Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast
Convention season is now in full swing. Next up - Comic Con Revolution (CCR)! Programming director David Nieves joins us to discuss what goes into putting on a pop culture convention. What were our first convention experiences? San Diego Comic Con was first for some, while others were relegated to a single banquet room at the local Sheraton Hotel (looking at you Richard). If you ever dreamed of working at a con, David gives tips on how you can make that happen. David tells us about a NEW feature for this year's CCR. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience a special pop up with Trapped Escape Room. In The Henchmen's Heist, you and your crew are aspiring villains! You join Madame Graffiti's band of art thieves. The mission? To steal as many pieces of art as possible from the world-famous Lumina Museum at their annual Spectrum Gala. Along with the many superstars and escape room, we will also be there with TWO of our Trivia party game shows. Sunday May 18th we will host our Pop Culture Trivia Challenge at 12pm. At 2:45 we will play our Star Wars Trivia Challenge Strikes Back! Today in Star Wars History 5/2/2006 Revenge of the Sith wins top honors in two categories at the 32nd Saturn Awards. The film wins ‘Best Science Fiction Film' and John Williams wins for ‘Best Score.' SPONSORS Small World Vacations is an official sponsor of Skywalking Through Neverland. At 34, UK-based artist and composer Daniel Blumberg is the youngest person nominated for this year's Best Score at the Oscars. His work on The Brutalist, nominated for 10 Academy Awards, is a continuation and evolution of Brady Corbet's directorial talent — a longtime friend and collaborator. Daniel talks us through his formative experience at Cafe Oto in London — a hub for eccentric and inventive musical talents, which has also inspired Daniel's own highly reviewed solo albums. Daniel explains why he had to visit Italy himself to calibrate the echoes of a marble quarry, why he and Brady always envisioned the opening as a balance of tension and payoff, and why he left in raw recordings of musical “sketches” on purpose to help convey the endless pursuit of creative perfection the film depicts. Why the rising awards buzz around his unique score makes him nervous, and the unlikely (but true!) admiration for Wallace & Gromit.Interview by Kenny Holmes and Matt Schrader. Three years after his first appearance on Principle of Charity, the effervescent Tim Minchin returns for this first, and very special spotlight episode for 2025. Emile, Lloyd and Tim reflect on the principle of charity itself, and how themes explored in Tim's latest book You Don't Have To Have a Dream (Penguin Random House) relate to its application in our lives. What role can the scientific method, kindness and authenticity play in helping us consider the viewpoints of those with whom we most disagree, and lead flourishing lives? He has received awards such as the European Film Award for his work on Nora Fingscheidt's “System Crasher” and the German Film Award for Best Sound for “No One's With the Calves.” His other notable projects include “A Mouthful of Air,” the Netflix series “Dig Deeper,” and “A Pure Place,” which won the German Film Critics Award for Best Score. Gürtler has also been acclaimed for his work on “Space Dogs” and “System Crasher,” the latter earning him the European Original Score 2019.Gürtler's collaborations span artists like Berghain resident Efdemin, Thomas Bloch, and the Film Orchestra Babelsberg. Additionally, he's dedicated to fostering new talent through his teaching at film schools across Germany. Jan Miserre, from Erlangen, Bavaria, was influenced by his jazz saxophonist father and began playing piano at age four and drums at twelve. He studied Jazz Piano at the University of Arts in Berlin and has toured internationally, working with artists such as Till Brönner and Curtis Stigers. Miserre has received several awards, including the GEMA Musik Author's Prize for New Talent and the German Documentary Music Award. In 2022, he and Gürtler won Best Score from the German Film Critics Association for “A Pure Place.” Together, Gürtler and Miserre focus on international co-productions, often working on projects from their base in Berlin. They frequently travel to other countries or invite musicians from around the globe to collaborate with them in Berlin. Their diverse backgrounds and collaborative energy create compelling scores for film and television, earning them widespread acclaim and numerous awards. MORE ABOUT THE OUTRUN: A vivid and unflinching adaptation of Amy Liptrot's wrenching personal memoir of addiction, powered by an extraordinary central performance from Saoirse Ronan. Addicted to hedonism, drink and drugs, a young woman must wrestle with recovery in the remote islands of Orkney whilst reckoning with her complex family history. Powered by a pounding soundtrack, a kinetic visual style and intricate narrative structure, this extraordinarily moving film is redemptive, cathartic and utterly riveting.
