In this powerful episode of The Jason Ingber Podcast, renowned attorney Carl Douglas joins Jason for an unfiltered conversation about two defining moments in L.A. history: the Altadena fire and the O.J. Simpson trial. Carl shares personal reflections on the devastating Altadena fire and how it impacted the community. He also opens up about his front-row seat in what's been called “the trial of the century”—representing O.J. Simpson as part of the legendary defense team. Together, they explore themes of race, media, justice, and the unseen toll these stories take on the people involved. If you're interested in law, Los Angeles history, or untold stories from high-profile cases, this is a conversation you don't want to miss.

Town Sued For Not Having Elections,Remembering OJ Simpson,Discussing Sex with Dr. Rachael Ross A small Alabama town is being sued after white officials refused for three years to allow its first Black mayor to exercise his mayoral duties. We'll be joined by one of the attorneys from the Legal Defense Fund who filed a preliminary injunction to force Newbern, a town of about 133 people, to hold elections and allow its citizens to vote for the first time in years. The OJ Simpson murder trial will always be a trial people will talk about. Tonight, Carl Douglas, who was on the defense team led by Johnnie Cochran, will tell us what it was like defending the pro football hall of famer. And Dr. Rachael Ross will be in the studio to discuss sexual health. #BlackStarNetwork partners:Fanbase
We react in real time to the death of O.J. Simpson with both his attorney, Carl Douglas, and, for some reason, Stan Van Gundy. They help us dissect the complicated analysis of O.J., the person vs. the case, his family left behind, and the racial dynamics at hand. Then, Stugotz delivers another Top 5 of Names That Connote Prayer, we deliver our boring Jokic Stat of the Day, and Stan Van Gundy makes a bold claim about Luka Doncic. Plus, it's time to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done, and JuJu creates a new show on our YouTube channel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Show Notes Episode 438: What If Everyone WAS Kung Fu Fighting? This week Host Dave Bledsoe loudly proclaims he knows “Drunk Fu” as the bouncers haul him toward the exit. (Drunk Fu is mostly just screaming and crying while struggling weakly against stronger men). On the show this week talk about that time in the 1970's when everyone was doing karate kicks on the disco floor and hurting each other: we are talking the Kung Fu Craze of the 1970's Along the way we learn exactly what kind of nerd Dave was as a kid. (The kind who eschewed physical exercise for reading books.) Then we dive right into the short, short version of martial arts, martial arts movies and how martial arts movies became a thing Americans watched, and eventually danced to. (The Seventies were fucking weird man!) We head to Asia for a quick tour of Asian cinema and learn (very) little about the good Asian films in favor of the ones with dudes in rubber lizard suits and dudes punching the shit out of each other. (You want a movie podcast, listen to Karina Longworth!) We meet Bruce Lee and sadly, say goodbye to him almost instantly. Then we discuss the actual topic of the show: how a Jamaican man and an Indian man both living in Britain made a song about Kung Fu. (Is it a LITTLE racist? Yeah, sadly.) We discuss how the song swept America and the things it made white Americans do on the disco floor that injured one another. (Not just by cutting themselves with their coke chopping razors.) Our Sponsor this week is Paddy's School of Boston Martial Arts who want to know, what the fuck are YOU looking at? We open with Ed Gruberman and close with Fernan doing an acoustic version that is somehow LESS racist than the original song. Exciting times - how to find the boat that's right for you. Top items to check from budget to accessories. PLUS bonus - how to test a boat on the water. Timestamps 01:15 Buying brand new - start with your rowing plans? What will you use it for? - Recreation - High performance shell - Racing or not racing - Your water - flat or rough open water? 03:00 Boat size for your weight. You should choose a range of weights to reflect your needs. A 15kg range is normal - from below and above your mid-point. The test is can you get the oars out at the finish while rowing square blades? Different boat builders have multiple hull shapes - mid weight and heavyweight hull shapes. 05:00 Your physical proportions Have you got a long or short back? 06:00 Price budget for your new boat. Things that cost more and add to the overall price - boat materials - - rigger choices (aluminium or carbon fibre) or reverse wing - shipping from overseas manufacturers 08:00 Accessories add cost. Here is a list of things which you can add Shoes; electronics, carry slings, oars (blade design), a boat cover. 11:00 if you know the hull you want ask the manufacturer for different priced materials which use the same hull mould and cost less. You can make custom seat tops (Carl Douglas); adjustable height seats, buy your riggers direct from the rigger maker. Durham Boat make carbon sweep riggers and Carl Douglas makes side-mounted (Euro) riggers. 14:00 Storage and transportation Where will you keep your boat - is there a rack at your club? Or at home? Is there a waiting list for club racks? Consider a roof rack for your car. Can you lift it on top of your car? Tim Crooks and Burnham Boat make car carry racks. For outside storage consider getting a boat cover or boat bag to keep the UV rays off the hull. Make your own roof rack using a ladder - the span of your car roof alone is insufficient to support a 7 meter long single scull. Can you slide your boat up onto the car roof rack when loading it unassisted? How heavy is the boat with its riggers - can you lift it above head? 19:00 Ordering your new rowing boat. Contact the boat builder and ask about lead times. How long do you have to wait? Their estimated time needs a cushion - align with your seasons. Order in October for a March delivery. Extra lead time may be worthwhile. Do they require payment - what are the payment terms - deposit, up front, payment plans may be possible. The earlier you tell the boat builder of your intention to buy - will put you onto their build schedule. It's exciting putting in your boat order. 22:00 How to test a boat to find what's right for you. Measure your current boat first - know what you are used to. The length of oars and inboard, the span, spread, the footstretcher position in front of the pin, the seat to heel cup, the oarlock sills height above the water surface (measure when sitting in the boat). Ask to try out someone else's boat. Adjust the trial boat to match your normal rig. Footstetchers are particularly important when testing a boat. Make the height washers reasonable for you. This affects your perception of the performance of the boat you are trying. 