This week we leap back to English speaking films, from Paris to the old west, with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. Amelie was full of beautiful cinematography and this week we view and discuss The Coen Brothers 2018 American Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. We hope you enjoy.
"I'm not a devious man by nature." For Episode 351, Thomas and Brandon do double genre duty with the Anthology and Western genres by discussing THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS. Our exit this week has Tripp taking over the steering wheel and taking us to France. It's our traditional season finale "Tripp's Pick," and this year it is Patrice Leconte's The Girl on the Bridge. In addition to having to endure Ross butchering the French language, we also get conversations about Anora, black-and-white, fairy tales, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and all the different versions we could have had of this movie. This week, SepTIMEber continues as we head back to 14th century France to launch real fireballs out of real trebuchets alongside real Montreal LARPers in a rare misstep from a true master of the popcorn flick. It's 2003's Timeline, directed by Richard Donner, based on the book by Michael Crichton, and starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Neal McDonough, Ethan Embry, Matt Craven, Michael Sheen, Lambert Wilson, Marton Csokas and Rossif Sutherland. Two movies into this theme month and we already be down bad with Stockholm Syndrome, as the dire straits of The Time Machine made this film look like an oasis in the desert comparatively. Alas, it is a deeply flawed flick to be sure, and for the very first time one of our hosts could not make it over the finish line. Plus: a bit of listener mail makes Hayley finally explain her longstanding beef with Ted Lasso. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, good luck! Despite being a Paramount movie, Timeline is not available on Paramount+ but is rentable on YouTube and the Cineplex app at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Rebel Ridge, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Kinds of Kindness, Poor Things, The Favourite, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Emperor's New Groove, Child's Play, M3GAN, English Teacher, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Almost Live!, Ready Player One, Backspot, I Like Movies, Sabrina Carpenter's album Short & Sweet, The Dana Carvey Show, Too Funny To Fail, 300, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Midnight in Paris, Pushing Daisies, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Geostorm, Superman II, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, Maverick, Radio Flyer, The 13th Warrior, Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow, Paycheck and The Perfect Score. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-TPB, as SepTIMEber rolls on with a movie J Mo torrented off the internet roughly 15 years ago and never got around to actually watching: 1979's Time After Time, starring Malcolm McDowell and David Warner as H.G. Wells and Jack The Ripper respectively. Sounds like fun, right? Here's hoping! It is also not available on streaming, but once again is rentable on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, P.T.August continues with P.T.A.'s most recent output, and for the second time this year we're joined once again by the people's champion Matt Pollock to talk about a movie he has been smitten with since its COVID-era theatrical release: it's 2021's Licorice Pizza, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Benny Safdie, Skyler Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Harriet Sansom Harris, and the entire Haim family. A collection of mostly true stories from 1970s L.A. embued with the golden glow of Anderson's own That One Summer childhood nostalgia, its led by two extremely winning performances from a pair of actors both making their big screen debuts. While not without its controversies, it's a dreamlike hazy hangout movie we all loved quite a lot. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, Licorice Pizza is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and across the globe on the Criterion Channel at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Targets, Scanners, Kim's Video, Michael Clayton, Saturday Night, The Ladies Man, Coneheads, It's Pat, Rebel Ridge, Hold The Dark, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Clueless, Dazed and Confused, Wild Wild West, An Evening With Kevin Smith, A Star Is Born, Maestro, Warrior, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, The Curse, Good Time, Coffee and Cigarettes, Down By Law, Rumble Fish, The Outsiders, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Mystery Men, Domino, Seven Psychopaths, Special When Lit, Pinball: The Man Who Saved The Game, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood..., among countless others. We'll be back next week with more P.T.August as Travis Woloshyn joins the two-timer club, returning to talk another fumblingly comic detective noir as we watch Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston in 2014's Inherent Vice! Which is shockingly not currently streaming, at least not in Canada, so... good luck. Try the library! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

By now, we're used to the Coen Brothers' penchant for goofy comedy, from the musical massacre in Buster Scruggs to the suggestive Navy dance number in Hail Caesar. But Blood Simple, their debut film, had been a grim, Sundance-friendly noir - so in 1987, no one suspected their sophomore effort would turn out to be a slapstick classic! Join MG as we take on Raising Arizona!
