Finishing off their latest series on Westerns, Lee and Daniel tackle the Coen brothers' western anthology film "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" (2018). Did they manage to pull off another classic, or does this film fall short of their greater works? The six segments; their individual themes, tone, style, and the performances from the actors in each are discussed. At the end the hosts rank the segments and give their overall final thoughts on the film as a whole, and talk a bit about it being a Netflix-only thing. Also covered: A listener comment and what Lee has watched as of late. "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" IMDB Featured Music: "Cool Water" by Bob Nolan (performed by Tim Blake Nelson); "Carefree Drifter" by David Rawlings & Gillian Welch; "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings" by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch (performed by Tim Blake Nelson and Willie Watson); & "The Book" by Carter Burwell.

Do you want a WAR with the Gaga Monsters?! ***This is somehow still a Spoiler Free-Ish Episode*** Though if you’re in sleuth mode, you can certainly follow a few clues to some plot points in these movies. Most of said plot points involve the scenes where the songs are sung, but if you’re deathly allergic to “all” spoilers, then be advised. Our list of nominees is star studded with Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Jennifer Hudson, Emily Blunt, and Tim Blake Nelson(?!). We have a group of films, all multi-nominated by the Academy & Oscar Sprint Profiled by us including A Star Is Born, Black Panther, RBG, Mary Poppins Returns, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. So there’s a ton to chat about with the songs themselves. Those chats then go on tangents into how these 5 films might fare overall, & you’ll get some race coverage here as well. The basic format of the episode is a mish-mosh of two go-to types of MMO shows: the Oscar category overview & Best Original Song Retrospective. In all of those song halfisodes (there’s 12 in that series), we have always loved the break from film criticism as we do our best impersonations of Beavis & Butthead heckling / marveling over the music videos & all of the awesome & awesomely bad on display. We discuss the upcoming Oscar Night performances and what we hope to see, even though all 5 won’t get their time. Then as we do in our category overviews, we discuss why the nominee will win and why they won’t in an oratorical exercise only one of us is any good at, while the other just makes snide comments. We’ll introduce each song with a snippet and if available, some quick specs. Then to wrap it all up, we do a final countdown of our top 5’s. This segment is humbly called Perfecting Perfection, and here, we fit in some of the many snubs we’ve mentioned along the way. It’s a fun format, and it brings out the best & worst in us, all of which we hope plays for good radio. Do stay tuned for many more category overviews. Last year, we covered Picture, Director, the 4 acting, and Best Original Screenplay categories. We do plan to hit on all of those again & perhaps a few more before Oscar Night. We’ll also be continuing our MMO Weekly series throughout the rest of awards season. Here you’ll get our Oscar Race Updates & our reactions to the weekend’s latest awards show. This Monday, we’ll be releasing a late day reaction to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and we’ll also follow up on our audience interactions, the much delayed “What We’re Watching” segment that has been built dangerously large for Also Mike, and our usual banter on the box office & what’s been happening in hollywood news. OSP’s are coming on Cold War, Can You Ever Forgive Me, & At Eternity’s Gate, and we may have a fun interview or two or seven for you in the coming months. Yes, these wallflowers are about to bloom. So keep clicking play. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, & we are Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Instagram. You can comment / like / share / review & 5 star us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about everywhere you can listen to podcasts. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
