The Wild Brothers grew up where no roads, no hospitals, and no government existed. Hudson and Morgan Wild spent 17 years in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia, living among the Wano people, an animistic tribe of 1,500 gripped by fear of evil spirits, tribal warfare, and dark spiritual practices. Their parents landed by helicopter with a Bible and a burden. What followed is one of the most extraordinary missionary stories of our generation. The accounts they carry from those years sound like something out of the book of Acts.Neighbors watching demons enter their home. A meteor blazing through the jungle canopy the night before a pivotal Bible teaching. A deadly snake bite followed by a prayer that should not have worked but did. A vine suspended in midair by nothing visible. The Wild Brothers unpack the collision between the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness with the kind of firsthand authority that only comes from living on the front lines. For Papuans, sago is not just a stomach filler. It is the foundation of fair culture that blends with the history and identity of man on his land. However, the shadow of lifestyle changes is now fuelling concern: will sago be excluded from Papuan people's lives?

When we talk about improving education in remote or indigenous communities, we usually start with the wrong questions. We ask: what's missing? What needs to be fixed? But what if the problem isn't a lack of education but a failure to recognise the rich opportunities for education that are already there? In this episode, Dr Murni Sianturi challenges some of the most deeply held assumptions about schooling, knowledge, and what it means to learn. Her research in West Papua pushes back on three pervasive myths: that indigenous parents don't care about their children's education, that learning only happens in formal schools, and that indigenous communities are problems to be solved rather than partners to be heard. Children in West Papua face additional challenges around their identity and how to navigate their Indonesian selves with their indigenous identity. At the heart of Murni's work is a deceptively simple argument — that education works best when it's built on real relationships, when schools treat families as partners rather than outsiders, and when children are allowed to explore all aspects of their identity so they know who they are and where they're going. This is a conversation about West Papua, but it's really about something much bigger: whose knowledge counts, and who gets to decide how children are educated. As an Indigenous scholar and lecturer in education with over six years of professional academic experience, Dr Murni Sianturi has built a strong track record in leading research. She completed her PhD at the University of New South Wales with a prestigious Scientia PhD Scholarship. Currently, she leads a competitively funded Australia–Indonesia international research project with Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), funded by the Indonesian Government and co-funded by Excelsia University College. She has shared her expertise in Indigenous education and educational technology through invited talks, keynotes, plenary sessions, and international conference presentations. Her publications include two books and 21 peer-reviewed articles, seven of which appear in top-tier journals such as Pedagogy, Culture & Society and Education and Information Technologies, contributing to scholarship that influences both research and practice. In 2026, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Dr Clara Siagian from the University of College London, Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, and Dr Tito Ambyo from RMIT.

In this warm and deeply moving episode, host Chetana sits down with Rachel — a mother, visionary, and midwifery student from Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia — who turned her own transformative birth experience into a mission to bring gentle, dignified birth care to one of the most underserved regions in the world.Rachel shares how a VBAC at Bumi Sehat in Bali — under the care of the legendary Ibu Robin Lim — changed the entire course of her life. Returning home to Papua, she and her husband Ronald built AHBS (Angel Hiromi Bumi Sehat Papua) from the ground up: starting with just a plot of land, moving their own furniture into the building, and slowly gathering the equipment, midwives, and mentorship needed to open their doors in December 2019.This episode is a love letter to the women of Papua — and to everyone who believes that every mother, no matter where she lives, deserves to be treated like a goddess. In this episode we cover:Rachel's first C-section, and the longing for a normal birth that led her to Robin Lim in BaliWhat a VBAC at Bumi Sehat felt like — and why it changed everythingThe founding of Angel Hiromi Bumi Sehat (AHBS) - the only midwife-led birth center in PapuaThe role of Augustine (Maggie) in bringing gentle birth philosophy to Papua — and why her six-month visit left a lasting imprintWhy Rachel decided to enroll in midwifery school herself — after her own staff told her she "knew nothing"The ongoing challenge of training midwives in gentle birth when mainstream protocols dominateWhat changed in the birth rooms after Chetana's visit — upright births, birthing balls, dim lighting, and mothers who don't want to go homeRachel's vision for AHBS: a third floor, an operating room for gentle cesareans, a dedicated training space, and an ultrasound roomHow AHBS is funded — and what continued support looks likeResources & Links:

