Described as a "deep dive into aerodynamics until you absolutely can understand it, and more importantly can teach it. A program that creates a real understanding, beyond the rote answers required for the FAA Knowledge Test." SCFC goal is to also show you tips for how flight instruction should unfold in the aircraft to make your students reach their full pilot competency. What first fundamentals are critical to a student's first few flights? How you can take even basic maneuvers and use them to make your students better at landing? Why the sequencing and grouping of flight education is important. It's a whole week of things you should have learned but likely weren't taught in your quick CFI program. Director of Operations at SCFC, Dan Dyer has dedicated much of the last two decades to aviation, first in helicopters and then in airplanes. He has been an instructor for more than 15 years, and is known for his effective safety seminars. Dan originated SCFC's founding principle and motto: safety, community, and adventure. His enthusiasm for learning has helped to make SCFC the fastest growing flight school in the Bay Area.

Years ago, when GPS navigation systems first entered the cockpit, pilots were forced to interpret GPS signals through older VOR devices. Now with color and moving map displays using GPS navigation is easier than ever. But for new pilots some of the terms may be confusing. San Carlos Flight Center invites chief pilot Dan Dyer for an introduction to basic GPS terms in use. Learn the difference between TRK, DTK, and XTK. This is your chance to ask a flight instructor all the questions about GPS that you’ve wanted to ask. If you recently added a GPS unit to your aircraft or you are a new pilot starting out on cross-country navigation using GPS this is the presentation for you. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn how GPS can be a useful aid to many pilots, when used safely.
Flying through in the many airspaces of California requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills. And yet, radio communication is rarely taught as a specific subject during private pilot training. Usually, new pilots just absorb what they hear on the frequency around them, both good and bad. Although some radio techniques are covered in ground school, rarely do student pilots get the time devoted to demystifying this often-confusing subject. San Carlos Flight Center invites Herb Patten, Assistant Chief Pilot, AGI and CFI and Dan Dyer, Chief Pilot and CFI to show how to perfect your communication and phraseology. They will cover radio phraseology from the basics through advanced ATC services with emphasis on flight following and flight service stations. This seminar will include many examples on how to recognize bad radio calls, and how to fix them. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. If you are interested in becoming better at your radio, you don’t want to miss this seminar.
Do you remember in your training when you feared the crosswind landing? Perhaps at some level you still do. Did you find yourself preferring to land at Haward instead of San Carlos? Do you feel there are normal landings and crosswind landings?Dan Dyer and San Carlos Flight Center, the only flight school on the west coast with a crosswind simulator, is committed to training pilots competence in all landings. In this seminar, Dan Dyer, said by some to be the west coast crosswind expert, will take you step by step through all phases of landings with and without crosswinds, so that you approach every landing the same way. With a bit of practice you will land as easy as stopping your car at a stoplight. It’s part of the flight, no big deal, in fact it will become the best and most fun part of the flight. Imagine approaching a landing as just a landing even to the point you do not have to think too much about the crosswinds. In fact you now even enjoy the challenge of a crosswind. Don’t miss out on this seminar to be a better pilot.
Flying through SF Bay Area airspace requires a high degree of situational awareness and sophisticated radio skills. This presentation is meant to bridge the gap, to help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls and how to improve their own radio skills, with plenty of chance to practice their skills. Dan Dyer a CFI will walk participants through a foundation of radio communication phraseology and use, from the basics through advanced ATC services. Learn how to make radio communication easier and safer for all pilots. Don’t miss out on this seminar if you are struggling with your radio communications, or want to improve your radio.
Planning for a long cross-country flight involves a lot of thinking ahead. There’s weather analysis, route selection, and planning for alternatives. There’s also the need to estimate flight time and fuel burn to meet FAA regulations for minimum onboard fuel. Seems easy right? The only way to determine the amount of fuel you’ll need, is if you’ve already solved a host of other calculations. To be accurate, you’ll need to know ground distance, forecast winds, and aircraft performance information. You’ll also need to make some choices about altitude and route. Most pilots complete these series of calculations using grid sheets to guide their calculations, with cryptic columns label such as TH, DEV, CH, and ETE. At San Carlos Flight Center, we use a Cross-Country Flight Log sheet that makes it easy to understand the sources of information and the flow of calculations. In this Ground School Refresher seminar, Flight Instructors Herb Patten and Dan Dyer will walk students through the variety of calculations need for each leg of flight that lead up to the final Fuel Needed number. If you are a new flight student confused about cross-country flight calculations or just need a refresher, please tune in.
Santa Maria, the gateway to Southern California, and the beautiful Santa Ynez valley is a great destination airport for many reasons. From the beautiful wineries, to the blissful beaches and tasty BBQ joints; this is a pilot’s dream. Santa Maria is a short flight from the Bay Area and a perfect destination for either students trying to log their long cross country time, or pilots seeking a great weekend getaway. Where else can you request to taxi directly to your hotel? Or walk from the airport to the beach? Dan Dyer, Chief Pilot at San Carlos Flight Center will reveal the plethora of opportunities, adventures, and points of interests in and around Santa Maria. Dan will review suggested routes of flight, highlight local operations at KSMX, and provide tips on how to efficiently and safely operate at this airport. If you are interested in joining the FOG trip to Santa Maria on March 27th or you are just interested in a new destination, plan on attending this seminar.
Pilots think differently than physicists. Physicists approach flying the way they do other studies of mechanical motion, with an understanding of mass, speed, force, work, and energy. Values and relationships accumulated over the years describe the interaction of bodies in motion, in a way that allows scientists and engineers to make predictions about their behavior. Yay, science! Pilots inside cockpits moving through space are more often concerned with the task of flying, what action of the controls causes the aircraft to climb, descend, turn, or remain straight and level. Our perspective is often focused on our little picture, on the stuff we touch inside the cabin. But much can be gained from taking the big picture look at flying, and especially approach to landing, from the perspective of an energy scientist. This is the Energy Management approach to landing. In this presentation, SCFC Chief Pilot, Dan Dyer brings us a big picture overview of how energy is created, consumed, used, and transferred in aviation. How can an understanding of chemical, kinetic, and potential energy inform our skills as pilots? Which flight control most easily transfers energy back and forth between potential and kinetic? Where does the energy go? A good pilot is always learning. Join us if you want to improve your landings by coming at it from an entirely different angle.

Most pilots learn to fly at Class D or Class G airports. At Class G airports, radios aren’t required. And while Class D airports may be busy, it’s unlikely they have air carrier operations typically found at Class C and Class B airports. Class D air traffic control towers only provide basic services to protect and coordinate use of the runway and the surrounding airspace. Compared to Class D or G airports, Class B and Class C airports are busier, and have more structured rules for approaching, entering the airspace, and landing. Even departures from Class B and Class C airports pose interesting new challenges for pilots who have only ever operated at Class D airports. This seminar is the fourth in a series of SCFC’s Radio Communication Safety Seminars and focuses on Class B and C airport operations. This seminar will help newer pilots understand the structure of radio calls at these airports and how to improve their own radio skills. Herb Patten, Assistant Chief Pilot, AGI and CFI and Dan Dyer, Chief Pilot and CFI will walk participants through a foundation of the ATC services offered at these airports and the radio communication phraseology to use. Learn how to make operate more cleanly and safely at these busy airports.
