In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're talking about covers – those magical moments where one artist takes another's song and makes it their own…Wait, we said that in the monologue of last episode. Well it's true! We had so many songs to talk about that we decided to jump back into the trenches and talk about more of those moments where one artist grabs a song and turns it upside down, inside out, or straight into gold…or garbage. We still have a lot to say on this topic since we didn't get to discuss Jeff Buckley's haunting version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, Manfred Mann having a number one hit with a Springsteen song while Springsteen has never had a number one hit himself, Weezer and Toto covering each other, Whitney Houston's enormous hit with a Dolly Parton song, and more. And as always, we've got some thoughts on music news and a song to send to the electric chair. It's our first ever two part episode so sit your butt down and turn that volume UP. "Harmoniegesänge machen was mit mir!" Also bretonisch-keltische Einflüsse, gemischt mit Rock. […] – Katharina Heinius 1974 ist das Album "I've Got My Own Album To Do" entstanden, also in der Zeit, bevor Ron Wood Teil der Rolling Stones geworden ist. "The Wick" lag im etwas abgelegenen Londoner Westen, in Richmond. This week's guest is very grounded. That could be because he's British. Or it could be because his career spans several decades. Welcome the singer and guitarist for Kula Shaker, Crispian Mills. This episode is so interesting. Crispian talks about growing up in a family rooted in entertainment. He started playing gigs in pubs at a pretty young age. In fact, his first gig was with Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. But success wasn't instant. He reveals how one of his earliest pub gigs didn't go over so well. He played with friend and former podcast guest Lora Logic in the reformed version of X-Ray Spex. And when you give it a listen, you can tell it's him. Crispian talks about forming Kula Shaker and why he became the singer. I learn the truth about Cricklewood, the wild success of the band's debut album, K, and how it affected the band. It probably didn't help that they headlined Glastonbury twice in one weekend. It was due to Neil Young's finger injury, but it still means that Sting opened for Kula Shaker once. The band broke up and reformed. Crispian talks about life during the gap and how the band reformed. They've been expanding their sound ever since and have just recently released one of their best tracks ever. Look for a new album soon. Follow them @kulashakerofficial on Instagram. Check out their new music at kulashaker.co.uk, on Spotify or wherever you get new music. Look for tour dates! Follow us @performanceanx on socials. Grab our merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. The show this time is devoted mostly to that ill-defined category “related music.” In particular, I am taking a long, nostalgic retrospection of the music I was listening to or interested in before I discovered progressive rock or while I was discovering progressive rock. These are songs playing on the radio, performed on TV, and otherwise in the general atmosphere of life in Southern California around a half century ago. The music comes from 1966 to 1978, and prog listeners consider many of these songs to closely tied to progressive rock. I also have an In Memoriam feature for two musicians recently departed. We start the episode with a chat about artists that drastically changed their sound over the years – from the Beatles to Cher to Alanis to Herbie Hancock to Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac to Beyonce. Speaking of artists that changed their sound, how about the Bee Gees? They started out as a folky pop band and changed their sound to R&B in the mid ‘70s to out and out disco by 1977. We have an excellent 1989 Brad Giffen interview with Barry Gibb as he talks about the groups desire to keep going in spite of the backlash they faced after Saturday Night Fever. It cast a long shadow on them, but they endured by writing hit songs for other artists. Then, we have a really fun chat with Jason Mraz from 2012 and 2014. You get a real sense of who he is - an almost old school hippy vibe that’s really endearing. Plus, some audio from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s with the great George Benson – a jazz giant who had lots of commercial success. He has some great insights as well. And then we chat with one of Christopher’s favourite people – Ian Thomas – who has had a whole string of hit records that Canadians know and love – and some of those songs were covered by the likes of Santana, Manfred Mann and America. Ian is one of the newest inductees into the Canadian songwriters Hall Of Fame – which is coming up on Fri, Oct 17 at the Meridian Centre in Toronto. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. Brad Zerbo and Jaytriot dive headfirst into the 1960s British Invasion, tracing how the Beatles' 1964 debut on The Ed Sullivan Show sparked a cultural explosion. They explore how the mop-top Beatles injected post-JFK-assassination America with joy and charisma, setting the stage for a flood of UK acts. From the Stones' bluesy swagger and the Who's proto-punk chaos to the Kinks' distorted riffs and the Zombies' haunting grooves, the hosts highlight how British bands reshaped American music while borrowing from U.S. blues and R&B. They dig into stories of staged hysteria, covers that outshone originals, and fights that got the Kinks banned from touring America. Along the way, they spin tracks from the Animals, Manfred Mann, the Yardbirds, and the Spencer Davis Group, tying it all to the seismic shifts in rock history. With personal anecdotes, humor, and even a nod to the “Paul is dead” rabbit hole, this episode captures how the British Invasion forever altered music, culture, and youth identity.

