Send us a textLions! Tigers! Filmshake! Oh my! We're in town with a few days to kill, and we're talking 1990's Predator 2. Does it even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Predator 1? Should we even live in a world where we have to say Predator 1? Speaking of out of this world, the villain in our punishment film, 1990s I Come In Peace (Dark Angel), repeats the title throughout the movie, a movie we talk about for so long in the intro to this episode, it made the marquee. The Biden administration is preparing to allow a controversial border policy, enacted by the Trump administration, to end. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instituted Title 42 in March of 2020, essentially sending asylum seekers back to their home countries rather than allowing them to stay in the US, in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19. Now, however, the CDC appears ready to end that policy. Republicans in Congress warn ending Title 42 will lead to an avalanche of asylum seekers along our southern border, with no plan in place to process or house them; Democrats say it's time to stop forcing those who are fleeing from violence to return to their native countries. Joining The Rundown to talk about this story, as well as a good news story taking place in the state of Ohio, is CBN News Senior National Affairs Correspondent Heather Sells.

Write a great book and you're a genius. Turn a book into a great film and you're a visionary. Turn a great film into a book...that's another story. Novelizations of films are regular best-sellers with cult followings -- some are even more beloved than the films that spawned them -- but respected they are not. Instead, they're assumed to be the literary equivalent of merchandise: a way for the movie studios to make a few extra bucks, and a job for writers who aren't good enough to do anything else. But the people who write them beg to differ. Back in 2016, former OTM producer Jesse Brenneman went inside the world of novelizations; featuring authors Max Allan Collins, Alan Dean Foster, Elizabeth Hand, and Lee Goldberg. Songs: "The Blue Danube Waltz" by Johann Strauss "The Throne Room and End Title" by John Williams (from the film "Star Wars")   *Correction: In the piece it is stated that the Star Wars novelization begins, "Another time, another galaxy." In fact it begins, "Another galaxy, another time."

Synopsis On today's date in 1942, the RKO studio released a film titled “The Magnificent Ambersons,” based on Booth Tarkington's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel chronicling the declining fortunes of a wealthy Midwestern family and the massive social changes in American life caused by the arrival of the automobile. The film was written, produced, directed, and narrated by Orson Welles, who hired the great film composer Bernard Herrmann to provide the film's score. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. You would think Welles and Hermann would be pleased – but quite the opposite was the case.  As conceived by Welles, the film ran 131 minutes, but after unfavorable reactions by a preview audience, RKO took control of the film, cut 50 minutes, and rewrote and reshot a more upbeat ending. Half of Herrmann's score was also cut, and another composer brought in for the new scenes.  In disgust, Hermann asked that his name be removed from the film's credits. Despite RKO's alteration of its creators' vision, many still regard “The Magnificent Ambersons,” as one of the greatest films ever made, thanks to what remained of the original conception by Orson Welles and Bernard Herrmann. Music Played in Today's Program Bernard Hermann (1911-1975): “Pleasure Trip” & “End Title,” from “The Magnificent Ambersons” original film score (Australian Phil; Tony Bremer, cond.) On the May 4, 2021 episode of /Film Daily, /Film senior writer Ben Pearson is joined by managing editor Jacob Hall, weekend editor Brad Oman, and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to answer some listener questions from the mailbag.   In The Mailbag:   Hi gang, Hakim from Los Angeles writing in. I’m curious: what current/historical event or subculture would you all want to be explored in a film that hasn't been (doc or narrative)? Love the show. Keep up the awesome work! All the best, Hakim   Hey guys, love the show and appreciate the work that you do as well as the different perspectives everybody brings. My question is this: what is a movie that you feel you could do a one person reenactment of? Mine would be School of Rock. While it is not necessarily my favorite movie, I pretty much know it by heart and I feel that I could perform most of the movie by myself if I had to. Anyway keep up the great work! – Matt, New Jersey P.S. Today’s podcast discussed the best opening credits sequences and I just wanted to add Men in Black as an opening that deserves some love.   