The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 32nd Disney animated feature film and the fifth produced during the Disney Renaissance, it is inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet with elements from the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses and Disney's 1942 film Bambi. The film was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff (in their feature directorial debuts) and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, and Robert Guillaume. Its original songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer. The film has led to many derived works, such as a Broadway adaptation in 1997; two direct-to-video follow-ups—the sequel, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998), and the prequel/parallel, The Lion King 1½ (2004); two television series, Timon and Pumbaa and The Lion Guard; and a photorealistic remake in 2019, which also became the highest-grossing animated film at the time of its release. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The Lion King is the first Disney film to have been dubbed in Zulu, the only African language aside from Arabic to have been used for a feature-length Disney dub. The Lion King is a 2019 American musical drama film directed and co-produced by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Fairview Entertainment. It is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney's traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. The film stars the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and James Earl Jones reprising his role from the original film. Plans for a remake of 1994's The Lion King were confirmed in September 2016 with Favreau attached to directed following box office successes for Disney remakes such as The Jungle Book (2016), which was also directed by Favreau. Disney hired Nathanson to write the screenplay in October 2016. Favreau was inspired by certain roles of characters in the Broadway adaptation and developed upon elements of the original film's story. Much of the main cast signed in early 2017, and principal photography began in mid-2017 on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles. The "virtual-reality tools" utilized in The Jungle Book's cinematography were used to a greater degree during filming of The Lion King. Composers Hans Zimmer, Elton John, and lyricist Tim Rice, all of whom worked on the original's soundtrack, returned to compose the score alongside Knowles-Carter, who assisted John in the reworking of the soundtrack and wrote a new song for the film, titled "Spirit", which she also performed. The film serves as the final credit for editor Mark Livolsi, and it is dedicated to his memory. With an estimated budget of around $260 million, The Lion King is one of the most expensive films ever made. In this episode, I spoke with author Greg Ehrbar regarding his book "Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records". Around the world there are grandparents, parents, and children who can still sing ditties by Tigger or Baloo the Bear or the Seven Dwarves. This staying power and global reach is in large part a testimony to the pizzazz of performers, songwriters, and other creative artists who worked with Walt Disney Records.

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join me as I head to EPCOT to see for the first time and bid farewell to the nighttime spectacular Harmonious on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Attraction audio recorded on February 25, 2023. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we experience EPCOT's current (as of this recording in March of 2023) nighttime spectacular Harmonious. There are no age or height requirements for Harmonious and the guide map describes it by saying, “Discover how Disney music and stories have the power to bring people from all around the world together to unlock the magic of possibility.” There is no thrill level listed for this attraction. Before we head to World Showcase Lagoon, here are 5 more fast facts about Harmonious. 1. Harmonious was announced at the D23 Destination D event in 2018. It was set to replace EPCOT Forever in 2020 but was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. After a few test performances, Harmonious officially debuted on October 1, 2021. The show replaced Epcot Forever which we covered on episode 94 of this podcast. 2. The show make use of pyrotechnics, choreographed water fountains, lasers, searchlights, floating set pieces and LED screens 3. The show's barges are collectively known as The Compass. The four arc-shaped barges are named after the nearest intersecting World Showcase pavilion. They are Mexico, Germany, Canada and France. The center platform holds a six story tall ring that houses a high pressure water curtain for show projections. 4. An album featuring the show's soundtrack was released by Walt Disney Records on October 29, 2021. 5. On September 11, 2022, Disney announced that Harmonious would have it's last performance on April 2, 2023, to be replaced by the returning Epcot Forever. Let's check out Harmonious at EPCOT. This recording captures the first (and last) time I'll be seeing the show so I'll give you my thoughts afterwards. This is a binaural recording so If you have headphones, put them on now as we experience Harmonious at Walt Disney World's EPCOT! It's hard to think of another songbook in Disney's oeuvre that has put a dent in pop culture quite like Encanto, the latest from Walt Disney Animation Studios. "We Don't Talk About Bruno," "The Family Madrigal," "Surface Pressure," all songs that have topped Billboard charts and dominated TikTok for more than a year now, courtesy of Hamilton scribe Lin-Manuel Miranda. But an equally vital part of Encanto's inviting world, an enchanted casita in which the vibrant members of the Madrigal family live and dream, is the orchestral score courtesy of Germaine Franco. It's the score that made Franco an Oscar nominee, only the sixth woman in Oscar history to be nominated for Best Original Score (and the first Latina). And now, that same score is up for a Grammy for Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, alongside many of the same big names she competed against for the Academy Award earlier this year: Hans Zimmer, Jonny Greenwood, and Nicholas Britell. Germaine's score for Encanto is inviting and magical, making expert use of a variety of Latinx instruments and musical styles to fill in the many corners of the Madrigal family tree. Colombian rhythms mix with samba and cumbia, alongside more vital, traditional orchestral instrumentation. It's a melting pot of influences that nonetheless span vast corners of the Latinx umbrella, making for a sound as narratively diverse as it is thematically appropriate. Now, we welcome Germaine Franco to the show to discuss her score for Encanto and more. You can find Germaine Franco at her official website here. Encanto is currently streaming on Disney+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Walt Disney Records.

