In this episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, architectural historian at the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, Dr Alistair Fair discusses his latest book, Building Modern Scotland: A Social and Architectural History of the New Towns, 1947–1997, which he co-authored with Lynn Abrams, Kat Breen, Miles Glendinning, Diane Watters and Valerie Wright, and published with Bloomsbury in February this year.Scotland's new towns—Glenrothes, Cumbernauld, Livingston, Irvine, and East Kilbride—were bold experiments in urban planning, designed to provide modern, thriving communities in the wake of the Second World War. We discuss the why and how of New Townism, and beyond the concrete and masterplans, reflect on what these places meant and how they shaped the daily life of the people who lived in them. In the end, as always, did they work? And what do they suggest about the contemporary and future of urban growth?Alistair & Co's extensive research and storytelling uncovers the vision, politics, and lived experiences behind these remarkable developments. Have a good listen – Alistair is a wonderful communicator – and find out.Alistair is on Instagram, and above at work. Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! There's lots to talk about on this week's show. Steve and Steve have had a good week in the markets and are dying to talk about it. It's no secret that the London Stock Exchange has been struggling to attract listings lately with the likes of Arm, TUI, and Flutter looking elsewhere. But the FCA has some ideas for how to change this. A raft of measures have been announced including removing market cap restrictions and relaxing profitability requirements, but will any of them work? Steve and Steve have some ideas. Earnings season in the US has kicked off and – as usual – Steve W has been looking at the banking sector. Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and J.P. Morgan have all reported earnings with more to come. Despite beats almost across the board, the stocks are all down. But is a rise in investment banking revenue something for shareholders to get excited about over the next few months and years? Terry Smith has been catching investors up on the progress of Fundsmith's results. The UK's Warren Buffett has been underperforming the S&P 500 – but he has a good reason. Not owning Nvidia has led a lot of investors to miss out on some spectacular returns. But Steve D is doubtful that this is the only reason for the fund's underperformance over the last year. A.J. Barr is a stock we haven't spoken about on the podcast before – at least, not in any depth. But Steve W thinks it might be an interesting opportunity at the moment. As the company embarks on its ‘margin rebuild' programme after a 2022 acquisition, earnings are set to rise. Could that – plus some multiple expansion – generate a 30% return by the end of 2026? No one wants their hometown to be labelled as dismal. But 13 miles outside of Glasgow, Cumbernauld is the only place to have won an award for being ‘Scotland's most dismal town' – twice. Its huge Brutalist shopping centre is an iconic feature of the town's skyline. Yet in 2023, North Lanarkshire Council announced plans to demolish Cumbernauld Town Centre and start again. What makes these plans intriguing is that in 1967 the town won a prestigious prize for its innovative architecture. How does a town centre go from pioneering to demolition in less than 60 years? Cumbernauld was built as part of the post-war New Town movement, which aimed to create new places for people living in overcrowded areas of big cities like Glasgow and London. Their designs were pretty futuristic, featuring new concepts like multi-level indoor shopping centres (Ooooh!). Cumbernauld Town Centre was a bustling mall in its heyday. But nowadays, the corridors are lined with buckets and the penthouse apartments belong to the pigeons. The building has changed since its golden era, how's life changed for the people who moved here as kids?Join History Hun (Anouska Lewis) on her trip to Cumbernauld as she gets lost in the megastructure, speaks to residents who moved here in the New Town's glory days, and visits a community garden in a space that could represent Cumbernauld Town Centre's future…History Hun is on a mission to prove that no hometown is boring. GPs in England and Scotland are trying to do a broadly similar job - they both work within the NHS, yet they have different contracts, different organisational and digital infrastructures and different GP clinical systems. They both face similar challenges in terms of workload, prescribing, sustainability and increased demand. Additional team members like pharmacists, physiotherapists, mental health nurses and ANPs are reshaping the way we organise care. The digital health and social care strategies in both countries are broadly similar with a focus on digital transformation and giving patients increased access to their own records. Today we discuss all of this and more with the Digital and Tech GP Dr Gandalf @drgandalf52 who gives us some advice on meeting all of these challenges and how to use some new tech tools which can help us work more efficiently, like a new tool called Nabla co-pilot which can transcribe and summarise