By 1980, Judas Priest were ready to take on all the world! Fresh off their classic live album Unleashed In The East, Priest were ready to conquer America and the world with a more pop sound. Priest hit the charts with songs like Living After Midnight and Breaking The Law and offered new anthems to the teenage set with United and Metal Gods. But they stayed true to their heavy metal roots with songs like Rapid Fire and Steeler. Rob Halford shows off his chops and range on songs like The Rage as Ian Hill offers up a fun and memorable bass line. While we don't see much of the dueling solos between KK Downing and Glenn Tipton as would come to be familiar with on most of their 80s and latter day albums, they each show off their individual styles here while doing what's best for the songs. And the addition of Dave Holland on the drums solidified the classic 80s Priest lineup that would help them conquer the US and the world. They also forayed into making videos with the help of Julien Temple, much to the delight of Beavis & Butthead. This album helped propel Judas Priest and heavy metal onto a bigger stage and laid the foundation for the band's success in the 1980s and beyond. Yes, this is a Jeopardy! podcast, and yes, John reminisces about the old softcore pornography show "The Red Shoe Diaries", which yes, does have an episode with Matt Leblanc in it. But enough about that, it's Alex DeFrank week on the show as the former Sports Jeopardy! champ goes on an excellent run and Ken really lets loose this week with multiple interjections including allowing Alex the joy of doing a Butt-Head impression on the Alex Trebek stage. Plus, a Joanna Newsom anecdote leads to follow-up from Mr. Joanna Newsom himself, Andy Samberg, J! fans are upset with clues about Kanye, and we dive deep on Copenhagen the Horse. Donate to the show at patreon.com/jeopardypodcast to not only support the show, but also to get our latest bonus episode: an interview with Alison Betts! One of our fave players from the last year, Alison tells us all about her initial J! run, her ToC prep, and the whole Foghorn Leghorn thing. Social Discipline is incredibly excited to present the adventurous life of Jeff Perkins, a hidden gem of the American underground. This massive five-hour podcast, recorded in Berlin in June 2024, explores his fascinating journey—no one else can claim to have performed for Yoko Ono and John Cage, created legendary light shows with The Velvet Underground, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Germs, programmed the first Kenneth Anger retrospective in L.A., and encountered both Charles Manson and members of the satanic cult The Process. Jeff joined the military in the 1960s and was stationed in Tokyo, where he met Yoko Ono in the early '60s. He began performing some of her pieces there and later in New York. Perkins also filmed Ono's classic Film No. 4 (Bottoms), a Fluxus work. His first independent contribution to the Fluxfilm Anthology was Shout. He was at the heart of the 1960s New York avant-garde scene, surrounded by figures like La Monte Young, Jack Smith, and Angus MacLise. In January 1967, Perkins moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a programmer at Cinematheque 16. Influenced by Tony Conrad's The Flicker, he began producing powerful light shows and collaborated with bands throughout the '60s and '70s—ranging from The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Grateful Dead to the punk scene with X and The Germs. He even refused to do a show for the Sex Pistols due to a disagreement with the promoter. Perkins was a close friend of Terry Jennings and, in fact, entrusted his archive to La Monte Young. While in L.A., he was neighbors with the artist James Turrell. In 1980, Perkins moved back to New York and started a loft project just a block away from Ground Zero, reminiscent of George Maciunas' artist loft spaces. To finance it, he worked as a cab driver. He remained deeply connected to cinema, particularly through Anthology Film Archives, where he proposed a John Cassavetes retrospective to Jonas Mekas and later became a manager. In 1994, Nam June Paik—who coined the term “The Fluxus cab driver” for Perkins—invited him to perform at Anthology Film Archives in a homage to Yoko Ono. His performance, Butthead, was a great success. His legendary loft became a hub where one could easily encounter visiting filmmakers like Pedro Costa and Albert Serra. In 1989, Perkins organized a series of lectures at Anthology Film Archives with Henry Flynt and Tony Conrad, reuniting the two after years of estrangement. Flynt would become a lifelong friend. In 2008, during the financial crisis, when I lived with Jeff, we organized a series of four-hour lectures by Flynt in the loft's kitchen, focusing on the crisis and communist economics. I vividly remember Tony Conrad attending one of them in his elegant pajamas. Perkins has directed two critically acclaimed films—one on abstract painter Sam Francis and another on the legendary Fluxus figure George Maciunas. He is currently finishing editing a film about Henry Flynt in Berlin. This podcast concludes with an excerpt from his piece Movies for the Blind, which features recordings of conversations with passengers from his time as a New York cab driver.

patreon.com/callchelseaperetti Chelsea explores ASMR—crunchy snacks, plastic sounds, and the perils of ASMR gatekeeping—while fielding calls on parenting through calamities, AQI confusion, and the fleeting magic of sumo oranges. A caller stuck in traffic gets pulled into an immigration deep dive and sings classical Indian music, Chelsea contemplates the hamster wheel of social media, liberals hating each other, and whether a pig eating Pop Rocks would be the ultimate ASMR. Along the way, she hangs up on an Olympian, questions a possible fart sound, and revisits Beavis & Butthead as a coping mechanism.