It's time for our Oscars series, and we're kicking our review of the Oscar movies of 1991 with a horror film unlike any other. In fact, this movie really isn't a serial killer or slasher film at all; it's more of a psychological journey wrapped in a horror package. In fact, if you only know the cultural signposts from the film, you'd be hard pressed to realize that the film's main character isn't it's iconic anti-hero or its dark, horribly twisted villain. No, it's the outstanding performance of Jodie Foster and the writing of Clarice Starling that truly make the film come alive. It just helps that Anthony Hopkins gives us a masterful, iconic performance to match and foil. Actor and musician Mitchel Musso (@mitchelmusso) joins Justin on the podcast this week with his NEW MUSIC after taking some time away from the big screen. The Hannah Montana star opens up candidly about how he purposely “chose himself first” in order to bring the best version of himself to everyone in his life. It's no secret that all of us have thought about how loving ourselves will in turn nurture the other areas of our life, well, we're in luck on this episode because Mitchel is a walking example of how it really does work! Mitchel has returned to the spotlight with new original music inspired by his experiences with love, heartbreak, emotional ups and downs, and life accomplishments. Most recently, he released the first single “Drank” off his upcoming Mixtape “Ghost”. Mitchel starred in three successful Disney projects, “Hannah Montana,” “Pair of Kings,” and “Phineas and Ferb,” as well as Columbia Pictures' “Monster House.” Mitchel began his music career at a young age, releasing his first album through Walt Disney Records, but didn't find his true passion and sound until he stripped the "work" away from the music, and began making music stemming from his life's inspirations. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST COMPOSER: Alan Menken LYRICIST: Howard Ashman, Tim Rice BOOK: Linda Woolverton SOURCE: Disney's animated film Beauty and The Beast (1991) DIRECTOR: Robert Jess Roth CHOREOGRAPHER: Matt West PRINCIPLE CAST: Gary Beach (Lumiere), Susan Egan (Belle), Terrence Mann (Beast) OPENING DATE: Apr 18, 1994 CLOSING DATE: Jul 29, 2007 PERFORMANCES: 5,462 SYNOPSIS: Belle is a young girl who stumbles into a castle and is kept captive by its owner, a monster who was once a prince. Along with his staff, once humans now physical objects due to a witch's curse, Belle will try to teach the Beast to love again before the Prince permanently stays as a monster. This episode traces the way musical theatre artists Alan Menken and Howard Ashman reinvigorated the mass-appeal of Disney's animated films, which in turn lead to a profitable pipeline between the children's media conglomerate and New York City, beginning with a stage adaptation of the animated box office hit, Beauty and the Beast. The planned 1994 opening of Beauty and the Beast at the Palace Theatre directly influenced Mayor Rudy Giuliani's prioritization of the commercial cleansing of Times Square, Disney's exclusive access to the newly-renovated New Amsterdam Theatre, and the creation of Disney Theatrical Productions, which continues to adapt Disney films for the stage. Though critically panned, Eden Hildebrand demonstrates how the musical signaled a new age for Broadway's reliance on spectacle, a future for family-friendly tourist entertainment, and a new definition of robust merchandising presence in the commercial theatre. Eden Hildebrand is a Canadian performer, choreographer, director, and pedagogue. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University, and both a Bachelor of Arts in Dance (with a concentration in Choreography and Performance) and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Calgary. Enduring nine surgeries in a six-month period in an effort to save the leg, the cancer returned more aggressively than the original diagnosis. He was faced with the ultimate decision of amputation in order to stop the cancer and save his life, as well as undergoing chemotherapy for sixteen months. Eighteen months after the amputation, and only two days after receiving his “peg-leg”, Evan was tapping again. SOURCES Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical, Original Cast Recording. This week on The Children's Hour we chat with Julie from Ants on a Log, a band that performs music for children and other childlike people that advocates for positivity, social justice, and silliness through song. This 2-person band consists of Julie and Anya from Philadelphia, PA. The two began writing together, finding driving harmonies and song topics that were silly, serious, environmental, feminist, gender-bending, and just plain fun. In their off-stage lives, Julie is a music therapist and Anya is an elementary science teacher. Their powers combined make for smart and socially conscious folk, a delight for children and adults of all ages. The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough, 1779 This week we discuss the importance of self-realization, and the freedom in being seen for who you are. Many of Ants on a Log songs challenge societal archetypes, such as girls have long hair and boys have short hair - they even have a song called Some Girls Have