consultations! Our recent SNUG annual conference on the 30th November, was held face to face for the first time in over 3 years, at the Westerwood hotel in Cumbernauld. In this episode we get a taste of the atmosphere at the conference and say hello to some of the attendees. The main focus for many people was the forthcoming GP system change, with every practice now planning a move to Vision over the couple of years. We have edited highlights of a workshop which was really useful in setting out what practices will need to think about before they embark on the task of changing systems, especially important for EMIS practices, who will have to move to a brand-new system, requiring much preparation and re-training. We hear hints and tips on what to do from Robin Cupples, and Dawn Ellis, GP IT facilitation managers with the NSS Re-provisioning team, and Dr Jim Campbell, former GP and clinical advisor to the national team. What you can do now?  Deal with your patients that are registered for patient access; register for the Cegedim elearning; find and replace any local codes; tidy up your user list; think about what third party tools you need to use; and consider data cleansing. Plan ahead for the migration period:  appointment books, data entry and Word / mailmerge templates and searches don't migrate, so those will need to be rebuilt in the new clinical system. Data validation and data mapping will be needed for the first cut of migrated data. Plan for the Read- only period: let the patients know at a suitable time; plan for how clinical notes and prescriptions issued during downtime will be recorded; consider how will you manage when lab results and screen messages are switched off (just before the final cut of your data is taken). Plan for Post migration: there will be training days and webinars. Clinical data will need to be re-entered, including allergies. And we hear from Alex De Franco, the SNUG Business Manger on how she thought the conference went.   Our Passion is Trance & Friends presents Guest Mixes episode 5 by.  BiGGYWAWA -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Bio:   I'm BiggyWaWa, better known as Will from Cumbernauld, Scotland! I've been DJing for 21 years, almost exclusively as a hobbyist with a few gigs in between. Electronic music has been a huge passion of mine for almost since I can remember. Growing up, I lived off compilation albums and mixes before getting my first turntables aged 17 and spending hours and all my spare cash in record stores whenever I got the chance. Time spent at home experimenting with different sounds brought me through many genres which I still love to play today, uploading plenty of sets to house-mixes.com and mixcloud.com along the way.   Fast forward to the start of the pandemic and I began streaming some sets through my phone onto Facebook with the live Scottish sunset in the background as a way to connect with the friends we were all separated from. That grew into starting to play on twitch, getting the chance to play for Anjunafamily LA, where I met Serjey for the first time, and then onto my now firmly adopted online music fam with Trancefamily Canada, North UK Anjunafamily, True North Radio, and Saturo Sounds, each of which has given me friends for life and opportunities I'll always be grateful for. I'm multi-genre and will play virtually anything- usually in the same set- but trance is and will always be my first love.   This set is dedicated to all the tunes that stoked the fire- running up to 2010 before I became a full-on Above & Beyond Anjuna nut after the Group Therapy Album.   www.instagram.com/biggywawa  www.twitch.com/biggywawa  www.mixcloud.com/biggywawa  www.soundcloud.com/biggywawa  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDC1J2Jdp75dMXSAwl7fd5Q  www.facebook.com/biggywawamusic   Tracklist!  Chicane - Saltwater Lucid - I Can't Help Myself (Lucid Vocal Mix) Andy Moor & Adam White pres Whiteroom - The Whiteroom Armin Van Buuren - Communication Pt 3 Matt Darey ft Marcella Woods -Beautiful  Hybrid - If I Survive (Way Out West Remix) The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia (En-Motion Remix) Conjure One - Redemption (Max Graham's Dead Sea Remix) Hi Gate - We're Gonna Work It Out Super8 & Tab - Elektra M.I.K.E. - Sunrise at Palamos 2009 (Gareth Emery Remix) Solarstone - Seven Cities (Solarstone's Atlantis Mix) Schiller - Das Glockenspiel (Humate Remix) Tiesto - Suburban Train System F - Out Of The Blue (2010 Strings Mix) Jurgen Vries feat CMC - The Opera Song (Braverr New World) Faithless feat Zoe Johnston - Crazy English Summer (Hiver & Hammer Remix) Oceanlab - Clear Blue Water (Above & Beyond Club Mix) Gouryella - Walhalla