Rassela Malinda – Papua, development and politics from below In his inauguration speech in October 2024 President Prabowo Subianto reiterated his campaign pledge to “achieve food security in the shortest possible time”. He was not the first Indonesian president to make such a declaration. For Jokowi's administration too and now Prabowo's, West Papua occupies a central place in its ambitions to achieve both food and energy security, with the rollout of massive sugarcane and palm oil plantations to meet increasing biofuel targets, as well as mega rice production. These plans involve the clearing and development of hundreds of thousands of hectares of forests, the customary lands of the indigenous peoples of these regions. Resource extraction at such scale by the state and the corporations is backed by military force, often rendering the indigenous communities helpless to respond. But some are fighting back. So just what recourse do the customary owners of the forests of Papua have to resist and take a stand, in the face of such powerful forces? In this week's episode Jemma chats with Rassela Malinda, a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne who lived and worked with indigenous communities in Papua and whose research gives us rare insights into their struggles from below. She previously worked with the NGO Yayasan Pusaka Bentala Rakyat whose report she draws on in this podcast. In 2026, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, Tito Ambyo from RMIT and Dr Clara Siagian from University College, London. Episode Notes On the 25 of September, 1968, Phil Masters and Stan Dale were trekking through the Seng Valley in what is now Papua, Indonesia, attempting to spread the gospel to the Yali people. As their families waited for a scheduled report about their progress, they learned that a band of Yali warriors had misunderstood the men's attempt to greet them as an act of aggression. In a narrow gorge, a hail of arrows propelled the two men into the presence of the Lord. Eight years ago we released a conversation on YouTube with Phil Masters' wife, Phyllis, and their daughter, Crissie. In honor of Women's History Month, we re-release the audio from that conversation here so that you may hear the powerful story of how God worked in their lives following those harrowing events. https://us.worldteam.org/go Find out more at https://rewritten.pinecast.co

The odyssey reaches new heights as Brian Patterson shares some of the strangest and most profound encounters ever documented on the show. From a North Carolina camper who experienced unexplainable visions of an ancient forest to an Oregon mother whose lost daughter was safely returned by a gentle, hair-covered giant, these accounts push beyond simple sightings into territory that challenges everything we think we know about these creatures. The podcast also faces its greatest crisis when a retired biology professor's elaborate hoax nearly destroys everything Brian has built. The fallout is devastating, but with Daniel's unwavering support, Brian rebuilds stronger than ever with rigorous new verification procedures that earn the community's trust back. The story goes global as witnesses from Tibet, the Congo Basin, Papua New Guinea, and Siberia share encounters that mirror North American reports in stunning detail. A Lakota elder speaks of the Big Man as ancient guardians of the wild places. A Stanford primatologist risks her career to validate the evidence. And the Sasquatch Odyssey community grows into a worldwide network of researchers, witnesses, and believers united by shared experience. As the show hits its five hundredth episode, Brian finally tells his own story in full for the first time. But there's no time to rest. New thermal evidence and a late-night expedition deep into the backcountry deliver the most compelling footage yet captured. Episode 348 Thought extinct for 6,000 years, two marsupial species have been discovered alive in New Guinea. Biologists have found a new genus of marsupial glider and the Pygmy Long-fingered Possum on a small Western part of the island. One biologist said this discovery was “more important than finding a living Thylacine in Tasmania”. Host Rowan Hooper is joined by Tim Flannery of the Australian Museum in Sydney, who led the team that confirmed the discovery. He tells us all about these quirky and cute creatures, one of which is held up as sacred by some Indigenous communities - who won't even utter its name in public. Learn about the glider's habit of forming monogamous relationships and its gardening prowess. And discover why the long-fingered possum's finger is so long. Other key players in this research are Professor Kris Helgen, multiple researchers from the University of Papua - and some of the local villagers. On today's episode, we listen to speeches from a protest held on 20th October last year, commemorating a year of the Prabowo-Gibran government. Melbourne Bergerak is a collective of Indonesian students, workers, activists and allies standing with the people's struggle back home and seeing themselves as part of a transnational network of resistance. Bergerak in Bahasa means ‘to move', or ‘in motion'. We will first listen to Alma from Scrip – the Solidarity Committee for Rakyat Indonesia & Papua and the Socialist Youth Group Indonesia, and she will be outlining the current issues being faced by Indonesians today. This will be followed by a speech by the emcee of the rally, Jeslin, further expanding on why the protest has been called and the work that needs to be done. We will then listen to international student Riza, highlighting the failures of the ruling class and the oligarchs. Finally, we hear from the Melbourne Bergerak choir, sharing a series of resistance songs as well as poetry in Bahasa Indonesia.
Bangkitlah, Pemuda Indonesia. Dunia sedang menunggu gagasan besarmu.

