What makes films memorable and meaningful? Great cinematographers are not only translators of a director's vision but are involved in a dance between director and actor. When combined with personal techniques like handheld, the camera itself can become a character, bringing us back in time and behind the eyes of well-known figures like Van Gogh and Stephen Hawking, which is what Benoît Delhomme did in the films At Eternity's Gate and The Theory of Everything.Benoît Delhomme studied cinematography at the École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière and went on to make his breakthrough as a director of photography for the movie The Scent of Green Papaya directed by Tran Anh Hung. The film went on to win the Caméra d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. Benoît has established himself as an international cinematographer and has worked with creatives such as Al Pacino, Julian Schnabel, and James Marsh. Over the years, Benoît Delhomme has worked on a wide array of films where his focus has been to tell a strong story through the visual. This focus has shined not only through his work as a cinematographer, but also his work as a painter."I certainly like a handheld camera, It's a bit like playing a saxophone. It's like the pace of walking or how I stop or I decide to go closer to the actor or to take more distance is so free. No one is telling me to go one step forward or one step back. I have to decide on the spot. So there certainly a freedom like a painter with a brush. It's nice because you have even the vibrations, your rhythms, the actor's rhythms. It's this dance."www.benoitdelhomme.comwww.benoitdelhommestudio.comwww.instagram.com/benoitdelhommewww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

As a cinematographer, if you can't make what you do personal to you, there is no soul. You need to make it personal.I don't know if Julian Schnabel trusted me, and I had to prove myself. For example, he had another guy in mind. And for many weeks, he said to me, 'Maybe we should keep two cinematographers?' And one evening he said, 'I'm going to paint in my outdoor studio tonight if you want to come.' And, I went to see him painting and brought a small digital camera. And he had music on and was doing this incredible painting. I was kind of fascinated to be there. We didn't talk. He knew I was filming him. He didn't say anything. So I spent part of the night cutting my small documentary. And in the morning at breakfast, I put my computer on the breakfast table and showed it to him, and he was so focused and very moved by what he saw. And he said, 'Okay, you captured what I was doing. The Art Angle

In a new feature film called Inside, an art heist goes terribly wrong for a thief named Nemo. Nemo is played by the world-renowned actor Willem DaFoe, well-loved by the art world already for his performance in the 2018 film At Eternity's Gate, where he played Vincent van Gogh. In the ultra-contemporary plot of Inside, Dafoe's character Nemo is not a world famous artist, but rather an anonymous robber who's after a self-portrait by Egon Schiele. The artwork is not where it is supposed to be inside the ultra-modern penthouse he's just broken into. Carefully laid plans seem to be going awry. Precious minutes are lost. Then, the alarm system locks down, leaving Nemo sealed off from the world while in the center of Manhattan. If you haven't seen Insideyet, be advised that there are spoilers scattered throughout this episode. So, Nemo is now stuck in a resplendent box of glass, steel, and concrete, with little more than some exotic fish, luxury furniture, and a multimillion dollar art collection. On-screen alone for practically the entire film, Dafoe's character begins to battle against the degradation of his body and spirit—to deal with the latter, the artworks in the apartment become something like a central character, as does Nemo's own blossoming creativity. The artworks in the apartment, which were carefully curated, drive the plot and deepen the themes. There is a 1999 work by Maurizio Cattelan, a large photograph of a man taped to the wall with tons of duct tape, sarcastically titled A Perfect Day. There is also David Horvitz's 2019 neon that hangs over the character's struggle, with a sort of torturous prescience: it says “All the time that will come after this moment.” To build out the idea of a real art collection, there are more emerging stars. Kosovan artists Petrit Halilaj and Shkurte Halilaj's work for the 2017 Venice Biennale is worn by Nemo when the penthouse's temperature drops. And a video work by Julian Charrière and Julius von Bismarck from 2016, which was filmed at the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, is among the artworks in the film that conjure questions around humanity, planetary survival, and climate crisis—which is an undercurrent theme of the movie. On this week's episode, European editor Kate Brown speaks to the film's director Vasilis Katsoupis and art curator Leonardo Bigazzi about this captivating and claustrophobic feature, which had its world premiere at the Berlinale film festival last month and is about to hit theaters in the United States.

