Corman Graduates: Jack Hill Part 1 with Calum Waddell

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in.  Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. Cooper and Nolan aren't messing around this week when they meet FOXY BROWN! This Blaxploitation classic was meant to be a sequel to Coffy, and with the many, MANY things they have in common it really shows. Which is great news for the guys, since they both feel like they rated Coffy too low back in Season 2. Are familiar genre features and the welcome presence of Pam Grier enough to put this thing on top? Or will the absence of hooker fights and a questionable big bad send it straight downtown? The answer is floating around in here somewhere, so open the jar on this episode (featuring a beer from Amsterdam Brewing Co.) and find out!

Launching a one-time holiday box in the 4th quarter is good business. Doing it without running ads isn't. That's why I brought my friend and colleague Josh Coffy of The Ecommerce Alley to talk with us.  Listen to episode 169 for more about why YOU should consider a one-time holiday box.  Do you need to run Facebook Ads?  You should always be building your audience organically. And you should get your audience excited about your one-time holiday boxes organically. But, if you want to maximize the sale of your one-time holiday boxes, you need to use ads.  Josh is an expert on Ecommerce marketing and Meta ads. He says that whether it's now or later, you HAVE to figure out advertising. In order to predictably attract new customers, you have to advertise.  I shared my favorite ads analogy. Ads aren't the base of your marketing strategy. Your base is all of the organic audience building you do. Consistently showing up on social media, engaging with your audience… And ads? They are likee lighter fluid. They take what you've already built and make it burn hotter and faster.  Why run Facebook Ads in the 4th Quarter?  In Q4, people are buying like no other time of the year. Take advantage of the momentum Q4 naturally gives you.  Josh talked about the types of ads you can/should run:  Facebook Ads Explained   Josh had even more recommendations including running purchase-based campaigns and keeping it simple. Start slow and increase your ads budget as sales come in.  Josh walked us through how he would build a campaign for a one-time holiday box no matter what your budget is. He explained “return on ad spend,” what is realistic to expect, and what you need to spend to get to the desired number of box sales.  Subscription box owners must manage their expectations and remove emotion (which is hard). Josh reminded us that marketing is a mathematical equation, not an emotional decision. Ads require a great deal of mental fortitude.  Josh also shared that “ad-dy ads” are working right now. Customers are responding to ads that look like ads.  Getting in Front of More People  As E-commerce business owners, our goal every day is to get in front of more people. As subscription box owners who face cancellations each month as a reality of doing business, growth depends on getting in front of more people.  I asked Josh what advice he had for someone who has never run an ad. He said it might feel like Mt. Everest in front of you. After all, Meta ads can be confusing and expensive. But the only way to get to the top is to start climbing. It's going to be scary but just do it. Start slow and small… but do it.  Join me for this episode as Josh and I nerd out on all things Facebook Ads and how you can use them to maximize sales of your one-time holiday box!  Episode 169 - A One-Time Holiday Box Can Validate Your Subscription Box Idea Find and follow Josh:  The Ecommerce Alley on Facebook The Ecommerce Alley Podcast   Josh Coffy on Instagram Join me in all the places:   Facebook Instagram Launch Your Box with Sarah Website  Are you ready for Launch Your Box? Chained (2012), Honeymoon (2014), and Relic (2020) With over 60 episodes so far in our podcast history, we realized that in all that we covered, we had never covered anything by a woman director. We knew we needed to change that. Going through the history of women directors, we realized that not only wasn't something new, but have been working in the industry since the beginning of film. And in the last two decades, have really started to show their stuff. So to help celebrate Women's History Month, we figured it was well past due that we tackle three films that were directed by women, once again, picking three random titles, but amazed to find just how similar they were to each other, not to mention being very effective in their craft, and storytelling. This week we discuss Coffy! Can this movie blast its way to our 1973 Movie of the Year?Coffy is 91 minutes long…so there you go folks, our 1973 Movie of the Year, for being nearly the conically perfect runtime. We can just run the award over to Ms. Grier's house any time. Literally anytime.Coffy is a simple nurse until her little sister is preyed upon by local drug-selling enthusiasts. Seeking revenge, she finds she has a knack for sort of disassociating and entering a dreamlike state where she is hyper-violent, ruthless, and—it must be said—very cool. Watching this movie makes you feel very American.Over the glorious 91 minutes Coffy, both film and character, swing wildly in tone and focus, going from comically gratuitous nudity, to looney tunes style violence, to emotionally devastating scenes of people fruitlessly begging for their lives or being dragged to death behind a car.At the center of the tornadic violence, nudity, race commentary, gender messaging, shotguns, and tears is Pam Grier. 1973 Pam Grier is on the short list of the most beautiful women to ever exist, and the other women on the list are just different years of Pam Grier. The camera loves Pam Grier, the podcast loves Pam Grier, but Gene Siskel called her performance wooden and awkward. Is this vile calumny to stand? We get into it!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Everyone should have the freedom to decide what's best for themselves and their families, including when it comes to ending a pregnancy. This decision has dire consequences for individual health and safety, and could have harsh repercussions for other landmark decisions.Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health and independence of all Americans. Even if you live in a state where abortion rights are upheld, access to safe medical procedures shouldn't be determined by location, and it shouldn't be the privilege of a small few.You can help by donating to local abortion funds. Innlegget Episode 177: Foxy Brown dukket først opp på Attack of the Killer Kast.