A faint orange hand stencil on the wall of a cave in Indonesia just became the oldest art known to science. The art, made by splattering ochre over a hand, had been painted over by subsequent generations and was only preserved because moisture combined with the limestone of the cave to form a protective layer on top. The finding strengthens the picture that humans migrated via Borneo, Sulawesi and Papua to reach Australia at least 65,000 years ago. As church bells tolled around the world welcoming the birth of the Mermaid, the solemn atmosphere in the mountainous Papua province felt different. For people in the heart of this Cenderawasih earth, Christmas is not just an extravaganza, but a reflection amid limitations and an uncertain security situation.
In 1961, 23-year-old Michael Rockefeller – heir to one of America's wealthiest families and son of future Vice President Nelson Rockefeller – disappeared without a trace in the remote swamps of Dutch New Guinea (now West Papua). While collecting primitive art from the Asmat people, his boat capsized in treacherous waters. He tied gas cans to his body and swam toward shore, famously saying, "I think I can make it."He was never seen again. For decades, the official story was drowning. But persistent rumors – backed by journalist investigations, eyewitness accounts from Asmat villagers, and books like Carl Hoffman's Savage Harvest – point to a far darker fate: ritual killing and cannibalism as revenge in a culture built around headhunting and sacred violence. In this episode, we dive deep into the mystery: the colonial clashes that set the stage, the Asmat's complex worldview, the exhaustive searches, cover-up allegations, and the chilling evidence that Michael may have been speared, beheaded, and consumed in a ceremonial act.Was it tragedy, murder, or something lost in cultural collision? Join me for this unfiltered exploration of one of history's most haunting unsolved disappearances.▶️ *[WORK WITH ME]* https://RobbJarrett.net▶️ *FREE* Personal Brand Starter Kit :: https://www.medialabb.net/brandkit*[SUBSCRIPTIONS I RECOMMEND]*ABOBE CREATIVE SOFTWARE - VIDIQ (AI Creation and SEO) - https://vidiq.com/robbjarrett Motion Array (Assets) - Envato (Assets) - OPENART (AI Creation Tools)BEACONS: https://beacons.ai/signup?c=robbjarrett*[PRODUCTS I RECOMMEND]*SM7B Microphone - https://amzn.to/47AuKREMV7+ Microphone - https://amzn.to/3V7LRmABLUE YETI Microphone - https://amzn.to/3V7LRmAOBSBOT Webcam - https://amzn.to/4mcWhMFDJI Action Cam - https://amzn.to/3V44gk7DJI OSMO Gimbal - https://amzn.to/3V44gk7NEEWER Lights - https://amzn.to/4pfvMJe

Send us a Text Message about the podcastA five-day trek, a river that swallows missteps, and a video call that saves a mother and baby—this is what frontline HIV care looks like in Papua, Indonesia. We sit down with Dr. Agnela “Iggy” Chingwaro, an infectious disease physician from Zimbabwe, whose work braids medical expertise with faith, cultural humility, and stubborn hope. Her story exposes the hard truths behind late testing, the fear of national registration, and the maze of more than 300 local languages that shape how people understand illness, trust, and treatment. We unpack the crucial difference between HIV and AIDS, why “undetectable” means suppressed rather than cured, and how that nuance can make or break adherence. Dr. Iggy contrasts Africa's evolving HIV response with Papua's current challenges, where stigma keeps many away until opportunistic infections like TB and meningitis take hold. She details how government-supplied antiretrovirals, TB, and leprosy drugs still need community bridges—portable diagnostics, trained local educators, and clinics willing to meet people where they are. You'll hear how her team trains traditional midwives to screen pregnant women, uses telemedicine to coach emergency care, and partners with pilots and pastors to reach mountainside villages. The conversation turns deeply human: the adoption of a child orphaned by AIDS, the refusal of ambulance drivers to transport patients due to fear, and the practical ways to dismantle myths about transmission. We also shine a light on the “forgotten generation”—youth facing rising HIV rates alongside alcohol and drug abuse—and the vision for a safe, youth-friendly center that offers counseling, education, and dignity. This is global health at eye level: compassionate, persistent, and built on trust. If this moved you, help us grow the impact: subscribe, leave a rating, and share with a friend. “Indonesia has the potential to lead in eco-tourism, in cultural heritage and in Muslim-friendly tourism... but it tries to promote everything all at once, which dilutes the message.” Beautiful, vast and complex, Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago nation, and home to the planet's fourth-largest population. But tourism is heavily concentrated in Bali, which recorded 45% of inbound arrivals to Indonesia in 2024. Meanwhile, Indonesia lags behind Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam for visitor arrivals, attracting 13.1 million visitors in 2024, while generating more than 1 billion domestic trips. So why does it underperform for inbound tourism? This week, Gary is joined by Bali-based travel executive Nur Wulan T, who has worked for leading travel-tech players and airlines, including Garuda, Traveloka, Tiket.com and STAAH, and is a speaker on tourism and hospitality topics. We discuss the diverse impacts of Indonesia's infrastructure deficit and high domestic airfares. Plus, we asses the mixed progress of the 5 Super Priority Destinations - Lake Toba, Borobudur, Labuan Bajo, Mandalika and Likupang - and Bali's long-touted second airport. Wulan also explains the untapped potential of Sumba and Papua, the lessons to be learned from other Asian countries that are pushing creative boundaries in Muslim tourism, and areas for improvement in destination marketing.
You may not always wake up and wonder, "What is God doing today in Papua, Indonesia?" But He hasn't forgotten. In fact, God is ministering in the eastern-most part of this huge nation of 17,000 islands through believers like Devi and her mother, Esther, and by using programs of Bible League International to equip Christians to grow and to share the Gospel.Join host Michael Woolworth and his guest, Romi (last name withheld for security purposes), as Romi recalls his recent trip to this Asian country.
