Two women, two continents, two stories whispered in the shadows of history. One, a mystic in war-torn Europe, said to channel voices from the stars—secrets that could have changed the fate of nations. The other, a siren of the Amazon, her voice enchanting the elite until rumors of blood and immortality stained her legacy. Maria Orsic, vanished without a trace in 1945. Camille Montfort, buried in 1896—or so they say. But what if the truth isn't that simple? What if the past still echoes with their footsteps, or something darker? May 3rd, 2025: St Louis de Montfort's True Devotion to Mary
fWotD Episode 2917: Initial campaign of the Breton Civil War Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 30 April 2025, is Initial campaign of the Breton Civil War.The initial campaign of the Breton Civil War took place in 1341 when a French royal army intervened in a dynastic dispute between two claimants to the Duchy of Brittany. Brittany was a province of France, but although the dukes of Brittany were vassals of the French kings they governed the duchy as independent rulers. When Duke John III (r. 1312–1341) died on 30 April 1341, title to the duchy was claimed by both his niece, Joan of Penthièvre, and his younger half-brother, John of Montfort. Joan's claim was exercised through her husband, Charles of Blois, a nephew of the king of France, Philip VI (r. 1328–1350). A complicating factor was the ongoing Hundred Years' War between France and England that had broken out in 1337. A truce was in place which was due to expire in June 1341 but was extended to June 1342.It was generally assumed that Joan's claim would prevail and that Charles would become the new duke. But John acted quickly and installed friendly garrisons in most of the towns and castles of Brittany by August. He discussed the possibility of a military treaty with English emissaries but made no move towards effecting one. Rumours of these discussions reached Philip, causing him to turn against John and in September Charles was recognised as the new duke. John refused to give way and Philip sent an army to Brittany to impose Charles.Within a month John had been defeated and was a prisoner. His wife, Joanna of Flanders, sent the ducal treasury west to Brest, took command of her husband's field army, stormed the town of Redon and moved to the small but strongly walled town of Hennebont. She despatched a senior counsellor to encourage English military intervention, set up her two-year-old son, also named John, as the faction's figurehead and heir to his father's claim to the duchy, and waited on events. The war lasted 24 years, frequently as a part of the Hundred Years' War.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:48 UTC on Wednesday, 30 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Initial campaign of the Breton Civil War on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Gregory.

Today's Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Father Charles Murr joins Terry Gospel - John 3:1-8 - There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a Teacher Who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that You are doing unless God is with him." Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one is born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother's womb and be born again, can he?" Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." In this episode of the Gotta Be Saints Podcast, I share a talk I recently gave to a men's group at my old parish, centered on The Secret of Holiness: Lessons from Our Lady.On this special episode, released on the feast of St. Louis de Montfort—a saint who radically shaped my devotion to the Blessed Mother—I dive into the truth that Mary isn't just a part of our Catholic faith... she's essential to it. Through Scripture, personal stories, and practical guidance, I explore how Mary's humility, docility, and courage offer us a model for growing in holiness today.Holiness must be our primary goal, even before family, career, or comfort. And no one can guide us more surely to Jesus than His mother.Topics Covered:Why Mary is the “safest, easiest, shortest, and most perfect” way to JesusWhat the Annunciation, Wedding at Cana, and the Cross reveal about Mary's role in salvationThe power of her last recorded words in Scripture: “Do whatever He tells you”The importance of embracing suffering, obedience, and mission like Our LadyPractical ways to grow in holiness today—starting with the Rosary, the sacraments, and ScriptureHow men and women alike can model Mary's yes in a world of distraction and indifference
St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, Priest (Optional Memorial)