ROB & JEREMY interview CHRIS SLADE Chris Slade had an incredible career in music spanning 6 decades! Chris is from Wales and grew up 6 miles from where Tom Jones grew up. So it only was right that Chris became Tom Jones drummer (Chris was on Tom's first 6 albums including LIve in Vegas) Chris went on to form Manfred Mann's Earth Band (Blinded by the Light) ... was asked to join a new supergroup THE FIRM (in the 80s with Jimmy Page & Paul Rodgers), was in ASIA, URIAH HEEP... ... and one of the greatest bands of all time ... AC/DC. Chris was on their RAZOR'S EDGE album which he played drums on the legendary song Thunderstruck! He also recorded "big gun" for the Swartzenegger movie "Last Action Hero". He joined AC/DC on their ROCK or BUST world tour in 2015. He was in AC/DC up until 2020 when Phil Rudd rejoined. We only had about 35 minutes to talk to Chris so we couldn't cover his whole career (who could) but we got to talk drum technique, auditioning for AC/DC, being asked to join The Firm and other stuff including who makes the best tea and if Chris could go back in time where would it be and when? Also hear Chris' response when Jimmy Page told him (while recording with Tom Jones) what he was going to call his next band ... you may have heard of them? A good fun interview! Paul Jones is one of British music's true originals—a singer, songwriter, harmonica player, actor, broadcaster, and blues pioneer whose career has spanned over six decades. Best known as the original frontman of Manfred Mann, Paul helped define the sound of the '60s British Invasion. But there's so much more to his story than pop success.Born Paul Pond in Portsmouth in 1942, Paul had a bright academic future—earning a place at Oxford. But it was the blues, not the books, that really captured his heart. Drawn to the raw emotion of American R&B and blues, he immersed himself in music, gigging in London clubs and building ties with future legends like Alexis Korner, Cyril Davies, and Brian Jones. In fact, Paul was briefly approached to front a little band called The Rolling Stones. He turned them down. Instead, he chose a different path. Rebranded as Paul Jones , he joined a jazz-influenced band led by South African keyboardist Manfred Mann. The group took on the name and quickly became one of the sharpest acts on the British scene. The band scored their first big hit with “5-4-3-2-1,” then came “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” It was an instant smash—hitting number one in both the UK and the US and cementing the band's place in pop history. Paul Jones became a household name, fronting a string of hits including “Sha La La,” “Come Tomorrow,” and “Pretty Flamingo.” But just as things were peaking, Paul shocked fans by stepping away from Manfred Mann in '66. He didn't want to be boxed into pop stardom. His first solo release, “I've Been a Bad, Bad Boy,” was a top 10 hit, and not long after, he starred in the film Privilege. From there, Paul split his time between stage and studio. He released a number of solo albums and never chased the pop charts, choosing instead to focus on artistry and authenticity. In the late '70s, Jones experienced a major musical rebirth. Alongside former bandmate Tom McGuinness, he co-founded The Blues Band—a group that would lead a new wave of British blues. Their first record, The Official Blues Band Bootleg Album, was self-released when no label wanted it. But it quickly found a fanbase and helped kick-start a blues revival in the UK. Over the years, The Blues Band became a cult favourite, recording over 20 albums and touring consistently for decades. Jones, with his fiery harmonica and soulful voice, became a beloved figure in the blues world. As if that weren't enough, Jones also became a prominent broadcaster. In 1986, he began hosting The Blues Show with Paul Jones on BBC Radio 2—a program that would run for 32 years. His warm, knowledgeable voice introduced listeners to everyone from blues giants like B.B. King and Muddy Waters to new acts keeping the genre alive. His influence on the blues scene through radio is as significant as his work on stage. In the 2000s, Jones released the critically acclaimed album Starting All Over Again, featuring collaborations with soul legends like Percy Sledge and Eric Bibb. It was a masterclass in classic songwriting, vocal nuance, and heartfelt delivery—proof that Paul Jones had lost none of his fire.Throughout his career, Jones worked with a who's who of music royalty: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Mick Abrahams, and more. Whether singing, playing harmonica, or narrating the story of the blues, he brought depth, grace, and passion to every project.Later in life, Paul experienced a personal transformation. He became a born-again Christian and began to incorporate gospel into his musical world. His faith added a new layer to his performances, blending spirit and soul with honesty and humility. From Oxford scholar to '60s heartthrob, from blues crusader to BBC staple, Paul Jones has never stood still. He turned down the Rolling Stones, left a hit band at its height, helped revive the blues, and became a trusted voice for generations of listeners. Always evolving, always authentic—Paul Jones is one of the great unsung heroes of British music.