Short Hair! We visit the topic of pronouns and how they are important and respectful of an individual. Ants even has a mix less on their website called "Practice Your Pronouns". Julie also offers their experience using non-binary pronouns. Curious: Think Outside the Pipeline! is Ants on a Log's award-winning musical story of two siblings who organize their neighbors to fight for clean air. The soundtrack was released in 2019, and the movie was released in 2021. The script is available for schools and communities to perform, and the movie is available for screenings. Randy Thornton is a long-time producer and restorer of Disney music. In his nearly 29 years with Walt Disney Records, he has received numerous recording industry awards including ten Gold Records, four platinum records, six Grammy nominations and one Grammy win. Randy is the producer of the "Lost Chords," a collection of songs originally written for classic Disney animated films like "Peter Pan" and "Cinderella" that never made it into the final productions. Some of those "Lost Chords" found their way into one of Randy's other projects, "The Legacy Collection." "The Legacy Collection" is a series of collectible CDs celebrating the anniversaries of great Disney films like "Fantasia," "Pinocchio," "Lady and the Tramp" and "The Lion King." They're available online from Amazon and at www.DisneyMusicEmporium.com. Currently available only at the Disneyland Resort is the "Disneyland Legacy Collection" set, three CDs celebrating 60 years of Disney theme park magic. Can't make it to Disneyland? No worries. The set will be available online later this month. Each "Legacy Collection" set is handsomely packaged with original cover art by Disney artist Lorelay Bove. The sets also contain song lyrics, concept art and extensive liner notes rich in Disney history. Randy Thornton is an artist who takes great pride in his work. In his conversation with Tim Callaway, he talks at length about his career and his passion for preserving Disney's great music legacy. Randy is Tim's guest today in "The Mouse Castle Lounge." www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

The D23 Expo is coming up August 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center. At a Disney fan gathering where the Walt Disney Studios and Disney Parks and Resorts typically get the lion's share of attention, the Disney Music Group this year will have a much higher profile. DMG oversees the various Disney recording labels like Walt Disney Records and Hollywood Records and also runs Disney Music Publishing. In addition, they manage a very cool website where you can purchase all manner of Disney collectible music items, the Disney Music Emporium. At the D23 Expo, the Disney Music Group and the Disney Music Emporium will present a concert called Disney in Concert: A Silly Symphony Celebration. They'll screen a selection of Walt Disney's famous musical cartoons backed by a 32-piece live orchestra. How cool is that? The concert will tie in with the release of an epic musical boxed set—on vinyl—called The Silly Symphony Collection. Contained in the set will be remastered audio recordings of all 75 Silly Symphony cartoons released between 1929 and 1939. Expo attendees will be the first people able to pre-order the Silly Symphony set. After that, it can be ordered online at the Disney Music Emporium beginning on August 17. The set will list for $399.98 and will include a free digital download. If you pre-order it, you'll also receive a 10” vinyl single with "The Skeleton Dance" on Side A and the "Three Little Pigs" on Side B. Recently, Tim paid a visit to the Walt Disney Studios and sat down with Jon Heely, director of music publishing and concert licensing at the Disney Music Group. They talked about Silly Symphonies, of course, but they also talked about an amazing limited edition book release from the Disney Music Legacy Libraries. It's the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Master Score. And by master score I mean a reproduction of every piece of sheet music from "Snow White" illustrating how the music synchronized with the film. The printed score even includes notations by numerous artists and technicians that helped bring the movie to life. Only 400 of these are being released. The first 200 are available now at the Disney Music Emporium. Another 200 will be available at the D23 Expo. Jon Heely is my first guest in The Mouse Castle Lounge today. I also chat with Randy Thornton with the Disney Music Group and Kevin Augunas, Neil Schield and Jesse Obstbaum with Fairfax Recordings. It's a great time to be a Disney music fan. Enjoy! CORRECTION 8/5/15: When I originally posted this story, I indicated that the notations to the Master Score were made by "Snow White's" original composers, i.e., Frank Churchill, Leigh Harline and Paul Smith. That may be a possibility, but since this was a working document, the truth is a number of artists and sound technicians would also have made notations to the score to assist with the recording and audio synchronization including (possibly) studio engineer Bill Garity and director Wilfred Jackson. We can't be exactly sure who made what notations--but doesn't that make it even more interesting? www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss
