born songwriter on this episode. Ricky has a new solo album, Short Stories, Vol. 2, out now on Cooking Vinyl, a tour coming late September, and his first memoir, Walking Back Home: Deacon Blue and Me, published by Headline, out now too. And it's the latter which we principally talk about today. I'm writing a book too. I thought it was a good opportunity to push Ricky for some tips. But also – my dad passed away last weekend. He was 81. He'd been sick for ages. It's very sad, I'm very sad, but I've got some peace about it too. But it does come up in the episode because a lot of the conversation is about growing and feeling and all sorts of important life stuff. It wasn't just a pleasure to speak to Ricky, but a sort of tonic too – to speak to someone obviously sensitive, obviously wise, and with one of those soft Scottish accents that can alleviate anxiety with a single vowel.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue over Zoom video! DEACON BLUE recently released Riding on the Tide of Love, which features eightbrand new songs, via earMUSIC. The record is a lockdown-recorded companion to the 2020-released City of Love.Deacon Blue have shared the lyric video for the title track. Watch + listen here. The song is a declaration of love in a time of adversity — the one thing that gets us all through difficult times. Though the lyrics might be dark in parts, the signature harmonies of Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh leave us with an upbeat and hopeful message: the tide of love will keep us afloat. "But I’m living / And I’m breathing / And I'm real/And I'm sliding / And I'm clinging /But you're here/And I'm riding on the tide of love!" "After City of Love was finished, I looked through songs which might have been on the album," shares Ross. "I realized too late how perfectly 'Riding on the Tide of Love' would have fit on the record. These things sometimes happen when you're in the middle of a creative project. However, as fate would have it, we realized that this was a better song for the year we've just been through. It's about optimism in the face of a bad series of events. The world keeps turning and love is still our best and only way out."Riding on the Tide of Love springs from a fertile time in the band's career and serves to extend that rich vein of creative form. "This album is a continuation of City of Love, a companion [record] that we recorded piece by piece, going into the studio one-by-one to record our individual parts. But despite being apart, it's brought us all together, and we hope it will bring you together, too. It was made with love by us, for you, to help with the ride. It's a love song about growing old. Neil Young's Harvest Moon released in 1992 is a nod to the 1970s country rock loved by music blogger Alyson Young. It's also a grown up song about love says singer-songwriter Ricky Ross. How do you make the magic last and how do you keep love alive? People tell their stories about what the song means to them: jazz singer Maureen Washington danced to the song with her late husband. Amanda Legere played it to her premature baby daughter when she went to see her in the ICU. She knows the baby responded to that song. Mary Divine and her husband were serenaded on their wedding anniversary during lockdown. The whole neighbourhood came out to watch a teenage neighbour play Harvest Moon for them. Margy Waller drove to work at the White House on the final days of Bill Clinton's Presidency listening to Harvest Moon because she needed to cry. For her it's a song about loss. She is still touched by it today during the pandemic in what she describes as another period of great loss. Versions include Harvest Moon by Neil Young Cassandra Wilson Maureen Washington Nils Lofgren Neil Young Unplugged Produced by Maggie Ayre Alyson's music blog is Jukeboxtimemachine.com Ricky Ross presents Another Country on BBC Radio Scotland. Maureen Washington is a jazz singer based in British Columbia.
Ricky reflects on his trip to Srebrenica with Remembering Srebrenica, Scotland.