Friends of the Rosary,Today, Monday of the Second Week of Easter, a day after Divine Mercy Sunday, we celebrate the memorial of St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, a 17th-century French saint revered for his intense devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Virgin Mary, especially through the Rosary.St. Louis-Marie wrote the prayer of entrustment to Our Lady, “Totus Tuus ego sum,” which means, “I am all yours.” The late Pope John Paul II took the phrase “Totus Tuus” as his episcopal motto. The saint manifested a love for the poor while he was at school and joined a society of young men who ministered to the poor and the sick on school holidays. When he was 19, he walked 130 miles to Paris to study theology, giving all he had to the poor he met along the way, and made a vow to live solely on alms. With a gift for preaching, he often drew crowds of thousands to hear his sermons in which he encouraged frequent communion and devotion to Mary.He was poisoned by Jansenists, a heretical movement within the Church that believed in absolute Predestination, in which only a chosen few are saved, and the rest damned. He wrote two masterpieces of Marian piety, “The Secret of the Rosary” and “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin,” which he correctly prophesied would be hidden by the devil for a time. The “True Devotion” was discovered 200 years after his death. One year before his death, St. Louis-Marie founded two congregations: the Daughters of Divine Wisdom, which cared for the sick in hospitals and educated poor girls, and the Company of Mary, a missionary order devoted to preaching and spreading devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New York• April 28, 2025, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Full Text of ReadingsSecond Sunday of Easter Sunday of Divine Mercy Lectionary: 45The Saint of the day is Saint Louis Mary Grignion de MontfortSaint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort's Story Louis's life is inseparable from his efforts to promote genuine devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother of the Church. Totus tuus (“completely yours”) was Louis's personal motto; Pope John Paul II chose it as his episcopal motto. Born in the Breton village of Montfort, close to Rennes, France, as an adult Louis identified himself by the place of his baptism instead of his family name, Grignion. After being educated by the Jesuits and the Sulpicians, he was ordained a diocesan priest in 1700. Soon he began preaching parish missions throughout western France. His years of ministering to the poor prompted him to travel and live very simply, sometimes getting him into trouble with Church authorities. In his preaching, which attracted thousands of people back to the faith, Father Louis recommended frequent, even daily, Holy Communion—not the custom then!—and imitation of the Virgin Mary's ongoing acceptance of God's will for her life. Louis founded the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, for priests and brothers, and the Daughters of Wisdom, who cared especially for the sick. His book True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin has become a classic explanation of Marian devotion. Louis died in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, where a basilica has been erected in his honor. He was canonized in 1947, and his liturgical feast is celebrated on April 28. Reflection Like Mary, Louis experienced challenges in his efforts to follow Jesus. Opposed at times in his preaching and in his other ministries, Louis knew with Saint Paul, “Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Any attempt to succeed by worldly standards runs the risk of betraying the Good News of Jesus. Mary is “the first and most perfect disciple,” as the late Sulpician Father Raymond Brown described her. The Queen of All Hearts: Mary's Role in Building the Body of Christ This conference emphasizes the deeply communal and celebratory nature . . . . . . of Christian spirituality, rooted in the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death. It highlights that this victory is not merely individual but shared among all believers, particularly through their connection with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Montfort underscores that Christian salvation cannot be isolated; to belong to Christ is to belong to His Church—His body—and by extension, to Mary, who is inseparably united with Jesus and His mission. Through the lens of St. Louis de Montfort's spirituality, especially the act of total consecration to Jesus through Mary, this belonging is not only personal but ecclesial and missional. It involves receiving Mary into one's life as one's “every good,” allowing her to guide and order the heart, which leads to a deeper participation in the life and mission of the Church. The creation of the Association of Mary Queen of All Hearts serves as a concrete expression of this spirituality, offering a communal structure where consecrated individuals can grow, pray, and serve together. The ultimate aim is the reign of Jesus through Mary in every heart, a vision that also inspired the foundation of the Marian shrine on Long Island. Listen to this Meditation Media. Listen to: The Queen of All Hearts: Mary's Role in Building the Body of Christ -------------------------------------------------------------- Something different, which is this radical act of belonging. And it is this radical act of belonging to our Lord, to Our Lady, and therefore to His Church that we seek to grow in. And the mission that he would see for an organization like this is literally the propagation of this deeper belonging out into the world. And that's what he means by the reign of Jesus through Mary. The very first sentence in the text we have from his work that we call True Devotion is it is through the Virgin Mary that Jesus . . .