Chris went to university in Aberdeen, graduated, and then headed for Berlin in 2008. Chris tells us about his early days in Berlin, working in bars, and getting into the improv comedy scene in the city. After two years in the improv scene, Chris decided to spread his wings and to go it alone in stand-up comedy, and has been a regular on the scene for the last ten years. We also find out about ‘The Wandering Barman' persona, the immersive and interactive nature of the act, and where it's heading next. BRIAN CRAWFORD went from playing Football Manager the game to – well – being a football manager. The Larkhall Thistle boss will never forget the chance he got to play in the juniors at 17. And that's why he'll never shy away from giving youth a chance. Brian tells us about life at the oldest continuous club which started out life in the juniors. Then we look back at his own goal-laden playing career, when he was the talk of the game. His strikes for the likes of Carluke and Cumbernauld eventually saw him step up to the seniors with Clyde. But despite being their top striker at Christmas he was still on the bench. We hear why scoring a winner for Stranraer one night saw him lose his job the next day. And how refusing to be subbed before a corner was taken led to him staring at a year out of the game. Plus there's Roache's Roundup and Mark Mackay's Best of the West. The film is set in and around a state secondary school in the Abronhill district of Cumbernauld.Gregory's Girl was ranked No. 30 in the British Film Institute's list of the top 100 British films and No. 29 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 best high school movies.Gregory Underwood (John Gordon Sinclair) is an awkward teenager who plays in his school football team. They are not doing very well, so the coach (Jake D'Arcy) holds a trial to find new players. Dorothy (Dee Hepburn) shows up and, despite the coach's sexist misgivings, proves to be a very good player. She subsequently takes Gregory's place as centre forward, and Gregory in turn replaces his friend Andy (Robert Buchanan) as goalkeeper.Gregory is all for her making the team, as he finds her very attractive. However, he has to compete for her attention with all the other boys who share the same opinion. Gregory initially confides in his best friend Steve (William Greenlees), the most mature of Gregory's circle of friends, and asks him for help in attracting Dorothy. Steve, however, is unable to assist him.Acting on the advice of his precocious 10-year-old sister Madeleine (Allison Forster), he awkwardly asks Dorothy out on a date. She accepts, but Dorothy's friend, Carol (Caroline Guthrie), shows up at the rendezvous instead and informs Gregory that something had come up; Dorothy will not be able to make it. He is disappointed, but Carol talks him into taking her to the chip shop. When they arrive, she hands him off to another friend, Margo (Carol Macartney), and leaves. By then, Gregory is rather confused, but goes for a walk with the new girl. On their stroll, they encounter a waiting Susan (Clare Grogan), another of Dorothy's friends, and Margo leaves. Susan confesses that it was all arranged by her friends, including Dorothy. She explains, "It's just the way girls work. They help each other."They go to the park and talk. At the date's end, Gregory is more than pleased with Susan, and the two kiss numerous times on his doorstep before calling it a night and arranging a second date. Madeleine, who had been watching from the window, quizzes him on his date and calls him a liar when he claims he did not kiss Susan.Gregory's friends, Andy and Charlie (Graham Thompson), are even more inept with girls but see Gregory at various times with three apparent dates, and are envious of his new success. They try to hitchhike to Caracas, where Andy has heard the women greatly outnumber the men, but fail at that as well.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/100things)

'It captures the awkwardness of youth so well…it makes you feel like you're invincible.' On this episode, Anna is joined by film academic Lewis Kellett to talk about Gregory's Girl, Bill Forsyth's much loved second feature film from 1980. The charming romantic comedy follows Cumbernauld high school student Gregory, as he tries to win the heart of Dorothy, the new star of the school football team and the girl of his dreams. Lewis hadn't seen the film before, and Anna just can't stop talking about it. Join them as they discuss the awkwardness of adolescent first love, dating in a small northern town, how the film laid the foundations for future youth culture on screen, and the power of reminiscence and nostalgia. We talk about life before Gordon came to Iona for a good portion of the episode, and then, roughly half way through we come on to his life on Iona, the various jobs that he’s had over the years, and touch into the nature of life in a small community and touchingly, the kindness of others. My wife and our dog make an appearance towards the end of the episode, so that’s the noise you can hear in the background. I’m delighted to say that we’ll be having a What We Do in the Winter Live event on at Dervaig Village Hall from seven thirty to nine thirty, this Saturday the 7th of March 2020. It’s free to come along, if you’re about do come and join us, we’d love to see you. It’s going to be recorded for release as a podcast in the coming weeks, so do come along and take part. Rather than talking to one person we’re going to be looking at a few topics, which I’m going to ask people to comment on from the audience. I’ve got a couple of plants already willing to speak, but everyone’s welcome to chip in. The topics are: Movies Made on Mull; Dervaig Village Hall through the ages; Delivery Vans and – Local Characters. I’m kind of hoping that we get derailed though and go off in directions that weren’t anticipated, so we’ll see what