EPISODE 118: Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka is an international acclaimed pianist, composer and experimental musician. In 2023 he was honored with an Academy Award and a BAFTA in the Best Score category for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front (directed by Edward Berger). His score to Garth Davis' Oscar-nominated film Lion, which he composed in collaboration with Dustin O'Halloran, was nominated for multiple awards: Oscar for Best Original Score, Golden Globe for Best Original Score, Best Score at the Critics' Choice Awards, and for Best Film Music at the BAFTAs. Bertelmann has provided music for several leading films and television series. He composed the score for Patrick Melrose, The Old Guard, Stowaway, the episode “Red Book” from Black Mirror, and Life After Life for BBC. He also composed film scores for Adrift, the 2018 romantic drama directed by Baltasa Kormákur, and, again in collaboration with O'Halloran, for Ammonite, which was short-listed for The Academy Awards in 2020. In 2022, he scored War Sailor, which was an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival. Volker Bertelmann has just worked with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger again on the film Conclave, which was presented at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024. Bertelmann, who in his solo work goes by the name Hauschka, is a uniquely innovative pianist; he is renowned both for his trademark sound, which he achieves by preparing the piano with various small objects, and his ability to improvise entire performances. His output is prodigious: he tours extensively, and has produced over twenty albums and EPs, both solo and in collaboration with others. He has worked, among many others, with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he was the artist in residence, with Múm, the Icelandic experimental musical group, and with the Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn. hauschka-net.deContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Michael and David speak of many things ... part of the reason they always seem to have so much fun. Among other things Michael speaks of how he manages to invite "the muses" and keeps his art both open and discreet at the same time. I always have speaking with Michael: our times always feel rich and multi-dimensional.2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films GET OUT, US and NOPE. Some of these pieces are available on the Cedille label, including DELIGHTS & DANCES, GLOBAL WARMING and WINGED CREATURES. Lairdinho and psufans2 discuss why the new divisional system doesn't always celebrate the highest lineup scores of the game week, and whether that should be addressed during the transition period. They also discuss the price differences between new-season and classic cards, and make some hypothetical builds to see if they can realistically pay themselves off over the course of a season. During an incredible Broadway career that stretched from 1953 to 1998, composer Cy Coleman created the music for 12 Broadway musicals. Unlike most Broadway composers, however, he was never part of an ongoing songwriting team but instead worked with seven very talented but very different collaborators. My guest today is one of those esteemed lyricists -- David Zippel who partnered with Cy Coleman on the score for the 1990 Tony Award winning "Best Musical", City Of Angels the hit musical that altogether received 10 Tony Awards including Coleman and Zippel's win for Best Score. That show launched David on his own stellar career which has honored with two Academy Award nominations, two Grammy Award nominations, and three Golden Globe nominations. His songs can be heard on over twenty-five million CDs around the world that include recording by Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Mel Torme, Ricky Martin, Cleo Laine, Barbara Cook, Nancy LaMott, and include the Original Broadway Cast and Soundtrack recordings of The Goodbye Girl, The Women In White, The Swan Princess and Disney's Hercules and Disney's Mulan. David and I first met shortly after we had both arrived in NY in the early 1980's and have remained friends and colleagues ever since. Today we begin our conversation talking about Coleman's Russian-Jewish heritage. So many Broadway songwriters -- Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein to name just a few were the children or grandchildren of Russian-Jewish immigrants. If you enjoy this podcast, I invite to join my Broadway Nation Facebook Group where there is a large and lively community of musical theater enthusiasts. This week, we're catching up with one of the Oscar-shortlisted Best Score nominees -- Anthony Willis' score to Emerald Fennell's lavish, mysterious thriller Saltburn. Fennell's second directorial feature, after Promising Young Woman, is a kind of Brideshead Revisited by way of Tom Ripley and mid-2000s party culture: A mysterious young bloke named Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) follows his irrepressible attraction to fellow Oxford pretty-boy Felix (Jacob Elordi) all the way to Felix's palatial mansion, Saltburn. There, he immerses himself in the hedonistic lifestyles of the ultra-rich, all the while hoping to catch a glimmer of Felix's attention -- or does he? Reuniting with Fennell for his second score with her, composer Anthony Willis crafts a suitably Gothic sound for her idiosyncratic class thriller. Opening with romantic strings, transitioning into classical choir, then electric pianos and additional layers and textures, Willis draws the listener in like one of Oliver's obsessions, before disrupting the film's jagged classicism with rough modern electronic textures and a sense of sweeping orchestral doom. Today, we talk to Willis about all of that and more, including his longtime collaboration with Fennell and his early life as a chorister at Windsor Castle. You can find Anthony Willis at his official website. Saltburn is currently available for rental or streaming on Prime Video. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.
