fWotD Episode 3319: Siege of Hennebont Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 6 June 2026, is Siege of Hennebont. The siege of Hennebont took place between late May and late June 1342 when the forces of Charles of Blois conducted an unsuccessful siege of the fortified port of Hennebont, commanded by Joanna of Montfort. The conflict was a part of the Breton Civil War, a dynastic dispute between two claimants to the Duchy of Brittany which had broken out the previous year. A complicating factor was the pre-existing Hundred Years' War between France and England. Philip VI of France was supporting Charles of Blois, his nephew; Edward III of England had promised military assistance to Joanna, the wife of the rival claimant, John of Montfort. A truce between France and England was in place when the siege started, but it expired in June.Charles's French army overran eastern Brittany and captured John of Montfort. Joanna took up the cause and concentrated her resources in Hennebont. In late May 1342 Charles moved on the town. On arrival, part of his army advanced against orders and attacked some of the town's defenders who were formed up outside its gate. More troops were pulled into this fight before the French were pushed back in a disorderly retreat. The Montfortists pursued, inflicting many casualties and burning the French camp. Two days later the French launched a series of better-planned assaults, but all were repulsed. The main French force moved on, leaving a detachment to attempt to starve the town into surrender. In late June, after a small English force had reinforced the town by sea, this too left. In July Charles was strongly reinforced and returned; the Montfortists abandoned Hennebont and redeployed further west, hoping for English reinforcements. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Saturday, 6 June 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Siege of Hennebont on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

Childlike Trust and the Path to Holiness Today's homily reflects on the message of Our Lady of Fátima apparitions and its enduring relevance for the modern world. The homily emphasizes that in the midst of the turmoil of 1917, during the First World War, Heaven chose not worldly leaders but three humble shepherd children to receive Mary's message. We are reminded that childlike trust and openness to God are essential for entering the Kingdom of Heaven. The central themes of the homily include praying the Rosary daily for peace, offering penance and repentance for sinners, and cultivating devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. True Devotion to Mary Must Come from the Heart, and … Drawing heavily from the teachings of Saint Louis de Montfort, the homily explains that true devotion to Mary must come from the heart, be rooted in trust, strive toward holiness, remain consistent through hardships, and move beyond self-interest into a genuine relationship with Mary that leads souls to Jesus Christ. The Gospel passage from Gospel of Luke is presented as confirmation that Mary's greatness lies in her perfect obedience to the Word of God, making her the model disciple for all Christians. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Art Work Song of the Angels: French Painter: William Adolphe Bouguereau: 1881

What is the Rosary—and where did it actually come from?In this episode of FACTS, Stephen Boyce and Pat May break down the real history behind one of the most misunderstood devotions in Christianity. Was the Rosary invented in the Middle Ages? Did Saint Dominic really receive it in a vision? And how do the The Gospel According to Luke, early monastic prayer, and centuries of Christian tradition all come together to form what we know today? We walk through the development step-by-step—from the Desert Fathers and repetitive prayer, to the formation of the Hail Mary, to the rise of the mysteries, and the global spread of the Rosary through figures like Pope Pius V and Saint Louis de Montfort. This isn't surface-level history. This is the making of the Rosary. If you'd like to donate to our ministry or be a monthly partner that receives newsletters and one on one discussions with Dr. Stephen Boyce, here's a link: https://give.tithe.ly/?formId=6381a2ee-b82f-42a7-809e-6b733cec05a7#Rosary #ChurchHistory #Catholic #FACTSPodcast #StephenBoyce #PatMay

St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, Priest (Optional Memorial)
Friends of the Rosary,Today, Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Tuesday, is the feast of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673-1716), whose life is inseparable from his efforts to promote genuine devotion to Mary.Totus tuus (completely yours) was his personal motto; Karol Wojtyla chose it as his episcopal motto, too.Born in the Breton village of Montfort, near Rennes (France), Louis was a diocesan priest who preached throughout western France, ministered to the poor, and led a simple life, which sometimes got him into trouble with church authorities. In his preaching, which attracted thousands of people back to the faith, Father Louis recommended frequent, even daily, Holy Communion (not the custom then), and imitation of the Virgin Mary's acceptance of God's will.Louis founded the Missionaries of the Company of Mary (for priests and brothers) and the Daughters of Wisdom, who cared especially for the sick. His two books, The Secret of the Rosary and True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, have become a classic explanation of Marian devotion.Louis died in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sevre, where a basilica has been erected in his honor. He was canonized in 1947.Alleluia! Christ is Risen!Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! April 28th, 2026: St Louis de Montfort's True Devotion to Mary
