Friends of the Rosary: Yesterday, we commemorated Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces. Jesus Christ is the Author of all graces, and Mary mediated to the world when she agreed to be the human mother of God.  Mary, Advocate for people of God and Mother of Jesus as Coredemptrix, takes the petitions of her earthly children, especially in times of difficulties, and brings them through her maternal intercession before her Son and our Lord Jesus. The Mediatrix performs this task in intimate union with the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier. Vatican II refers to Mary as a "mother to us in the order of grace " (Lumen Gentium, n. 62) and several twentieth century popes have officially taught the doctrine of Mary as Mediatrix of all graces, quoting the words of St Bernard: "It is the will of God that we obtain all favours through Mary." In the Old Testament, the Queen Mother brought the petitioned needs of the people of Israel to the throne of her son the king (cf. 1 Kings 2:19). Now Mary is the new Queen Mother and Advocate in the new Kingdom of her Son, who brings the petitioned needs of the people of God to the throne of her glorious Son, Christ the King, particularly in our present difficult times. The province’s eight stateside friaries are located in Denver, Blackforest, and Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Lawrence, Kansas and San Antonio, Texas. Usually found in the poorer sections of towns and cities, the Capuchins have a special charism for working among the poor and marginalized and taking assignments that others refuse. “When times were at their worst and help was sorely needed, in places that were abandoned and where no one else would go, there you will find the Capuchin.” ~ Pope Pius XI What is a Capuchin Franciscan? In the 16th century, a group of Franciscans were inspired to live the Franciscan lifestyle in a more radical manner, returning to the original emphasis on prayer and poverty. These men broke away from the Franciscans and began a reform movement which stressed the priority of contemplative prayer and a more rigorous austerity. Wearing habits with large hoods, they soon garnered the name cappucio, the Italian word for “hood.” The Capuchins received approval of their way of life and were recognized as an official, independent branch of the Franciscans in 1525 in the papal bull Religionis Zellus. Mariology –Part 1 Mariology is the theological name given to the doctrinal study of Mary the mother of Jesus.  If one was to ask the general public for a defining person, inextricably and inseparably linked to Roman Catholicism, without a shadow of a doubt, the overwhelming response would not be Jesus Christ but instead, that of His mother Mary!!  As biblical students of God’s Word, any study of the New Testament is not complete without making mention of Mary.  Indeed, as one opens the New Testament, immediately one is confronted with the person of Mary in the events that record the nativity of Jesus Christ.  However, Roman Catholic theology maintains that Mary was not only the biological mother of Jesus, the vehicle used by God to bring His Son into this world.  But rather that Mary remained a perpetual virgin; that Mary is free from original sin and at the end of her life on earth, she was taken up into heaven where she continues perpetually to be the mother of God and Queen of Heaven.  Catholics believe Mary to be Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix playing a role alongside her Son not only in His earthly ministry but even now in His heavenly ministry in the salvation of mankind!  In this tenth teaching part, we shall begin to look at the claims of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Mary and weigh them against the Bible!  This is to be the first of a two part teaching comparing the Roman Catholic Mary vs the Mary of Scripture!!