Drive Away Dolls marks the 20th feature film released by either one or both of the Coen Brothers, so we rated them all. From Blood Simple to the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, from Joel's the Tragedy of Macbeth to Ethan's Drive Away Dolls, from the maligned the Ladykillers to the lauded No Country for Old Men, Brad and Jake cover it all. Hosted by Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler

How can we use dramatisation to create tone? In this episode, Chas and Stu continue their deep dive into how to write tone by examining films with “light” (we use the phrase loosely) tones: LADY BIRD, EMILY THE CRIMINAL, THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS, and SPONTANEOUS. We also talk a surprising amount about DUNE and CRAZY STUPID LOVE. We focus on the relationship between character & tone and how the writers of these films use dramatisation to create their unique tones. We talk minimalism vs maximalism, dialogue, character actions & reactions, emotional dynamic range, and rules of the world vs given circumstances. Stu proposes a new triangle to help us understand the dials we as writers have to affect tone: the given circumstances of the story, how that effects character actions & reactions, and how the audience are told about those elements. Brad and Jake dive into the cinematic highlights of 2018. They kick off with "mid90s," Jonah Hill's directorial debut that vividly brings to life the raw skateboarding scene of 1990s Los Angeles through the eyes of a troubled boy. The journey continues with "Hereditary," Ari Aster's haunting horror film that masterfully intertwines family drama with spine-tingling terror. Brad and Jake dissect these distinct films, wondering what will become of Hill's directing career, and whether Aster's film might be better watched through a more realistic lens than a supernatural one. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Murder by Death (1976), Dogtooth (2009), Inherent Vice (2014), Tangerine (2015), Manchester by the Sea (2016), First Reformed (2017), The Florida Project (2017), Annihilation (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), Ben is Back (2018), Blindspotting (2018), Burning (2018), Can You Ever Forgive Me? They delve into dreams, nightmares, and even reference the Coen brothers' film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. In the midst of a seemingly nonsensical age with real-time Holocaust denial and teens wearing MAGA hats and Che Guevara T-shirts at the same time, they earnestly try to make sense of it all. The duo passionately rails against oversimplification and the inclination to neatly box and label the messy world we share. As they become accustomed to the fraying social fabric, the conversation weaves through generational shifts and historical events, from the early '90s, Kurt Cobain and Reality Bites to the 2008 economic crisis and beyond.Recorded on November 1 (Day 26).Thanks for tuning in!

[School of Movies 2023] The final main feed instalment of our Coen Brothers series goes out with a double-bang of exceptionally gripping Westerns. No Country for Old Men (2007, written by the recently departed Cormac McCarthy) is a tense game of cat and mouse. Josh Brolin discovers a drug deal gone very wrong and walks off with the money, and Javier Bardem plays the dead-eyed Terminator slowly but surely closing in on him. This whole case is followed by Sheriff Tommy Lee Jones who is scratching at his head to fathom the trail of violence he is witnessing. And in True Grit (2010) the second adaptation of the 1968 Charles Portis novel, a brand new Hailee Steinfeld, aged 13 commands a grizzled old frump of a bounty hunter played by Jeff Bridges to help her track down her father's killer and see justice done. It somehow manages to surpass the classic John Wayne version in every way. And both of these were influences on my own writing. If you want to hear what we have to say on the remaining Coen Brothers films you can catch our Patreon-excusive After School Club shows on The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, Burn after Reading, A Serious Man, Hail Caesar, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Actor Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were recently charged with involuntary manslaughter stemming from a fatal on-set incident that took place on October 21st of 2021 while the movie Rust was filming in New Mexico. An extensive investigation by New Mexico officials established some facts regarding the tragedy: which are that Baldwin was rehearsing a scene inside a church set with a prop gun given to him by assistant director David Halls. During the rehearsal, the gun discharged and a real bullet struck cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The bullet passed through her chest and also struck the film's director, Joel Souza, wounding him in the shoulder with a non-fatal injury. Hutchins was pronounced dead later that day. In this episode, Jessica lays out the legal ramifications of the charges and where the trials may lead. And in order to learn a bit about on-set firearms protocols, we invited an expert in this field to talk about how firearms are handled on movie and television productions. Joey Dillon is an armorer, gun trainer, gunfight choreographer, and assistant prop master who has handled prop weapons on movies like the Coen Brothers' The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Hail Caesar!, as well as The Call of the Wild, The Harder They Fall and television programs like HBO's Westworld.
