Dracula — the immortal vampire, cloaked in darkness, sleeping in coffins, and thirsting for blood. But what if behind the legend of Count Dracula lies a man even more terrifying than the myth?In this episode, we travel back to 15th-century Eastern Europe to uncover the truth behind the name that inspired Bram Stoker's iconic vampire. Meet Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler and Dracula, a Wallachian prince born into a world of political betrayal, shifting alliances, and brutal warfare. Sent as a hostage to the Ottoman Empire as a child, Vlad would emerge with a hardened soul and a ruthless sense of justice. His rise to power was swift and merciless. He impaled thousands, enslaved the nobility, and even defied the Ottoman Sultan with horrific displays of cruelty meant to terrify entire armies. We explore how this real-life figure, whose cruelty knew no bounds, became the inspiration for one of fiction's most enduring villains. Centuries after Vlad's death, his story was resurrected by Bram Stoker, who stumbled across the name “Dracula” and used it to create a character that would haunt books, films, and nightmares for generations. But just how much of the bloodsucking Count matches the real voivode who once ruled Wallachia? You'll learn about Vlad's notorious acts — from forests of impaled enemies to his defiant night attacks against the Ottoman Empire — and discover how these historical accounts morphed into the chilling features of the fictional Dracula: the aristocratic bearing, the Transylvanian castle, and the eerie connection to blood and death. We'll also trace how Dracula evolved on stage and screen, transforming from warlord to vampire king, horror icon, and pop culture legend. So—was Dracula real, or merely a monster of fiction? This episode pulls back the cloak to reveal the twisted truth at the heart of a legend.www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast

We all crave a good meal. The challenge is savoring it once it's placed before you. Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner have wickedly, and delightfully, discovered a way to make Bram Stoker's Dracula not one good dish, but three...and possibly four and five. For the last several years, they've transformed the classic vampire novel into a feast impossible to gobble down in one sitting. By taking throwaway sentences in the book and building two graphic novels out of them (Dracula Book I: The Impaler, Dracula Book II: The Brides), they've miraculously extended their love affair with Vlad, and ours in the process as well. Now, with Dracula Book III: The Count, which only has a week left on Kickstarter, Jones and Kelley properly excavate Bram Stoker's book. This third entry tackles the iconic plot, but only from Count Dracula's perspective. We all know this story from Jonathan Harker, Mina, and Van Helsing's point of view, but how did the vicious beast at the center of their fear experience the whole endeavor? No more letters. Only the Count's singular, hungry howl of self. We've read and watched many Dracula adaptations, but none as exhaustive and creative as this. As a result, this week's podcast had to match Jones and Wagner's studious passion. All together, we dig deep into their previous entry, Dracula Book II: The Brides. We discuss how, in chaining themselves to Dracula's perspective, they create unparalleled empathy for the monster and his godless pursuits. Is there danger in that? Again, Dracula: The Count only has seven days left on its Kickstarter campaign. Please visit the crowdfunding project by clicking HERE. You can continue the conversation with Kelley Jones by visiting his Instagram. You can follow Matt Wagner on Blue Sky and Instagram. In honor of the spooky season, we present two monstrous origin stories --Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula. We know when these books were written in the 19th century. But what inspired the imaginations of the rebellious teenager Mary Shelley, or the beleaguered theatrical promoter Bram Stoker? I talk with biographer Charlotte Gordon and Professors Gillen D'Arcy Wood and Ron Broglio about how “The Year Without a Summer” may have sparked storms in Mary Shelley's mind. And I talk with UC Davis professor Louis Warren about why he believes an American entertainer was the unlikely model for Count Dracula. Featuring readings by Lily Dorment and John Keating. Vampires Pt. 2: Vlad Dracula + More Local Legends