Send us Fan MailA barefoot missionary priest walks muddy roads with almost nothing, and somehow his message reaches popes, saints, and ordinary families centuries later. That's the kind of spiritual staying power St. Louis Marie de Montfort has, and we're taking you step by step through why his Marian devotion still feels surprisingly practical for daily life.We talk about who de Montfort is, what France is like at the dawn of the eighteenth century, and why his preaching lands like a “revolution of the heart” in a time of spiritual coldness, weak catechesis, and the spread of Jansenism. From there we move into the heart of his teaching from True Devotion to Mary: “to Jesus through Mary” as a real plan for discipleship, not a religious catchphrase. We unpack what “true devotion” means as an interior relationship of love, trust, and imitation, and why total consecration is about handing over our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings so Mary can purify them and present them to Christ. You'll also hear us explain the traditional 33-day preparation, the startling phrase “holy slavery of love” as freedom through surrender, and why humility and hiddenness matter so much in Catholic spirituality. We spend time on the Rosary as a school of Marian devotion, Mary's intercession in seasons of struggle, and the role of the Holy Spirit as the hidden fire behind every authentic Marian life.If you're exploring Marian consecration for the first time or trying to return to prayer with new seriousness, come walk this path with us. Full Text of Readings Monday of the Fourth Week of Easter Lectionary: 279 The Saint of the day is Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort's Story Louis's life is inseparable from his efforts to promote genuine devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother of the Church. Totus tuus (“completely yours”) was Louis's personal motto; Pope John Paul II chose it as his episcopal motto. Born in the Breton village of Montfort, close to Rennes, France, as an adult Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort identified himself by the place of his baptism instead of his family name, Grignion. After being educated by the Jesuits and the Sulpicians, he was ordained a diocesan priest in 1700. Soon he began preaching parish missions throughout western France. His years of ministering to the poor prompted him to travel and live very simply, sometimes getting him into trouble with Church authorities. In his preaching, which attracted thousands of people back to the faith, Father Louis recommended frequent, even daily, Holy Communion—not the custom then!—and imitation of the Virgin Mary's ongoing acceptance of God's will for her life. Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort founded the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, for priests and brothers, and the Daughters of Wisdom, who cared especially for the sick. His book True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin has become a classic explanation of Marian devotion. Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort died in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, where a basilica has been erected in his honor. He was canonized in 1947, and his liturgical feast is celebrated on April 28. Reflection Like Mary, Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort experienced challenges in his efforts to follow Jesus. Opposed at times in his preaching and in his other ministries, Louis knew with Saint Paul, “Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Any attempt to succeed by worldly standards runs the risk of betraying the Good News of Jesus. Mary is “the first and most perfect disciple,” as the late Sulpician Father Raymond Brown described her.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/041826.cfmFather Matthew Tomeny, MIC confronts our natural fears, from spiders to the darkness of a prison cell, by sharing the harrowing story of a Marian priestwho survived Auschwitz and a Soviet Gulag. He reveals that the true terror is not physical suffering, but the separation of our hearts from Christ through mortal sin. While the world fears death and hardship, the Easter season reminds us that Christ has conquered both. Father Matthew urges us to fear only the loss of our union with God, which is the only thing that brings true death. He cites St. Bonaventure and St. Mother Teresa, emphasizing that the secret to a fruitful apostolate lies not in brilliance or busyness, but in the quiet power of prayer at the foot of the Cross. The homily highlights the wisdom of Fr. George Machaj-Otis, who prayed to fear only dying without having toiled for the Church. Father Matthew explains that when we are united with God through prayer, we gain His perspective, seeing the loss of souls as the only true danger. He also celebrates the protective power of the Blessed Virgin Mary, quoting St. Louis de Montfort and the story of King John Sobieski at the Battle of Vienna. Just as Mary shelters her children like a hen with her chicks, she surrounds us with her imperial forces in our spiritual battles. Father Matthew encourages us to nestle close to Our Lady'sImmaculate Heart, where we find the peace to trust in her Son Jesus and the courage to fight for the salvation of souls without fear. ★ Support this podcast ★

Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled Young Adults Retreat with Fr. Bernard Adoration Gospel and Homily, a Q&A Session and a Mass Gospel and Homily The Retreat also featured a Rosary Walk and other activities, which were not recorded. Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled At a young adult retreat . . . . . . centered on Adoration, Scripture, and Mass, participants were invited to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ through listening, trust, and authentic faith. The Gospel from Gospel of John emphasizes Jesus' reassurance: “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” reminding believers that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that trust in Him brings peace amid life's anxieties. The homily connects this to everyday experience . . . like the confidence felt when loved ones are present . . . showing that faith in Jesus gives courage and purpose. A central theme is the distinction between knowing about Jesus and truly knowing Him through personal encounter. Faith is not meant to be lived alone but shared in community, strengthened through prayer, Adoration, and participation in the Church. During the Q&A, key topics included: • Marian devotion, explained through the spirituality of Saint Louis de Montfort, emphasizing that true devotion to Mary always leads to Jesus • Vocation discernment, highlighting the importance of listening to God despite distractions and fears • Doubt, acknowledged as part of faith, but overcome by trust in God's constant presence • Modern challenges, encouraging young people to seek silence, prayer, and truth amid a noisy and confusing world. The Mass Gospel from Gospel of Luke reinforces humility in prayer through the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. True prayer comes from the heart, not self-righteousness. The retreat concludes with a Lenten call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, stressing that what God desires most is not outward actions alone, but a sincere heart—offering even one's sins for transformation. Overall, the message encourages young adults to: • Trust in Jesus • Encounter Him personally • Live faith in community • Pray with humility • Respond courageously to God's call Listen more to Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled --------------------------------------------------------------- During this Retreat, a brief description of future Retreats is discussed. --------------------------------------------------------------- Art Work The Storm on the Sea of Galilee: Dutch Painter: Rembrandt: 1633 Uniquely, this painting was in a Boston Museum for almost 100 years, until 1990. When King John sealed Magna Carta in 1215, it was meant to end a civil war. Instead, it sparked an idea that still resonates today. In this episode, we explore two medieval documents that shaped ideas about power in society - Magna Carta and the 1265 summons list for a parliament led by the charismatic baron Simon de Montfort. This is the first instalment of our mini-series People and Power, which looks at how people have challenged authority and fought to have their voices heard in Britain. Our guests are Paul Dryburgh and Jessica Nelson, historians at The National Archives.

From Not Enough to More Than Enough Today's Homily unites two biblical moments: First, The Gospel (Mark 8: Feeding of the Four Thousand) reveals Christ's deep compassion for humanity wandering in a spiritual “wilderness.” The crowd cannot sustain itself; human resources are insufficient. Yet when the disciples offer their “not much” . . . seven loaves and a few fish . . . Jesus transforms scarcity into abundance. This miracle foreshadows the Eucharist: Christ continues to feed the world through His Church, using humble means to accomplish divine grace. Second, The First Reading (Jeroboam and the Divided Kingdom) shows the opposite movement. Jeroboam, though raised up by God, becomes insecure and replaces true worship with convenient, man-made alternatives. He prefers control, comfort, and political security over trust in the Lord. This leads to spiritual decline and instability for Israel. The contrast is deliberate: • Jeroboam grasps, mistrusts, and substitutes human solutions → leading to loss. • The disciples surrender their inadequacy to Christ → leading to superabundance. The Homily and scripture message for today is clear: we must not reshape faith around convenience or personal preference. Instead, we entrust our poverty, weakness, and “not enough” to Christ, who alone can transform them into saving grace . . . especially through Word and Sacrament. The Homily concludes with a correlation of today's theme with Montfort's teachings. Hear more within the Homily. #endtimes #catholic #ourladyToday is the last Sunday of the liturgical year and it represents the end of time. That is why the Church gives us a Gospel passage of Our Lord speaking about the Last Judgment.Whenever Our Lord speaks of the Last Judgment, He wants to give us certain means by which we may identify it, while at the same time He does not want to tell us when it will happen. Rather, He wants us to always watch and be ready for His coming.Today, I