Matthew Turner and Amelie Thomas from Fatal Attractions podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Matthew's choice True Grit. True Grit is the 2010 Coen Brothers Western adapted from the the 1968 novel of the same name. It stars Jeff Bridges as Deputy U.S. Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and co stars Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. The previous film adaptation starred John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old farm girl, collects her father's body after he was shot while on a trip to buy horses by Tom (Brolin) Chaney. She hires a reluctant Rooster Cogburn to track Chaney down. He agrees to take her with him but departs without her. Furious Mattie pursues him riding alone and catches up with Rooster to find him riding with Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon). Rooster is left with no choice but to carry on with Mattie in tow. It earned a whopping ten Oscar nominations and failed to win a single one. Despite this, mainly due to Roger Deakins cinematography, True Grit remains a favourite among fans of the Coens and Westerns. True Grit had a mixed response for recommendability due to its western genre, you either like them or you don't! Slightly higher scores for the other categories gives an overall rating of 3.75 The Coen Brothers are currently the top featured Flixwatcher directors (along with Tarantino) and True Grit ranks ahead The Ballad of Buster Scruggs but below No Country for Old Men. Jefferson Mays is currently on Broadway in his original interpretation of "A Christmas Carol" doing perhaps what he does best: playing multiple roles in a single show. Jefferson recalls the strange beginning of how it all started, which was when he and his wife ran smack into Matt Schackman, the Artistic Director of Geffen Playhouse, as they were walking their dogs. He was eventually inspired to base their version on Dickens' original, one-man version. Jefferson also has his parents to thank for reading "A Christmas Carol" to him and his siblings when they were young, which sparked his love for performing and storytelling, thinking it was theatre in its purest form. Decades of experience later, he reflects on how this year has been the year of the understudy and swing, and how their talent and heroism changed his whole idea of what a company means. While performing on stage brings him joy, it's those moments off stage that makes him appreciate the magic of theatre even more. Jefferson admits to gravitating towards storytelling, sharing that this allows him to explore characters and their complexity endlessly. And while he doesn't have a list of roles to play before he reaches a certain age, he enjoys getting "mugged or ambushed by a production" for different kinds of roles. He shares what it's like to grow up with older siblings and the privileges that come with it, hearing the voices of his parents when he's performing on stage, and how his sense of curiosity and wonder motivates him to keep performing. Jefferson Mays is an actor and a three-time Tony Award nominee for his performances in "Oslo", "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder", and "I Am My Own Wife" a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Doug Wright, where he played over 40 different roles and won for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. His other stage credits include "The Front Page", "The Best Man", "Pygmalion", and "Journey's End". His TV credits include "The Americans", "Westworld", "Nurse Jackie", "Law and Order: SVU", "The Closer", "Julia", "Perry Mason", "Hacks" and a guest role on "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". He was most currently seen on Broadway's "The Music Man", and recently completed his one-man rendition of "A Christmas Carol" and is now bringing the same show to Broadway. He has also appeared in numerous films, including "Inherent Vice", "Ned Rifle", "Showing Up", "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", "Kinsey" "Rebel in the Rye", and "The Giver" among others.