The Poisoner's Almanac

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2025 60:03

Hello Poison Friends! Lets talk more vampires! This episode we need to discuss the fictional Count Dracula's namesake, Vlad III or Vlad Dracula, who is also known as Vlad the Impaler. I am going to go ahead and include a trigger warning here for some violence and gory details, but I am including timestamps here for those who want the history while skipping over these more gruesome parts:36:00-37:07-- Violent/disturbing death mention.49:54-51:24-- Violence, mentions + details of death via impalement.36:00-37:03--Violence and more impalement details + Other mentions of torture and murder (concerning adults and children), including cannibalism. 46:03-46:27-- Violent nature of Vlad Dracula's death and treatment of his corpse. Okay, so obviously Vlad III/Dracula did some pretty messed up stuff during his lifetime and reign over Wallachia. We are covering his history as well as a bit of his father, Vlad II's, to try to understand him a little better as well as why he makes for good horror character inspiration. There is a lot of political turmoil and drama involved here between nations such as Hungary, Wallachia, Transylvania, Moldavia, and of course the Ottoman Empire. We will be mentioning the many alliances and betrayals as well. In all of the drama, Vlad III created a name for himself as a ruthless soldier, using Guerrilla warfare tactics at times and brutalizing enemy soldiers and civilians. He found pleasure in impaling people alive and watching them suffer and he enjoyed burning down homes and whole villages. He was known to strike fear into invading armies by making sure they encountered thousands of impaled corpses, staked up high, on their way to him. Many of the accounts we have of his life and reign (technically "reigns", because he was removed from power a few times and then took power back), are from 15th century accounts from various sources such as monasteries, letters, eye witness accounts, war records, etc. His nickname, Vlad the Impaler, was certainly earned. I also wanted to talk about some vampire legends we have here in the US. The two I am bringing to you are from New Orleans, LA, where the very air seems supernatural and superstition is a way of life. There we come by the story of Jacques St. Germain, who gave lavish dinner parties for fellow wealthy, aristocratic folks in the area. He never ate at these parties, though, and there were rumors of him that have since formed into legend. Another vampire tale from the area involves the "Casket Girls," who immigrated from France in the 18th century to find husbands. Or at least that was what their claim was. This legend is based on the filles a la cassette who did indeed travel to the area around that time, but somewhere down the line, the word "cassette" became "casquette" and then mistranslated to "casket." Merry October, you beautiful people! For a holiday as fun as Halloween, who has the right to limit the party to one day? No-fucking-body.That's why on THE MOVIES, I'm celebrating for 31 straight days. This project allows me to further dig down the rabbit hole of my favorite genre, horror, discovering subterranean weird-ass, BARBARIAN-esque detours I've yet to witness. Hold my hand and don't let go. For this entire month, we're gonna get scary. How better to start this bacchanalia of blood than with five days of the Universal Monsters? And how better to begin this run than with the eternally imitated progenitor, Count Dracula? Tod Browning directed and Karl Freund directed the photography (and the whole movie, depending on who you ask) but for my money, this is Bela Lugosi's movie. He's hypnotic, alluring, even amiable at times but don't cross him. He'll just as soon eye you like a panther and in one move, strike. This performance is so iconic, even SESAME STREET had to ape it. Does an Academy Award even MATTER at that point?---Follow, rate and review THE MOVIES wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow THE MOVIES on Instagram, Bluesky & Letterboxd

