Today's guest is the one and only Noomi Rapace. She's an actress and a producer. A shatterer of limiting beliefs. She achieved international fame originating the role of Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of the Millennium Series: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.” This woman digs into the mind, body, and soul of every character she plays. Just watch her portray septuplets in “What Happened to Monday.” It's masterful. And from the beginning of her career in Sweden, she's taken a unique approach to auditioning that might unravel some of your ideas about this industry. Noomi's worked with everyone from Guy Ritchie's in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” to Ridley Scott in “Prometheus,” to Tom Hardy in “Child 44,” to John Krasinski in “Jack Ryan.” She opens up about producing and starring in her latest film, “The Secrets We Keep,” and shares how much she enjoys peeling back the layers of truth in her own life and in the stories she tells. Her career is an example of the depths you can go when you master your fears, and the connections that unfold when you create the work you want to create. My guest this week is engineer Alan Meyerson, who many believe is the top scoring mixer in film today. With more than 200 credits, Alan has worked with leading film score composers like James Newton Howard, John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Danny Elfman, and has a particularly long-standing working relationship with the great Hans Zimmer that continues to this day. Alan's credits as a scoring mixer include blockbuster movies like Man of Steel, Iron Man, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Inception, The Dark Knight, Kung-Fu Panda 1 & 2, Despicable Me 1 & 2, The Last Samurai, Gladiator, and Hannibal. In addition to this, he also has a number of music mixing credits that include Bryan Ferry, New Order, Etta James, and OMD. During our interview, Alan told me about being a part of the first wave of dance music, making the transition to film work, his approach to orchestral recording, why he isn't into vintage microphones, how he tailors his reverbs, dealing with 750 tracks of orchestra, his adventures at Abbey Road, and much more. I spoke with Alan from his studio in Los Angeles.  On the intro I looked at the possible TikTok ban in the United States, and the Caesar's Palace console finds a new home with UA.

We're going on a bit of a detective spree today, and what better way to kick things off than with a little chat about pipes? We all know how Sherlock loved his, and honestly, who can resist the allure of a finely crafted smoking instrument?First up, there's the iconic Briar Pipe. You've likely seen this one in the hands of wise old gentlemen – it's got that vintage charm, doesn't it? Then there's the artistic Meerschaum. It's not just a pipe but a piece of art. Oh, and how can we forget the rustic Corncob, famously loved by none other than Mark Twain? If you're channelling your inner Sherlock, then the Calabash is your go-to with its unique gourd shape. And for those long, thoughtful evening puffs, the Churchwarden, with its elongated stem, is just sublime.....Speaking of sublime, our Movie of the Week is none other than "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows". It's a futuristic twist with our detective being resurrected, flying drones, a techy London, and – wait for it – a robotic Watson! We have a truly one-of-a-kind dead pilot for you this month! It's The Sleeping Father, written by Michele Mulroney & Kieran Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, Power Rangers), based on the novel by Matthew Sharpe. It follows the slow-motion implosion and long and ridiculous recovery of the Schwartz family after patriarch, Bernie, goes into a coma and comes out of it even more screwed up than when he went in. Michele and Kieran originally wrote this as a screenplay for Warner Bros and it was later revived as a television pilot for Warner Bros Television. The Mulroneys have lived with and worked on this adaptation for well over a decade, and we are happy to bring you not just one, but two episodes of this criminally dead project! They wrote a great second episode that we will be bringing you next week. This is an unconventional and unpredictable story about a messy family that we know you're going to love. For the final character actor episode of 2021, Stephen and Andrew look at the career of Swedish actress Noomi Rapace. Best known as Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, Rapace has made a career of playing determined yet vulnerable female characters. Though her first English language role was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, it was Ridley Scott's Prometheus that would define her Hollywood career. From there Rapace spent most of the 2010s making lean, mean thrillers like The Drop, Child 44, What Happened to Monday, Close and The Trip. Her next film Lamb releases later this year. Today’s guest is the one and only Noomi Rapace. She’s an actress and a producer. A shatterer of limiting beliefs. She achieved international fame originating the role of Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of the Millennium Series: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” This woman digs into the mind, body, and soul of every character she plays. Just watch her portray septuplets in “What Happened to Monday.” It’s masterful. And from the beginning of her career in Sweden, she’s taken a unique approach to auditioning that might unravel some of your ideas about this industry. Noomi’s worked with everyone from Guy Ritchie's in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” to Ridley Scott in “Prometheus,” to Tom Hardy in “Child 44,” to John Krasinski in “Jack Ryan.” She opens up about producing and starring in her latest film, “The Secrets We Keep,” and shares how much she enjoys peeling back the layers of truth in her own life and in the stories she tells. Her career is an example of the depths you can go when you master your fears, and the connections that unfold when you create the work you want to create. It's the start of the Benjamin Button-style Fincher-Fest, movie lovers! And what better way to kick it off than to take a look at David Fincher's current film, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," based on Stieg Larsson's first book in his internationally best-selling "Millenium" trilogy. It's already racking up end-of-the-year accolades and incredible buzz about Rooney Mara's knock-your-socks-off performance of Lisbeth Salander (all well-earned), even though some contingents of fans of the original Swedish films (great films in their own right that only came out last year) question why Hollywood felt it so necessary to adapt the books again so quickly after the others were made. The Swedish films certainly put Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist -- who play Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively -- on the map in international casting circles (Rapace has since appeared in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and just wrapped in Ridley Scott's Prometheus while Nyqvist appeared in John Singleton's Abduction earlier this year and currently can be seen in Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol.) In this episode, we talk about the various iterations of this first of Larsson's stories -- did the Americans need to make their own version, what works in each version and what doesn't, what did Fincher and his team bring to the table, etc. We work to put in context what the Swedish film is to Swedish audiences by comparing similar statistics with American films. We discuss the performances -- Rooney Mara's brilliant work as well as the amazing Daniel Craig who we both feel isn't just playing James Bond in Sweden. We discuss the change in the end of the story and how we feel about it as well as all of the sequences that come after the climax. We chat about the team behind this -- Steven Zaillian who is having a great year with this and Moneyball, Jeff Cronenweth, Ren Klyce, Kirk Baxter, Angus Wall, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross -- and that's just some of the crew! Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Julian Sands and the always amazing Christopher Plummer all give brilliant performances. One actor we don't mention in this episode but who is worth mentioning here is Yorick van Wageningen, the poor actor stuck with playing the brutal role of Nils Bjurman. He was so traumatized after filming his pivotal rape scene with Mara that he locked himself in his hotel room for a day and cried. Obviously his choice to take the role, but it's always good to be reminded that an actor is not the character they portray. So if you haven't had a chance to read the book or watch either film version, go do so before listening in because we have some spoilers, then tune in and join us as we take on this fascinating murder mystery with one of film's most intriguing characters in years.