As Divine Mercy Sunday approaches, Barb Ernster and Katie Moran reflect on the life and legacy of Blessed Carlo Acutis—the soon-to-be canonized "millennial saint." In this inspiring conversation, they explore how Carlo's deep devotion to the Eucharist, quiet sacrifices, and digital evangelization echo the spirit of St. Francisco and St. Jacinta. They also share how April is a powerful month for Fatima devotees, honoring saints like St. Francisco and St. Louis de Montfort. Tune in to hear how Carlo's example offers a radiant path of holiness for today's youth in an age of distraction. This episode is pre-recorded. In light of Pope Francis's passing, the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis has been deferred. We join in prayer for the Church during this time of transition.

Send us a text by clicking this link! The world's hatred toward Christ forms the heart of today's powerful meditation as we journey through Tuesday in Passion Week. Reflecting on how Jesus walked in Galilee to avoid the murderous intentions of his enemies in Judea, we unpack the profound mystery that His suffering was entirely voluntary – He could escape when needed because "His hour had not yet come," but ultimately chose to surrender Himself for our salvation.St. Louis de Montfort challenges us with the stark reality that faithful Christians must stand apart: "We must not believe or follow the false maxims of the world, or think, speak or act like people of the world. Their doctrine is opposed to that of incarnate wisdom, as darkness is to light and death to life." This countercultural calling resonates deeply in our secular age, where Christianity increasingly finds itself marginalized and opposed. The meditation explores how Catholics have historically navigated hostile environments, often compromising to survive rather than standing firmly for their faith. Today's spiritual resolutions offer practical ways to strengthen our witness: making voluntary mortifications, offering interior acts of reparation when God's name is blasphemed, and praying for persecuted Christians worldwide. Even embracing silence in our noise-saturated culture becomes a radical act of spiritual resistance. As St. Vincent de Paul reminds us, "We have to be ready to suffer, sometimes in one way, sometimes in another, otherwise we would not be the disciples of this divine master." As one reads the thoughts of Saint Isaac the Syrian the experience is almost like that of the disciples on the road to Emmaus: “Did our hearts not burn within us?” Isaac speaks to something so deep within the human heart that it ignites the very thing that he sets out to inflame: desire, wonder, awe at the love of God and the mystery of the Divine Life into which God invites us. One of the great struggles that we have as Christians is that we approach the faith and the spiritual life in a common fashion. In our reading of the Scriptures, we approach them in a reductive manner, dissecting the gospels; pulling out for ourselves bits of wisdom to help us get through life. Yet, Isaac understands that we cannot over-scrutinize the words that are written or spoken to us, but rather must immerse ourselves humbly in Divine Wisdom. Isaac tells us that those who are filled with grace are led by the light that is running between the lines. It is this humble and prayerful approach not only to the scriptures but to the faith as a whole that prevents the heart from being common and devoid of that holy power that “gives the heart a most sweet taste through perceptions that awe the soul.” A soul that is filled with the spirit is going to run toward God, driven by an urgent longing for the fullness of life and love that He alone can satisfy. Not every soul is awakened to that sense of wonder yet it is the pearl of great price, the treasure hidden in the field, and the one thing necessary. May God fill our hearts with a holy desire. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:09:28 The Recovery Community Hub of PBC, Inc.: Hey everyone, in Christ, my name is Ian, I am only using my former workers Zoom platform 00:11:17 Myles Davidson: Pg. 116 “Just as the heaviness of weights…” 00:11:50 Vanessa: I'm in Ontario too. In this way you will rise in actual deed to the level of martyrdom in struggling with every passion, suffering no harm from whatever you may meet within this limit, if you endure to the end and do not weaken. ~ St Isaac the Syrian 00:20:34 Anthony: It appears Isaac uses "Liberty" of mind different than the Greek Fathers? 00:34:08 Ben: I remember reading "The Imitation of Christ" for the first time in my youth, and thinking, "Oh, boy, this totally demolishes everything we were ever taught about self-esteem!" 