When you think of blaxploitation films, you have to think of her. Her on-screen performances in films such as "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown” made her the original baddie, if you think about it. She would evolve into a well-rounded actress, working with the likes of Spike Lee, Quintin Tarantino, Paul Newman, and the Weinstein brothers. But before she was the woman we all know and love, she was Pammy, a girl from Denver that loved the outdoors. So yes, this episode is dedicated to the love stories of the one and only Pam Grier. Under the microscope this month is the only Tarantino film adapted from source material, I'm talking about Jackie Brown. The movies we will be investigating to see if he simply referenced them in this film or blatantly ripped them off are, Jack Hill's "Coffy" (1973) & "Foxy Brown" (1974). On today's episode of our daily NYFF60 edition, director Elvis Mitchell and executive producer Steven Soderbergh discuss Is That Black Enough For You?!?, a Spotlight selection of this year's festival, with NYFF Executive Director Eugene Hernandez. American film critic Elvis Mitchell's kaleidoscopic documentary creates a definitive narrative of the Black revolution in 1970s cinema, from genre films to social realism, from the making of new superstars to the craft of rising auteurs. With Is That Black Enough for You?!? (the title referencing a recurring line from Ossie Davis's 1970 benchmark Cotton Comes to Harlem), Mitchell takes a personal and panoramic approach, expressing his own experiences as a viewer while detailing the cinematic and political histories that led to this extraordinary flowering of a newly ascendant Black heroism. The Learning Tree, Watermelon Man, Shaft, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, Cool Breeze, Sounder, Super Fly, Coffy, The Spook Who Sat by the Door, Claudine, Uptown Saturday Night, Cornbread, Earl and Me, Killer of Sheep, and dozens more are analyzed with Mitchell's customary verve and perspicacity. This is a work of painstaking scholarship that's also thoroughly entertaining, an essential archival document and testament to a period of American film history unlikely to be repeated. Featuring interviews with Margaret Avery, Harry Belafonte, Charles Burnett, Laurence Fishburne, Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Suzanne de Passe, Glynn Turman, Billy Dee Williams, Zendaya, and more. A Netflix release. Or maybe you've been to a big sports event and the t-shirt cannon got shot right at you! It felt cool even if it was just for a moment. Today we want to teach you how to tap into this dopamine effect in your next promotional campaign.  Welcome back to another episode of the Rainmaker Family Show! Our guest today is known as “the giveaway master” and he knows everything we need to know about how to add value and grow our social followings fast. Hit play to meet the one and only, Josh Coffy!  He is the founder of Flight Media and is the host of his own podcast called, The E-commerce Alley. This guy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to e-commerce brands, specifically D2C brands getting off Amazon.  If you've been following us for a while, you know that we love Amazon FBA and getting your product on Amazon for passive income.  A lot of times Moms come into our world in an effort to just start up a side hustle of finding a way to make a few extra $100 a month. Then, they catch the bug, they get the entrepreneurial itch and they just have to keep going. They start making money online and they think, “dang, I want to scale this brand! I want to take it to the moon and potentially even scale it!” When brands hit that step, one of the most valuable things you can do in the Amazon space is to start finding ways to start taking your customers off your Amazon and into an email list or following a social media account. This is one way you can start diversifying your brand and get ready for massive amounts of growth! That moment is where Josh definitely comes in. During this conversation, Josh breaks down exactly what we all need to start using an awesome “giveaway” strategy to up-level our brand and sell more products! The best part about Josh's wisdom is these tips work for every level of entrepreneur. When Chelsey and I first got into the business, our brand fell into a small niche and we didn't have a totally massive follower base. By using give away strategies we were able to quickly scale our followers and even got us featured on an account with over 1 Million followers of our ideal customers.  We hope you enjoy this episode and take action on some of these ideas!