The concept of the prog artist going pop is so well-known that it's almost a cliche. We still love you, Phil Collins! But what about the inverse? What happens when our favorite pop bands and artists get the "prog bug" and go off the deep end? This is a concept that almost nobody talks about but greatly interests us here at ATTT HQ. It doesn't always work, but when Pop Goes Prog and it does work, the results can be an artist-or-band-career-defining moment. Thankfully we have access to a couple of mensches that know their pop and know their prog. The great Fernando Perdomo and the also great Matt Tecu join for what turned out to be a ridiculous good time in TOP TEN TIMES POP WENT PROG. Picks 10-6 are featured here in Part 1. Fernando & Matt's excellent album "Art" is out there on all of the streaming places, but you should really check it out on Bandcamp:https://fernandoperdomo.bandcamp.com/album/artWe've lowered our prices, but not our standards over at the ATTT Patreon! Jimmy Page was in rough shape by the end of Led Zeppelin. His addictions had ravaged his body and he didn't contribute nearly as much to 1979's In Through The Out Door as he did all previous Zeppelin records. After the death of John Bonham, Jimmy fulfilled his obligations to release Coda, provided the soundtrack to Death Wish 2 as a favor to his neighbor and embarked on a brief fundraiser tour with lots of legends - The ARMS Tour. But he hadn't been very creative and wasn't keeping himself in match shape. After spending some time with his Swan Song brother Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), he concocted a plan to put together a new supergroup for the 80s. WIth Rodgers handling vocal and primary songwriter duties, Jimmy also enlisted Chris Slade (Tom Jones, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, AC/DC, UAWIL #91 guest) and "The Fretless Monster" Tony Franklin who he worked with on Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? This powerful lineup was to be the vehicle that would rejuvenate Jimmy Page and put him back on the road to superstardom. However, Page's contributions weren't what fans had come to expect from the guitar hero and it seemed that Jimmy was a bit out of place in a world dominated by MTV. Single Radioactive was an AOR hit and showcased a bit of what the band could do, ultimately helping their self-titled debut to gold status in the US. But most of the album is uneven and Page isn't showing up with the killer solos that were his calling card. However, Tony Franklin is an absolute monster on this record, filling in the gaps that Page leaves between his flourishes and playing well off the ever steady Slade. While Rodgers vocals are as strong as ever, his songwriting doesn't quite live up to the standard of his previous bands. It was a solid debut which led to a strong sophomore effort in Mean Business (1986) but because it celebrates it's 40th on February 11, 2025, we thought we'd take a hard look at The Firm and why it didn't hit the heights we all hoped it would Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Today I sit down with legendary drummer Chris Slade. Chris started out his professional career at 16 years old playing drums for Tom Jones. From there he became a founding member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording 8 studio albums from 1972 to 1978. After a 1 year tour with the great David Gilmour another legend Jimmy Page called him to join the super group The Firm. Most people really know Chris from his time in AC/DC recording and touring on the smash hit record The Razors Edge. That record was loaded with hits including Thunderstuck, Moneytalks and Are You Ready. After the return of Phil Rudd, Chris moved on and played in his own group until 2015 when he was asked to return to AC/DC after Phil Rudd had legal problems. Check out Chris Slade Timeline on all streaming platforms. Hope you guys enjoy this episode and if you are a big AC/DC fan check out my interviews with all of AC/DC right here on my YouTube channel.