Show Notes Episode 472: “Are You Threatening Me?!” This week Host Dave Bledsoe got blasted on Espresso Martinis when he gatecrashed a charity fundraiser and was ejected after screaming he needed “TP for his bunghole” (Just an average Tuesday afternoon.) On the show this week we took a look at the cultural high water mark of 90's television: Beavis and Butthead. Along the way we discovered that Dave tried to murder his cousin with fireworks. (Or at least traumatize him for life.) Then we dove right into the story with a short history of animation from Neanderthals to Walt Disney. (We asked him to stop, he just won't!) Then we meet Mike Judge, a Baby Boomer who was so Gen X he created pretty much all Gen X comedy culture. (Dave made Gavin wear a Winger t-shirt in the studio all week.) Then we learned all the ways that Beavis and Butthead were destroying the youth of America and why none of them were things that actually happened. Finally we wrapped up with an interesting theory that Mike Judge might just be a prophet. Our Sponsor this week is the Thomas Anderson School for Juvenile Delinquents, got kids whacking off in your tool shed, you send them to Thom. 00:00 Introductions 00:50 Russia in American Elections 12:05 Football 20:48 Colt & Colin Gray 29:43 Tucker Carlson 34:01 Dear Abby —Comedian Luke Borchard pops by for a visit. —Oh, the hilarity. Anyone with an IQ above 70 knows that Tim Pool and his ilk are horrible people with horrible takes on (pretty much) every subject, but to have it confirmed that they were unwitting Russian assets? So, so funny. When you can't tell the difference between your incredibly stupid thoughts/ideas, and that of Russian propaganda, you might want to take a long, hard look in the mirror. None of them will, but they should. Hopefully this gets bigger. Wouldn't it be hilarious to find out that bags of hot garbage like Charlie Kirk and/or Ben Shapiro were duped, too? —The Washington Commanders fired Rael Enteen, their vice president of content. Why? Because he accidentally told the truth while being set up by an undercover reporter. Enter thought he was on a date, but it was a sting. The “reporter” (used loosely) got him to say out loud what everyone already knew about the NFL: they're only in it for the money. But, when honesty rears its ugly head, scapegoats must be sacrificed. That's the way of the corporate world. —Colt Gray is a piece of human garbage who (allegedly) shot up a school in Georgia. His dad, Colin, is a piece of human garbage who (allegedly?) bought him the gun. Well, now they're both being charged in the murders, and, fingers crossed, they'll both be found guilty and be in jail forever. If Republicans aren't going to do anything about gun violence—JD vance said it's a “fact of life,” and Trump said people need to “get over it”—then maybe holding parents accountable for the actions of their a-hole kids can help turn the tide. Here's hoping. (A side discussion involves the infamous 1990s era case where a child burned down a mobile home in a trailer park after supposedly watching Beavis & Butthead.) —Tucker Carlson is obviously a Russian agent, knowingly or unknowingly, but did you also know he's a Nazi apologist? Well, he is, because Tucker had a guest on his podcast who tried to paint Winston Churchill as the villain of World War II, and explained that the holocaust was a humanitarian action taken by the Nazis. No. Really. A dude went on a podcast and said that, and Tucker nodded along thoughtfully. Because that's what the worst people on the planet do. —What do you do when you're too dumb to make an important decision? You write to an online advice columnist. This one made me think of Jake, so I put on my Sherlock Holmes cap and tried to suss out the state of his marriage. Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. Find Jake at @jakevevera Find nathan at nathantimmel.com

[School of Movies 2024] After many years of thinking about how to tackle these two absolute idiots, we found the best angle for us. Ostensibly this is about the 1996 movie, which still holds up today and makes for an appealing, surprisingly general-audience-friendly and brisk hour and 21-minute comedy. This is an achievement, considering their extremely sketchy first incarnation as a pair of cruelly observed Texas teenagers being horrible to frogs. What Sharon and I do here is fill out the absence of texture in this rare 2D American-animated adult(ish) film by delving into who the boys are, and their pitiful background, as portrayed in various key episodes of the original show, which ran for only four years, but made two comebacks -both solid- with the current one still ongoing on Paramount Plus (which means most people can't see it, or the 2022 sequel movie which propels them into the 21st Century). If you HATE Beavis & Butt-Head this podcast probably won't change your mind, but if you have never delved into this grubby world or indeed have some fond memories from their mid-90s heyday we may bring you a persistent giggle. 10 Recommended Beavis & Butt-Head Episodes to Watch No Laughing (S2E12) The Great Cornholio (S4E31) Prank Call (S6E13) Walkathon (S5E7) Butt Flambé (S7E28) Candy Sale (S5E23) Werewolves of Highland (S8E1) Dumb Design (S8E12) It's a Miserable Life (S6E8) Choke (S5E4)