24:15 Comfort is the first consideration. Every boat rides a little differently. How does it feel? Listen to the sound of the boat as you row it. Test rows what to cover (have a speed measure with you). Do a normal warm up. How do the balance, height, blade grip at the catch, seat and slide feel like? Do some pieces in the boat 500m or 2 minutes at 24 (firm pressure) and 2 minutes at rate 30. Row in the same direction if it's windy so your speeds are comparable. Do some racing starts. Record your speed measurements so you can analyse the results afterwards. Testing a recreational or coastal boat - you may not get as high stroke rates. Try different types of water - choppy water, open water, get into the waves, get some flat water too. Can you manage the boat alone? Does it beach launch well? Where to store life jacket, a dry bag and your water bottle? 29: 00 Try as many brands as you can. Camps who supply boats can give you opportunity. The manufacturer's representative can introduce you to local owners who may loan you their boat to test out. 31:30 Customer service. Ask other owners how good the service is. Ask about popular spare parts - does the dealer carry these locally? Who do they recommend for repairs? Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. Faster Masters uses StreamYard: https://streamyard.com/pal/d/5694205242376192

Montrose was considered to be America's answer to Led Zeppelin in the early 70's. Founder Ronnie Montrose had played with a number of musicians including Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and with Edgar Winter on the hit singles “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” He formed the band bearing his name with bassist/keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald, drummer Denny Carmassi, and front man Sammy Hagar. Paper Money is the group's second album, and was the band's highest-charting release, reaching number 65 on the Billboard 200 chart. This follow-up to their self-titled debut album took on a broader style, with a stronger range of rhythm and dynamics while downplaying the heavy metal feel of the first album. Ronnie Montrose thought that the heavier music was a passing thing. However Montrose was just ahead of its time, and heavy metal was about to explode. Ronnie Montrose had a strict no-drug use policy for concerts, as he wanted all the members to be in top shape on their instruments and vocals for the show. The sessions for Paper Money were often marred by the deteriorating relationship between Montrose and Hagar. Soon after this album release, Sammy Hagar would leave the band for a solo career and eventual duties as the front man for Van Halen. Fitzgerald would go on to play for Night Ranger, and as an offstage keyboard player for Van Halen in the 90's. Carmassi would play for a number of artists including Heart, Whitesnake, Al Stewart, Kim Carnes, and Joe Walsh, as well as his own solo work, placing him on more recorded albums than Sammy Hagar.Wayne features this rocking album for today's podcast. StarlinerWe start this podcast with an instrumental with a space theme — prior to Star Wars. This song is the final track for side 1 of the album. Spaceage SacrificeAnother space themed song, this one was written by Hagar and Montrose. Although considered “sci-fi rock,” the song itself is a bit critical of the effort and money spent to go to the moon when troubles remained unsolved on Earth. "Don't think twice spaceage sacrifice. Well, let's go back when it all was starting. A man on the moon and people were starving."Paper Money This track is a critique of the monetary system in a time of inflation. “Take away all my silver, take away my gold, and hand me a stack of paper, paper money don't hold.” This one is the first single from the album, and the concluding track.I've Got the FireWayne saves his favorite track for last. It is a hard-driving song with explosive energy. This one may benefit from the concealed tension between Montrose's edgy tone and Hagar's vocal virtuosity. It would be the last one the band recorded before Hagar left the band to pursue a solo career. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Puttin' On the Ritz by (from the motion picture “Young Frankenstein”)Mel Brooks' black and white comedy classic featured Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced FRAHNK-en-steen) and the monster in Broadway-styled number. STAFF PICKS:You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by Bachman Turner OverdriveRob get's the staff picks rolling with a Canadian band's number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was intended as a joke for Randy Bachman's brother Gary, who had a stutter. It was used as a “work track” to set up the mics and amps in the studio, but it wound up being a hit after it was included on their “Not Fragile” album.Killer Queen by QueenBruce's staff pick is the first U.S. hit from Queen. This week we have a special episode and a special guest. Back in the ‘70s the way we consumed music was different and sometimes limiting. Today you can just stream those songs you think are fire, and whatever your music taste is, you can do it till your satisfied. Back in the day however, you probably couldn't afford to buy all the individual records or albums containing your favorite songs. If you wanted to get dancing and rock your baby, you may have had to buy one of those knockoff albums and that was just a shame, shame, shame. Hopefully none of your guests wanted to rock the boat, or worse yet engage in some sort of kung fu fighting about the whole thing. If there was a fight, hopefully everyone could pick up the pieces and channel that energy to dance the kung fu instead. This week we review the 1975 budget knockoff album Disko Hits from Pickwick Records featuring The Disko Band. We will compare and contrast the hit versions of the songs with their Disko Band cover versions. There are some hits, but a fair amount of misses as well. We are virtually traveling back to Thanksgiving 1974 for this one. Not sure if we should be thankful for this album. Disko Hits! Now listen to the performance of the Disko Band on this album.” Do It (Til You're Satisfied): “The B.T. Express weren't satisfied until they were number one. Listen to the hit.” Rock the Boat: “The Hues (sic) Corporation rocked the charts with this hit performed here by the Disko Band” Shame, Shame, Shame: “This song, made a hit by Shirley and Company, is performed here by The Disko Band.” Kung Fu Fighting: Carl Douglas started a new craze with his big hit. The Disko Band will show you why.” Get Dancing: “Disco Tex and the Sex-0-lettes got dancing and recorded this hit. Not to be outdone, The Disko Band recorded it for this album.” Rock Your Baby: “George McCrae's smash hit of the summer of '74 now played by The Disko Band.”