would like to speak about some other general information about the Last Judgment and the End Times. We do not have this information from the Gospels but from a saint. This information comes from St. Louis de Montfort and it concerns the role of Our Lady in the End Times. We have to understand St. Louis' perspective on the Providence of God. It is that God the Trinity desired to make use of Our Lady in every aspect of the work of the Redemption and salvation of mankind. This was a free choice on the part of God because of the fact that He is almighty and does not need anyone. It is not that He needs to make use of Our Lady; it is that He wills to do so out of His goodness.Think of a situation in the home where the father is fixing a door. He is the most capable member of the family to do it and he does not need anyone's help. But he chooses to ask his daughter to help him, for her sake. He wants to spend time with her, he wants her to learn, and he wants her to be a part of the upkeep of the house.Something similar goes on with our salvation. It's like the door into Heaven was broken and could not be used any more. The heavenly Father is going to fix it. He does not need anyone to help Him to do so. But He chooses to ask one of the members of the human race, the ones who broke the door, to help Him in fixing the door.He asks Our Lady for her help and she consents. By her consent, one of the members of the human race that is being redeemed and saved participates in the work to save us.We all know what this meant for Our Lady during her lifetime. She consented to become the Mother of Our Lord. She took care of Him during His hidden life. She requested Him to perform His first miracle. She accompanied Him during His public life and was with Him at the foot of the Cross.During the first centuries of the Church, Marian devotion was present but was not very strong. As the centuries go by, Our Lady becomes more and more known. She becomes more honored. Catholics understand better the role that God gave her. They start to make more use of devotions to her, like the Office of Our Lady and the Rosary that she revealed to St. Dominic. Our Lady herself begins to reveal herself more through apparitions: her apparitions to St. Dominic, St. Simon Stock, the founders of the Servite Order—all these in the Middle Ages. Then, the more modern apparitions to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, to St. Catherine Laboure in Paris, and to the three children of Fatima.St. Louis de Montfort notices these two things and he applies them to the end times: a) God wants to make use of Our Lady in the whole of the work of our Redemption and salvation; b) God wants Our Lady to become more and more known over time. From the realization of this plan of divine Providence, he draws a conclusion: “It was through Mary that the salvation of the world was begun, and it is through Mary that it must be consummated… In the second coming of Jesus Christ, Mary has to be made known and revealed by the Holy Ghost in order that, through her, Jesus Christ may be known, loved and served… God wishes to reveal and make known Mary, the masterpiece of His hands, in these latter times” (True Devotion, par. 49-50).
Meditations on the Mysteries of the Rosary The Sorrowful Mysteries Where Wisdom Dwells: Suffering, Redemption, and the Sorrowful Mysteries This conference explores the deep meaning of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, . . . . . . emphasizing that the heart of these mysteries is The Cross of Christ, the fullest revelation of God's unconditional, unmerited love for humanity. The conference explains that while the Rosary traditionally seemed to bypass the public ministry of Jesus, the early Church understood His ministry as presupposed in the proclamation of His passion, death, and resurrection . . . the core of apostolic preaching. The Cross of Christ The conference highlights that the cross exposes both the radical depth of human sin (understood as love rejected) and the redemptive power of suffering when united with Christ. Drawing on St. Louis de Montfort and Scripture, the conference shows that suffering without Christ is destructive, but suffering with Christ becomes a path to holiness, hope, and resurrection. Each of the five Sorrowful Mysteries is then examined: 1. Agony in the Garden: Jesus' anguish reveals the weight of His mission and perfect obedience. The disciples' betrayal and abandonment invite us to stay spiritually awake, embrace suffering with Christ, and cultivate contrition. 2. Scourging at the Pillar: This mystery summarizes the rejection of Jesus—by His people, His closest followers, the crowds, and His executioners—mirroring humanity's own tendency to refuse God's love. 3. Crowning with Thorns: The mock coronation exposes our inclination to choose worldly “kings” over Christ. Mary's presence urges repentance and conversion. 4. Carrying of the Cross: Our attitude toward our personal crosses reveals our discipleship. With Christ, the cross becomes a treasure, a sign of victory, and our lifelong standard. 5. Crucifixion: At the foot of the cross, Mary stands united with Jesus, witnessing the reversal of the Fall . . . where Adam grasped the fruit of a tree, Christ now gives Himself as the true fruit that brings life. The conference concludes by reaffirming that the Sorrowful Mysteries draw us into the heart of God's love and the mystery of redemption accomplished through the cross.