00:36:20 David: I am wondering if the Diatessaron which was the most common with Aramaic communities might have influenced idea of living the gospel instead of the legal way of the west? 00:38:06 David: St Emphrain wrote a discourse on that and I assume Issac was likely exposed where the separate gospels tend to compare and contrast and get far to analytical. 00:40:22 David: The other thing I find fascinating the Syrian fathers taught through poetry which moves emotions not just debates or arguments. 00:42:17 Anthony: Seeing the Word of God as the Divine Logos keeps us from the "fundamentalism" that makes categories of touchable and untouchable. 00:42:27 Jamie Hickman: Great podcast episode on the show Square Notes looking at Thomas Aquinas's poetry...too often he's only known by his Summas as though that's his only writing style 00:42:46 Jamie Hickman: hat tip to Fr. Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link! The power of persistent faith takes center stage in this meditation for the First Week of Lent as we examine the remarkable story of the Canaanite woman. When she approaches Jesus seeking healing for her daughter, his response seems harsh: "the bread of the children is not for dogs." Yet her humble persistence—"but the little dogs eat the crumbs"—ultimately wins his heart. "O woman, great is thy faith," Jesus declares, giving us a profound model of how faith becomes our greatest strength. Why do we struggle to effectively deploy our faith? The answer lies in our resistance to acknowledging our complete dependence on God. Drawing from Father Patrick Troadec's "Toward Easter," we explore how true faith requires us to "place ourselves humbly with the little dogs under the Master's table" to receive grace despite our unworthiness. This meditation includes beautiful prayers and reflections from spiritual giants like St. Catherine of Siena and St. Louis de Montfort, reminding us that faith serves as the foundation for all virtue. The conversation expands to consider how faith faces relentless attacks in our modern world. From secular education to materialistic culture, everything seems designed to replace true faith with counterfeits. Yet, without authentic faith, we cannot properly develop hope or charity. The meditation offers practical wisdom for strengthening this essential virtue: daily recitation of the Creed, making formal Acts of Faith each morning, and resolving not to lose confidence in God during trials. As we continue our Lenten journey, we're invited to rediscover faith not as a passive inheritance but as our active strength, enabling us to persevere through life's challenges with the humble confidence of the Canaanite woman.Support the showSponsored by Recusant Cellars, an unapologetically Catholic and pro-life winery from Washington state. In this episode, Charlie Higson gets properly acquainted with the great knight and statesman, Simon De Montfort, who started out originally as one of Henry III's chief supporters but became increasingly enraged by how badly he thought Henry was running the country.Inevitably this led to wars and power struggles as de Montfort ended up leading the opposition to Henry as head of the baronial forces, trying to depose him, or at least curb his powers. It's a fascinating story and to help Charlie through the slings and arrows, he welcomes back Dr Sophie Therese Ambler, author of The Song of Simon de Montfort: The Life and Death of a Medieval Revolutionary Hosted on Acast. Friends of the Rosary, We should entrust our cares and our very lives to the Blessed Virgin Mary, for she is "the safest, easiest, shortest, and most perfect way" to Jesus and sanctity, as St. Louis de Montfort wrote in his "Treatise on the Ture Devotion to Mary." Following the Marian piety of St. Louis de Montfort, St. John Paul II chose as the papal motto "Totus Tuus" ("totally yours"). He entrusted all his prayers and works to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The excellence, heroic virtue, faith, and trust in God rose Mary above that of every other creature. Mary is the perfect model of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Devotion to Mary always brings us closer to Christ, and it's a wonderful part of belonging to Christ's family, the Church. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Simon de Montfort's body was horribly mutilated and dismembered after his defeat at 1265's fateful Battle of Evesham, during the Second Barons' War. The medieval rebel leader's head and testicles were sent to the wife of one of his killers, while his butchered hands and feet were spread far and wide across Britain.