We are back at the movies to discuss the 29th MCU movie Thor Love and Thunder starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale. Join us for our spoiler filled chat all about it. Synopsis for our Thor Love And Thunder Movie Review Directed by: Taika Waititi Story by: Taika Waititi Written by: Taika Waititi with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson In a barren desert Gorr and his daughter struggle to stay alive, but despite their prayers to their god, Rapu, his daughter dies. In Rapu's lush realm, Gorr's plight and grief, and his many years of devotion are dismissed by Rapu, who proceeds to strangle him. But the god-killing Necrosword, who called Gorr to Rapu's realm, offers itself to Gorr, who kills Rapu with it and vows to kill all gods, but all wielders of the Necrosword are cursed with impending death, from the sword's corrupt influence. As Gorr rampages across the galaxy exacting his revenge on Gods, his next target is New Asgard that brings him into the crosshairs of Thor the God of Thunder. Thor arrives in New Asgard just as Gorr attacks using the power of the sword to manipulate shadows and produce monsters. In the heat of battle Thor is surprised to find Dr Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir, after Mjolnir had reforged and bonded itself to a dying Jane Foster due to an enchantment Thor had unknowingly placed on it many years earlier to protect Dr Foster. He teams up with her, Valkyrie, and Korg and fights Gorr from New Asgard, but as he escapes, Gorr kidnaps several Asgardian children and imprisons them in the Shadow Realm. Thor learns where the children are being held after being contacted by Axl, Heimdall's son, and decides to form an army of Gods to rescue them. They travel to Omnipotence City, but Zeus, fearing Gorr, refuses to help and they must escape the City on their own to pursue Gorr. Arriving at the Shadow Realm, the children are missing and Jane Foster deduces that the kidnappings were a trap, as Gorr needs Stormbreaker, in order to enter the realm of Eternity, who can grant his wish to destroy all gods. Ambushed, Gorr overpowers the group, severely injuring Valkyrie and managing to take Thor's axe. At Eternity's altar Thor and Jane Foster must fight to save the children of Asgard and for the survival of Gods. They destroy the Necrosword, freeing Gorr from its influence, and the three are brought into Eternity's realm. But Jane is at death's door weakened from using Mjolnir and with Gorr poised to make his wish, the outcome is uncertain. Thor implores Gorr to revive his daughter instead of destroying the gods, and moved by Thor's tenderness with Jane, he wishes for Eternity to revive his child, which it grants. In the aftermath, Jane Foster's sacrifice is honored in New Asgard, where Valkyrie and Sif begin training the children. Thor adopts Love, Gorr's resurrected daughter, who joins him wielding Mjolnir in his heroics. In a mid-credits scene back in Omnipotence City, a recuperating Zeus sends his son Hercules to kill Thor. In a post-credits scene, Foster arrives at the gates of Valhalla where she is welcomed by Heimdall and thanked for helping his son. Oscar fail month wraps with one burning question - is it easier to portray a modern famous person or one that has been dead for 130 years?  Malek won for his Freddy Mercury , but mostly for his concert scenes. The film was more of a medley (meh-dley). Meanwhile,  in "At Eternity's Gate", Dafoe submerged himself into one of the world's greatest artists on the edge of insanity.Next, scam movies with David Mamet's "House of Games" (1987) and "Boiler Room" (2000).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Oscar fails month continues  with the 2009 Best Director category. Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" is probably the best choice of those nominated. The direction was best when the characters were young  in the slums of Bombay, but it  bogged down in the second half. Christopher Nolan's  "The Dark Knight" is a modern day film noir masterpiece that wasn't  nominated for Best Picture. Matt, comic book movie hater, loved every second of it. Nolan's story telling and visual eye is everything we love  on this show.  Next 2019, Rami Malek wins for "Bohemian Rhapsody" but was Willem Dafoe in "At Eternity's Gate" better? Tune in.Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Have your own recommendations? Contact the show: 24theroadshow@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/24theRoadShow

Original Air Date: Monday 21 June, 9 pm EasternDescription:Dean and Phil follow up on last week's awesome show by discussing more about “Hollywood accounting” and how in show biz the “bottom line” is often NOT the bottom line! Last week, while discussing the box office struggles of the brand new In the Heights, Dean and Phil were inspired to look back at two dance films based on the same craze that opened on the same day many years ago, one of which boasted a music score from Phil's frequent collaborator, Greg De Belles. Greg composed the score for Phil's Karl Rove, I Love You and for Dean and Phil's The Truth Is Out There and The Lady Killers. Greg died on Friday, and Dean and Phil speak of their immensely talented friend. Of course, the box office struggles continue, so Dean and Phil discuss how a Pixar movie might have been able to change everything. That leads into a deep dive into Disney +, the movie Soul, the miniseries “WandaVision” and the episodic series “The Mandalorian”. There is also a lot of talk about painting, from the advice given by the great Leigh McCloskey to the thematic approach of the Barbizon school of artists and the brilliance of Julian Schnabel's Van Gogh film At Eternity's Gate. Finally, Dean and Phil celebrate the careers of an Oscar-nominated character actor and a beloved sitcom actor and director.