First up, the newest Mission: Impossible film and a sequel to Sherlock Holmes. Joining the duo to discuss these features are past guests Scott Mendelson and Jordan Grout. The group takes the time needed to get into reviewing these tentpole releases along with delving into The Dark Knight Rises prologue, which was exclusively attached to select IMAX screens showing Mission: Impossible. Other regular segments of the show are included as well; “know everybody”, “retro review”, and an extended look at the box office, given the skills Scott Mendelson possesses as a pundit. It is certainly a content-filled show, with plenty of fun to be had.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law reprise their big-screen turns as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in this second Guy Ritchie-helmed outing, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” Once again, this classic, brainy crime-fighting pair are dropped into a noisy world of fistfights, explosions, and slo-mo bullet-time shots. There’s no intellectual pretense in this winter blockbuster, but this sequel at least delivers a smarter story and a better bad guy: Dr. Moriarty, played by Jarred Harris.

Screenwriter Kieran Mulroney knows the best way to  handle a fight with his writing partner Michele Mulroney (who is also his wife): Michele wins. All kidding aside, when your wife’s your writing partner, how do you deal with a tie break? Michele gives the answer: "We always say the person with the most conviction wins." "That's Michele," says Kieran. They laugh and comment on the immensely fun, but extremely emotional, experience of being a husband and wife writing team assigned to the new action comedy Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (the sequel to the successful 2009 Sherlock Holmes, starring Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr.).  The film releases December 16. Script sat down with this witty husband and wife writing team to get some clues on how they wrote one of the most anticipated sequels of the year. Podcast highlights: "There's a burden of expectations ..." "It was a really honest group of filmmakers ..." (Robert Downey Jr., Guy Ritchie) "They gave us full permission to say, 'No,' if we didn't see a way to make their notes work ..." "Your first draft, no matter how long you spend on it, is never as good as you think it is ..." "In a classic Sherlock Holmes story, you have to start at the end and work to the beginning ..."