happens! Hi and welcome to the very first episode of Scots Spill the Beans. I'm Kim McAllister and I’m going to prove to you that Scotland is more than tartan castles and whisky glens. Come on in – and hear the secrets from the Scots! I’ve got some cracking people lined up for this six-part series. No messing around – we’re starting with a star of Outlander. Craig McGinlay was working for a Scottish Premier League football team when he went for an audition to be in a whisky ad. It turned out to be a Guy Ritchie-directed epic starring David Beckham. Was it his bushy beard that got him the part? Or his Scottish charm? I’ll let you decide... Show notes: Craig references many Scottish places in this podcast: Cumbernauld - a small 'new town' just outside Glasgow Condorrat - a former village, now part of the 'new town' just outside Glasgow Govan - an area in south Glasgow with a history of deprivation which has recently been regenerated Gleneagles - a five star luxury resort in Perthshire The Blythswood Hotel - a five star luxury hotel in the centre of Glasgow Paisley - home of the 'Paisley pattern', a cathedral town west of Glasgow Anstruther Chippy - multi-award-winning 'Anstruther Fish Bar and Restaurant' in Fife Glencoe - a glen with volcanic origins in the Highlands of Scotland Elie - a seaside town in Fife Fort William - Highland town known as the 'gateway to Ben Nevis' which is Scotland's highest mountain RebelRebel - barber in Finnieston, Glasgow

The Celtic Graves Society are proud to announce a ceremony to commemorate the final resting place of the legendary ANDY McATEE At Kilsyth Cemetery, Howe Road, Kilsyth, G65 0TAat 12:00 noon on Saturday 28th February 2015 Speakers at the event shall include: Jim Craig, Lisbon Lion & Celtic Graves Society Patron Tom Boyd, former Celtic Captain David W Potter, Author and Celtic Historian A blessing of the grave will be conducted by Father Sullivan of The Holy Cross Church, Croy. Fans favourite Andy McAtee represented Celtic for 14 years. A frighteningly quick player, Andy was known as a player with a cannonball shot who could score goals from impossible angles and as a match winner. The Cumbernauld born outside right is another Celtic player who comes from a mining background. His Celtic career was interrupted by World War 1, where his occupation as a miner allowed him to carry on playing for Celtic. During the period he played in the league title winning teams of 1914-17. He later served with typical bravery and heroism as a gunner for the 29th Division where he fought in the Italian Alps and the Somme. We lost him mostly for the first half of 1918. As a footballer, McAtee was simply a match winner who was adored by the Celtic faithful, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest wingers the club has ever had. Having played 438 times for Celtic, scoring 75 goals winning 5 Scottish League Championships and 4 Scottish Cup winners medals, Andy McAtee is a true Celtic great. The Celtic Graves Society would like to invite all attendees to a "Question & Answer" event which will take place at The Curling Stone, High Craigends, Kilsyth at 1pm. Attending this even will be: Lisbon Lion Jim Craig, former Celtic Captain Tom Boyd and local Celt Pat McCluskey For more information on the Celtic Graves Society please visit: www.celticgraves.com where donations to the work of the Celtic Graves Society can also be made. Afterhours Podcast - Mixed by Kenny Campbell & Guests

Originally broadcast on Joseph McGeechan's 'Systematic Process' show on Fnoob. Not going to lie, when Joseph asked me for this mix I was pretty pleased with myself. For those who don't know, Joseph was half of the BCR Boys, ran Backwater Community Records and Berlin Consumer Records. He's released on Perc Trax and Synewave along with remixes for many other labels. And he's been remixed by Ancient Methods. Ancient Methods! He has played in Berghain and regularly plays in the mighty Tresor. He's also managed to escape Cumbernauld and now resides in Berlin. Jammy...Check Joseph out here @joseph_mcgeechanSo yeah, this mix was a big deal for me!It's probably the most 4/4 techno mix I've done in a while, only a couple of broken beat tracks, and also Morbid Angel and Joy Division. But enough rambling. Outside their comfort zone, this week David and Liam attend a house party in the far off land of Cumbernauld.  The two have a great time as they forget to pick up a friend, interrupt an Anne Summers party, fall over dogs and get poked by a vibrator.  They have many exciting conversations with the other party guests involving playing piano on somebody’s arm, getting sunburned and being suggested erotic toys.  Shenanigans continues as the group argue with an adolescent about his age, leave cider in the bathroom, give a speech about gangs and shout abuse at a drunk man.  Also find out if one of the group where lucky enough to win a raffle and something new to play with.  The question of the week leads to discussion of hidden DVD’s and your dying wish.  All this week on the We Killed The Radio Star Podcast! We’d like to thank music.mevio.com for providing music for the podcast.  Please check out www.wekilledtheradiostar.com and follow our twitter page - @wekilledstar.  The song this week was You Took Me Home by Axel Schneider!