Unfortunately all signs lead to Dracula's castle where they come face to face with the sadistic Count himself. This week we're joined by Mark Anastasio, program director for the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Boston to cash checks and bite necks with a look at Werner Herzog's ambitious remake of the FW Murnau's 1922 not-Dracula adaptation, Nosferatu. Mark has first-hand experience with Herzog, having hosted him at the theater numerous times and regales us with stories that we've never heard about the man before. He also does a pretty good Werner Herzog impression. In this movie, Herzog is joined by his creative arch-frenemy Klaus Kinski in a unique existential twist on one of the genres most unimpeachable classics. Here, Count Dracula is bunched, broken old monster with no desire to live but no path toward death. He brings pestilence and horror from the old world to then-modern day Germany and meets his match with the one woman in the city with the knowledge and determination to destroy the beast. Featuring Herzog's stunning visual storytelling and a few utterly bizarre performances, Nosferatu is unlike any horror movie you've ever seen in spite of it being a story told and retold dozens of times since the dawn of film.Want to try Bring Me The Axe premium content for a month at no charge? But when Transylvania experiences a mysterious jelly shortage, it allows his nemesis, Constantine, to swoop in and steal the brunch club—and the vampires' loyalty—from Dracula. But it's not just jelly donuts at stake. When townsfolk start to go missing, Dracula suspects Constantine has far more sinister motives lurking that could threaten everything vampires and humans have worked for. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970). We're back to Hammer Horror, back to Christopher Lee, and back to Dracula. In this episode of General Witchfinders, we sink our teeth into Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970), the fifth official film in Hammer's Dracula series and our sixth Hammer Dracula review to date. You can find links to all previous vampire escapades at https://tinyurl.com/Witchdrac. This British gothic horror classic, directed by Peter Sasdy and written by Hammer regular Anthony Hinds (under the alias John Elder), was nearly a Dracula-free affair. Christopher Lee had originally declined to return, and the script focused instead on Ralph Bates's doomed Lord Courtley. But Warner Bros. insisted: no Dracula, no deal. So #BigChrisLee once again rises from the grave — bloodthirsty, silent, and furiously regretting his contract. Taste the Blood of Dracula opens with a satanic ritual involving Dracula's powdered remains, a trio of Victorian hypocrites, and the ill-fated resurrection of evil. It's a moody, blood-soaked revenge tale packed with brooding graveyards and Hammer's trademark blend of sex, sin and satin capes. Cast Highlights:Christopher Lee as Count Dracula — in his fourth Dracula outing for Hammer.Ralph Bates as Lord Courtley — Hammer's would-be replacement for Lee.Geoffrey Keen as William Hargood — a patriarch with a hidden penchant for brothels.Linda Hayden as Alice Hargood — the daughter turned devotee, previously seen in Baby Love and The Blood on Satan's Claw.Peter Sallis as Samuel Paxton — yes, that Peter Sallis: Cleggy, Wallace, and voice of animated British melancholy.Roy Kinnear as Weller — bringing tragic optimism, as only Kinnear can. There's Hammer horror royalty in every frame, from Linda Hayden's eerie innocence to Ralph Bates's foppish devilry. And Geoffrey Keen? You may recognise him as Sir Frederick Gray, the Defence Minister across six Bond films — The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill and The Living Daylights. Ralph Bates, meanwhile, would go on to star in Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, The Horror of Frankenstein, Lust for a Vampire, becoming one of Hammer's key players. He also turned up in the final season of Secret Army (inspiring 'Allo 'Allo), and was once considered for major roles in Lifeforce — as discussed back in episode 39.Peter Sallis, who we last touched on in our Nicolas Lyndhurst deep-dive (episode 54), had an extraordinary career in British television, from Doctor Who to The Wind in the Willows to Wallace & Gromit. His role in this film might be brief, but his CV is longer than Dracula's cape. And finally, Roy Kinnear: from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to Help!, Watership Down, Blake's 7, and beyond — always brilliant, always beleaguered. Trivia for the diehards:This film was part of a double bill with Crescendo on release. The infamous brothel scene was trimmed from the theatrical cut but restored for later DVD editions.Released just 22 weeks before Scars of Dracula (covered back in episode 28). Whether you're a lifelong Hammer horror collector, a Christopher Lee completist, or simply a fan of vintage British horror with gothic flair, Taste the Blood of Dracula is essential viewing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. The story of New England's vampires begins with a scourge whose tragic trail is visible in cemeteries throughout the region. Incredible as it may seem today, vampires preyed upon their not-so-distant ancestors. Vampire attacks increased dramatically during the eighteenth century and remained the leading cause of death in New England throughout the nineteenth century. But this unseen killer did not resemble the clever Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's imagination. Indeed, it was so small that it was undetectable. New England's authentic vampires, you see, were pathogenic microbes (“bacteria with fangs,” as a nurse once described them). Prior to the twentieth century, a diagnosis of consumption (as pulmonary tuberculosis was called at that time) was a virtual death sentence. My Special Guest Is Michael Bell Michael E. Bell has a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington; his dissertation topic was African American voodoo beliefs and practices. He has an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a B.A. , with M.A. level course work completed, in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Bell was the Consulting Folklorist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Providence, Rhode Island, for more than twenty-five years. He has also taught courses in folklore, English, anthropology and American studies at several colleges and universities. His book, Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires, was a BookSense 76 Pick and winner of the Lord Ruthven Assembly Award for Best Nonfiction Book on Vampires. He has completed the manuscript for a second book on American vampires, titled The Vampire's Grasp: The Hidden History of Consumption in New England. Michael Bell and his wife, Carole, split their time between Rhode Island and Texas. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Learn how tuberculosis was once mistaken for vampire attacks in New England.2. Discover why families dug up loved ones to stop the spread of a deadly disease. If you value this podcast and want to enjoy more episodes please come and find us on https://www.patreon.com/Haunted_History_Chronicles to support the podcast, gain a wealth of additional exclusive podcasts, writing and other content.Links to all Haunted History Chronicles Social Media Pages, Published Materials and more: https://linktr.ee/hauntedhistorychronicles?fbclid=IwAR15rJF2m9nJ0HTXm27HZ3QQ2Llz46E0UpdWv-zePVn9Oj9Q8rdYaZsR74INEW Podcast Shop: https://www.teepublic.com/user/haunted-history-chroniclesBuy Me A Coffee https://ko-fi.com/hauntedhistorychronicles Guest Links Book Links: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B007ZFDTMY/allbooks?ingress=0&visitId=2acd0188-d7fb-48a4-9edc-2eaf8d21702b&ref_=ap_rdr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-bell-a7a15015/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100049057788689