Austin is bleeding profusely from his penis and Ryan wants emails from our female listener(s) about their experience of losing their virginity(s). Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner! Let's be honest everybody, guys are kinda rapey in general, right? Was Gary Webb suicided or did he botch his suicide all by himself? Does the CIA lie to us?! Anderson Cooper worked for the CIA in College and probably still does through Operation Mockingbird. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mockingbird The OSS became the CIA after WWII. The Voodoo Haitians are the only successful slave revolution of The People against their own Gov't in recorded history. https://library.brown.edu/haitihistory/5.html The CIA constantly undermines the FBI by promoting drug trafficking and denying them from investigating. Are we are ALL secretly working for the CIA? Were you a Police Officer or in a Police Academy? We want to hear about your experiences @ theryanokeoganshow@gmail.com or (910)556-9420. Watch Kill the Messenger on Netfrix - https://youtu.be/VW4XO-52ubE and watch the True Crime Doc on YouTube - https://youtu.be/kn10itGL5iM Jeremy Renner, Clint Barton, and Gary Webb are all similar levels of looking alike and distrusting the government, and it's kind of awesome. The CIA put the '99 lives' cheat codes in Contra. Austin explains how the Iran-Contra situation was a smokescreen from the CIA allowing Contras to traffic cocaine into south L.A. and other places in America as early as 1981 in order to raise money to re-revolutionize Nicaragua. The CIA is pushing the 'Epstein Didn't Kill Himself' meme because they're flaunting it now. Oliver North and "Freeway" Ricky Ross are the smoking guns in the drug trafficking cover-up. Call in and tell us what it's like to do cocaine. All drugs should probably be legal and prohibition creates black markets that punish the poor and promote the rich, every time. Clare Balding is joined by singers Ricky Ross and Lorraine McIntosh of the band Deacon Blue to walk one of their favourite coastal routes in Fife. Starting at Elie they walk along the beach passing through the village of St Monan's ending in the picturesque fishing town of Pittenweem. Ricky and Lorraine have been married for over thirty years and perform together as part of the band, as well as having their own careers in broadcasting and acting. They say the secret to their enduring relationship is doing things together as a couple and sharing the same interests, one of which is walking. One of their favourite areas to walk is the East Neuk in Fife reputed to have some of the driest sunniest weather in the UK because of its sheltered position between the Rivers Forth and Tay. Producer: Maggie Ayre
In the arena of bullsh*t, reality hits when the Kings of R&B have R&B jokes, when every rapper is a thug until shit gets real, when someone questions if Millmatic knows Bobby Womack and when we got sexual chocolate on some spoken word, poetry sh*t. We're going to need our listeners to run the record on the greatest comedians and comic movies of all time. Sucka Free had a NFL Game Day outing and boy is the sports racism blatent. 365 everywhere you go...COPS, but what about being eloquently brown AF? oh and we'll gt to Kareem Hunt by the end of this, but, We're healing stab wounds on this episode and tons of people make the epic Pick Your Poison table, criminals, gangsters, the real Ricky Ross, the IRVZ and the Unicorn Detective Agency, of which will be seated and dining at the SUCKA FREE DINER BREAKFAST EXTRAVAGANZA! The Beer of the week was unbelievably different, taste like nothing we've experienced, and sounds like gay porn. In the most talked about episode yet, The Radio Boys (C.Truth, Kev Lawrence) spoke to the real Rick Ross. Freeway Ricky did not side step any topic and let it all hang out on: having the athletic skill to be a star tennis player, meeting the Williams sisters when they were 10 yrs old and spotting their potential then, getting set up by a CIA operative, being illiterate, growing up in the neighborhood of Compton where the crips were founded and other rival gangs battled, becoming one of the most notorious drug traffickers in the U.S. after having an anti-drug mind set, investing in businesses & property, being used as a pawn for the US government to fund the Iran Contra war, how journalist Gary Webb helped expose the truth about his case, the metamorphosis while in prison, accepting responsibility for all wrong he has done, his views on the rapper Rick Ross, his mentoring program and upcoming film being written by Nick Cassavetes (Blow/Face Off). This is a hefty must listen to episode that’s stacked to the max. Also find out: why he wants to meet with President Obama and how Leonardo DiCaprio & Mark Wahlberg are trying to get at him. Episode #49 "All Things Soccer"If the title hasn't given it away this episode is primarily based on soccer. The most popular sport in the wold. Now that we're almost two weeks removed from 2018 World Cup and the dust has almost settled. I had to ask my friend Ricky Ross to join me on this episode of LWS. Ricky Ross knows more about this sport then most people. It was fun having Ricky teach me a different side of soccer and talk about all the future hall of fame players currently dominating the sport. Going into episode #49 I knew very little about soccer. So here's a little shout out to Ricky Ross for practically carrying this weeks episode. Hope you all enjoy See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

BlazinRy Radio host Ryan Holmes welcomes the quintessential American Gangster, former drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ross. Freeway Rick has been the subject of such recent films as Kill the Messenger and Freeway: A Crack in the System, as well as an upcoming Nick Cassavettes-directed biopic starring Nick Cannon as the drug lord. Enjoy this encore episode as Freeway Rick tells Ryan in a brutally honest interview the reason he put himself at the center of America's crack cocaine epidemic, the first moment he experienced regret over his involvement in the deterioration of inner-city communities across the country, his (unbeknownst-to-him) involvement in the Iran-Contra Affair during the Reagan Administration, and exactly why he thinks Gary Webb, the journalist who exposed the CIA, is dead today. Ultimately, Ross' story is one of selfish actions with dire consequences, an alternate pursuit of the American Dream, envy, incarceration, corruption, forgiveness, and redemption. Take a listen to this podcast. It's a journey you'll never forget.