Hi Peter and /Film crew, I listen to your podcast while making dinner. I really loved the segment at the end of /Film Daily Ep. 875 where Ben, HT, and Chris discussed their favorite opening credit sequences. Film titles have shifted through the years from being Main Titles, which take place at the beginning of the film or tv show, to Main On End Titles, which take place at the end of the film or tv show. Marvel has taken advantage of this Main On End Title format for most of their films and tv shows. One Main on End Title that springs to mind is from Black Panther. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YGTeFM00iU They have Vibranium Sand which pulses to the beat of the soundtrack and forms characters and landscapes from the film. Main Titles seem to be more prevalent in Television shows in recent years. Some great examples of this are Westworld and Game of Thrones...chef's kiss!! If you are interested in learning more about Main Titles, please check out Art of the Title. https://www.artofthetitle.com/  I LOVE this site and it's a great historical resource! Maybe the crew can talk about their favorite Main On End Titles from films or TV shows or their favorite Main Titles from television shows. Keep up the great work and can't wait to hear your next podcast. – Vince from New Jersey   First of all, love the show. I play a little drinking game where I take a sip whenever Peter says,"I don't know.” I've been hammered for years now (just kidding). I was wondering, what do you guys think are some great movies that fall apart in the third act? Examples for me are Signs and From Dusk Till Dawn. Secondly, the opposite: movies that you considered turning off but then the third act saved it? Examples for me are Hardcore Henry and The Prestige. – Donnie from Florida   Hello /Film team, as a self-proclaimed film buff, I'm a firm believer that movies are capable of shaping one's life. With that, I'd like to know what are some "life changing" films which you guys can recommend? By "life changing" films, I'm pertaining to films that you guys have personally resonated to, so much so that it changed the way you perceive life or how you treat other people. I'd love to have an insight as to what films shaped the life of my favourite movie critics. Love the podcast, love your works, and thank you! – James from Manila, Philippines   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.  You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (RSS).  Send your feedback, questions, comments and concerns to us at peter@slashfilm.com. Introduction! Thanks for the warm and overwhelming support on the return! Chapter 007 Recap Parzival has an epiphany that his home school planet of Ludus is actually the resting place of the Tomb of Horrors. After exploiting away to travel there without zero credits, he manages to find the entrance and makes his way in, ready for the perils that lie ahead. Chapter 0008 Summary With the help of a map from the Tomb of Horrors module, Parzival makes his way through the treacherous tomb avoiding traps and monsters and collecting a heavy amount of gold pieces along the way. He's eventually confronted by Acererak who challenges him to a best 2 out of 3 game of Joust, the classic arcade game. Parzival bests Acererak winning the copper key along with a clue to the first gate but before he's able to leave the Tomb of Horrors, he's stopped short of the entrance by a mysterious figure who making their way inside as well… Chapter 0008 Narrative  Parzival uses his map to navigate through the ToH and avoid most of the traps and monsters Levels up like a few types of classes; monster xp vs GP xp; gp xp converts to OASIS credits He eventually makes his way to the Pillared Throne Room where he sees a throne and Acereak sitting there which is a break from the D&D module The voices inside our heads here - what did you hear when you read the booK? "Not horses," he replied, stepping away from his throne. "Birds." The rules to win a copper key, best two out of three. Of course, Parzival had honed his skills over time and credits Aech as it was his favorite (and former) game used to settle asinine pop culture disputes, but did you ever take issue with just how good Wade/Parzival was at everything? I've seen some of the negative criticism from people who didn't paritcularly like the novel and it's a go-to for a lot of those people. Parzival gets his arse handed to him in match #1; but then asks to play on the other side in order to win games 2 and 3 After the second win, Acererak pounds on the side of the cabinet smashing into pixles and graciously congratulates Parzival before taking the form of Anorak. Anaorak hands him the copper key, and Parzival notice two lines of text etched into the key reading, “What you seek lies hidden in the trash on the deepest level of Daggorath.” He immediately knows exactly what this hints refers to and has a hunch that he needs to travel to Middletown, a re-creation of Halliday's hometown as a boy. There, in Halliday's old home, he would find a "Dungeons of Daggorath" game and somehow that would lead him to the first gate to use the copper key on. All he needed to do now was get out of the Tomb of Horrors and make his way immediately there, but just as he was leaving the tomb, he is confronted by the silhouette of another avatar… The Pop!  Reference: “My flashlight reached into the darkness ahead, flickering off the damp stone walls. Even if someone has never watched an Italian Western, there's at least a good chance they've heard the soundtrack or score from one. While Lee has featured some tracks from Italian Westerns before on the show, he's never done a dedicated look at the genre. This will be part one of three shows attempting to cover the scope of music that came from the Italian Westerns. Episode one is focused on selections that have vocalists on the tracks singing a song of some sort (note: the typical chorus of unintelligible chanting found on many Italian Western scores does not count in this case). As mentioned before, in some cases, you'll encounter a track that has been featured on a previous episode, but the majority of these shows will be featuring new material. Also, although he states on the episode that he was trying to keep this episode within the usual confines of an hour runtime, he quickly discovered the folly of that, as there is too much great music to play. Expect all of the episodes in this series to be as long as they have to be. --A Gringo Like Me from "Gunfight at Red Sands" (1963) --Ennio Morricone w/Peter Tevis --The Return of Ringo from "The Return of Ringo" (1965) --Ennio Morricone w/Maurizio Graf --A Lone and Angry Man from "A Coffin for the Sheriff" (1965) --Francesco De Masi w/Peter Tevis --Ya Me Voy from "A Bullet for the General" (1966) --Luis Bacalov w/Ramon Mereles --Texas, Adios from "Texas, Adios" (1966) --Anton Garcia Abril w/Don Powell --Django from "Django" (1966) --Luis Bacalov w/Rocky Roberts --For a Gunshot from "Little Rita of the West" (1967) --Roberto Gigli w/Rita Pavone--Who Is The Man? from "A Taste of Death" (1968) --Francesco De Masi; Alessandro Alessandroni & Giulia De Mutiis w/Raoul Lovecchio --Just A Coward from "And Now... Lee returns for a second look at music from films inspired by "Alien" and "Aliens". While there are a billion of these rip-off films, Lee quickly discovered when attempting to source the music, most of these films just don't have available soundtracks/scores, and even the ones that do usually only come from sources of dubious quality. "Alien" (1979) and its sequel "Aliens" (1986) have influenced countless films in their wake. They both have possibly created, and definitely have made previously existing tropes popular, cementing them into pop culture to the extent that one can easily recognise an "'Alien' formula" in many different films, regardless of setting. In this episode Lee explores the soundtracks and scores of films that clearly display this formula. Star Trek: The Motion Picture's 40th Anniversary.    After its cancellation in 1969, Star Trek fans didn't have many options for new adventures of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise aside from a few comics and novels, and a short lived Saturday morning animated series. Even with very limited new material, television reruns fanned the flames of fandom. Star Trek conventions began to pop up, and one burning question that every fan asked was whether or not their show would return to television. Attributed by many to the success of Star Wars, Paramount shelved the plans of a new series in favor of a big screen voyage. Over the years, the first movie of the franchise has been very divisive among fans. While there are many people who pan the film, there are just as many loyal lovers who continue to champion the originality of the movie. Now, with the 40th anniversary upon us, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is having a renaissance with many people giving it a new look with a fresh perspective. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Neil Shurley to discuss the score to the first Star Trek film. In addition to the main bookend hosts, we have 14 additional guests comment on the music and the film itself. We discuss our impressions on the film and how our opinions have changed, our thoughts on Goldsmith, and the place of The Motion Picture in the current Star Trek landscape.

Melodic Treks: A Star Trek Music Podcast

The Mephisto Waltz with John Takis. *I would like to apologize as there are some audio issues in this episode. Released in 1971, The Mephisto Waltz was almost a response to the cult hit Rosemary's Baby. In this film,  Alan Alda plays a music journalist named Myles Clarkson, whose career as a piano player came to an end when his debut concert received terrible reviews. Then, Clarkson and his wife find themselves on the path of the Macabre when an aging pianist wants to trade souls with Myles so that he can become immortal. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by film score journalist Jon Takis to take a deep dive into Jerry Goldsmith's score to the film The Mephisto Waltz. We compare it to two of his other scores, Planet of the Apes and "The Invaders," an episode of The Twilight Zone. We talk about his techniques used for this score, including over dubbing, playing cues backwards, and the unique sound known as "The Lion's Roar," and determine that this is a strong contender for Goldsmith's creepiest score.
